College RESPECT
RESPONSIBILITY and
ACHIEVEMENT in our
learning COMMUNITY
Our Vision
Craigieburn Secondary
College believes that
education makes a difference
to the life opportunities
of its students.
The College’s vision is to
provide an environment in
which every student
achieves their highest
potential.
Principal’s Message
NAPLAN Results
NAPLAN reports for Year 7 and Year 9 students have arrived in the school and will be mailed
home this week. This year’s results continue to reflect the high level of improvement in student
outcomes across the College. High learning growth between Year 7 and Year 9 is significantly
above the mean state growth particularly for spelling and numeracy, and this builds on our
above state mean growth results for reading and numeracy last year.
The Student Attitudes to School Survey results also show a significant increase in all areas with
students reporting high levels of learning confidence, stimulating learning environment and
teacher effectiveness. It is very pleasing to see that the amazing work that our teachers have
been engaged in over that last five or more years is being acknowledged by our students.
Discovery Day
Discovery Day continues to be a major event in our school calendar and is a real showpiece of
our value of Community. Years 8, 9 and 10 students participated in subject discovery activities
and used information gained to help them choose subjects for 2016. Our year 11’s took the
next step in their VCE/VCAL education by confirming the subjects they will study for their ATAR
score next year. During the day we had over 500 grade 5 students from a number of local
primary schools participate in activities. The young ones had a great day exploring the school
and finding out what happens in Secondary School classrooms. The huge effort made by all of
our teachers and support staff in preparation for, and running of, the day was evident in the
amazing displays and engaging lessons that were offered. Great job everyone!
Awards Ceremony
I was very proud to preside over our 2015 mid year awards ceremony. As is tradition we
opened the ceremony for each sub-school with a musical number from our students and I
continue to be in awe of the talent that we have in our school community. The awards
ceremony provides an opportunity for the school to recognise and celebrate those students
who uphold our value of achievement and importantly, to also recognise those students who
made significant improvements in their learning across the semester. Congratulations to all our
students who received awards. A list of awards recipients can be found at the end of this
newsletter.
This year Oscar Yildiz from the Bully Zero Foundation presented to our Junior School students
telling us some heart wrenching stories about the effects of bullying. His message was precise
and hard hitting and made us all reflect on the importance of treating people with respect
every day in all of our actions.
Building Works
Our 300 seat Performing Arts Centre is finally due to begin in November this year. There are
plans and mock up images of the finished building in our front office and I invite parents to
come and have a look at what will be a magnificent addition to the learning spaces at our
school.

Uniform
Uniform - Call for Working Party Members
Our school uniform policy is due for renewal and this gives me a chance to seek community input about updating our current
uniform policy. One of the agenda items will be changing our uniform policy to allow students to wear their sports
uniform for the day. One of the challenges to this change is that we continue to have many students who do not wear
the correct sports uniform. Please see the pictures of correct uniform below.
Only when we have all students in correct sports uniform will the school consider changing the uniform policy to
allow students to wear their sports uniform all day.
If any parents are interested to be part of a uniform working party please contact the school.
Please be informed that if you do require to purchase any uniform that there will be a price rise at PSW on 2 nd November
2015.

Programs
Youth Program
Paskal, Anthony and myself (Simone) were nominated by our school to be a part of the Yuroke Youth Advisory Council. Over
the next few months we will be discussing a range of issues in our local area with Ros Spence, State Minister of Yuroke and
students from other schools. We have had two meetings so far. In these meetings we have discussed with each other the
types of issues we would like to work on and together we are working on the different ways in solving potential problems.
We students have made agreements on what current issues we would like to work on. The issues are bullying, resourcing in
schools, public transport and vandalism.
On 29th July 2015, we had our second meeting. Ros organised to meet with Rob Mitchell, Federal Member for McEwen and
Oscar Yildiz, Moreland City Councillor and Bully Zero Australia Ambassador to help gain a better understanding on some of
the issues. They spoke to us about slow internet speeds and Australian bullying.
We were given from Oscar “Bully Zero” waistbands, cards, brochures, mints, etc. We were also given orange “Bully Zero”
pins. Some may have seen them on either Anthony, Paskal or myself. We are honoured to be a part of this program as our
voices are getting heard. As young adults we can gain an insight into the adult choices made. We would recommend and
encourage other students to participate in this wonderful experience next time, as it has opened up our eyes to a number of
issues being raised by other students around the area. We hope that together our voices can make a difference.
Paskal 12B, Simone 12B and Anthony 12D
Student Leadership Program
On 23rd July I attended the Stride Student Leadership Program for the day. Throughout the activities I learnt quite a few
things. I learnt what the ideal qualities are to make a good leader. A lot of the activities were team building. The activities
that we did were strategies to deal with everyday problems. We also did an activity where we walked around the room with
our heads down not talking to anyone, then walked around the room all cheerful and saying hello to each other. That activity
taught us how to read body language, so that if we ever see a student looking down, we can approach them and help them
out.
Throughout the day, I had interacted with all of the student leaders. From the variety of students that were there we heard a
lot of different point of views on different situations. We also interacted with the teacher supervising us and the special
guest.

Cyberbullying
Schools have been informed of a newly formed Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner. The Act allows children
suffering from serious cyberbullying to contact the Office of the Children’s eSafety Commissioner to have content removed if
social media companies do not remove the offending content after it has been reported to them.
The Office has also absorbed the Australian Communications and Media Authority’s Cybersmart program and associated
educator materials, professional development resources and information for children and their families. These resources can
be found on the Office’s website www.esafety.gov.au.
Our College takes a strong stand against bullying and I am hopeful that this new initiative will help to mitigate and resolve
cyberbullying that might occur in our community.

of our model behaviour throughout the whole event. A DVD of
the showcase will be forwarded to the school in a few weeks
time. Thanks to everyone for your help and support.

General Information
Are you the parent or carer
of a child with a disability?
As part of the Victorian Government commitment to
make Victoria the Education State, the Department of
Education and Training has begun a review into how
schools can better support all students with special
needs.
Renowned human rights practitioner and Australia's
former Disability Commissioner, Dr Graeme Innes, will
lead face-to-face consultations with peak bodies,
professional
associations,
unions,
advocacy
associations, and independent statutory bodies to
review the Program for Students with Disabilities. The
review is designed to guide and improve our
Department's approach to providing support to
students with additional needs.
The review into the Program for Students with
Disabilities includes the opportunity for parents to tell
the Department what they think of the current
program and how it can be improved.
You can get involved by taking an online survey which
will be available from September via:
www.education.vic.gov.au/specialneedsplan
Your responses will help shape the Education State
and encourage creative solutions to providing
outstanding special needs education in Victoria.

General Sport
Junior Girls Football Regional Finals
Term 3 – Interschool sport
With the exception of basketball, term three is usually pretty quiet for interschool sport. But this year we have had
numerous teams make it through to the next round, which gives them the opportunity to compete at the Northern
Metropolitan Region finals. Over the last three weeks, we have already had the junior girls footy and intermediate boys and
girls badminton teams compete at the NMR finals. Teams still to come are the:
 Year 7 boys and girls soccer
 Year 8 boys soccer
 Year 8 boys badminton
 Year 7 boys and girls volleyball
 Year 8 boys volleyball
Good luck to all these teams, as well as to the following students who have qualified for the regional athletics day: Breeana
Fidanza, Freba Nazari, Fawzi Seraider, Nasser Seraider, Jack Stevens, Michael Stevens, Bj Symons and Brandon Tapelu.
It’s fantastic to have so many students getting involved in the school community and doing a great job of representing the
school!
