Scarlett
Johansson led the charge at
the Spike TV 2011 Guys
Choice Award in LA on June
4 but keenly avoided any
mention of her rumoured ex Sean Penn.
Hollywood is abuzz with speculation
about why the 26-year-old split from
Penn, 50 , after just two months, but the
stunning redhead stuck to industry chatter on the red carpet.
Her erstwhile boyfriend even avoided
the press pack - and Scarlett - at arrivals,

Single brigade invades
Guys Choice Awards
Studios in Culver City alongside Justin
Timberlake, Mila Kunis, Jennifer Aniston
and Cameron Diaz.
Scarlett was keen to impart an insight
from the set of The Avengers, a canny
move considering the moribund status of
her movie career versus her fervid love life
of late.
She said, “I just flew in from New
Mexico, where I’ve been shooting The
Avengers. A bunch of the cast is here
tonight but I’m here to support the troops.
Chris Evans and I are presenting.”
“We’re right in the middle of scenes and
figuring a lot of stuff out. I’ve been training a lot and doing all sorts of exercises.”
Her new fitness regime is just another
thing she now has in common with one of
the beauties at the
event,
another
newly minted singleton Cameron
Diaz, 38.
The blonde is
reported to have
split from
her base-
ball pro lover Alex ‘A-Rod’ Rodriguez, 35 ,
but betrayed no sign of sadness at the
high-spirited event, despite opting for a
funereal black suit.
With such an array of beauties, including Rosie Huntington-Whiteley, 24 , who
was flying the flag for the UK in an arresting white gown, it was quite a scramble for
the Holy Grail of Hotness Award.
The honour went to Black Swan
temptress Mila Kunis, 28 , who accepted
the award from her Friends with Benefits
co-star Justin Timberlake, 30.
Jennifer Aniston, 42 ,
meanwhile, was honoured with the Decade
of Hotness Award and
earned a whoop from
friend Jim Carrey, who
scooped the Funniest
MF gong, which was
presented by Diaz.
The army of
beauties was
bolstered by
Eva Mendes
in a delightful lavender
dress and Minka Kelly in blue, to add to
the rainbow spectrum of attire.
Timberlake, again a member of the
newly single brigade after splitting from
Jessica Biel, had taken care not to let his
female counterparts upstage him in the
style stakes.
Justin looked sharp in a John Varvatos
leather jacket, Dolce and Gabbana shirt,
Nice collective khakis, All Saints boots set
off with a Cartier watch.
The cheeky star also had fun with the
show’s choice of award, a pair of stag’s
antlers.
Timberlake has been linked to a string
of beauties including Olivia Wilde and
most recently Ashley Olsen, since splitting with Biel.
So it’s clear he’s not afraid of mining his reputation as a ladies man for
a laugh.
And Mark Wahlberg, who
turned 40 yesteday, started his
celebrations by picking up
the award for Best Guy
Movie of the Year for
The Fighter.
Rolling Stone Keith
Richards bagged the most humourous
trophy of the evening - the Brass Balls
Award, and the 67-year-old rocker
appeared to appreciate more than his
many gold discs.

Fossil extends life span of a marine predator
Science
guide
THE largest animal species of the Cambrian period, a marine predator with a segmented body and a pair of grasping appendages, lived much
longer than previously thought and grew to sizes much larger than previously known. The animals, known as anomalocaridids, were thought
to have gone extinct after the Cambrian period, 540 million to 500 million years ago. Now a newly discovered specimen indicates they lived
30 million years longer, into the Early Ordovician period. The new specimen measures more than three feet in length; the biggest specimen
previously known was about two feet long. Derek Briggs, a paleontologist at Yale, and Peter Van Roy, a paleontologist at Ghent University in
Belgium, discovered it in southeastern Morocco and described their findings in the journal Nature. The pair also found more than 1,500 fossils of other soft-bodied marine animals, including sponges, horseshoe crabs and tube-dwelling worms, at the site. Generally, soft-bodied animals do not preserve well, making intact fossils a rare find. The find in Morocco was unique because the fossils were trapped in sediment
clouds that preserved the bodies extremely well, Dr Briggs said. When anomalocaridids were first described, in the late 1800s, their scaly
appendages, found in isolation, were thought to be the legs of a shrimp species. The animal’s disclike head was also found in isolation, and
some believed it might be a jellyfish.

Poor sleep to blame for aggressive kids
Parenting
guide
POOR sleep may be a factor in aggressive behaviour among kids, according to new research that found that children who bully other kids are more
likely to be sleepy during the day. In the study, researchers found that children with conduct problems at school were twice as likely to have sleepdisordered breathing problems or daytime sleepiness as other children who reported adequate amounts of sleep. In examining elementary school students who had conduct problems, the researchers concluded that sleep-disordered breathing — problems that occur during sleep, including snoring
and obstructive sleep apnea, where the airway collapses — could be the cause of their daytime sleepiness. Other reasons for kids’ fatigue, they
noted, could include a disorganised home environment or too much stimulation from technology, such as televisions, cellphones or computers in the
bedroom. The study, suggested that although more research is needed on the link between sleepiness and conduct problems, efforts to reduce children’s daytime sleepiness could help eliminate a significant amount of bullying among kids. “But the good news is that some of these behaviours
can be improved,” she said. “Sleep-disordered breathing can be treated, and schools or parents can encourage kids to get more sleep.” To improve
children’s sleep quality, the researchers said, parents should:
Remove TVs, phones and computers from kids’ bedrooms. Encourage children to get an adequate amount of uninterrupted sleep each night. That’s
11 to 13 hours a night for preschoolers and 10 to 11 hours nightly for school-aged kids. Make getting enough sleep a household priority.
Babies who are good sleepers
have nature and nurture on their side
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
I
F your child is a bad sleeper – one who
can’t fall asleep on her own, wakes up
frequently at night, or insists on sleeping in your bed – is it because you are a
bad parent? Or are her genes to blame?
For the most part, the fault probably lies with
you and the choices you make about your
child’s sleeping environment, according to a
study published online on Monday in the
Journal Pediatrics.
Italian researchers studied 127 pairs of
identical twins and 187 pairs of fraternal
twins to reach this conclusion. They interviewed parents about whether the twins – all
18 months old – slept with them or in their
own room, whether the twins slept through
the night most of the time, and whether they
took daytime naps, among other things. All
sets of twins were assumed to share the same
environment that’s the “nurture” part of the
nature-versus-nurture debate. The fraternal
twins shared about half of their DNA, on average, while the identical twins shared virtually
all of it that’s the “nature” part.
Here’s what they found:
Both identical and fraternal twins slept an
average of 9.7 hours per night and napped for
an additional 2.1 hours during the day.
53 percent of identical and fraternal twins
slept in the same room as their parents.
“Environmental influences” like choices
made by parents were almost entirely responsible for whether the toddler twins were
sleeping in their own room or with their par-

ents. Genetics had nothing to do with it.
Genes did play a role in whether the twins
consistently woke up during the night.
Though 31 percent of identical twins were
reported to wake up at least seven times per
week, only 19 percent of fraternal twins did
so.
In addition, nearly 31 percent of the variation in the length of time twins slept at night
was explained by genetics, along with 36 percent of the variation in length of nap time.
Those figures are in the same ballpark as two
previous pieces of twin-sleep research: A
Japanese study that found genes accounted
for 32 percent of the variation in time it takes
to fall asleep, and a Canadian study that concluded genes were responsible for 44 percent
of the variation in incidence of “sleep terrors.”
The good news is that if your child is not a
good sleeper, odds are you can improve the
situation by changing his or her environment.
Indian street kids work at dawn, then dream of school
AFP
F
OURTEEN-year-old
Deepchand should be learning but instead he lies
sprawled fast asleep on the
floor of an Indian school — exhausted by his early morning labour's
finding rubbish to sell.
Abandoned by his mother, his
father dead, he works as a trash collector on the streets of New Delhi,
starting two hours before dawn collecting plastic bottles, drink cans
and metal — anything that will earn
him a little cash.
Deepchand, who like many street
kids has only one name, uses the
plastic bag in which he collects
garbage as his sleeping bag when he
beds down on the pavement at
night.
But there is hope for Deepchand,
and countless others like him,
through the Aviva Street to School
Centre, a programme run by Save
the Children that targets street kids
to try to prepare them for entry into
mainstream schools.
“It’s hard to teach them at times —
they’re so exhausted,” said Save the
Children programme worker
Pradeep Kumar, gazing down at the
sleeping Deepchand, whose hands
are calloused from work.
Getting India’s millions of street
children into schools is just one of
the big challenges facing the government as it seeks to implement its
landmark Right to Education Act
which is just over a year old.
That’s where transition institutions like Aviva come in — helping
children learn the most basic social
skills such as sharing, and allowing
them to catch up on lost school years
so that they can one day attend fulltime classes.
But many impoverished parents,
who rely on income from the children to support the family, see no
point in education.
“My father says, ‘Do rag picking’
but I want to go to school,” says
nine-year-old Suleiman in the
brightly decorated classroom that
lies up a flight of narrow stairs in a
bustling market.
“The parents are so fixated on getting enough money to survive, the
value of an education falls,” says
teacher Nivedita Chopra.
“But if they see their child doing
well and feel it could eventually
translate into a better life for them, it
can change their minds,” Chopra
says, as she busily puts stars on
drawings thrust at her by pupils.
A few of the children at the school,
which is part of a global network
funded by the Aviva insurance
group, have had a bit of formal
schooling, others none.
“Some of them we have to teach
the very basics — like how to hold a
pencil,” says another teacher,
Rekha, who goes by one name.
Deepchand — by now awake —
says he wishes for only one thing: to
obtain training that would give him
a skill and get him off the streets.
“These children are like any other
children, they want to go to school,
wear a school uniform, but most of
the time they don’t get the chance,”
says Kumar.
India’s education act means all
states must now provide free schooling for every child between the age
of six and 14 but its implementation
is badly bogged down.

them the entire day,” Amitabh posted on his blog bigb.bigadda.com. The 68-year-old, who celebrated the special occasion Friday was also delighted with the rain.

Bollywood looks askance at

HILE Salman Khan has questioned the need for a fast,
Shah Rukh Khan has openly
branded the planned agitation “politically motivated”.
“That (fight against corruption) is a good
thing, but one does not need to fast for it. He
should talk to his followers first and tell them
not to give bribes, that is one way to stop corruption,” said Salman Khan.
National award winning actress and activist
Shabana Azmi, who had earlier spoken in
support of the movement, has clarified her
stance, saying that she will not be joining the
yoga guru.
“In a democracy everybody has a right to
take a stand on any issue. Anybody who
brings the issue of corruption into the public
W
domain, needs to be encouraged and
applauded. But I had categorically mentioned that I do not want to support Baba
Ramdev. I am very pained at being misreported,” said Azmi.
When asked whether he will support
Ramdev in his strike against corruption and
repatriation of black money stashed in foreign
banks, Shah Rukh Khan had answered with a
firm ‘No’.
“I will not support him, he’s got an agenda.
As soon as one becomes a leader he resorts to
such kind of agitation,” said the actor.
This reaction is in stark contrast to the
vociferous support that Bollywood had given
to Gandhian Anna Hazare’s anti-graft campaign.
Actor Anupam Kher, directors Farah Khan
and Madhur Bhandarkar were among the
many celebrities who visited Hazare at Jantar
Mantar, the venue of his fast.

80s’ popular actor
Raj Kiran languishes
in US mental asylum
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
HE actor Raj
Kiran, who can
immediately be
recalled as the one
who played Rishi Kapoor’s
‘pre-incarnation’
in
Subhash Ghai’s Karz was at
the peak of his career in
1970s and 80s, went missing for almost a decade and
then later was assumed
dead.
While most had accepted
the worst, acquaintance
Rishi Kapoor didn’t give up.
He decided to locate the
missing actor. And on his
recent trip to the United
States, Kapoor did what he
resolved to do. He found
Raj Kiran, alive in a mental
institution in Atlanta.
During his trip, Rishi
Kapoor met the missing
actor’s brother Govind
Mehtani.
Says Rishi, “I’ve been
wondering where Raj had
disappeared. The question
had haunted me for a very
long time. Then these
rumours of Raj being no
more began doing the
rounds. I was really disturbed. How can a colleague with whom I shared
some really good times just
vanish from the face of
earth? I decided to look up
Raj’s elder brother Govind
Mehtani to find out about
Raj.”
It was then that the
shocking truth about Raj
Kiran spilled out. Says Rishi
emotionally, “I was so
relieved when Govind told
T
me Raj was alive. But he
was confined to an institution in Atlanta due to health
problems.”
What’s perturbing is that
his family too has more or
less left Raj. He pays for his
own treatment in Atlanta.
Says Rishi, “Raj looks after
his own treatment by working within the institution.
It’s a heart-rending situation for an actor who was so
successful at one time.”
Raj was very well read
and clever with his repartees. I used to enjoy our
sparring sessions when we
worked together. Though
he’s younger to me, we
always got along really well.
I miss him.”
It appears that his wife
with their son abandoned
him at some unknown
point, the shock of which he
couldn’t bear. The rest of
his family too didn’t bother,
seemingly because his
mood swings were intolerable and then it was far too
expensive for them to get
him treated.
He was admitted in a
mental institution in India
before he left for the US
where he lives now.
His family, including his
elder brother Govind and
younger Ajit, are not in
touch with him. When
Rishi asked Govind for
Raj’s phone number, the
brother didn’t have it! Says
Rishi, “I wanted to speak to
Raj and visit him in Atlanta.
But I couldn’t get his contact number. I’m definitely
going to visit him and urge
him to return home.

Zayed: Dia Mirza
TRIBUNE NEWS NETWORK
HE swept floors and brought things
from her home on the sets of her
maiden production venture. Actressturned-producer Dia Mirza got so involved
in the production of Love, Breakups,
Zindagi that her partner Zayed Khan had
to actually scold her to calm her down.
“For me, producing a film was not just
about bringing in funds, making schedules
and dealing with numbers, it was about
realising the imagery that we all had in our
mind. There is a certain level of involvement that I feel a producer needs to have
to give the film that push it needs,” Dia
said.
Dia and Zayed, along with Sahil Sangha,
have launched the production house
Bornfree and are currently in the process of
finishing their first film under the banner.
It is being directed by Sangha and stars
S
Dia and Zayed.
“Zayed scolded me once on the sets. I
was behaving as if guests have come to my
house. So I was taking care of all the smallest things myself. Zayed was like you are
an actor also, so you just need to calm
down and relax and take a seat when your
shot is over,” said the 29-year-old.
“It was a healthy fight and I’m glad that
we had it. He was scolding me because he
was looking out for me and that’s what you
expect from your partner, to care for you,
to account for you,” she added.
Love, Breakups, Zindagi is a romantic
comedy and is slated to release in August.
The film also stars Cyrus Sahukar, Tisca
Chopra, Satyadeep Misra, Pallavi, Vaibhav
Talwar and newcomer Auritra Ghosh and
Umang in lead roles.
Although Dia is enjoying her newfound
role of a producer, she finds it extremely
exhausting.
“I’ve been asked what am I doing to lose
weight, I said, I turned producer. With
Sahil, Zayed and me, our day after pack up
didn’t end. It’s been long hours, but it is
just such an overwhelming experience to
see what you thought to do,” she said.
“I didn’t have any clue that it will be so
enormous of a task. I think you have an
inclination, but you don’t realise how
much you have to put into it to make it
happen everyday. I think you really need
to love it passionately to give it your all,”
she added.
Now that she has tried production, Dia,
who has acted in films like Rehna Hai Tere
Dil Mein, Tehzeeb and Hum Tum Aur
Ghost, is keen on donning the director’s
hat.
“Direction is something I have always
consciously thought about even when I
was acting. I think it was my level of interest in the technicalities of making a film
and how it all comes together. Soon I will
direct a film,” she revealed.

Shania Twain rejoices in Hollywood star
COUNTRY music star Shania Twain has spoken of her joy as
she received her star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, calling the honour a “miracle”. The You’re Still the One star
received the 2442nd plaque on the famous Hollywood
Boulevard footpath in Los Angeles. Twain was surprised by
her Walk of Fame induction, telling the crowd, “I mean, why
is a girl from Timmons, Ontario standing here, getting a star
on the Hollywood Walk of Fame? I really don’t know. Where
I come from and where I am today it’s a small miracle, to
be honest, that I am here today.
SOCCER ace David Beckham, who sports 30 tattoos on his
body, says he is doubtful if he would let his to-be-born daughter get inked. However, the 36-year-old doesn’t mind letting
his boys - Brooklyn, 12, Romeo, 8, and six-year-old Cruz - get
tattoos when they are old enough, reports femalefirst.co.uk.
“I’m not sure I would let her get tattoos, but the boys I couldn’t really argue with,” said Beckham. Beckham’s wife Victoria
is due in six weeks.

‘assets’

OFIA Vergara receives plenty of attention for her
sexy accent and curvaceous figure, but the Modern
Family star says she wasn’t initially appreciative
when her now famous assets arrived at the young
age of 13.
“I was very skinny and I was very volumptuous,” she
said - adding her trademark Colombian flair to the word
“voluptuous” — in an interview with the cast of Modern
Family that will air on Inside The Actors Studio on
Tuesday. “Now, they’re fantastic.”
Despite her early growth spurt, Sofia, who was born and
raised in Colombia, said she enjoyed a blessed upbringing.
“I never had money problems. We always were in a
comfortable position,” she said. “We attended very good
schools. It was a great life.”
“Did you attend a bi-lingual school?” James asked.
“Believe it or not, I did,” she said with a laugh, mocking
her renowned accent.
Sofia was discovered in her native Colombia at the age
of 17, when a talent scout saw her walking on a beach and
nabbed her for a Pepsi commercial.
The soda ad quickly rose to iconic levels, setting the now
38-year-old actress up for fame.
However, despite her obvious acting talent and glamourous looks, Sofia revealed
she originally set out with
more humble career
plans.
“It was huge. After

R Popper’s Penguins
star Jim Carrey dove
into being a grandfather after his daughter, Jane, gave birth to Jackson
Riley Santana last year, and the
actor admitted that he already has
big plans for the toddler. “When it
happened, it was just like an
explosion of pure bliss,” Jim said
of becoming a grandfather to the
now 14-month-old. “He is the
coolest dude on earth, unless he
gets tired and then he’s a marauding maniac. He’s so clued in and
we play soccer together and he’s
really coordinated, it’s amazing.
“I’m going, ‘Get him in! Get him
in!’” Jim laughed of his encouragement toward Jackson. “I’m the
grandfather that wants to
improve him and stuff like that.
‘Start reading to him right now!
While he’s playing soccer! He
must be a super being!’”
Adoring the tot was easy, but
Jim admitted that it took a little
while for the news to sink in.
“What happened to me is, first
of all, it was like, ‘Grandfather?
Really? Wow. Let me process that
one.’ And my publicist called
immediately (puts on funny
M
voice) ‘Are you serious!’ It was
like, ‘You can’t you can’t ever tell
anyone! John Lennon was never
married,’” Jim said, making a reference to the late Beatle, who was
advised not to promote his relationship with his first wife,
Cynthia Lennon.
Despite his new familial ties,
Jim wasn’t looking to make a family film, but when the script for
Mr Popper’s Penguins came up,
he couldn’t say no to a project
with the wobbly creatures.
“I’ve always loved penguins,
that’s why I did the movie in the
first place,” he said. “Without fail,
they are puppies times 10. They
are pure love. You just can’t resist
them.”
Mr Popper’s Penguins stars Jim
as a businessman who inherits six
penguins. The movie also stars
Carla Gugino, Angela Lansbury
and Jennifer Grey’s main squeeze
Clark Gregg, but it was the
Canadian actor who went home
with the most bruises. “They’re
not trainable at all,” he said of the
Antarctic creatures he spent so
much time on screen with. “They
don’t know the difference between
a finger and a fish because I was
bloodied constantly.”
Mr Popper’s Penguins hits
theatres on June 17.
