Audiences were delighted by
a spectacular treat at the
recent production of William
Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’
performed by students from
the
English School of
Kyrenia’s Secondary School Drama Department. The talented young cast
captivated their audiences by skilfully weaving the magical tale of power
and deceit, fairies, monsters, avenging wrongs and true love conquering all.
All this was achieved whilst tackling the original English script by
Shakespeare. The production was truly outstanding and proved to be a
dramatic high-point in the school’s history of performances. The outdoor
setting of the school amphitheatre also added to the magic of the show.

Fırtına – Atmosferik bir Dış Mekan Başarısı
The English School of Kyrenia Ortaokul-Lise Drama öğrencileri tarafından
sahnelenen William Shakespeare’e ait ‘Fırtına’ oyunu seyirciler için gerçek
bir görsel şölen sundu. Yetenekli ve genç oyuncu kadrosu, periler,
yaratıklar, güç ve hilekarlık dolu, intikamı alınan yanlışlıklar ile gerçek aşkın
herzaman kazandığı bu büyülü hikayeyi nakış işlercesine başarılı bir
şekilde sahneye koyarak seyircileri etkilediler. Üstelik bunu, Shakespeare
tarafından yazılan orijinal İngilizce oyun metni ile başardılar. Prodüksiyon
gerçekten olağanüstü bir sahnelenişle okulun performanslar tarihine
dramatik bir zirve yapmış oldu. Dış mekan olarak okul amfitiyatrosunda
sahnelenmiş olması oyuna atmosferik bir büyü kattı.

Hello to all of the students, parents, and staff of
The English School of Kyrenia,
As we approach the end of an exceptional term I’m reminded of so
many examples of excellent work from so many contributors. Our
students are working very hard with a strong intent to be the very
best that they can be. Colleagues have arranged so many performances that were excellent, and the number of internationally renowned events we host and deliver really is exciting. It is the time
to say thank you to one and all for making our work so exceptional. As parents you do
so much to make sure that the variety of excellent opportunities for your children are
embraced, and my own recollection in helping to bring up four of my own children is
that at times you think you might be running a fast-food restaurant and a taxi service
combined!
As you read this edition of the Newsletter, we hope you will have the time to reflect on
how much change has taken place over the last several years. We now have an active
Duke of Edinburgh International Award programme for students which you can read all
about. Our Leadership courses are more widespread when it comes to the age of students that can take part, and you will also be able to read about more international
sporting opportunities and fixtures. Our MUN is much larger, 110 participated in our
last MUNKY, so many more than on any previous occasion. Using the open air arena for
a superb Shakespearean production has taken place, and the variety of institutions
and countries our Y13 students aspire to attend is many fold greater than ever before.
Again, everything is moving in the right direction, thanks to your support and the dedication of staff.
So enjoy your reading, and we hope you’ll begin to imagine how fortunate our students
are to be able to access such world-class opportunities as they develop.

personeline merhaba,
Olağanüstü bir dönemin daha sonuna yaklaşırken, birçok
destekçinin yardımıyla gerçekleşen pek çok mükemmel örneği
hatırıma getirmekteyim. Öğrencilerimiz, ellerinden gelenin en iyisini
yapmaya gayret ederek, kararlı bir şekilde ve çok yoğun çalışıyorlar.
Çalışma arkadaşlarımın ise, bu denli harika gösteriyle, uluslararası
etkinliği düzenlemek ve ev sahipliği yapabilmek için verdiği uğraş
oldukça heyecan verici. Şimdi bu olağanüstü işlere katkısı olan herkese teşekkür etme zamanıdır. Siz velilerimiz ise, okul olarak sunmakta olduğumuz fırsatlara çocuklarınızın adapte olmalarına yardımcı oluyorsunuz. Dört çocuk sahibi birisi
olarak biliyorum ki, zaman zaman hepiniz kendinizi bir fast-food restoranı işletmecisi
veya taksi hizmeti veren biri gibi hissediyorsunuz!
Bu haber bültenini okurken, dilerim geçen yıllar içinde yaşanan değişimleri fark edebilecek zamanı bulabileceksiniz. Detaylarını göreceğiniz üzere, artık öğrencilerimiz için
aktif bir Duke of Edinburgh International Award programına sahibiz. Liderlik derslerimiz
ise, daha genç yaş gruplarına hitap eder duruma gelmiştir. Ayrıca bültende birçok
uluslararası spor karşılaşmalarıyla ilgili haberler bulabileceksiniz. Bu seferki MUN konferansımız, 110 kişilik öğrenci katılımıyla bir öncekinden çok daha büyük olmuştur.
Dışarıdaki açıkhava gösteri alanı, harika bir Shakespeare oyununa ev sahipliği yapmıştır ve 13. Sınıf öğrencilerimiz, geçen yıldan farklı olarak daha değişik ülkelere başvurularda bulunuyorlar. Ve yine herşey olması gereken istikamete doğru yol alıyor,
desteğiniz için sizlere, özverili çalışmaları için öğretmenlere çok teşekkür ediyorum.
Keyifle okuyunuz… Umuyoruz ki böylece, okulumuzun nasıl geliştiğini ve öğrencilerimize dünya çapındaki fırsatlara ulaşabilecek şansı sunabildiğini düşünmeye
başlayacaksınız.

My Experience at the 2015 Cyprus Jazz Workshop – 18-23 July 2015

“There were auditions and a small test on the first day to
determine what level we were at. I was a little nervous but I do
enjoy performing. I am more in to pop or soft rock music, so
when I was asked why I signed up for the workshop I explained
that I was interested in learning all types of music and had done
some Blues at school.
I really enjoyed the experience, even though it was a bit of an
effort giving up some of my summer holiday and travelling to the
European University of Nicosia every day, but I made some
friends and learned a lot. We had some history of Jazz lessons
and I understand a lot more now where jazz comes from and
what it's all about.
The highlight was meeting Cahit Kutrafalı and hearing him play
bass.
We had a performance at the end of the workshop in front of a
few hundred people, my guitar group performed an original
composition which I helped with, and I also wrote and sang the
lyrics.
I would recommend more ESK students signing up next year; it was a great experience and a good

The 2015 Cyprus Jazz Workshop, sponsored by the US Embassy was the first jazz camp to be held on
the island featuring international jazz artist/educators from various national countries. Courses
taught included Jazz Improvisation/Jazz Theory, Jazz Master Classes, Jazz Combos, Jazz Big Bands,
plus Faculty Concerts each day.

Year 2 Alagadi Trip – 21 & 22 September 2015

This term, in conjunction with their topic, Under the Sea, Year 2 took a trip to Alagadi Beach Turtle
Project. They had the opportunity to see turtle nests being uncovered and hear all about the turtle lifecycle from the local volunteer experts. This year the children were also lucky enough to see, and
touch, baby turtles that the centre was working with to release. They were amazed by the size of an
adult turtle shell, in comparison to the baby ones, and were all very excited to learn new facts. They
had a terrific time, and many hope to go again and maybe see a release!
2. Sınıfların Alagadi Gezisi – 21 ve 22 Eylül 2015

Bu dönem, ‘Deniz Atında’ temaları ile bağlantılı olarak 2. Sınıf öğrencileri Alagadi Sahili Kaplumbağa
Projesi’ne bir gezi gerçekleştirdiler. Kaplumbağa yuvalarının açılmasını izleme olanağı bulan çocuklar,
gönüllü uzmanlardan kaplumbağaların yaşam döngüleriyle ilgili bilgi de edindiler. Bu yılki 2. Sınıf
çocukları merkezin doğaya bırakmak üzere hazırladığı yavru kaplumbağaları görüp dokunabildikleri
için çok şanslıydılar. Yetişkin bir kaplumbağanın kabuk ölçüsünü, bir yavru kaplumbağanınkine
kıyasla ne kadar büyük olabileceğine çok şaşırdılar; bu arada kaplumbağalarla ilgili pek çok şey
öğrendiler. Gezide çok iyi vakit geçiren 2. Sınıflar, yavru kaplumbağaların doğaya bırakılmalarını
görmek için merkeze yeniden gitmeye can atıyor!

My Trip to Denmark – August 2015

Last October, a number of students from ESK participated in a bi-communal, entrepreneurial competition in South Cyprus, hosted by an organisation called JA (Junior Achievement) Cyprus. A total of 100
students participated, including both Greek and Turkish Cypriots. The purpose of the competition was
two-fold: firstly, it would serve as an opportunity for youngsters on both sides of the island to mingle
and perhaps become more tolerant towards one another; and secondly, it would induce entrepreneurial spirit into the youth of our island.
I was fortunate enough to be a member of the winning team, and as a result I was invited to Denmark
for a business conference, which would be attended by aspiring entrepreneurs from all over the
world.
When I arrived in Denmark, I was joyfully reunited with my team-mates. We checked into a hostel and
had a few hours to relax before the conference began. The first day involved an introductory reception
followed by a number of motivational speakers. After a long, tiring day, we were glad to return to the
hostel and sleep.
I awoke at 6:00 the next day for the optional Detoxification boot camp which involved a morning swim
and jog (the concept was aimed primarily at those looking to recover from a hangover but I participated nevertheless). The breakfast to-go that we were given to eat while travelling on a train coupled with
the casual-business dress-code made me feel like a true businessman. The day was spent at a university where a number of inspiring people shared their personal experiences through captivating
talks. One of the speakers was the ex-CEO of LEGO and he explained how he saved the company from
bankruptcy in 2001. Upon returning to the hostel later that night, I and one of my team-mates decided to venture to a nearby amusement park which happened to be the perfect end to a perfect day.
The third day was a little more action-packed. After being arranged into groups and participating in
team-bonding activities, we were set off on an adventurous journey through Copenhagen, in which we
were to visit start-ups (premature businesses), learn about their products and give advice on how they
could improve. We were given the opportunity to sample delicious bottled cocktails and gamble on
the statistics of a cable-making company. The day ended with a rooftop barbeque overlooking the
beautiful city of Copenhagen.

The fourth and final day of the conference involved more inspiring speakers. After eating lunch, two
men riding electronic skateboards rolled-up and gave us a short talk on their fascinating products
before allowing us to have a go riding them. We then returned to the hostel to get ready for a gala dinner which was held on the top floor of a tall, glass building overlooking the city; we were able to enjoy
a breathtakingly beautiful sunset over the city while feasting on a delicious 3-course meal and being
entertained by Denmark’s beat-boxing champion.
The Conference was an amazing and truly unforgettable experience, not only did I grow as a person,
but I enjoyed myself a great deal while making a number of great new friends. I would like to thank
the school and Ms. Suman for making my experience a possibility and encourage all ESK students
(who are at least 15 and studying business studies) to participate in the competition this year.

Y4 Egyptian Wow Day – 22 September 2015

On Tuesday 22nd September children and teachers in Year 4 arrived at school dressed as Pharaohs, Gods & Goddesses and mummies ready
for their Ancient Egyptian Wow Day as an exciting start to their History topic this term.
The morning began with the children participating in different activities in each of the 3 classrooms, ranging from cracking hieroglyphic codes
to drawing symmetrical Scarab Beetles to making 3D pyramids from 2D nets. Turkish lessons
that day also incorporated the topic & children
were treated to stories about the Mystery of the
Pyramids. In the afternoon, following their art
lesson where they studied images of Egyptian
eyes, the children practised one of their favourite songs, Amazing Egyptians including all the
actions. With great excitement, they then performed it for the children in Nursery and Reception as well as Year 1 & 2 and finally left the Eco
building, as they ‘Walked like an Egyptian,’ to a
huge round of applause.
A fantastic day was had by all (teachers included).

22 Eylül, Salı günü 4. Sınıf öğrenci ve öğretmenleri bu dönemki Tarih konuları Antik
Mısırlılara heyecanlı bir başlangıç yapmak
üzere okula Firavunlar, Tanrılar ile
Tanrıçalar, ve mumyalar olarak giyinerek
geldiler.
Sabah çocukların her üç sınıfta da
gerçekleşen, hiyografik şifreleri kırmak,
simetrik ‘Scarab Beetle’ (eski Mısırlıların
kutsal saydıkları bokböceği) resimleri çizmek, 2-boyutlu ağlar kullanarak 3-boyutlu
piramitler yapmak dahil, farklı faaliyetlere
katılarak geçti. Türkçe derslerinde de gün ve
temaya uygun çalışmalar yapan öğrenciler
Piramitlerin Gizemi’ne yönelik hikayeler
dinlediler. Öğleden sonra ise, Mısırlı
gözlerden oluşan resimler inceledikleri resim
derslerinin ardından çocuklar, en sevdiklerin
şarkılardan biri olan ‘Amazing Egyptians’ı
tüm hareketleriyle çalışma olanağı buldular.
Sonrasında, büyü bir heyecanla Nursery ve
Reception, daha sonra da 1 ve 2. Sınıf
öğrencilerine gösteri yaptılar. Eko Binası’ndan büyük bir alkış alarak ‘Walk Like an
Egyptian’ şarkısının hareketlerine uygun
olarak birer Mısırlı gibi yürüyerek ayrıldılar.

Y6 Karpaz Residential Blog – 6-9 October 2015

Tuesday, 6 October
After an easy journey we arrived at Balci Plaza to be warmly greeted by Hassan. We learned which
rooms we were in and unpacked all of our cases, exhausted from this work we sat down and enjoyed
a packed lunch. Our afternoon activities included shelter building with Mr Roberts, map-work and
orienteering with Mrs Advji and creating natural water filters on the beach with Miss King. All of the
activities tested our creativity and teamwork; we did well in these elements.
After dinner tonight we've got a wonderful campfire planned and our guest stars, Mrs Green and Mrs
Simmons, are looking forward to entertaining us with a few songs.
We're all having a lovely time, lots of smiles, team-work and fun; we're just hoping the weather stays
good!
Wednesday, 7 October
This morning, after a blustery night's sleep, we ate a fantastic breakfast and prepared for our coastal
walk. In groups we explored the Karpaz coastline and saw such features as islands, coastal erosion,
crystal salt pools as well as coral reefs which used to be under the sea.
During our walk we sketched, painted and used charcoal to create pictures of some of the features
we saw.
We're about to have our lunch now and then this afternoon have a packed agenda which includes
orienteering skills, a tracking activity, compass work and animal habitat exploration.
We're all having a great time, lots of fun and singing last night and we're looking forward to roasted
marshmallows and more activities this evening.

Thursday, 8 October
Yesterday afternoon we continued our activities with some animal habitat
constructions, these were very successful and we really enjoyed the challenge
of re-creating possible shelters that could be used by different animals. We
also learned and practised some valuable tracking skills as well as using
compasses and completing an orienteering challenge.
After a delicious dinner, which was followed by ice-cream, we spent a little time
on the beach for a tea-light and marshmallow star-gaze session, this was a
lovely, calm event but we all left with very sticky fingers.
Our final activity was a wide game where we had to find the teachers who were
hiding around the site, one of our favourite events of the day as running
around at night with torches is great fun!
Today we're off to Aphilion and then Golden Beach for the Beach Olympics
challenge, we all had plenty of sleep last night and some of us had to be
woken by our teachers this morning!
P.S We've added a photograph from Tuesday evening when we celebrated Kaya Y's birthday with
some delicious cake.

Friday, 9 October
What a day! After breakfast yesterday morning we were driven by coach to Ayfilon, an ancient Basilica
which is over 1500 years old. When we arrived, the restaurant manager explained to us how they
power the entire facility using only solar energy, this included all air-conditioning, lighting and cooking
facilities. Moving from the modern to the ancient, we then explored the remains of the Basilica where
we were treated to some very entertaining improvised drama by our teachers during the telling of a
local myth. The teachers quickly fell into their roles (Mr Aktansoy actually did fall during
his) and seemed to relish being on the stage. We studied and sketched the remains of a harbour
which stood over 2000 years ago, an incredibly impressive piece of history at a very atmospheric
sight.
From there we travelled to Golden Beach for the excellent Beach Olympic challenge. The competition
consisted of eight different events from a tug-of-war to piggy-back races across the sand; these tested
our strength, stamina and ability to run in a straight line on sand with unstable, giggling people on our
backs.
With ice-cream to replenish our energy, we headed back to Balci Plaza for our final evening's
entertainment - the highlight of the trip, a talent show which compares to no other. Singing, comedy,
dancing and a ridiculous sketch which involved Mr Roberts and Mrs Aktash being covered in flour,
water and eggs, followed by poor Mr Aktansoy and Mrs Avdji being treated to a make-over with face
paints! This was all topped off by a mega disco, featuring tradition music as well as some modern
dance-floor fillers.
Finally Hasan Balci treated us to a live performance on his saz, something that was a first for him and
mesmerising for his audience. The stars shone brightly, both in the sky and on the stage, truly a night
to remember.
This morning we're packing our bags and playing a great team game called 'Colours' before preparing
to head home, it's been a wonderful trip, full of excitement, learning, new experiences and friendship.
We're greatly looking forward to seeing you all later but are sorry to see our Year 6 residential coming
to an end.

7. Sınıf Öğrencilerimizin “Yazılı Basın Kaynakları Gezisi” – 15 Eylül 2015
Yazan Sonay Nur, Ortaokul-Lise Bölümü Türkçe Öğretmeni
2015–2016 eğitim ve öğretim yılının ilk gezisi 15 Eylül 2015 tarihinde, 7. Sınıf Türkçe dersi
kapsamında “Tematik Bazlı” bir gezi-gözlem çalışması olarak gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu gezimizdeki
amacımız; okumanın önemini kavramanın yanı sıra iyi bir okuyucu olmanın özelliklerini benimsetmek
ve kütüphanelere severek gitme alışkanlığı kazandırmaktır. Aynı zamanda kütüphanelerin de işleyiş
şekilleri hakkında “farkındalık” yaratabilmekti.
Bu gezimizde ilk olarak Yakın Doğu Üniversitesi Kütüphanesi ziyaret edilmiştir. Öğrencilerimiz burada
kitap türleri hakkında bilgi almanın yanı sıra kitapların nasıl ve hangi ölçütlere göre yerleştirildiği ile
ilgili olarak da bilgi edinme olanağını görerek ve yaşayarak elde etmişlerdir.
İkinci olarak ziyaret ettiğimiz yer KIBRIS Gazetesi olmuştur. Gazete binası gezisi sırasında, haberlerin
ne şekilde toplanıp basıldığını öğrenmek ve görmek öğrencilerimize gerçekten çok ilginç geldiğini
bizzat gözlemlemiş olduk. Öğrencilerimiz büyük bir heyecanla gerçekleştirilen çalışmaları izleyip yetkililerin vermiş oldukları bilgileri hafızalarından kolay kolay silinmeyecek bir şekilde kaydetmişlerdir.
Bu ziyaret sırasında öğrencilerimiz “Medya ve İletişim” hakkında bilgi edinebilmek amacıyla sordukları
sorulara hayli ayrıntılı ve net yanıtlar aldıkları için mutlu olmuşlardır.
Bu eğitici ve öğretici gezinin gerçekleştirilmesinde emeği geçen herkese buradan teşekkürlerimizi
sunarız.
Year 7’s “Printed Media Resources Trip”
– 15 September 2015

The first trip of the 2015–2016 Academic Year took place on
Tuesday, 15th September within the scope of the Year 7 Turkish curriculum as a thematic observational-educational trip.
The aim of this trip was to help develop a greater understanding the importance of reading and adopting the attributes of a good reader, as well as the habit of going to the library. At the same time, to
create “awareness” on the workings of a library.
Our first visit was to the Near East University Library. Our students had the opportunity to gather information about different types of books as well as how and according to which criteria the books are
organised within the library.
The second stop of the trip was to the KIBRIS Newspaper. During a tour of the newspaper building,
students got to see first-hand how the news is collected and printed. Students observed the work carried out and were fortunate enough to have Q&A time with media specialists.
Our students were very pleased to receive clear and detailed answers to the questions they asked
during this trip based on ‘Media and Communication’.
We would like to say thank you to everyone who made this wonderful educational trip possible.

Early Maths Success – September 2015

Back in June, 30 students from year 10 (our current year 11) sat the IGCSE exam in mathematics and
the results that our students achieved were nothing short of exceptional. I am delighted to report that
there was a 100% pass rate and the grades that were achieved would compare very favourably with
most schools worldwide, and this being a year earlier than students would normally take an IGCSE
exam. 40% of our students received A* grades, 46.7% received A* or A grades, 76.7% received A* to
B grades and 97% received A* to C grades.
I would like to thank and congratulate a fantastic group of students on these truly world class results. They have shown incredible levels of maturity, commitment and dedication and should be very
proud of their achievements. We at ESK are certainly proud of them.
I would also like to praise the talented and dedicated teachers in the mathematics department for all
of their efforts in helping our wonderful students to achieve their goals. We wish our students similar
success in the rest of their subjects when they come to sit their remaining IGCSE exams next summer.
Erken Gelen Matematik Başarısı – Eylül 2015

Geçtiğimiz Haziran ayında 10. Sınıflarımızdan (şu anki 11. Sınıflarımız) 30 öğrenci matematik IGCSE
sınavına girdiler; öğrencilerimizin başarısının olağanüstü olduğunu açıklamaktan kıvançlıyız. Bunun,
bu öğrencilerin normalde IGCSE sınavına girecekleri zamandan bir yıl erken olmasına rağmen %100
bir geçme oranı olduğunu bildirmekten ve notların dünya genelindeki okullarla karşılaştırılabilir bir
düzeyde olduğunu söylemekten memnuniyet duymaktayım. Öğrencilerimizin %40ı A* notu alırken, %
46.7si A* veya A notunu, %76.7si A*- B arası notlar ve %97sinin ise A*- C arası notlar elde ettiler.

On Thursday 26th November 3F and 3L and Friday 27th November 3M and 3R had a thoroughly enjoyable Salamis trip as part of our Romans topic. Teachers and children were dressed up as Romans for
the day and we pretended to step back in time as we wandered around the Roman ruins. The children
found it fascinating learning about Romans from our Salamis guide.

3. Sınıf öğrencileri Romalılar tema derslerinin bir bölümü olarak Salamis’e eğlenceli bir gezi
gerçekleştirdiler. Öğrencilerle birlikte öğretmenler güne özel olarak Romalılar gibi giyinerek zaman
içinde bir yolculuk yaptılar ve antik Roma kentini harika kostümleri içerisinde dolaştılar. Çocuklar
Salamis tur rehberimizin Romalılar hakkında anlattıklarını büyük bir ilgiyle dinlediler.

Over 80/110 students took part in a Model United Nations Kyrenia (M.U.N – KY) conference hosted
at the English School Kyrenia on the 27th & 28th November 2015.
Students from 19 Mayis Turk Marif College (TMK), TED, Doga, Guzelyurt TMK, students from English
School of Nicosia, G.C School of Careers, United Nations Youth Association (UNYSA) & ESK took the
role of a delegate from a given country and debated world issues in four committees.
M.U.N can be described as a simulation of the UN. Students from different schools, backgrounds,
countries and cultures come together at conferences as delegates – representatives - of countries. As
a team, these delegates create resolutions outlining how they think important world issues, such as
Refugees or International terrorism, should be solved. Together, they spend hours debating these resolutions; getting to know the issue, the format of a real UN debate, and each other in the process.
They give passionate speeches about their resolutions, pick holes in other delegates’ arguments, debate in accordance to the ‘Parliamentary Procedure’ of the UN and persuade the represented nations
to vote for or against resolutions. They gain an understanding of their countries, global issues and the
UN, at the same time as learning how to distance personal feelings from the policy of their delegation.
But most of all, for the few days of the conference, young students become mature delegates, and
make friends with other delegates from around the world. MUN conferences are a truly memorable
experience that give students a sense of being part of something extraordinary and momentous, yet
immensely enjoyable and fun.
The conference was organised by 8 students, the MUN 2015 team: Tolga Atun, Kaan Ibrahim, Cecilie
Neilson, Holly Cartwright, Noah Swanson, Bilge Nevzat, Tumen Dambiev & Kayra Şadi. ESK students
were ‘Chairs’ in each of the 4 committees. The Secretary General was Tolga Atun & President of the
General Assembly was Bilge Nevzat. The technical team & photographers were also ESK students. Approximately, 25 ESK students also made up the administration team. The MUN team arranged sponsorship with Turkcell and set up their own web site www.mun-ky.com.
A social event was organised for Friday evening at Bella View Hotel, a chance for students from other
schools to get to know each other in less formal surroundings.
Saturday involved debating in committees, then meeting all together in the General Assembly where
there was more debating on resolutions & delegates voted whether to pass or fail resolutions.
In the opening ceremony, Askgul Suman, the MUN Director reminded delegates that 2015 marks the
70th anniversary of the formation of the United Nations and that the General Secretary Ban Ki Moon
had stated that the anniversary stood as a reminder to strengthen our collective resolve to do more to
promote peace and security, sustainable development and human rights and these ideas were used
to select the topics to be debated at the conference.
MUN organisers, Firat Kandamish and Zeki Murad were proud of how students from all schools had
prepared for the event. “Even though many of the delegates were new to MUN, they had the courage
to take part and we hope that as well as the usual skills associated with MUN such as research, confidence, public speaking and negotiation, they have learnt to work together.
It is our hope that more students from schools all over Cyprus will join us next year, learn about Model
United Nations and become the leaders of tomorrow.”

Yaklaşık 80/100 öğrenci 27 ve 28 Kasım 2015’te the English School of Kyrenia (ESK) Model
Birleşmiş Milletler Girne (MUN-KY) konferansına katıldı.
19 Mayıs Türk Maarif Koleji’nden (TMK), TED’den, Güzelyurt TMK’dan, English School of Nicosia, G.C
School of Careers, United Nations Youth Association (UNYSA) ve ESK’den gelen öğrenciler onlara
verilen bir ülkeden elçi olarak dünya sorunlarını dört farklı komitede tartıştılar.
M.U.N bir Birleşmiş Milletler simülasyonu olarak düşünülebilir. Başka okullardan, donanımlardan,
ülkelerden ve kültürlerden gelen öğrenciler konferansta ülkelerinin elçileri – temsilcileri - olarak bir
araya gelirler. Ekip olarak bu elçiler önemli dünya problemlerine değinerek çözüm üretmeye yönelik
bu konulardaki düşüncelerini dile getirirler; örneğin mülteciler ve uluslararası terörizm sorununun
nasıl çözülebileceği üzerine. Birlikte bu sorunların kaynaklarını bulmaya yönelik saatlerce süren
müzakereler, gerçek bir BM müzakeresi formatında devam ederken, birbirleri hakkında çok şey
öğreniyorlar. Buldukları çözümlere yönelik tutku dolu konuşmalar verirken, başka elçilerin
argümanları içerisinde eksiklikler bulmaya çalışıyorlar ve tüm bu müzakereleri BM’nin ‘Parlimanter
Prosedürler’ine uygun olarak yaparak temsil edilen ulusları ikna etmeye ve çözümlerine oy verip
vermemeye yönelik çalışmalarını devam ettiriyorlar. Temsil ettikleri ülkeler hakkında bilgi edinirken,
küresel meseleler ve BM hakkında, aynı zamanda kişisel görüşlerini kendi temsiliyet politikalarından
uzak tutmayı öğreniyorlar. Fakat en önemlisi, konferansta geçirdikleri o birkaç günde, olgun birer elçi
olarak dünyanın çeşitli ülkelerinden başka elçilerle arkadaşlıklar kuruyorlar. MUN konferansları
öğrencilere gerçekten unutulmayacak bir deneyim kazandırmakta, önemli ve özel birşeyin parçası
olma hissini yaşatırken, aynı zamanda çok eğlenceli bir anı olarak da hafızalarında iz bırakıyor.
Konferans 8 öğrenci tarafından organize edildi; MUN 2015 ekibi: Tolga Atun, Kaan Ibrahim, Cecilie
Neilson, Holly Cartwright, Noah Swanson, Bilge Nevzat, Tumen Dambiev ve Kayra Şadi’den
oluştu. ESK öğrencileri her bir dört komiteye ‘Başkanlık’ etti. Tolga Atun’un Genel Sekreter olduğu
konferansta, Bilge Nevzat Genel Kurul Başkanı olarak görev aldı. Teknik ekip ve fotoğrafçılar yine ESK
öğrencilerinden oluştu. İdari ekipte yaklaşık olarak 25 ESK öğrencisi görev aldı. MUN Ekibi
Turkcell’den almış oldukları sponsörlük ile kendi internet sitelerini kurdular: www.mun-ky.com.
Cuma akşamı Bella View Hotel’de gerçekleşen sosyal etkinlik sonucunda başka okullardan gelen
öğrencilerle, resmi olmayan bir ortamda sosyalleşme ve daha yakınen tanışma olanağı bulundu.
Cumartesi günü komiteler müzakereler gerçekleştirdiler, daha sonra Genel Kurul’da biraraya gelerek
çözümler üzerinde tartışarak hangi çözümlerin geçerli oy alıp almayacağı üzerine karar verdiler.
Açılış töreninde yaptığı konuşma sırasında MUN Direktörü Aşkgül Suman elçilere 2015 yılının
Birleşmiş Milletler’in kuruluşunun 70. Yılı olduğunu hatırlatarak, Genel Sekreter Ban Ki Moon’un bu
yıldönümünün kolektif çözümler üzerine gücümüzü artırmanın, barış ve güvenliliği artırma yönünde
çalışmalara hız vermenin, sürdürülebilir gelişme ve insan haklarının öneminin altını çizmişti; tüm bu
fikirler konferans sırasında tartışılan konular arasındaydı.
MUN organizatörleri, Firat Kandamish ve Zeki Murad tüm okullardan gelen öğrencilerin konferansa
yönelik yaptıkları hazırlıklar karşısında gurur duyduklarını belirttiler. “Pek çok elçi MUN’a yeni
olmasına rağmen, umarız ki MUN ile bağlantılı becerilerini geliştirmek yanında, ki bunlar arasında
araştırma, özgüven, topluluk önünde konuşma ve uzlaşma sayılabilir, birlikte çalışmayı da öğrendiler.

The founder of the Turkish Republic, great leader Mustafa Kemal Atatürk was commemorated on his
77th death anniversary during a special ceremony organised by the ESK Primary section.
The ceremony which started with a minute of silence and the singing of the national anthem continued Year 6 students McKenzie Freeland and Olgu Şimşir delivering a speech on the importance of the
day. The ceremony ended with Year 5 students Serva Doğan, Toprak Özerden and Naz Sözeri reading
the poem titled "10 KASIM" (10th of November).

delivered a speech marking the importance of the day. Also Year 4 students Ece Tulumbacı, Kani
Akyıllar and Dilem Nat recited the poem titled "15 KASIM" (15 th November) and won the recognition of
all who were listening.

Bicommunal Innovation Camp – 9 October 2015

On Friday 9th October, Margaret and I took 24 students to the University of Nicosia for an entrepreneurial competition. 50 students from the south of Cyprus and 50 students from the north of Cyprus
participated. Their business task was to come up with a way to increase Tourism for Cyprus. All students took an active role, presented to a panel of judges and were on the go for 12 hours.
Out of 100 participants, the winning teams all had an ESK representative.
1ST PLACE– Team consisted of: Tolga Atun (ESK),
Prize: 10 days in Athens next summer – all expenses paid
2nd PLACE – Team consisted of: Kayra Sadi (ESK),

İkitoplumlu İnnovasyon Kampı – 9 Ekim 2015

9 Ekim, Cuma günü, Margaret ile birlikte 24 öğrenciyi girişim ile ilgili bir yarışmaya katılmak üzere University of Nicosia’ya götürdük. Yarışmaya kuzeyden 50 öğrenci, güneyden 50 öğrenci olmak üzere toplam 100 öğrenci katıldı. Takımlara verilen işletme görevi Kıbrıs Turizmi’ni artıracak bir proje tasarlamaktı. Tüm öğrenciler neredeyse 12 saat süren sürecin tüm aşamalarında aktif bir görev üstlendiler,
uzmanlardan oluşan bir panele sunumlar yaptılar.
100 katılımcı arasında, kazanan tüm takımlarda bir
ESK temsilcisi bulunmaktaydı.

Kuzey Kıbrıs Türk Cumhuriyeti’nin 32. kuruluş yıl dönümü okulumuzda 16 Kasım, Pazartesi günü okulumuzun tüm öğrenci ve öğretmenlerinin katılımıyla, oldukça coşkulu bir törenle kutlandı.
Tören saygı duruşu ve ardından İstiklal Marşı eşliğinde bayrakların göndere çekilmesiyle başladı.
Günün anlam ve öneminin belirtildiği öğretmen konuşması ve sonrasında Kıbrıs, özgürlük ve barış ile
ilgili okunan şiirlerin ardından öğrencilerimizin Kıbrıs ağzı ile mâni atışmaları da izleyiciden büyük
beğeni alıp alkışla ödüllendirildi. Okulumuz müzik grubunun çalıp söylediği eğlenceli ve hareketli
Kıbrıs şarkıları tüm öğrenci ve öğretmenlerimizin bu coşkuya eşlik etmelerini sağladı. Programın sonunda 9. sınıftan bir grup kız öğrencimizin oynadıkları Kıbrıs halk dansları ve sonrasında da tüm izleyicilere “barış”ı simgeleyen zeytin dalları dağıtmaları, izleyicilere renkli anlar yaşattı.
Tören, 12. sınıf öğrencilerimizin hazırladıkları Eski Kıbrıs Fotoğrafları, Kıbrıs’a özgü canlılar, geleneksel
Kıbrıs yemekleri, kıyafetleri gibi özellikleri içeren sunu müzik eşliğinde izlendi.
Törene katkı sağlayan ve oldukça başarılı gösteriler sunan tüm öğrencilerimi buradan bir kez daha
tebrik ediyorum.

15th November TRNC National Republic Holiday was celebrated at ESK

The Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus’s 32nd year of Independence Day was celebrated with a joyful ceremony by all our students and teachers on Monday, 16th November.
The ceremony started with a minute of silence followed by the flags being raised and the national anthem being sung.
After the speeches delivered by the Turkish teachers on the meaning and importance of the day, poems were recited by students on peace, freedom and Cyprus. Our students then recited folkloric verses of poetry using the Cypriot dialect earning a large round of applause from the audience. Soon, students and teachers joined in with the lively Cypriot songs which were sang and performed by our
school’s music band. A group of our female Y9 students performed a Cypriot folk dance and as a symbol of peace, olive branches were offered to members of the audience in traditional wicker baskets.
The ceremony was enjoyed with a presentation put together by our Y12 students and involved photos
of old Cyprus, creatures of Cyprus, traditional Cypriot food, clothes and more, all accompanied by
background music.
We would like to congratulate all who put effort into preparing this ceremony and our students who
performed so well.

The Tempest – An Atmospheric Outdoor Triumph - 11, 12 & 13 November

Audiences were delighted to a spectacular treat at the recent production
of William Shakespeare’s ‘The Tempest’, performed by students from the
English School of Kyrenia’s Secondary School Drama Department.
The talented young cast captivated their audiences by skilfully weaving
the magical tale of power and deceit, fairies, monsters, avenging wrongs
and true love conquering all. All this was achieved whilst tackling the original English script by Shakespeare. Afterwards Turkish speaking viewers
praised the quality of the performances, which allowed them to engage
with the characters in the story regardless of the language.
Stand out performances came from Daniel Todd, playing the sorcerer
Prospero, Azra Say-Ötün playing his daughter Miranda and Hazal SayÖtün as the monster Caliban. Yasmin Avdji, Leah Swanson and Fulya
Aköz bewitched as the trimuti inspired spirit Ariel, clothed in white tunics and LEDs to become beings
of light; whilst Zeynep Todd as Stephana and Ami Gardiner as Trinculo brought comic turns to the
show that were perfectly timed.
They were ably assisted by the rest of cast who all put in exceptional effort and showed real focus and
dedication on stage.
The magical atmosphere was reinforced further with excellent lighting and sound effects, created by
Noah Swanson and his fellow student Şevket Shevket. Costumes that brought the spirit world into the
fore were designed by IB student Ayla Say and made by Gülsen Dünki, whilst the make-up was designed and produced by A Level student Beran Özel.
The directors, Charlie Inskip, Oya Akın and Dot Feszczat, speak for the whole staff of the school by
saying “We are exceptionally proud of the cast for all they achieved.” Performances took place at the
ESK outdoor Amphitheatre on Wednesday 11th, Thursday 12th and Friday 13th November 2015.

Fırtına – Atmosferik bir Dış Mekan Başarısı - 11, 12 ve 13 Kasım 2015

Geçtiğimiz haftalarda The English School of Kyrenia (ESK) Ortaokul - Lise
Drama öğrencileri tarafından sahnelenen William Shakespeare’e ait
‘Fırtına’ (The Tempest) oyunu seyirciler için gerçek bir görsel şölen sundu.
Yetenekli ve genç oyuncu kadrosu, periler, yaratıklar, güç ve hilekarlık dolu,
intikamı alınan yanlışlıklar ile gerçek aşkın herzaman kazandığı bu büyülü
hikayeyi nakış işlercesine başarılı bir şekilde sahneye koyarak seyircileri
etkilediler. Üstelik bunu, Shakespeare tarafından yazılan orijinal İngilizce
oyun metni ile başardılar. Oyun sonrasında performansların kalitesini öven izleyiciler, dilin ötesinde bir
anlatımla hikayedeki karakterlerle haşır neşir olmalarını sağladıkları için oyuncuları kutladılar.
Övgüye layık performanslar arasında büyücü Prospero rolündeki Daniel Todd, Prospero’nun kızı Miranda’yı oynayan Azra Say-Ötun ve yaratık Caliban’ı oynayan Hazal Say-Ötun’den sözetmek mümkün. Yasmin Avdji, Leah Swanson ve Fulya Aköz tarafından hayat bulan büyülenmiş uçarı ruh Ariel, beyaz
kostümleri ve kostümlerine sarılan LED ışıklarla nurdan canlılara dönüştüler; bu arada Stephana
rolündeki Zeynep Todd ve Trincula rolündeki Ami Gardiner ise mükemmel zamanlamaları ile oyundaki
komik anları oluşturdular.

Büyülü atmosfer Noah Swanson ve yine öğrenci olan arkadaşı olan Şevket Shevket tarafından
yaratılan mükemmel ışık ve ses efektleri ile tamamlandı. Ruhlar dünyasını hayata getiren kostümler
IB öğrencisi Ayla Say tarafından tasarlanıp Gülsen Dünki tarafından hazırlanırken, tüm makyaj
tasarımları ve uygulamaları ise A Level öğrencisi Beran Özel tarafından yapıldı.
Yönetmenler, Charlie Inskip, Oya Akın ve Dot Feszczat, okul adına konuşarak “Oyuncularımızın
göstermiş oldukları başarı karşısında gururluyuz” dediler. Performanslar 11, 12 ve 13 Kasım 2015
tarihlerinde ESK okul kampüsü içerisinde bulunan açıkhava Amfitiyatrosunda gerçekleşmişti.

Secondary Art Department News – 10 December 2015

In Art, in the last few weeks of November we had three artists’ workshops from a visiting Iranian artist
called Asef Ebrahimin. He is the same artist who came to the school to paint the wonderful mural outside in the car park next to the boarding house. Year 12 helped him paint part of the mural and used
his work to inspire their own abstract pieces. The artist also held workshops with Year 12, painting
landscapes and abstract seascapes and with Year 10, painting portraits using acrylic and oil paint.
The students really enjoyed working with the artist and learnt some new techniques and ideas for how
to work quickly with a range of different artistic styles.
Ortaokul-Lise Resim Bölümü Haberleri – 10 Aralık 2015

Resim bölümü bünyesinde ve Kasım ayının son birkaç haftası süresince Asef Ebrahimin adlı İranlı ressam liderliğinde üç tane resim atölyesi gerçekleştirilmiştir. Bu okulumuzu ziyaret eden ve bording evi
yanındaki otoparkın dışındaki muhteşem duvar resmini yapan ressamın ta kendisi. 12. Sınıf öğrencilerimiz duvar resminin bir bölümünü boyamasına yardımcı olurken, ressamın çalışmalarını esin
kaynağı olarak kullanarak kendi soyut parçalarını yarattılar. 10. Sınıflarla da atölye çalışması
gerçekleştiren ressam, onlarla manzara ve soyut deniz resimleri, akrilik ve yağlıboya kullanarak portreler üzerine çalıştı. Öğrenciler ressamla birlikte çalışmaktan büyük bir keyif aldılar, bu arada çok
çeşitli farklı resim stilleri üzerine hızlıca çalışabilmek için yeni teknikler ve fikirler edindiler.

Y5 Science WOW Day – 11 December 2015

Year 5 arrived at school ready for a day of secret agent training. They had a message from our leader
– Mrs Green, advising them to prepare to destroy the enemy at any costs, using their knowledge of
light. The agents then completed a round robin of missions in each classroom. In Agent Dow’s class
children looked at angles of reflections; in Agent Dix’s class children had to consider how they would
write up a secret message, using reflection, refraction, and use of colours; in Agent Manjoo’s class
children thought carefully about how they can see on different levels and around corners and made
periscopes and in Agent Allan’s class children experimented with how light travels and reflections.
Through our hard work we managed to defeat the enemy and restore order at ESK. A great day was
had by all.
5. Sınıfların Harika Fen Günü– 11 Aralık 2015

5. Sınıflar okula, günü gizli ajan eğitimi alarak geçirmeye hazır geldiler. Kendilerine liderimiz Mrs
Green’den bir mesaj bırakılmıştı; mesajda ne pahasına olursa olsun, ışık ile ilgili öğrendiklerini kullanarak, düşmanı yok etmelerini söylemişti. Ajanlar daha sonra onları hazır bekleyen görevleri tamamlamak üzere her sınıfta belirli bir süre zaman geçirdiler, Ajan Dow’ın sınıfında çocuklar yansımaların
açılarına baktılar; Ajan Dix’in sınıfında yansıma, kırılma, ve renkler kullanarak nasıl gizli bir mesaj
yazabileceklerini araştırdılar; Ajan Manjoo’ün sınıfında çocuklar farklı seviyeleri ve köşelerin ardını
nasıl görebilecekleri üzerine dikkatlice düşünerek periskoplar inşa ettiler; Ajan Allen’ın sınıfında ise
çocuklar ışığın nasıl seyahat ettiği ve yansımalarla ilgili deneyler yaptılar. Zorlu mücadelelerimizi
başarı ile sonlandırıp düşmanı yenerek ESK’daki düzeni yeniden sağlamaya yardımcı olduk. Bu herkes
için harika bir gün oldu.

Y2 ‘Lights Out, Night’s Out’ Performance – 9 & 10 December 2015

The Year 2 children took their audience on a nighttime safari to see the world through the eyes of
clever nocturnal critters ranging from hedgehogs and jaguars to owls and fireflies. The campers and
sleepers told the story of the holographic book ‘Lights Out, Night’s Out’ by William Boniface. The
performance had a wide range of songs and dances which the children enjoyed learning and
performing. Well done Year 2!

2. Sınıf çocukları seyircilerini bir gece safarisine çıkartarak, onlara kirpilerden jaguarlara,
baykuşlardan ateşböceklerine kadar çeşitlilik gösteren çok zeki gececil hayvanların gözlerinden
dünyayı gösterdiler. William Boniface’e ait ‘Lights Out Night’s Out’ adlı holografik kitabın hikayesini
bize kampçılar ile uykucular anlattılar. Çok çeşitli türlerde şarkılar ve danslar barındıran gösteriyi
hazırlayıp sunarken çocuklar çok eğlendiler. Aferin size 2. Sınıflar!

KUŞKOR Visit Year 4 - 30 November 2015
KUŞKOR visited ESK to talk to Year 4 about the birds that can be seen on campus. Due to bad
weather the outdoor activity was cut short but the children had plenty of questions for KUŞKOR
volunteers Robin Snape and Damla Beton.

Year 7 Leadership Course - 2 October 2015

ESK is delighted to introduce a new course in year 7 called “Leadership”. As it is a new course, we
wanted to give you an overview of what we are trying to achieve with this course.
The challenge facing schools today is how best to prepare our students for the realities of living and
competing in a global workplace. The pace and variety of this global economy calls on educators to
enhance our curriculum to ensure that our students are ready to play their part in this exciting future.
There is a growing body of research highlighting how character traits and leadership skills are directly
linked to being able to flourish at school and in the workplace. Therefore we want our curriculum to
explicitly include character and leadership education and provide the opportunity for students to develop a variety of behaviours and learn a range of skills if they are to be properly armed for the lifechallenges they will face.
If they are to continue to 'push the world forward' your sons and daughters will need to demonstrate
perseverance, resilience, courage, self-esteem, honesty, humour, optimism, trust, loyalty, integrity,
enterprise... the list goes on. The crucial point is that these behaviours don’t appear automatically or
through inheritance; they can and must be taught, modelled and encouraged.
TFL Education in England, has helped ESK create a series of courses for inclusion in the secondary
school curriculum. TFL Education has secured the endorsement of the Royal Chartered Management
Institute (CMI) in London.
At the end of the course in June, students have the chance to receive a certificate, endorsed by the
CMI, as recognition of their achievements in a unique course.
The Year 7 students are studying Module A of this course. To give you an overview of the kind of

Year 5 Karpaz Residential Trips - 12-14 & 14-16 October 2015

Year 5 headed to Karpaz to take part in a 3-day, 2-night residential. The focus of the residential was
science, focussing on growing plants, seed dispersal and identification of different parts of plants. In
addition to this children worked on their social and teamwork skills and were tested physically by undertaking a mountain walk, which everyone managed to complete! Children were treated to a campfire and camp songs on the beach on their first night and were shocked at how clearly they could see
the stars in the night sky. The sound of the waves combined with the sight of the flames of the campfire made for a truly great experience for all. The children thoroughly enjoyed working with Hasan on
his vegetable patch, planting and harvesting vegetables, even eating some of them for our dinner.
Children were treated to some beach time where sand sculptures were created and in small groups
children splashed in the sea, relishing getting their teachers soaking wet! On our last night children
wowed the audience with their many talents at the talent show, followed by a disco. All children represented ESK well and displayed wonderful manners throughout our stay.
A massive thank you goes to Hasan and all of his staff at Balci Plaza for all of their help and assistance. Well done Year 5!

5. Sınıf Konaklamalı Karpaz Gezisi - 12-14 ve 14-16 Ekim 2015

5. Sınıflar 3 gün, 2 gece geçirecekleri konaklamalı gezileri için Karpaz’a doğru yol aldılar. Bu yılki konaklamalı gezinin odağı fen bilimleriydi; bitki yetiştirmek, tohum dağıtımı ve bitkileri oluşturan farklı
bölümlerin tanımlanması. Bunlara ek olarak çocuklar sosyal ve takımdaşlık becerilerini geliştirme
olanağı bularak herkesin nihayetinde tamamlamayı başardığı bir dağ yürüyüşü sırasında fiziksel
olarak da sınandılar! Çocuklar ilk gecelerinde sahilde hazırlanan bir kamp ateşi etrafında söylenen
kamp şarkılarıyla ödüllendirildiler; tümü de geceleyin gökyüzünde parlayan yıldızları ne kadar temiz
görebildiklerine şaşırdılar. Kamp ateşimizin alevleriyle bütünleşen dalga sesleri ilk geceyi herkes için
unutulmaz bir deneyim kıldı. Çocuklar sebze bahçesinde Hasan ile birlikte çalışmaktan büyü bir keyif
aldılar; sebzeler ektiler ve topladılar, hatta bazılarını akşam yemeklerinde yediler. Çocuklara daha
sonra ödül olarak sahilde kumdan heykeller yapabilecekleri ve küçük gruplar halinde denize girip
oynayabilecekleri, öğretmenlerini sırılsıklam ıslatabilecekleri biraz serbest zaman verildi. Son gecemizde düzenlenen yetenek gösterisi sırasında çocuklar pek çok farklı yetenekleri için seyircilerini
büyülediler; yetenek gösterisini disko takip etti. Çocukların tümü de konaklamalı gezimiz sırasında
sergiledikleri olağanüstü terbiye ile ESK’yı mükemmel bir şekilde temsil ettiler.
Hasan’a ve tüm Balcı Plaza personeline konaklamalı gezimiz sırasında göstermiş oldukları misafirperverlik ve destek için teşekkür ediyoruz. Aferin size 5. Sınıflar!

Y4 Amazing Egyptians – 24 & 25 November 2015

After weeks of learning lines, practising songs, getting costumes organised and perfecting their acting
skills on stage, the Year 4 production of ‘The Amazing Egyptians’ was ready to perform. When the
parents arrived on Tuesday and Wednesday afternoon to watch the show, all the Pharaohs, belly
dancers, slaves, mummies, Gods and Goddesses and archaeologists were dressed, lined up and
ready to do their best performances ever. They certainly did! Beginning on the banks of the Nile, the
Pharaohs performed admirably followed by some dazzling dancing from the belly dancers and a very
dramatic end to poor King Tut. The slaves staggered on stage clearly suffering from the heat and
exhaustion from all that pyramid building, followed closely by the hardworking archaeologists but still
they all managed a fantastic performance of ‘We Built this City’. Next were the mummies and more
archaeologists, who did some exploring down the aisles much to the amusement of the audience,
before heading to the stage. Everyone joined in for a great rendition of ‘Night Boat to Cairo’ and the
mummies danced their socks off to ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’. With the whole cast on stage for the song
Tutankhamun and Amazing Egyptians, they wowed everyone with their stage presence and fabulous
singing. All the hard work certainly paid off & the show was a great success. Year 4 really were ‘The
AMAZING Egyptians’.

Sınıfların ‘Muhteşem Mısırlılar’ Gösterisi – 24 ve 25 Kasım 2015

Haftalar süren replik ezberleme, şarkıları çalışma, kostümleri hazırlama ve sahne üzerindeki
oyunculuk becerilerini mükemmelleştirme sonrasında, 4. Sınıfların ‘Muhteşem Mısırlıları’ gösterisi
sahnelenmeye hazırdı. Salı ve Çarşamba günü aileler gösterimizi izlemeye geldiklerinde, tüm
Firavunlar, dansözler, köleler, mumyalar, Tanrılar ve Tanrıçalar ile arkeologlar sıralanmış ve ellerinden
gelen en iyi gösteriyi yapmaya hazırdılar. Gerçekten de öyle yaptılar! Nil’in kıyılarında başlayan
gösteride, Firavunların harika performansını takip eden dansözlerin gözalıcı dansları, zavallı Kral
Tut’ın dramatik ölümü ile son buldu. Arkeologlarla birlikte, sıcaktan ve yorgunluktan sahneye zar zor
çıkan piramit köleleri tüm yorgunluklarına rağmen ‘We Built this City’ adlı performanslarını harika bir
şekilde sahnelediler. Onların ardından sahneyi mumyalar ve sahneye çıkmadan çnce salondaki
seyircilerin etrafını meraklı bir şekilde dolaşarak keşfeden başka arkeologlar doldurdu. ‘Night Boat to
Cairo’ parçasının bu yepyeni yorumuna herkes eşlik etti; ardından mumyalar ‘Walk Like an Egyptian’
şarkısına çılgınca dans ettiler. Tüm oyunuların Tutankhamun ve Amazing Egyptians şarkıları için
sahnede toplanmaları sonrasında, seyircilerini sahne bilinçleri ve mükemmel şarkılarıyla büyülediler.
Haftalar süren yoğun çalışmamızın karşılığını aldık ve gösteri gerçek bir başarı oldu. 4. Sınıflar, sizler
gerçekten ‘MUHTEŞEM Mısırlılar’sınız.

Y1 ‘A Toy Story’ Performance - 15 & 16 December 2015

The Year 1 pupils entertained us all with the charming performance of the Toy Story. As Grandad told
the story to two tired children at bedtime, the toys came to life. Climbing out of the toy box they
danced and sang until they were ordered back into the box by the Teddy who kept things carefully under control. A truly delightful end to the term.

Büyükbaba, iki yorgun torununa uyku saati masallarını anlatırken, tüm oyuncaklar canlandı. Oyuncak
kutularından dışarıya çıkarak dans edip şarkılar söylediler, ta ki her şeyi dikkatlice kontrol altında tutan ayıcık tarafından oyuncak kutularına geri gitmeleri söylenene kadar. Bu gösteri ile döneme
gerçekten tatlı bir son vermiş olduk.

Y8 Tell Y6 about ‘Coasts’ - 4 November 2015

Only a few weeks into starting teaching the Y8 Geography course, I was very pleasantly surprised by
the high standards of work that the students had produced. They were given the task of creating a
story book based on the topic of coastal erosion. To my amazement, each student has created
beautifully illustrated and written, imaginative stories explaining relatively challenging concepts such
as ‘abrasion’ and ‘hydraulic action’. After collecting their work I knew that their hardwork should be
shared with others and celebrated. When I approached Mrs Avdji, telling her how I would love our Y8s
to take their books to the primary students and have a one-to-one book reading she was amazingly
helpful and organised time with Y6s. They had just come back from their residential trip to Karpaz
and had been learning similar concepts in relation to coasts so it was a perfect match! It was great to
see the older students introducing themselves to the younger ones and reading the books they
themselves had created. I was very proud to observe their positive interactions and see how we were
able to build links between the primary and secondary schools at the ESK. This experience would not
have been possible if it was not for Mrs Avdji helping coordinate the time with the primary school’s
teachers and Mr Akosman who has assisted with all the Y8 students. The Y6 students have been very
welcoming. Many of them were so curious and asked several questions to find out more about the
coastal erosion.
A special thanks and congratulations to my Y8 Geography students for their brilliant work and their
kindness and generosity with the Y6s!’

Bu yıl, Ulu Önder Gazi Mustafa Kemal ATATÜRK’ÜN aramızdan ayrılışının
76. yılı idi ve bunun için okulumuzda, öğrencilerimiz okudukları yazılar,
şiirler; sunular, özdeyişler ve ATATÜRK’e ithafen gerçekleştirdikleri piyano
resitali ile anlamlı bir törene daha imzalarını attılar.
Okulumuzun Türkçe ve Müzik Bölümü öğretmenlerinin hazırladıkları 10
Kasım Atatürk’ü anma programı, 10 Kasım Salı günü gerçekleştirildi.
Türkiye Cumhuriyeti’nin Kurucusu, Ulu Önder Gazi Mustafa Kemal
ATATÜRK’ÜN aramızdan ayrılışının 76. yılı anma programı, saat: 09.05’te,
tüm okulca gerçekleştirilen saygı duruşu ve İstiklal Marşı’nın okunmasıyla
başlamıştır. Okul Direktörümüz Mr. MacDonald’ın Atatürk’ü büyük bir
takdir ile andığı ve Dünya Lideri olduğunu belirten konuşması herkes
tarafından oldukça dikkat içerisinde ve takdir ile dinlenmiştir. Daha sonra
Atatürk’ün dünya lideri olmasını sağlayan özellikleri ile onun en başta Türk
milleti daha sonra da ezilen tüm uluslar için ne denli büyük önem
taşıdığının belirtildiği öğretmen ve öğrenci konuşmaları ile anma programı
devam etmiştir. Ulu Önder’in Hayatı ve Fikirleri ile ilgili öğrencilerimizin
hazırladıkları sunumun ardından kendisine duyulan sevgiyi dile getiren şiirlerin seslendirilmesi de
dinleyicilere oldukça duygulu dakikalar yaşatmıştır. Öğrencilerimizden bazıları, Atatürk’ün özgürlük,
barışseverlik, dostluk ve çağdaşlık ile ilgili özdeyişlerini okumuşlardır. Programın sonunda da
Atatürk’e ithafen öğrencilerimizin gerçekleitirdikleri klasik müzik resitali büyük beğeni kazanmıştır.
Atatürk için hazırlanan anma törenini okul idarecilerimiz, öğretmenlerimiz ve öğrencilerimiz dikkatle;
büyük bir saygı ve sevgi çemberi içerisinde dinleyip izlemişlerdir.

CAS/SECA Update

Our very talented Vedat and Benan took part The Buffer Fringe Performing Arts workshops with Ms.
Akın, which was organised by Home for Cooperation. It was held on Saturday, 10th October. The
theme of the performance was based on the idea “Performing Urban Memory” where the artists
create a dynamic route in which the difference between the audience and themselves are blurred
through theatre, audio visual installations and contemporary dance.
On Wednesday 28th October Ayla Rose Say made her first public guest performance at Karmi Church
where she wowed the audience with her amazing voice, singing Webber’s Think of Me from Phantom
Of The Opera. The event which was headlined by the world recognised
soprano, Laden Ince, was organised in aid of the restoration of the chapel in the Karmi Cemetery. To date, Ayla has been taking vocal lessons
from the talented soprano, who has had an audible effect on her voice.
We look forward the next performance…
Vlada and Ayla have been involved in in the opening events of the Civic
Space Project in North Nicosia. The organisation, which is an EU funded under the Aid Programme for the Turkish Cypriot community aims to
empower and promote civic engagement for a better Cyprus provide
training on subjects such as communication, fundraising, financial management and sustainability, networking and advocacy, human rights
based approaches and environmental responsibility. An inauguration
event was held on Friday 5th December at the Civic Space premises, with a graffiti performance by
the artist, Naz Atun, a Forum Theatre by our drama teacher Oya Akın and Polly Flourentzou and with
live jazz music by the bi-communal Music Group “Trio”.

CAS/SECA Update
Vedat, Cecilie, Poppy and Celine all helped out at Kyrenia Animal
Rescue’s Christmas Bazaar on Saturday 5th December. Their main
aim of the day was to find suitable homes for the pups that are
currently at the shelter. (The two of the dogs now have homes due
to our students walking around with them at the event.) Holly, who
was also at the bazaar did her yearly duty of being Santa’s Amazing
Elf. They all did an excellent job!
Vlada and Anar have been working alongside Ms Simmons and Mr. Mcgrath with the little ones in our
foundation classes as Russian translators and teacher assistants. Could this open a door to a future
career in education perhaps?!

Today we went out in search of what we could give Mondi for breakfast.
For those of you who don’t know, Mondi is the hen in the story Handa’s
Hen (NK’s story focus of the term).
As you can see from the photos Mondi enjoyed a varied and filling breakfast.

Nursery Mini Explorers – 19 November 2015
Today, it was NC’s turn to explore outside.
Poor Elmer (NC’s story focus) could not find any berry juice to hide his colours to make him grey like
the other elephants. The children’s task was to create a mixture from natural materials so Elmer
could use this to paint over his colours. They tested out their mixtures by pretending the tree trunks
were Elmer’s legs.
This afternoon we plan to use the mixtures to paint over a picture of Elmer to see if it really works.
We will be out every week so if you see a blur of red pass you then ask us what we are doing, we are
eager to share!

Swimming in ESK took place for the first 10 weeks of school; the best swimmers were invited to
Swimming Academy every Monday and Wednesday morning. We had massive improvement during
this period with some children improving their times by over 6 seconds. All of ESK’s top performers
then fought it out at ESK’s annual Swimming Gala. The winning swimmers were Doruk Şah, Serra
Soydan, Mert Türsoy, Rüzgar Maneoğlu, Mckenzie Freeland, Bahar Şan, Ella Özikiz, Yasem Karaca,
Hana Omer and Trinity Taylor-Burroughs.
Tennis lessons at ESK happen for the first 8 weeks of
school where students develop skills including serving, forehands, backhands and volleys. The top players from each year group are selected to play in the
annual Tennis Tournament. The talented students
from years 5-9 played a knockout tournament, which
culminated in one winner from Year 5 and 6, which
was Eliz Dilaver, and one winner from Years 7 – 9
which was Derin Akay. The top players all commit to
tennis outside ESK School at least 3 times a week
and will surely win more tournaments internationally
in the future.
We had an exciting landmark for ESK and North Cyprus this year as 27 students completed their
Bronze Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Mr Todd, the British High Commissioner of Cyprus,
presented them with their certificates. The Duke of Edinburgh International Award involves volunteer
work, skill development, physical activity and adventurous journey. Many of the students have now
entered themselves for the Silver award, which will be take place during 2015/16.

Hard work and excellent teamwork from Mr Morris,
Miss Erüreten, Mr Stuart and Mr Reece have been
able to set up the Silver Duke of Edinburgh International Award. Part of the awards involves a 3 day, 30
kilometre expedition. 27 students took on the challenge and managed to use every last bit of resolve to
pull their teams together and complete it. The students camped for 2 nights near Bufavento castle after their mountain walk and managed to overcome
poor weather conditions to light fires and cook their
own food.
ESK’ Lower Secondary Girls Football team have been very competitive all season with some very
close games but they managed to win their first game when Mr Morris’ extra training and dedication
paid off. Fikriye Bağseverler scored 2 goals in that game as she became ‘man of the match’ but the
rest of the team played exceptionally well too.
ESK’s Primary Boys Football team won 3 games in their league and progressed to the finals. Our
teams at ESK are steadily improving and the extra training is really paying off. Thank you to all the
players and Mr Aktansoy for his coaching skills.
ESK hosted a sport residential on the weekend of the
6th December with teams from Istanbul and Ankara
taking part. After ta full day of sports the teams slept
in school after watching a movie and having a disco.
All our teams played well and developed skills of teamwork and sportsmanship. Our girls team won the basketball and football tournaments and really represented the school well with their attitude and determination.

Atatürk Kompozisyon Yarışması - 11 Kasım 2015

Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı ile Telsim Vodafone işbirliğinde, 09-13
Kasım Atatürk Haftası kapsamında, 6’ncısı düzenlenen ve bu yıl
için belirlenen "Atatürk'ün sanata ve sanatçıya verdiği değer"
konulu, ortaokul ve liseler arası kompozisyon yarışmasında dereceye giren öğrencilere, Milli Eğitim Bakanı Kemal Dürüst tarafından 11 Kasım 2015 tarihinde Lefkoşa’da Milli Eğitim Bakanlığı’nda düzenlenen törenle ödülleri verilmiştir.
Yarışma sonucunda; ortaokullarda okulumuz 7. Sınıf öğrencimiz
İlhan Yeniada “Atatürk’le Sanat” adlı kompozisyonuyla; liselerde
de 10. Sınıf öğrencimiz Darem Kadiroğulları “Yaşıyoruz” adlı
kompozisyonuyla üçüncülük ödülüne layık görülmüşlerdir.
Bu yarışmalarda 5 yıl boyunca dereceye girenlerin kompozisyonlarının MEB ve KKTC Telsim tarafından kitap haline getirilerek
hem eserlerin kalıcılığının sağlanacağı hem de diğer öğrencilerin
yarışmalara katılmaları için motive edilmek istenildiği yetkililerce
önemle belirtilmiştir.
Milli Eğitim Bakanı, ödül alan öğrencilere ve bu öğrencilerin öğretmenleri ile okul müdürlerine de başarı sertifikalarını verip kendilerini kutlamıştır.
Bizler de ödül alan öğrencilerimizi ve ailelerini tebrik ediyor,
öğrencilerimizin başarılarını diliyoruz.

Ataturk Composition Competition - 11 November 2015

Students who reached the finals of the composition competition, organised by the Ministry of Education and Telsim in honour of Ataturk Week, received their awards from the Minister of Education
Kemal Dürüst on the 11th of November
2015. The ceremony took place in Nicosia at the
Ministry of Education.
Competition results: in the middle school category
our Y7 Student İlhan Yeniada, with his composition titled “Art with Ataturk”; and in the high school
category ESK Y10 student Darem Kadıroğulları, with her composition titled “We are living”, both
achieved third place awards.
In the past 5 years, the winning compositions have been published as books by the Ministry of Education and TRNC Telsim in order to make sure these works remain permanent and to motivate and inspire other students to enter these competitions.
The Minister of Education presented certificates to all the award-winning students, along with their
teachers and school’s head teachers.
We congratulate all the award winning students as well as their families.

Y4&5 Pantomime Trip – 26 & 27 November 2015

Year 4 & 5 were in for a treat when they were invited to attend the RBL Theatre Players’ production of
Ali Baba & the Forty Thieves on the 26th and 27th November. The two year groups set off to Chateau
Lambousa with their packed lunches on board ready for a fun packed morning of entertainment. We
arrived to find other schools from the area in the audience as well and everyone was buzzing with anticipation. The curtain went up and we were treated with all the pantomime delights you’d expect,
‘He’s behind you’… ‘Oh yes he is… Oh no he isn’t!’ and a tremendous amount of audience participation with booing the baddies as they appeared on the stage. After a brief interval where the children
devoured their snacks, it was straight into Act 2 with more of the same along with some rousing choruses. After the finale, the cast came down off the stage and made a line up so that the children
could meet them and shake hands. Some even got an autograph or two. It was then across to the
market area for lunch and everybody back on the bus! A great day was had by all.

4. ve 5. Sınıf öğrencileri 26 ve 27 Kasım tarihlerinde gerçekleşen ve RBL Tiyatro Oyuncuları
prodüksiyonu olan ‘Ali Baba ve Kırk Haramiler’ pandomimine gitmek üzere davet aldıkları için çok
şanslıydılar. İki yaş grubu da yanlarında paketlenmiş öğle yemekleri ile birlikte okul otobüslerine doluşup sabahı eğlenceyle geçirecekleri Chateau Lambousa’ya doğru yola çıktılar. Vardığımızda bölgedeki başka okullardan gelen öğrencileri de bizler kadar heyecanlı bir bekleyiş içinde bulduk. Perde açıldı
ve geleneksel İngiliz pandomiminden bekleyebileceğimiz, ‘İşte arkanda duruyor…’ ‘Hayır durmuyor…
Evet duruyor!’ ve kötü karakterlerin sahneye çıkmasıyla yükselen “yuuu”lamalar gibi seyirci-oyuncu
iletişimini yüksek tutan neşeli bir oyun izledik. Çocukların atıştırmalıklarını yedikleri kısa bir aradan
sonra hemen 2. Sahne aynı coşkuyla başladı. Final sonrasında tüm oyuncular yeniden sahneye
çıkarak çocuklarla tanıştılar, tokalaştılar. Bazı öğrencilerimiz imzalarını bile istediler. Daha sonra öğle
yemeklerimizi yemek için pazarın karşısındaki Alana geçtik. Sonra otobüslerimizle okula geri döndük!
Bu hepimiz için harika bir gün oldu.

Santa Visits Early Years - Photo Wall
There was a super secret surprise for the Early Years children on December 17th. Santa himself
took time out from his busy schedule in the North Pole to visit our youngest children (twice! ...and
he looked younger every time!)

bir sürpriz beklemekteydi. Noel Babanın ta kendisi Kuzey
Kutbundaki yoğun işlerininden zaman ayrırarak en
küçüklerimizi ziyarete gelmişti (üstelik iki kez!... Ve her
seferinde daha da gençleşti!)
