Our Story - It’s a story about Family!

We are Dynamic Family Martial Arts Centers. We are owned by Dynamic Martial Arts, llc.
Our address is 12930 West State Road 84, Davie, FL 33325. We are located on the corner of
State Road 84 and SW 130 St.in Davie, FL. Our phone nymber is 954-370-0001. Our fax
number is 954-746-4388. Our website is www.morethankicks.com. Our email address is
[email protected]. We are operated by Rick, Tammi and Rob Hartman.
Our story is really is a story about family. Our family has continuously operated Martial Arts
Schools in South Florida since 1994. Our story begins in Liverpool, NY when Rob Hartman
(currently our head Instructor) at age 27 started taking Karate lessons. Over the next 7 years
he not only achieved Black Belt but began his career in the Martial Arts.
Rob was part of the management team for one of the largest Martial Arts Organizations in the
United States. In 1990 Rob and his family relocated to South Florida to become the program
director for what became the largest single location martial arts school in the country and to
be closer to his father, who had retired to South Florida 5 years earlier. Here he became nationally recognized, breaking all previous records for student enrollments in one year.
He then joined a newly formed martial arts billing company and traveled the country helping
school owners develop and improve their schools.
In 1994 Rob, decided it was time to open our first school in Plantation, Fl where his brother
Rick joined him after achieving his Black Belt at age 42.
Three years later the brothers moved the school to Sunrise where it was located for fourteen
years. During that time they purchased schools in both Coral Springs and Boca Raton as well
as a Daycare. They also developed the Disney Martial Arts Festival which became one of the
largest Martial Arts Festivals in the USA. They currently promote the 27th State Martial Arts
Festival a multi discipline Event, held each September at the University Center at Nova
Southeastern University.
In December 2010 the Sunrise school was relocated to it’s present location 12930 State Road
84 in Davie under the name of Dynamic Family Martial Arts as a multi faceted facility for
Martial Arts and Fitness training for the entire Family. This new 2400 sq. ft. facility offered
the newest innovations in family fitness as well as the martial arts training the Hartman family
has become known for.
At the Davie location is Rob, now a 4th degree Black Belt, Rick, also a fourth degree Black
Belt and Tammi, his wife, is a 3rd degree Reiki Master and certified nutritional councilor.
We offer American Kenpo Karate, After School and Camp programs. In 2016 we were
joined by Carl Ranieri and staff under the name of ROCK MMA who offers MMA, Brazilian
Jujitsu, Kickboxing, Muy Tai, as well as Boot Camp style fitness training.
As you and your family get to know us, our story may help you understand why we believe
we are your best choice for Martial Arts and Fitness training in the South Florida area. We
want you to experience, as we have, what the martial arts has been to our family and we encourage you to make it part of your family's lifestyle as well.
So on with the rest of the story in which YOU and YOUR family is a very big part of!
Welcome to the Family!

Our first priority is to encourage each of our members set and achieve their individual physical, mental and spiritual goals. Our entire program is designed so that all of our members can continually
achieve their personal best in a safe, fun and positive environment.
Why Training in Martial Arts is Important?
Those who may NOT be familiar with the true meaning of being a Martial Artist might believe it’s
about fighting. While in reality its just the opposite. Martial Arts is a tremendous tool for training
and enabling yourself and/or your children how to stop a fight before it begins. By teaching our
students self-discipline, self-control and self-confidence, as well as self defense we are arming them
with the best weapons against violence rather than teaching them to be violent. We teach Martial
Arts’ life skills and how to enjoy a healthy lifestyle. This includes self respect and respect for others.
Our students train in the real life, self-defense system known as American Kenpo Karate - Eagle
Method. Through the last 24 years we have developed our training program to include “principle
based” life skills. These positive character building lessons have been integrated into our training,
especially in the children’s programs. These skills empower our Members to excel in all areas of
their lives. We quote Gen. Colin Powell, former US Secretary of State and Chairman of the Joint
Chiefs of Staff , as he said it best in rergauards to developing well rounded children, “We must challenge young people by having high expectations of them; engage them with the opportunity to realize
those expectations through constructive, character building activities.” Our center provide one of the
best opportunities and environment to meet this challenge.

It’s Not Just What We Teach!
\It’s Not Just What We Teach but, How We Teach!
American Kenpo Karate was developed by our founder Edmund K. Parker, Sr. Our Instructors have
developed as method of teaching this most effective yet complex system of self defense. We refer tour
our method as the Eagle Method. Simply explained it is a breakdown of the kenpo system into manageable parts and put into a method of teaching it an achievable modules. We also offer the knowledge
our members need to develop good health and positive lifestyle habits.
Consistency: Why it’s important!
Attendance is the key to any members’ success. We expect our members to attend a minimum of two
classes per week between Monday and Friday. Friday and Saturday classes are less formal. Please let
the coach/instructor know of any obstacles in attending regularly, so that we may assist you. Feelings
are good servants, but they make lousy masters. Everyone experiences motivational challenges once in
a while. One of the most
common reasons that people train in the Martial Arts is to improve their self-discipline. We define selfdiscipline as doing what we know we should, even when we don’t want to. By learning to follow
through on our commitment to our training, we learn to follow through on everything else. A student’s
attendence in training should be like that of his or her regular school. We all have a responsibility to
complete what we start.
Emblems and What They Mean!
We teach American Kenpo Karate as one of our main Martial Arts discipline. The symbols on our
patch continue to remind us of our traditions while we continue to evolve and grow as a community.
The founder of American Kenpo, Mr. Edmund K. Parker, Sr. was an innovator who, though he loved
tradition, never let it stand in the way of progress or common sense. We kept his tiger which represents
basic skills and inherant physical strengths. We have, however, replaced his Chinese Dragon with the
American Bald Eagle. To us this majestic and mighty American icon represents the higher concepts of
spiritual strengths, much like Mr. Parker’s dragon but more in tune with our culture. The Crane represents the unlimited power of the internal arts. We practice the Art of Reiki
in our school. It is an ancient Japanese healing art that balances shockra’s, emotions and other health
needs. mental strengths. This third dimension completes the balance needed in our Martial Arts. All
are put in the triangle representing both strength and balance between the three dimensions.
American Kenpo Karate : What is it and Where Did It Come From?
American Kenpo Karate is primarily based on the teachings of Senior Grandmaster, 10th degree
Black Belt Edmund K. Parker Sr .under the guidance of 7th degree black belt Mr. Ken Herman of
Pompano Beach, Florida. American Kenpo Karate is based on the Chinese Kenpo that Mr. Parker
learned from Professor William K. Chow, though it has influences from many other disciplines and
concepts that Mr. Parker studied and developed. Commonly accepted as the “Father of American
Karate.” Ed Parker, Sr. was one of the most brilliant martial artist of all time. His understanding of
body mechanics and systematic completeness is the foundation of this art which has had such a lasting
influence on Martial Arts around the world. Mr Parker’s modernization of “traditional” karate and his
innovative concepts has brought American Kenpo into the forefront of Martial Arts in America. His son
Ed Parker, Jr quoted his father in this way “he often said that Chinese Kenpo is the how to fight,
and if you add the ability to think, the result is American Kenpo.”
Our organization has taken this first “American born martial art” to a new level through a method of
teaching that we created known as the Eagle Method. Over the past 15 years our Senior Instructors
have taken this most effective martial art and developed an outstanding method of teaching it that is not
only comprehensive, but is a superior way of teaching martial arts in general. With the entire system
What we Teach!
5
from the first class to black belt and beyond is broken into monthly cycles and then into weekly lessons and
taught in each class. It is also one of the few martial arts whose founder and closest students documented
everything they developed. We have taken this great system to the next level. Whether the student begins as a
child or adult the curriculum is organized into syllabus that is appropriate for their age and developmental stage.
All curricula are broken down by age, belt group and experience level. The skill level groups are Youth and
Adults. Each group has different requirements for each belt.
We have also developed a complete series of life skill principles where our students learn the mental self-defense
that is needed in today’s world. Our students learn the life-skills that help them with mental self-defense
techniques along with their physical self- defense. This systematic approach helps them improve their selfconfidence and self-esteem. They also learn how to resolve conflict through non-violent means. Each month
we build a message into every lesson that helps our students (especially the younger ones) to learn or reinforce
their success on and off the mat.
Teaching Real Self Confidence - Separating Black Belt Ranks
Ninth Degree Black Belt, Dr. M. Gyi, a friend and peer of Mr. Parker, is the retired head of the Burmese Bando
System of Martial Arts in the United States. He said “Ed Parker’s American Kenpo Karate is the most effective
and complete self-defense system in the world.” But the truth is not even American Kenpo Karate, or any other
martial art, can change the laws of nature. Anyone who tries to promote giving children, and their parents, the
false security that any Martial Arts training will equip the child to oppose a full grown, large, dangerous adult in a
physical confrontation is doing everyone an injustice. Therefore, we separate our ranking system into two
groups. Our children’s rank system has ten belts to a Youth Black Belt and on average it takes three to 4 years to
achieve this rank. There are also six additional Youth Black Belt ranks to Adult Black Belt. These ranks are indicated by white strips on their Black Belts. Our Adults have ten belts from White to Black. After achieving Black
Belt adult students have the opportunity to seek additional degrees, thereafter. There are an additional nine
degrees of adult black belt. Adult degrees are indicated by red stripes or bars on their black belts.
Student Affirmations and Why We Say Them
We use affirmations as mental reinforcement method proven to help people maintain a positive focus on that
which they chose to accomplish. Student Affirmation are recited at the beginning of each class and the Black
Belt Principles are recited at the end. These affirmations instill the foundations for positive mental attitudes and
provide points of reference for raising or correcting behavior. Copies of the Student Creed and Black Belt
Principals are available upon request.
Intent to Promote – The Parent’s Secret Tool!
All students receive an Intent to Promote Form. This is the first step in eligibility for promotion for either stripe
or belt. We use it as a written tool for you the parent to communicate your thoughts to us. This does let our
younger students know we all care and are interested in their behavior inside and outside of the Center. For the
student to test, the intent to promote/permission slip must also reflect the student’s growth in life skills. It
includes a place for the parent’s assessment and the student’s assessment of themselves. These forms are handed
out to the students three weeks before testing. The Intent to Promote must be returned by the date indicated or the
student risks missing a promotion for that month.
Stripe Test & Belt Promotions
The Instructors determine the student’s readiness for earning a new stripe or belt. The process runs over a five
week period and is an accumulation of information that tracks the student’s progress and is an accountability
system. The fifth week of the cycle is preparation and testing week. This time-tested success system has been
developed so that each student receives fair consideration for promotion. If for any reason the student is not
eligible for promotion, a form is available for review and what is needed to get the student back on track towards
progress and promotion. Stripes are the black or colored tips on the end of all belts except black belt.
A stripe indicates that they student has successfully learned the basics of that rank’s requirements, has been able
to demonstrate some progress in learning their techniques and forms for that particular rank and is now ready to

What we Teach
advance to the second phase of the requirements for their next rank. It also indicates that with typical progress the student should be able to reach eligibility to test the next cycle for promotion to their next belt rank.
After ecieiving the colored stipr (typically two months after their last Belt promotion if they pass their stripe
test, the students receives a red stripe. They then return on graduation day to receive their new belt ranks.
Stripes are the short range objectives that lead to the mid-range goals, which is achieving the belt. Parents
Note: There are no guarantees of stripes or belts every month. Goal achievement is one way we instill true
confidence and high self-esteem in our students. If it is decided that a student is not ready for a belt or
stripes then he or she will not be asked to participate in the test but will continue with their regular class
training. For children and teens, the parent will be informed if they should attend testing. The Intent to Promote gives you the opportunity to approve testing. If you feel that your child does not deserve his or her
stripe or belt, let us know so we can use this process as a method to encourage improved behavior. Please
always feel free to discuss your child‘s progress with us. We highly recommend family and friends attend
belt-testing and graduation. In the student’s mind this places greater value on their accomplishments and
shows positive reinforcement toward their goals. Occasionally, stripe tests and Graduation Day change.
Please check every month for any changes.
Testing—What’s the point!
In order to accomplish long-range goals you must first accomplish short-term goals. The journey to Black
Belt is a great model of how the goal-achieving process works in many phases of life. Our proven success
system provides the opportunities for reward incentives which are extremely important to growth, especially
for children. It all starts with a dedication to attendance and learning what is required of them. It develops
good behavior and a positive attitude, as well as good learning habits. Testing is a sensitive subject for most
people, especially because of the emotions that are associated with it. In order for our students to reach their
potential, we always do what we believe is best when deciding to award or withhold promotion. We want
them to experience real victories and receive the appropriate reward for their accomplishments. But what if
we are not getting their best? There are so many factors involved. For instance, regarding children, is their
attendance off because of the parent’s schedule? Are they involved in another sport? Are they in a slump?
Some students have difficulty concentrating, some have challenges processing their thoughts, and some are
not applying themselves. While parent/instructor communication always needs be open and frank, the
parent and the instructor must also be reflecting unity, especially when the student is facing challenges. We
want our students to gain confidence so they can achieve their dreams. We want them to be prepared, so
when they run into a challenge they can focus on overcoming it. Big victories are made up of small ones.
The stripe and belt system is the foundation for consistently building the student’s confidence. Sometimes
we have to have confidence in our students before they can have confidence in themselves. That is why we
take several factors into consideration when testing and once in a while we decide it is best to advance
someone based on factors other than performance before or during a test. Especially in the beginner ranks,
we must build self confidence (the habit of victory) before we can motivate them to believe they can
overcome any obstacle. However, this only works for a limited amount of time. We cannot always continue
to advance based on “other circumstances.” Students know if they have learned their material. If they do not
have to earn their rewards and we keep passing them, in time it becomes okay not to do their best. They may
also believe they know how to defend themselves when they do not. We must also be fair to those students
who really study and work hard. We all need to stay clear of comparing one student to another. Sometimes
we need to promote, or not promote, someone based on facts that we cannot share or discuss. We have
developed a fair system and have great success in motivating students of all ages to do their best! Our
promotion system communicates to the student that they must do their best and they must be ready to prove
it. It is important that parents and our professional team work together to for the best results.
What are Testing Cycles - How it works!
Our testing process is based on ten testing cycles during the year. Each cycle is 5 weeks. There are two
weeks on the calendar that are for review and extra help each year. These weeks are usually the week of the
4th of July and the week between Christmas and New Years.
Week One: Starts the Monday after Stripe Test Week. We get right into the curriculum for the month. Students who just qualified for new rank promotions begin breaking down and learning their new techniques and
forms. Students who received their black stripe continue improving and developing what they have already
Why We Test!
7
been taught and whatever they need to progress towards their next rank. Students who successfully earned
their colored stripes start reviewing their material and perfecting their techniques as they start moving forward to their next promotion in the upcoming test.
Week Two: Students learn their week two curriculum and briefly review week one. We work more on
forms now that they have also had the opportunity to practice last week’s techniques at home. Each student
needs to keep their official notebook up to date so they can practice correctly at home. This week we are also
starting to collect the needed information to decide whether or not a student is eligible for their next stripe or
belt. That process begins by sending home the Intent to Promote Form. This form allows the parent to tell
us how the student is doing at home. During the next two weeks the instructors will be evaluating the
information needed to recommend a student for stripe or belt promotion.
Week Three: We start to focus on the students showing us what they’ve learned in week one and two. We
also start to look toward the next promotion test. The “Intent to Promote” form are now being returned by
the students and the instructors are compiling the information on the Rank Evaluation Form. By the time the
Intent to Promote Form is returned to the instructors they have completed all possible sections of the
Evaluation Form. The forms are now forwarded to the Head Instructor for his or her approval.
Week Four: Students continue to perfect their techniques, forms and sparring skills. The Head Instructor is
also observing those who have been recommended for a stripe or belt promotion to assure they are on track
for testing. When all the requirements have been met, the Instructors make their recommendation to the
Senior Instructor. There are three categories considered. Has he or she developed his or her skills to the
best of their abilities? Has he or she attended the required number of classes? Has he or she grown in their
confidence, positive mental attitude and self discipline? Based on those factors a list of eligible students will
be posted.
Week Five: Stripe Test Week, for those eligible for a stripe or a new belt. This is test week and the time to
work extra with those who need help to qualify. Everyone not testing spends the week reviewing and
improving on their material. If they receive a black or colored stripe then the process is complete. If they
receive their red stripe they have qualified for a new belt. Students will receive their new rank at the “Belt
Graduation Ceremony.” (All accounts must be current in order for the student to be eligible to receive their
stripe or belt rank.) For those who cannot attend belt graduation they will receive their new rank in class.
Belts—Why we use them!
Students display their progress, experience, and knowledge by the darker color of their belts. In ancient martial arts training there was no belt rank system. We provide belts that continue to get darker in color until the
achieve the rank of Black Belt, to show a student’s time, effort, knowledge and level of expertise as they progress through the system. This is why, at the end of our Belt Graduation, the students wipe the “sweat from
their forehead” with their belt. This symbolizes that the knowledge they have learned is being transferred
into their new belt. One way we display humility by only wearing our belts in the school. Exceptions are
made for special events. Please ask permission from an instructor before wearing a belt outside of the
school.
Belt Graduation - The Reward!
Belt Ceremonies are a significant event in progression for both the student and the entire Center. Everyone is
invited to attend and share in the event. Belt preparation and testing also gives us an opportunity to teach our
students the art of mental toughness in a safe, positive, and healthy environment. They learn to push
themselves, face small adversity with eagerness, and sometimes experience failure. Thomas Edison said he
“failed his way to success.” We also teach students how to overcome all of the obstacles so they can and do
experience the exhilaration of victory and the benefit of perseverance. This is a great confidence builder.
Without earning something, no one learns the lesson of value. We want to assist our students in this lesson.
Be assured, we experience far greater victories than defeats. It is very important that we work together with

of each class. This is to be used for stretching and preparation for class. Schedules with designated times and
days for each group are available. A student may only attend his or her specific belt and age group class. We
find it is helpful for the children if they know specific days are set aside as “training days.” When you need to
change class days and times we will help you in anyway possible. If there are challenges please let us know. We
will help you find a solution that will meet your needs.
Formal Protocol - why we use it!
We stress the importance of respect in our school. We ask our students to call the instructors Mr., Mrs., Miss,
Sir or Ma'am. We recommend that everyone formally address each other in this manner. Showing respect
towards each other helps to promote the attitude that we are a team focused on a common goal.
Parents Viewing Classes
Family and friends are encouraged to watch classes. We ask that while watching classes please you moderate
your voice to avoid disturbing the class. This shows respect for the instructors and students. If you bring smaller
children, for safety reasons, please keep them close to you at all times. During a belt ceremony, Student Creeds
and Black Belt Principles everyone should remain silent.
Dropping of Children
We encourage parents to watch their children while they are in class. However, we understand it may not be
practical for parents to stay for every class. If you must drop off your child, please be sure it is no more than
fifteen minutes prior to class. Children must be picked up immediately after class. We cannot be responsible
for unattended children. We understand how busy you are and we will do our best, but please understand we
can not teach classes and watch unattended children at the same time. Your Child’s safety is our primary
concern and we appreciate your cooperation in this serious matter.
Vacations
The goals of our program include learning basic techniques and skills. Students also learn basic calisthenics and
isothermal exercise. Students also sharpen mental skills such as focus, concentration and listening. When
students miss more than one class, please inform the school. If they are going to be away for an extended period
of time, please give us your address so
we can send them information to help them stay up to date. We want them to feel that they are still part of the
Center. In regards to “freezing” programs, the person responsible for any monthly payments due will be
expected to continue the payment schedule. However, we will be happy to extend the training time or provide
additional classes at no additional charge for the time of absence.
Monthly/Weekly Payments
We want you to be aware that any introductory offer you will be expected to enroll in a Martial Arts or Fitness
membership for a specific time period. We will be expecting you to complete the program you select according
to the terms listed on the Student Tuition Finance Agreement. The cost of the entire program is due and payable
before classes begin unless a payment tuition agreement has been pre-arranged. We use a preferred method of
automatic debit or credit. If you have a billing question, please do not hesitate to contact us at the center at 954370-0001. Remember there is no challenge we cannot overcome if we all work together.
