SHAVUOT
JUNE 4, 2014
Shavuot is the second of the shalosh regalim, the three
Pilgrimage Festivals of earlier times. We welcome Shavuot
on the sixth of Sivan. Shavuot means “weeks.” It refers to
the timing of the festival, which is held approximately seven
weeks following Pesach. Shavuot is a celebration of both the
year’s first harvest and zeman matan torateinu, the season
of the giving of the Torah at Mount Sinai. It is a joyous and
important occasion, recalling our sacred covenant with God.
HISTORY
Shavuot has both an agricultural and a historical story
attached to it. Because we were once farmers in the Land
of Israel, Shavuot is closely tied with the harvest cycle. The
Torah calls Shavuot Yom Habikkurim, or the Days of the first
fruits of their harvest, the bikkurim, to Jerusalem as an offering
to God. In addition, Shavuot commemorates the day when
our ancestors, standing at Mount Sinai, received the Torah
as a symbol of our covenant with Adonai. After God freed
us from the Egyptians and led us through the Sea of Reeds,
God led us to Mount Sinai. There, God
was to speak to us. For three days, our
ancestors waited until finally, amid
thunder and lightning, God spoke the
words of the Ten Commandments.
Here, we were given the Torah, the
thread by which each Jew is connected,
the basis of Jewish life as we know it.
THE BOOK OF RUTH
We read from the Book of Ruth on Shavuot. The
great- grandmother of King David, Ruth is an important
woman in Jewish tradition. As the Book of Ruth teaches,
Ruth was not born a Jew. Rather, she
converted to Judaism and accepted
the Torah as the Jews did at Mount Sinai.
Also, the story of Ruth is told during the
time of the harvest period. It therefore
seems appropriate to retell her story on
this festival. Many synagogues like our own choose Shavuot
as a time for young Jewish adults to affirm their faith in God
by partaking in Confirmation ceremonies.

Rosh Hodesh, the start of the Hebrew month,
JUNE 27th & JUNE 28th.
Rosh Hodesh, that start of each Hebrew month
when the new crescent moon appears in the sky, is
a time for celebration and reflection, bringing with
it hope, light and promise, growth and fulfillment,
not only for the moon, but for us. The rabbis of
the Mishna taught (in Tannit 4:6) that five world
changing events occurred on the 17th of Tammuz;
Moses broke the 10 commandments, daily sacrifice
ceased, the walls of Jerusalem were breached, A
torah was burned and an idol was placed in the
center of Jerusalem. It’s great to enjoy the carefree
potential and freedom of the hot summer but we
also need to remember the realities of our past.
Rosh Hodesh Tammuz is June 27th and 28th.
Look for the new moon on June 27th.

On the 9th of Av Jews around the world
commemorate the Destruction of the First
Temple in Jerusalem (as well as numerous
other dark events in Jewish history) and the
exile of the Jews from the Land of Israel in
the years 586 BCE. The quarter moon we
see on August 14th when we observe Tisha
B’Av, lit their way and gave them hope at a
time of despair. It is an opportunity for us
to reflect on the small sources of light and
hope not only in our personal lives but for
the Jewish people nearly 2000 years later!

MY DREAMS FOR THE FUTURE
WE ARE PLEASED TO REPRINT (edited for reasons of space) THE HEARTFELT MESSAGE OF OUR MEMBER,
NEIL D.STEINBERG, PRESIDENT & CEO OF THE RHODE ISLAND FOUNDATION,
DELIVERED ON APRIL 25, 2014
By way of background, this is my third time
speaking from the Bimah. The first was 47
years ago at my Bar Mitzvah in West Haven,
Connecticut. The next two times were for
each of my sons’ Bar Mitzvahs right here.
So this is a lot to live up to.
When Rabbi Les called me a few months
ago to ask if I would speak about My
Dreams for the Future, I had several
thoughts. WHY ME?
So with great honor and humility, and
experience more than wisdom, let’s talk
about My Dreams for the Future. It quickly
popped into my head that when thinking
about the future I immediately thought about
the past. I hope to not forget the past and
what I have learned just living life for many
decades. I have a young colleague who
once said to me that everyone told her she
needed more experience and wanted to
know how she could get more experience.
I told her “live longer.” I have been very
fortunate and blessed over many years. I
have had a decent career with now the
best job I have ever had. It is an honor
and privilege to lead the Rhode Island
Foundation and I have never worked harder.
Any my wonderful family. Genie and I met
40 years ago at a college on the hill up
the street from here and have two sons
who are older but not completely grown up
(many will know what I mean). And there
have been ups and downs that we have all
experienced; obstacles, joy, heartache and
important lessons learned. There are a few I
want to make sure I remember in the future.
Every time I walk into this synagogue, or
any synagogue for that matter, I remember
my grandfather. He was our Jewish patriarch
who would listen to me read Hebrew and
practice for my Bar Mitzvah. I remember
vividly him sitting in the front row with my
parents, and grandmother knowing that he
would catch any mistake I made reciting my
Haftarah. That I will always remember.
My parents who pushed me and guided
46 and provided good values. I can also
me
see my mother sitting here not that long
ago. I remember after she passed away
and we cleaned out her apartment, I found
the clippings and pictures from my career
that she never told me she saw. I hope and
dream that I remember and have shared with
my children to do what you think is right. In
the absence of direction, instruction, rules
and regulations, use your judgement and
always do what YOU think is right.
We all have had a relative, a teacher, a
boss, a coach, a Rabbi or a mentor that
taught us and inspired us and I dream that
we can all provide the same inspiration for
others in the future.
My dream is to always think young. Some
that know me well would say immature ~
but I can live with that! I never want to feel
as old as I am (aches and pains aside).
The discovery and wonder and continuous
learning of youth I believe is a wonderful
way to get to get older.
There are some basics that I have learned
that I hope I remember in the future. To be
more patient and less patient; more at home
and less getting things done at work. A hot
shower, cold water to drink, and a good
sitcom on tv have always been things I have
appreciated and want to be part of my
future.
As a young banker I learned: save more,
borrow less, and don’t invest in something
you don’t understand. These are all still true
and will be in the future.
I dream that life will be a little simpler. Many
know that I go at a pretty fast pace and
in the future I want to make sure I better
appreciate life around me. And I yearn for
a day that technology is simpler and more
logical. I thought it was supposed to make
life easier; so I dream that it will save me
time not consume it and that I do not have
to be a tech expert. That being said, it
amazes me that the universal solution with
most tech problems is to turn it off and turn it
back on. Life should only work that way! My
dream for the future would not mean much
without family, friends and time. I want my
sons to be happy on their terms not based
on material standards imposed by others. I
want Genie and I to grow old together and
to always be able to laugh. Her laughing at
me and me laughing at the comics. As an
aside I hope we can still hear each other
in the future. A few years ago she was
concerned that my hearing was going and
when I went to the doctor for a physical
she told me to get my hearing checked. At
the end of the exam I told him of my wife’s
concern. He asked how long I have been
married, I told him at that point over 25
years. He told me he did not need to test
me, it was selective hearing!
I hope and dream that in the future we all
make peace in our own way with our own
definitions of happiness and success. I
dream that many more in our community will
learn to give back time, treasure and talent
that is needed now more than ever. It has
been proven that we feel better when we
give back and when we feel better we are
more successful.
I dream that all the candidates who want
to lead us in Rhode Island will say what
they are going to do, how they will do it,
and then actually fulfill those promises when
elected.
My dream is to remember and continue to
live the Olympic Creed: “The most important
thing in the Olympic Games is not to win but
to take part. Just as the most important thing
in life is not the triumph but the struggle. The
essential thing is not to have conquered but
to have fought well.”
With gratitude and humility I thank you for
this opportunity tonight. I am sure many of
my dreams are our dreams. And I will leave
you my last Dream for the Future and one
I hope you will share. While learning from
the past, my dream is to look forward, be
positive and take rhetoric to action. And in
the famous words of Nike ~ Let’s Just Do It!

“Beyond Fiddler”
A SMASH HIT!
On SATURDAY, MAY 2, more than
125 people were treated to a cabaret
starring our own Cantor Judy
Seplowin, Cantor Jonathan Comisar,
Doug Jabara, Kathryne Jennings and
Fred Scheff. The program for Beyond
“Fiddler” featured Broadway songs
with Jewish characters and themes.
Cantor Comisar provided a running
narrative focusing on the history
of “Jewish” Broadway. Among the
selection were songs from little
known shows as well as contemporary,
highly popular pieces. Thanks to
our hardworking and dedicated
committee: Jill Caslowitz, Susan Fine,
Dianne Isenberg, Susan H. Kaplan,
Gail Solomon, Carla Spacone, Vanessa
Weiner and Wendy Joering. With their
artistic talents the Silverstein Meeting
Hall was transformed into a cabaret
night club with New York style deli
served at each table. More than $6500
was raised in support of our temple’s
cultural programming.

three decades, who have been so
kind and helpful to me throughout
all that time.
First of all, I want to thank all the
members of this Congregation Sons
of Israel and David, Temple Beth-El,
for giving me a home for all these
years. It has been a privilege to
work with and for you.
I especially want to thank Rabbi Les
Gutterman, who has been Senior
Rabbi of this congregation throughout
my tenure at the library, for all his
support for me and the Braude
Library. In my mind, I have often
thought of him, in the manner of the
appellations of some British kings,
as the “Rabbi of the 3 W’s (Warm,
Welcoming and Witty)”.
I am aware that this kind of
association betrays, of course, my
education in a British Commonwealth
country. In Rabbi Gutterman’s kind
article in the “Shofar”, he has added
a decade to my actual employment
(27 years) here at the Temple,
although it is true that I had a
connection to the Temple for at least
a decade before that , through Rabbi
William Braude, of blessed memory,
with whom my former husband
studied on a regular basis, and who
came to Plymouth with his wife, Penn,
to lead the service for the naming of
my older daughter, Yona, in 1976.
I also need to thank all the clergy,
temple staff, library committee
members and volunteers for the past
Inspired by Rabbi Braude’s devotion
to learning, and books ,and,
therefore, the library of the Temple,

and his active support of my two longterm predecessors, Mattie Pincus and
Maryland Estes, of blessed memory, I
have always endeavoured to continue
the library’s tradition of enhancing
our claim, as a congregation and as
individuals, to the label bestowed on
us in the 7th century of the Common
Era, by none other than Mohammed,
“The people of the Book”. I hope that I
have made that appellation more true
and meaningful for many of you, your
children, and your grandchildren.
Now that the library will be entering
a new era, I hope my successor will
continue to support that tradition and
add a new, digital dimension to it,
so that we can perhaps add another
label to our self-description, going
simultaneously back in history, to
Moses, and forward to the present
era, to call ourselves “people of the

Thank you all for your good wishes,

good- bye.

Welcoming Your Baby into Your Interfaith Family
Join us for a practical discussion of Jewish ceremonies for welcoming and naming a child.
We’ll explore meaningful ways that Jewish rituals can honor and respect parents and grandparents
from other faith traditions and cultural backgrounds. We will discuss opportunities to express gratitude
for the blessings of parenthood that will enhance your growing family.

“To me, becoming a Bat Mitzvah means taking on more responsibilities
and becoming more active in the Jewish Community.” Alexandra’s Mitzvah
Mania Project involved working with the Gotta Have Sole Foundation
which provides new shoes for the homeless. She packed shoes for
various shelters, decorated cards and wrote personal notes to the children
receiving the shoes. Alexandra has her sights set on attending an ivyleague college to study law, becoming a coxswain in regattas, travelling
the world and promoting philanthropy.

Parents: Karen Rosen & David Pomerantz
Bat Mitzvah Date: June 14, 2014
Grade: 7th
School: The Wolf School
Favorite Activities: Fishing, skateboarding, gardening, biking
To Max, becoming a Bar Mitzvah means he will be considered an adult
in the Jewish religion. He is proud to be able to have risen to this very
important goal. Max’s Mitzvah Mania project involves growing fresh
fruit and vegetables and delivering them to local soup kitchens and food
banks. Max looks forward to a long and healthy life surrounded by family
and friends.
SARAH
GOLDMAN
Parents: Terry & David Goldman
Bat Mitzvah Date: June 21, 2014
Grade: 7th
School: The Wheeler School
Favorite Activities: Zip lining, surfing, softball, tennis
Sarah says that becoming a Bat Mitzvah means becoming more
responsible and moving toward adulthood in the Jewish community,
being able to look after oneself and others, and being a role model for
her younger sister. For her mitzvah projects, Sarah walked for the March
of Dimes, designed team t-shirts for the Neurodevelopment Center, and
currently volunteers at Sophia Academy, an independent school for lowincome middle school girls. In the future, she would like to balance work,
family and spirituality and feels that her religion has provided her with the
foundation to succeed at whatever she chooses to do, which hopefully will
involve working with animals.
