The Bicycle Casino has had
a plethora of poker tournaments of late, most of which
were reasonably priced
events that offered a chance
for a nice payday.
In their Quantum Reload
event, Massoud Mazhari
took first place money of
$50,000—not a bad first
prize for a $100 buy-in
event—and outlasted a field
of 771 players. He defeated
second-place finisher David

dream about. His first cash
was in $3,000 pot-limit
Omaha where he finished
second, taking in $259,918.
Then he came right back and
won the $10,000 pot-limit
Omaha Championship, for
a whopping $814,436. But
to show he is no one trick
pony, he just missed out on
his third final table, finishing twelfth in the $10,000

Making the WSOP
November Nine is an amazing feat. Coming back the
next year and taking down
one of the most talented
fields in poker is mindboggling. But that is just what
27 year-old Canadian pro
Matthew Jarvis has done.

BLACK FRIDAY: The DOJ’s
Campaign of F EAR
By K. Preston Oade, J.D.
& Arthur S. Reber, Ph.D.
[Editor’s Note: Much
of what has been written
about Black Friday is not
correct. Here, a lawyer and
a psychologist outline the
law, discuss the psychology
of the situation, and urge
players to keep playing
online.]
1. No federal law makes
playing online poker illegal. The Unlawful Internet
Gambling Enforcement Act
(UIGEA) did not change
existing federal gambling
law. It just prohibited the
transmission of wagers that
are “unlawful under any
applicable Federal or State
law…” The “applicable federal” law is the Wire Act of
1961. Thus if it is not illegal under the Wire Act, it is
not illegal under UIGEA.
Federal Courts have ruled
that the Wire Act does not
apply to poker, but only
covers sports betting.
While the UIGEA references state laws, only a
very few states, such as
Washington and Nevada,
specifically prohibit playing
poker online.
2. It is not illegal for a
bank to transfer money to

Hollywood Stars Named in Poker Lawsuit,
Barton Bill Introduced
Caro’s Word: “Watch”
POKER NEWS
real-world poker
games, tells can
account for most of
your profit. But in order to
take advantage, you need
to watch closely. And you
need to know what to watch.
Today’s self-interview provides some advice and some
secrets.
Question 1: How can tells
account for most of your
profit? Isn’t that an exaggeration?
It would be an exaggeration and a falsehood had I said
that tells will account for most
of your profit. Instead, I said
they can. But it’s sort of a parlor trick using words.
Here’s the deal. Let’s say
you’re a fairly sophisticated
player who can overcome the
rake and break exactly even.
You’ve overcome obstacles.
And you should be proud.
Fine. But let’s say you
did it without knowing anything about tells. Now you
study and practice tells and
find yourself making $35 an
hour. Well, it’s reasonable to
assume that your entire profit
is being made by tells. If you
were previously losing $10 an
hour and now make $15 an
hour, then your entire profit
plus $10 an hour is accounted
for by tells. If you had been
earning $28 an hour and
you now earn $40 an hour,
then tells account for $12 an
hour—not most of your profit,
but still a large chunk of it.
So, how much of your
profit from tells depends on
how well you play without
them and how efficiently you
use them. They might only
cut your losses. Or they might
quadruple your winnings, if
you move from $50 an hour to
$200 an hour.
Question 2: I’m having
trouble spotting tells. Why
can’t I see them?
It’s probably because
you’re looking at too many
things and too many opponents at once. Try focusing on
just one player at a time. After
you’ve learned to spot some
tells, you’ll automatically see
more without concentrating on
those players.
Question 3: In your
book on tells, you say that
you should first determine
whether an opponent is acting. But, how do I know if
an opponent is acting?
Try to determine if every

MAGUIRE, KAPLAN NAMED IN
PONZI-SCHEME CLAWBACK SUIT
A high-stakes LA home game featuring Spider-Man star Tobey Maguire,
veteran poker commentator Gabe Kaplan (originally of “Welcome
Back, Kotter” fame), Leonardo DiCaprio, Matt Damon, Ben Affleck,
Dan Cassavetes and several prominent Hollywood businessmen is the
center of a controversy involving former hedge-fund manager Bradley
Ruderman’s ill-gotten gains—some of which he is alleged to have lost at
the poker table.
The lawsuit, filed by a bankruptcy trustee on behalf of Ruderman’s
victims, alleges that Ruderman used the stolen money to pay off
losses to other participants in the game, and that these other players, including Maguire and Kaplan, should be compelled to return their
winnings.
BARTON INTRODUCES INTERNET POKER BILL
A new “poker only” bill designed to regulate online play by Americans
has been introduced in Congress by US Representative Joe Barton
(R-TX). Barton’s bill joins measures previously introduced by Reps.
James McDermott and Barney Frank on the Congressional slate.
Barton’s measure has received the backing of the Poker Players Alliance
and already features co-sponsors from both sides of the aisle. Among
the features of Barton’s bill are express requirements for obtaining an
American license and the banning of credit-card payments, to avoid the
specter of addicted gamblers playing on borrowed money.
NO MOVEMENT ON FULL TILT, AP REFUNDS
No news was decidedly bad news for frustrated online punters still
waiting for signs of online-bankroll refunds from Full Tilt Poker and
Absolute Poker (which also includes UB.com). Despite assurances
from Department of Justice representatives that both sites were
“able” to refund American players’ outstanding balances, both sites
appear confronted by cash shortages threatening their viability and
ongoing existence.
Full Tilt is rumored to be seeking external investment as it seeks
a new future as a (largely) Euro-facing site, facing a shortfall of an
estimated $50-$60 million in deposits reportedly credited to American
players but never actually debited against their US bank accounts.
Absolute Poker’s future appears even bleaker despite a dribbling of
some $500-max withdrawals haltingly issued to a smattering of nonAmerican players in recent weeks. No Americans have received a payment from either site as of the late June press date for this issue.
FS+G PURCHASES HEARTLAND POKER TOUR
Federated Sports + Gaming, parent company of the fledging Federated
Poker League, has announced its acquisition of the Heartland Poker
Tour. FS+G, the effort led by former WSOP commissioner Jeffrey
Pollack and one-time UB spokesperson Annie Duke, picked up the
regional HPT in a deal announced in mid-June. Heartland’s efforts have
been focused in the Midwest and Mountain states, and their complete
slate, often featuring $5,000 main-event buy-ins has also garnered
some cable-television coverage.
NEEMAN BEST IN $1K BORGATA SUMMER
OPEN PRELIM
New Jersey’s Hal Neeman took home $45,710 after capturing the $1,000
no-limit hold’em preliminary event in the 2011 Borgata Summer Open.
The $1K buy-in event was the largest event on the Borgata’s summer
slate, excepting the series’ championship event itself, which had just
begun as of press time. Neeman triumphed over a 153-player field, with
Jack Barnes second ($25,230) and Benedetto Bianco third ($14,099).
CALIFORNIA ONLINE POKER ASSOCIATION
INKS PACT WITH PLAYTECH OFFSHOOT
Should an intrastate California online poker network ever come to fruition, industry veteran Playtech will likely have a hand in programming
the site, through its Sciplay joint venture. Playtech brings a veteran
internet-poker presence to the technical side of any forthcoming network, at one point ranking among the very largest networks in terms
of number of skins (component sites) available for its players.
Veteran poker-industry writer/editor Haley Hintze is the author
of an upcoming book on the Absolute Poker and UltimateBet
online cheating scandals, to be released later this year.

action and every comment is
necessary. When opponents
are acting, in an effort to
deceive you, they’ll do and
say things that aren’t required
to perform their call, bet,
raise, or check.
Whatever those unnecessary actions or words, they
usually represent an attempt
to deceive you. So at that
point, your job is to determine
what these actors are trying to
convince you to do and disappoint them.
Another clue about whether
opponents are acting revolves
around the likelihood that they
think you’re watching. If you
seem to be looking at the flop,
they’re not likely to act to
deceive you at that moment. If
they think they’re being scrutinized, any movements are
more likely to be an act.
Opponents who convey
sadness or uncertainty by
shrugging, sighing, or using
sad voices are acting weak—
on purpose. They usually hold
strong hands. Players who bet
and stay motionless are often
afraid of doing anything to
make you suspicious and are
likely to be bluffing.
When a player isn’t acting, look for involuntary
tells. A trembling hand, for
instance, is almost always an
involuntary reaction after having made a strong hand. It’s
unlikely to be either a bluff or
an act. Seldom call.
Question 4: So, what’s
your method for watching
tells?
I don’t really have a single
method. But I have an attitude. You need to understand
that there might not be any
obvious tells. Accept the fact
that you’re not going to spot
tells every hand. If you only
are confident about a couple
tells an hour, on average,
you’re still going to make
significantly more money
than you would by not watching for them. That’s the right
attitude.
Something that might be
considered a method is to do
what we’ve already discussed
while you’re learning to spot
tells: Focus on just one player
at a time. If that opponent
doesn’t turn out to be a good
tell candidate, move on to
someone else.
One “method” I have for
finding tells in difficult situa(Continued on page 10)

World Series Of Poker
it. The lead changed many
times before Ahmed finished
him off in Omaha/8 when he
scooped the pot with a flush
and a 6-low. Another former
November Niner having a
good run this year is John
Racener who has registered
three cashes and two final
tables so far.
Phil Hellmuth continues
to be heard from this series,
albeit without winning a
bracelet. In the $5,000 triple
chance no-limit hold’em
event, he erupted Poker Bratstyle against an opponent
after a cruel river ended his
day. Hellmuth had pocket
threes and was no doubt
thrilled to have his opponent
calling his all in with As-9h
on a 3h-9d-4c flop. The 9s
turn gave Hellmuth threes
out in brutal fashion during last year’s main event
final table, came back with a
vengeance, steamrolling the
field of 732 who took part in
the $5,000 buy-in six-handed
no-limit hold’em championship. He now has an additional $808,538 to add to last
year’s take of $1,045,743.
Coming tantalizingly
close to following up last
year’s WSOP main event run
and $50,000 players’ championship win with another
bracelet at this year’s series
was Michael Mizrachi. The
Grinder fell one spot short,
losing out to Miami pro
Owais Ahmed, in the $2,500
mixed high-low split 7-card
stud/Omaha event. Mizrachi
was heads up with a 2-to1 chip lead, and then lost
full over his opponent’s trips,
but a 4h on the river spelled
disaster. Still, Hellmuth has
had good results at the series
with two second place finishes, both in non-hold’em
events, the most recent in the
$10,000 7-stud/8 championship. Hellmuth finds himself
second on the Player of the
Year leader board behind
Lamb, and is up to 83 lifetime cashes.
An amateur, Kenneth
Griffin, took down the
$1,000 no-limit hold’em
event, but no one is calling
the first-time bracelet winner—a retired U.S. Marine
and Iraqi war vet—a donkey.
Two pros finally won their
first bracelet. Six years after
making his first final table,
France’s Fabrice Soulier
defeated the 240-player field
in the prestigious $10,000
HORSE world championship, taking home $609,130
in the process. Brazil’s
Andre Akkari won his first
bracelet in the $1,500 nolimit hold’em event.
Newest members of the
two-bracelet club are Ralph
“Rep” Porter and Jason
Mercier. Porter won his second WSOP gold bracelet and
$ $210,615 in the $2,500
razz event against a tough
final table that had two
other prior bracelet winners,
Robert Williamson III, and
Chris Bjorin. Mercier won
his in the $5,000 6-handed
pot-limit Omaha event, besting a field of 507 players.
Along with his second piece
of WSOP jewelry, 24-yearold Mercier earned $619,575
and has now passed the $6
million mark in tournament
winnings.
At press time, there are
still a dozen bracelets to be
handed out. Follow our daily

Black & Blue Monday
ONLINE POKER
Paul “Dr. Pauly” McGuire
Five weeks passed since the DOJ handed down
indictments on April 15, 2011 that decimated the
American online poker market. The poker community was still trying to
deal with the fallout from Black Friday when the online gaming community was struck with a second wave of indictments.
On May 23, 2011, a Maryland court indicted two major players,
ThrillX Systems and K23 Financial Services (BMX Entertainment), for
money laundering and running illegal gambling business. As a result,
domains affiliated with both companies were seized and shut down
by the Feds. Two of those sites were online poker rooms—Doyle’s
Room and True Poker. A pair of sportsbetting sites were also targeted—BookMaker.com and BetEd.com. Also seized were Funtimebingo.
com, Goldbnarchcasino.com, Betgrandesports.com, 2Betdsi.com, and
Betehorse.com.
The back story on how the Feds caught the indicted companies is
something out of a Hollywood screenplay. During their two-year sting,
the Feds created a fake payment processing company called Linwood
Systems. The Feds’ fake company moved millions of dollars from
American soil to offshore accounts and vice versa.
Initially, it seemed as though the Feds unleashed a second wave of
crackdowns because Doyle’s Room was one of the few online poker
sites still operating in the wake of Black Friday. However, they original
scope of their investigation appeared to be sportsbooks and other
online gaming not related to online poker. Doyle’s Room was a recent
acquisition by one of the indicted companies and shut down by its
mere association.
However, even if you’re playing on one of the few sites still in operation, such as Bodog or the Merge Network, the second round of indictments does not bode well. Based on what we’ve seen already, it’s my
opinion both Bodog and Merge are future targets for the Feds and it’s
not a question of if they will get shut down, but when will it happen.
Bodog tried to stay one step ahead of the Feds and recently
changed their domain name from Bodog.com to Bodog.eu, so even if
they are named in a future indictment, the Feds won’t have the power
to seize their European-domiciled domain name.
So what’s next for Americans online poker players? The pros will
adapt because they have no choice but to increase their live play.
Meanwhile, a small group of pros will move to foreign countries. For
the for the casual online poker player, they too will have to play more
live poker in casinos, card rooms (both legal and underground), and at
kitchen table home games.
For the serious online gaming addicts that need a fix by any means
possible, they will have to seek out non-monetary alternatives and
play online poker via social media sites such as Zenga or at membership sites like ClubWPT and newly formed Rise Poker.
Even though the poker community referred to the second round of
indictments as Blue Monday, the affected parties in the sportsbetting
world dubbed it Black Monday. If anything, Black Friday was a wake-up
call for the entire offshore sportsbetting industry.
As a precautionary measure (if the DOJ decided to shut down
sportsbooks), many Americans with offshore accounts quickly cashed
out. A few companies took a proactive approach—Sportsbook.com
and BetUS stated they would no longer accept new accounts from
American players, although old accounts were grandfathered in. But
even then, the news of Black/Blue Monday still surprised many punters
when they discovered news of the indictments.
So what’s the future outlook for offshore sportsbooks? If you’re
a whale and a professional sports bettor, it’ll be business as usual
because even though a premier site like Pinnacle does not accept
Americans, whales use “agents” to handle the accounting hassles for
them. However, for the majority of sports bettors—low-stakes casual
gamblers who don’t live in Vegas or have a neighborhood bookie—the
outlook is bleak. They might be able to find an offshore sportsbook to
fund an account and take the action, but getting paid will be a major
headache.
In the end, Las Vegas is still the safest place to play cards and bet
on sports.

Field of Dreams
BACK IN THE SADDLE AGAIN
By oklahoma SARAH hale
The turnout already seen
at the Rio should prove to
be another record breaking
year. The main event is still
weeks away and endless
hours of poker remain to be
played.
This time of year does
not only bring the starry
eyed players looking for
bracelet events and big
tournaments, but reminds
players of poker’s explosive
popularity that moved many
to begin their own road to
poker because of this event
almost ten years ago.
Players across the world
have traveled to Las Vegas,
filling not only the Rio but
poker rooms throughout
the Las Vegas strip. Cash
games as well as tournament play throughout the
city and are filled day and
night to a peak not seen
through the rest of the
year. The rest of the country seems to be following
suit. Recently, I visited
California and Florida on
vacation as well as for what
I like to call “research.”
In both states poker rooms
were packed with long lists
and players talking about
the World Series and relat-
in all of us.
Living in
Las Vegas I can say that
I love this time of year.
Every day I can go to any
casino and find a full room
of poker hopefuls. I have
been fairly lucky to be on a
hot streak since the WSOP
started. Las Vegas poker
rooms that were used to
seeing more practiced players are once again flooded
with more twenty-something players than are seen
through the year.
Poker has become a
game that youth has a
stranglehold on. Many
young players see the likes
of Jonathan Duhamel, Joe
Cada and Peter Eastgate
winning an unfathomable
amount of money, a bracelet, respect and a place in
the history books, all before
the age of 24. The dreams
of many seem feasible
through these young men
who have proven the games
ultimate prize is attainable
against the massive fields,
poker pros, and poker
legends. The ability that
young players have shown
in recent years is unprecedented and continues to
Thursday Nights in the Poker

shock the poker world.
These young players are
not just lucky but practiced
phenoms who are tournament savvy. However, many
of the poker hopefuls do not
realize the countless hours
accrued online or the endless pages read from the
poker elite or most importantly the immeasurable
amount of “growing pains”
that each Champion has
gone through.
It took 31 years of the
WSOP before the poker
world would be changed
forever. Because of the
World Series of Poker, the
poker boom seems to have
no end in sight. Every poker
player, whether a fan or not
of the WSOP or tournament
play at all, should play in
at least one event in their
lifetime, not only for the
incomparable experience
but to pay homage to the
entity that provided limitless possibilities to a game
that can defy odds and
make an overnight millionaire, but more importantly
laid the foundation that
brought poker to almost
every state in the nation.
For these reasons and more
the World Series of Poker
has earned my eternal support.

The Dread Zone
CONNORS’ CORNER
By BARBARA CONNORS
Poker players are an eccentric lot. Whether
we base our strategy decisions on mathematical expectation, a gut feeling, or the whim of the moment, we
all have peculiarities. For example, take favorite hands. They
can be on the junky side or they can be downright rubbish, but
for some private reason—we’ve won a lot with that hand in the
recent past, or the combination of the two numbers has some
special meaning—we feel good whenever we look down to see
those two particular cards.
Then there’s the other side of the coin: least-favorite hands.
I’m not talking about the obvious holdings like 7-2 or 8-3 offsuit. Yes, it’s annoying to look down and discover a couple of
raggedy junk cards in your hand. But the annoyance is fleeting; cards like these are easily thrown away and instantly
forgotten.
No, I’m talking about the hands that are good enough to
play, often good enough to raise with, and yet you dread the
idea of getting them. The hands you hope the dealer never
gives you because somehow, against all odds, these cards
always seem to lose money for you. Big pairs that are vulnerable to overcards—pocket jacks, pocket tens, even queens.
Aces and kings paired up with moderate-strength kickers.
Primo cards that look good but can never seem to deliver the
goods.
Perhaps it was a another river ace that killed yet another
pair of queens, or a long unbroken string of ace-high flops
every time you held pocket jacks, or a freakishly unlucky
series of hands where some other player always managed
to have A-K whenever you got A-Q. Whatever the reason the
result is the same—we feel apprehension about playing a
least-favorite hand. Cards that should be a seen as a great
opportunity have become our own personal poker Kryptonite.
Unlike the ugly-but-benign 7-2 offsuit that’s easily folded, a
least-favorite hand cannot be thrown away without a second
thought. Barring a large preflop raise in front of you—and
sometimes even with such a raise—you pretty much have to
play the hand. And barring a horrendous flop that makes it
crystal-clear you’re beaten, these hands can be excruciatingly
difficult to get away from after the flop.
But if we can’t throw our least-favorite hand into the muck
pile, we can do the next-closest thing. We can play it timidly. We don’t bet, don’t raise, or don’t raise enough. Please,
please, don’t let me lose again with this hand, or at least,
don’t let me lose too much. This is the real danger of the
least-favorite hand: the fear it conjures up in our minds. Just
as favorite hands make us feel invulnerable, least-favorite
hands make us feel like a sitting duck. It’s not a feeling that
exactly encourages strong aggressive play.
Whenever I look down to see pocket jacks I don’t think,
“Yay, I’ve got a premium hand! I can’t wait to raise.” No, the
thought process is more along the lines of, “Oh, #*@&! I have
to raise.” Believing in my heart that an overcard is going to
flop and then I’ll have to kiss those raising chips goodbye. The
fact that I still raise preflop with jacks is a victory of sheer
will over emotion. But it’s not a battle I always win. There
have been times—too many—when I neglected to raise preflop
with jacks and went on to lose the hand, only to discover that
I probably would have won had I pushed out that preflop raise.
Least-favorite hands are the poster children for Monsters
Under the Bed Syndrome. The result is that the hand usually
gets played in a half-hearted manner, which in turn virtually
guarantees more losses. So the “curse” of the hand keeps
going indefinitely. The way to break the curse is to see the
cards as they really are: strong but vulnerable holdings that,
when played correctly, are profitable in the long run.

Caro’s Word: “Watch”
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 4
tions is to observe opponents
when they don’t think they’re
being watched. Then, suddenly, make it known that you are
watching. This often makes
the opponents uneasy and
you’ll see attempts to manifest tells—which are always
an act. When you see the
change—if you do—remember that strong acts indicate
weakness and weak acts indicate strength.
Question 5: What are
some mistakes common to
watching tells?
It’s a mistake to act
immediately after spotting a
tell. Hesitate and then seem
unsure. That way the opponent is less likely to associate your action with the tell.
If you act immediately, the
opponent often will remember
the action and might think
you’re calling for that reason.
If so, he might not repeat that
tell reliably and you’ll lose
future profit from its use.
It’s also a mistake to give
up when you don’t spot a tell
in a crucial pot—especially
after an opponent has made a
big bet. If he’s bluffing, he’s
under pressure. So, interact.
Talk. Feign the start of a call.
Anything. If he remains animated, he’s probably got a big
hand. If his actions diminish
or he freezes, that’s usually an
indication that the opponents
are conducting themselves
as if to keep a snake from
striking. In other words, they
don’t want you to call and are
hoping that nothing they do
will tempt you. So, they do
nothing. You won’t often spot
tells like that unless you do
something to elicit them.
Question 6: Is there any
value in tells if you don’t
watch for them?
Sure. Some of the most
valuable tells are audible. You
don’t watch these, you listen.
In a way, you can sometimes
beat poker with your eyes
closed.
Listen for sighs. These are
an act that indicates strength.
Listen for humming. If an
opponent bets and you start
to call, the humming will
often cease if it’s a bluff, but
continue if it isn’t. Also, listen
to the breathing. If you hear
it, it’s probably not a bluff.
If an opponent seems to stop
breathing audibly, it often is
a bluff.

Caro’s Word: “Watch”
CONTINUED FROM PAGE 10
And sad voices mean
strong hands.
Question 7: Will watching
for tells help any player win
more money?
No. In fact, most players
who try to incorporate tells
into their poker games fail.
They invent tells that bolster the choice they want to
make. They weigh tells too
heavily, instead of considering
them to be just one of many
factors in making a decision.
And, mostly, they have a bias
toward calling. Therefore,
they ignore tells that would
prompt them to fold and
mentally exaggerate tells that
allow them to call.
All these things are danger-
ous. You might be better off
not trying to use tells at all
than to use them like that.
In poker, tells surround
us. But they don’t have value
unless we watch responsibly.
Mike Caro is widely
regarded as the world’s
foremost authority on poker

The DOJ’s Campaign of Fear
an
online poker
site. T
This is true by virtue
site
of the above. Banks, however, are risk averse, which
has led to the problems
identified below.
3. Banks stopped deposits for the wrong reasons.
Some mistakenly believed
that UIGEA might apply to
poker or were concerned
that a poker site might also
offer wagers on sports betting. Others concluded it
was too difficult to determine which payments were
legal and simply blocked all
deposits to offshore sites.
4. The sites set up “front”
companies. To circumvent
blocked deposits, online
sites set up shell companies. A player’s deposit
to Poker Stars was not
recorded as a transaction
with Stars. Instead, they
used innocuous names …
like “Henry’s Plant Store.”
Federal banking laws, however, make it illegal to hide
the true nature of a transaction or transacting parties’
identities. This is the real
basis for the indictments.
5. Don’t be deceived by
the indictments. The DOJ
is using misdirection to
further its campaign of fear
and to convince others that
UIGEA has real legal teeth.
In fact, the defendants are
charged with money laundering and bank fraud. The
DOJ threw UIGEA into the
pot to confuse and intimidate everyone, especially
the poker community.
6. Expect guilty pleas.
We anticipate guilty pleas
because the bank fraud
charges appear to be on
sound legal footing. But
don’t confuse these pleas
with poker or UIGEA. They
do not change the fact that
without bank fraud charges
the government does not
have a case.
7. The government’s
poker game. The DOJ
“plays poker” at a very
high level, but uses the law
instead of a deck of cards
and is careful to make sure
it will never have to turn
over its real hand. In effect,
DOJ is bluffing poker
players. DOJ assumes that
poker players and the general public will confuse tra-
dditional
ition bank fraud charges
with UIGEA. Thus DOJ’s
Black Friday press release
emphasized UIGEA, not
the traditional bank fraud
charges.
8. Stop the fear. The DOJ
wants to scare poker players to stop us from continuing to play online. It is a
war of wills, and DOJ is
winning. But it cannot win
in the long term unless we
abandon online play. The
outcome of this fight is in
our hands as poker players.
Collectively, we control
the outcome. If we want
it enough, we cannot lose.
And if we don’t want it
enough, we deserve to lose.
9. Keep playing at websites that accept US players. They offer a variety of
deposit methods including
direct deposits, third-party
payment processors like
Pay Pal, and paper checks.
As long as the identities of
all participants are open and
knowable, the deposits are
legal.
10. Be careful. Stick to
poker websites only. Poker
websites that also offer
sports betting, fall under the
Wire Act. This makes it a
“gambling” website under
federal law—in which case
UIGEA applies. Also be
careful to manage your
money. Deposit only what
you can afford to lose and
keep your account at an
acceptable level of risk by
making regular withdrawals. This avoids having too
much money on deposit
with the next DOJ target.
Most of the easy targets,
however, are already gone.
And be forewarned; some
sites might not operate in
accordance with standard
business practices as, apparently, Full Tilt was not.
Law Professor Nelson
Rose on his blog,
GamblingAndTheLaw.com,
observes that the DOJ has
(Cont’d from page 1)
announced “showy legal
action against easy targets
about every other year,”
but lacks “a statute that
clearly makes the activity
illegal.” He points out that
although these scare tactics
have driven some from the
US market, “there are now
wonderful opportunities
for new operators to fill the
vacuum. Unless, of course,
Americans are actually
going to stop playing poker
on the Internet.”

Deception
SENIORS SCENE
By George “The engineer” EPSTEIN
In the game of poker, deception is not cheating or immoral. In all its ramifications, deception and trickery are part of the game and worthy of our full
respect. . .
To be a winner at the game of poker, you must be deceptive:
Give your opponents information that will lead them to make mistakes and it will enable you to win more and bigger pots. Consider
ways to be deceptive at the poker table. . .
Bluffing: Bluffing is the most apparent form of deception. Most
bluffs are intended to force out an opponent. Betting or raising
gives your opponent reason to muck his cards, leaving the pot for
you. At least you hope your bluff—your level of deception—will be
adequate for the job.
Tells: According to Mike Caro, “tells are mannerisms ... that
... allow you to determine what type of hand your opponent is
holding and whether or not he is bluffing” (from Mike Caro’s
Most Profitable Hold’em Advice). Mike discusses “natural tells”
and “actor tells.” In my book, I refer to the latter as “Voluntary
(or Controlled) Tells” (The Greatest Book of Poker for Winners!)
designed to deceive the observer. Mike lists the “Shrug Tell” as an
example: When a player shrugs his shoulders and then bets, he has
a powerful hand, and is trying to convey his indecision in order to
induce a call. I have previously described the Richard B. Reverse
Tell that my poker students use in conjunction with the Esther
Bluff: By leaning forward as he bets, the bluffer is sending the
message of strength, thereby encouraging his opponent to fold.
Listening, Probing: In The Psychology of Poker, Dr. Alan
Schoonmaker discusses unique ways to gain information: Listen
for comments made by opponents and probe by asking questions
to get more information. Knowing this, a smart player who does
not have an image of deception, can offer statements that mislead
his opponent. Deception...
Slow-Play, Sandbag, Check-Raise: If you flop a powerful
hand, instead of betting or raising, a slow-player checks rather
than bets. A vivid example is offered by Lou Krieger in his book,
Hold’em Excellence: From Beginner to Winner, If you catch the nut
flush on the flop, “your interest lies not in reducing the number
of opponents but in luring them onward,to the turn and the river,
when the bets double and you can extract maximum profit from
them.”
Similarly, a sandbagger will check after flopping a monster
hand, and then raise if anyone bets. A check-raiser checks from
an early or middle position, hoping that an opponent will then bet.
After others call, the check-raiser then “drops the bomb” by raising to build the pot. Deception...
In all of these cases, deception is used to keep opponents in
the hand and to build the pot.
Evaluating the Players: Most players evaluate opponents’
traits: tight or loose, passive or aggressive, timid, calling-station,
or deceptive. Recognizing this, a deceptive player may use his
tight image to be more effective in bluffing. After playing a while,
he may change from tight to loose-aggressive to gain an advantage over his opponents who still are expecting him to play his
hands tight.
A Unique Act of Deception: In a recent column in Poker Player
Newspaper, one of my favorite columnists, Ashley Adams, offered
a very different act of deception: When about to make a seat
change, “inquire about the fate of the last occupant to throw off
any suspicion that you are a skillful player” who is making the
change to gain better betting position over selected opponents;
e.g., to bet after a maniac.
Other Forms of Deception?: Can you suggest other forms of
deception? Explain your rationale. E-mail to [email protected].
A prize awaits the best submissions. Offer stands for two weeks
after publication of this column. . .

Trumped-Up Flops
STRAIGHT SKINNY
By RICHARD G. BURKE
In their books, Harrington on Cash Games,
Harrington and Robertie wrote that you
have a bluffing opportunity heads-up when the dealer
flops all the same suit. Let’s see why.
If you hold a suited hold’em hand, then the probability
that the dealer flops three of your suit equals 0.008418,
about 118-to-1 against, as given by C(11,3)/C(50,3). The
probability that the dealer pitched you two suited cards
equals 4/17, or 0.23529. So, before you look at your hand
the probability of your flopping a flush equals their product, 0.00198, about 504-to-1 against. (You could offer side
bet odds of 250-to-1 and make a tidy profit.)
If you have a suited hand then the probability that the
dealer flops three of a different suit equals 0.04378, from
3*C(13,3)/C(50,3), or about 22-to-1 against.
If you have an unsuited hand, itself a probability of
0.76471, then the probability that the dealer flops three
cards of either of your suits equals 0.02245, about
44-to-1 against, from the expression, 2*C(12,3)/C(50,3).
More likely, you whiff the flop with a probability given by
2*C(13,3)/C(50,3), which equals 0.02918, odds against of
about 33-to-1.
All these numbers can get confusTrumped-Up Flop

of the time. You expect a flush draw
33 percent of the time. One time in twenty-six you should
make a flush.
Remember that when you do flop a flush, it almost
doesn’t matter how high: in a ten-handed game you have
a 76 percent chance of having the only flush! And, as
the number of your opponents decrease, your chances
increase.
In a no-limit game, you frequently find yourself headsup. With a trumped-up flop how often does your headsup opponent have a flush or its draw? Her chances also
appear in the table: she whiffs ~2/3 of the time, has a
draw ~1/3 of the time and a flush about one time in 26,
the same as you.
Harrington and Robertie pointed out that since your
heads-up opponent whiffs 2/3 of the time you have a
good bluffing opportunity. An opening bet of a half-pot or
more makes it tough for her call. If she opens the postflop betting, then raising may turn the possession arrow
your way.
The third of the time that you have a trump makes your
bet a semi-bluff, and then even if she calls, you still have
outs. Of course you could also have a pair, two pairs, etc.,
for additional strength.
With two or more opponents, you have problems. If you
have no trumps, then the approximate probability that neither of your opponents has a trump equals 0.37, as given
by C(37,4)/C(47,4), which means either opponent has one
or more trumps 63 percent of the time. Plus, the more
opponents you face, the further your fold equity erodes.
You should expect to see an all-the-same-suit flop every
half-hour or so. The probability of a suited flop equals
0.05176: we figure that by computing the ways to flop
three of the same suit, 4*C(13,3), and then divide by all
the ways to flop three cards, C(52,3). So, about one flop
in nineteen has all three ranks in the same suit. At thirtyeight hands per hour using an automatic shuffler, a good
bluffing opportunity twice an hour has some potential.
Good hunting.

Why Am I Losing?

CARD SENSE
By ASHLEY ADAMS
“Why am I losing?” This may be the most frequent question asked
by good, thoughtful, and skilled players. They’ve read the books and
articles about poker strategy and keep meticulous written records.
Despite that, they find themselves losing to players who seemingly
aren’t nearly as smart, attentive, or skilled.
The thoughtful player is used to mastering whatever challenge
he takes up. When he was a student, if he studied, attended class,
and applied himself, he got at least a “B,” and often an “A.” When
he worked at something he was generally successful. But here in
pokerland, though he has applied the same approach, he finds that
he’s failing more often than not—while others, so it seems, are succeeding.
I see nine possible reasons why the good player may be losing
while the poor player appears to be winning. Let’s look at each in
turn. This will take me a couple of articles—so please be patient. I
think it will be worth it.
Reason No. 1: The sample size is too small. So you’ve lost for a
few sessions. That doesn’t mean that you are a losing player. It could
well not mean anything. It’s one big game. The fact that after five
hours, sixteen hours, or even sixty hours you might be down doesn’t
mean that you will be, over the long run, a loser. The general consensus among experts is that it takes about 500 hours or 15,000 hands
to truly determine whether you are beating the game you’re in.
Reason No. 2: Your opponents are losing and lying. If your
opponent’s playing hunches, not attentive to strategy, playing loosely and passively, and claiming to be winning, he may very well be
mistaken. Though his stacks may seem large at the moment, there is
really no way for you to assess whether your opponents are winners
in the long run. And if they fail to keep accurate records, they may
well be fooling themselves too. Given the amount of ego and dishonesty that is often present at the poker table, they may be trying
to save face by deliberately exaggerating their wins and minimizing
their losses. Don’t believe what you hear or even what you see at
the poker table. Just because someone says he’s a winning player
doesn’t mean he is.
Reason No. 3: You may not be as good as you think. Reading
books and articles, having a strong desire to win, and even attempting to apply what you’ve learned is no guarantee that you are playing well. Smart and thoughtful poker players are can be bad poker
players. Many smart and studious players misapply what they have
learned by playing too tightly, conservatively, and timidly—especially
when large pots are involved. They may understand the concept of
pot odds, but when the rubber meets the road they erroneously
avoid risk when they should embrace it. Otherwise technically proficient players often are more concerned with not being embarrassed
with a losing showdown than they are with the pot odds that they
are being offered for a call. Similarly, they often fail to bet or raise
aggressively when they are in the lead, losing out on the additional
winnings a truly skillful player would accumulate. Just because you
know the importance of skill in poker doesn’t mean you possess it.
Reason No. 4: You have failed to appreciate the full cost of
playing in a public poker room. You may be beating the other players by a significant amount but still not beating the game because
of the combined cost of the rake or time charge, the tips, and the
bad beat or high hand take-out. You may in fact be as much as 15
to 20 percent better than your opponents. But in the public poker
rooms, especially the lower stakes games, the effective tax on your
winnings can be as high as 20 percent or more. So your bottom
line may be in the red even if you are significantly better than your
opponents.
In my next article I’ll examine the remaining reasons why you
might be losing.
