President’s Column
by Jonathan Maddox
Hi everyone!
As I’m writing this, I’m excited in anticipation for this weekend’s events. I (along
with a few other Club members) will be participating in the May 14/15 high performance driver’s education event with The Driver’s Edge at MotorSport Ranch
in Cresson.
I took off work early today to have plenty of time to finish prepping my 350Z.
Driver’s education events are a great opportunity to learn about your car, learn
about yourself, and begin to uncover the performance potential engineered into
your impeccably maintained Datsun or Nissan. During a track event, you take in
a huge amount of visual information, experience forces and sights and sounds
that very few people get to encounter, and you leave with more knowledge and
understanding than you came in with.
As I finished with prep I had time to reflect as well. It was three years ago this
month that I participated in my first track event, on the same course. As I get
ready to get up in the wee hours of the morning to head to the track tomorrow, I
can’t help but be excited about this opportunity to give my car another workout
in its most natural environment.
Most Club events are more about the members than about our cars, as you probably know if you’ve attended many. Spending time with friends installing parts,
volunteering, hanging out at car shows, or hitting the road for some twisty backroad fun and delicious meals are all great perks of the Club. But in a track environment, it really is all about the car-driver connection.
At its peak, for 25 minutes it’s just you, your car, an open racetrack, and the wind
rushing around your helmet. 100% focus and concentration are demanded. Your
car is talking to you and you’re responding, guiding it around the course. Do it
right and the laps fly by as you feed the car a smooth, continuous series of inputs,
your thoughts uncluttered by your normal daily cares or concerns; on the track,
the task at hand is all that matters. Experiencing the car-driver connection in
this way is a really unique feeling and quite a rush. It could be the beginning of a
whole new level of appreciation for your car.

President’s Column
by Jonathan Maddox
Hi everyone!
It’s been a few days now since returning to Dallas from Branson, Missouri. I was
part of a group of 6 Club members who made the trip for this year’s edition of the
Branson Z Fest. It was my first experience with BZF, and I had a great time. We
tested our cars on several challenging high-speed drives on some of the curviest roads in Missouri, enjoyed delicious meals at several area restaurants, spent
some time at the local drag strip for some straight-line action, took part in a
car show featuring over 100 lovingly-prepared entries, and met a large group of
fellow Z enthusiasts from all over the country.
But the trip featured an unexpected challenge. The ZCoT members’ teamwork
and problem-solving skills were on display when one Club member’s car developed a clutch fluid leak and required an emergency repair. Even in the heat of
the day during the car show, and many miles from home, the Club members
came together for the cause. With the help of other Branson attendees (quickly
sourcing replacement parts and providing tools and jack stands), the necessary
repairs were made and everyone was able to hit the road on time and without
further incident.
I’m already looking forward to the next chance to hit the road with other Club
members for another event!

Car Show
I joined the Z Club of Texas after a friend and I attended the Courtesy Nissan Car Show in May, 1989. I am the original
owner of both of my Z cars. The 240Z was purchased Memorial Day weekend 1972 in Vancouver Canada, after I could not
find the car available without a long wait in Seattle Washington. The resulting favorable impression on me from owning
this car has caused me to only buy Japanese cars thereafter. The S30 was my daily driver until 1997 or so. I credit the
help of the ZCoT for helping me keep the car roadworthy for so long, and it is now tucked away in my garage as my future
"retirement" project for restoration, with 'only' 208,000 miles on the odometer. It is partially restored, having received a
new paint job in 1988, and a restored interior in around the mid-Nineties. S30 mods include BRE Interpart sway bars and
tension/compression bushings, Bilstein shocks, an aftermarket exhaust system, and Panasport wheels. When Nissan
announced the return of the Z car in 2001, I was quick to put a pre-order deposit down on a 350Z, and was lucky enough
to be the customer for the very first Z33 delivered by Courtesy. Again, the day was made all the more memorable by my
ZCoT friends who came out to help me celebrate my new ride! The car now has 154,800+ miles on the odometer, and has
been coast-to-coast attending every ZCON since 2002. It is my daily driver, show car, and track car. Z33 mods include
Nismo V2 replica front bumper, Nismo LM GT4 wheels (18"F/19"R) with custom centercaps, Stillen swaybars, dBa brake
rotors, Sparco harness bar, custom interior trim, JWT cold air intake, Nismo horns, Z -Enterprises bolt kit and grounding
wires, and CF accessories underhood. For sure, a car club can help one network with others of like interests for
maintaining and improving your favorite ride, but I remain a member of this club because of the wonderful, caring club
members. Through the Z Club of Texas , I have traveled many a road, seen many sights in our wonderful country, learned
about a lot of things about cars and otherwise, met many interesting people from here and abroad, and made lifelong
friendships. Thanks ZCoT! Mr. K sums it up best with: "Love cars, love people, love life!"
50/50 $90 collected, $45 to club, $45 to winner
Special Auction: Mad Mike offered a unique Japanese Z key chain for the benefit
of the club, total collected was $40.
