YOU’RE ABOUT TO ENTER THE VOID. Street sounds from
São Paulo, with connections to other spots in Brasil, such
as Salvador (the Orishas capitol of the country), Recife
(motherland to the infectious Mangue Beat), Curitiba (call
it Neverland), Minas Gerais (birthplace of the infamous
Clube Da Esquina, spearheaded by the incredible Milton
Nascimento), and Rio de Janeiro (the one and only
Sambadrome). The style is unorthodox, urgent, dirty and
undeniably from this time and space we call 'now'. Blending
both the foundations of boom-bap and brasilian rhythmic
and melodic heritage, Daora is an introduction to the most
cutting-edge beat culture and percussive oriented music
that's happening in the alternative lanes of this particular
third world megalopolis and its' like-minded peers from other
landscapes. Take a walk with us through these hieroglyphic
pixo letter-sprayed streets.
In unavoidable b-boy style, disc ‘Um’ starts with a couple of
gifted rhymers who got MPB (Música Popular Brasileira –
popular brasilian music listened by everyone, everywhere)
elements in their tracks (Espião, Ogi & Stereodubs) before
we switch to the other side of the moon and modern-day MPB
artists with hip hop influences (Curumin, Amabis). What else
would you expect from these post-tropicalist cats?
After that, heads start to feel the effects of the high with
some of the finest psychedelic rap tunes the urban jungle
has ever produced (DJ Mako, Elo Da Corrente and yours
truly), which are suitably dope bedfellows to the heavyweight
leftfield cuts that follow (Tetine, Response Pirituba, M.
Takara 3).
Next thing you know, the new generation of mic controllers
are bringin’ it back to the roots with local flavour (Sombra,
Rincón Sapiência, Karol Conká, Doncesão), before we
hit the final frontier with dope-ass 21st century free jazz
(Psilosamples, Bodes & Elefantes).
If there’s an acid chaos impression runnin’ around yourself
at some point, don’t worry... that’s how it feels to be in the
raw, rugged São Paulo atmosphere that is also incredibly
surrealistic, creative driven and makes one feel alive like
a punch in the face and a sloppy tongue kiss, both at the
same time.
Disc ‘Dois’ of Daora brings the party in a more Afro and
dubwise but always spiritual direction, starting with a
panoramic selection that showcases the different styles
representin’ Minas Gerais (Iconili), Recife (Afrobombas) and
SP (Rodrigo Campos, Bixiga 70).
Compiled by Rodrigo Brandão with additional selections on
Dois from Lewis Robinson. Cover image by Daniel Melim.
Designed by Tristan Manco.
5/ AFROBOMBAS De Sal & Sol Eu Sou
Next-up are the sons & daughters of the city’s 80’s avantgarde generation who show their powers, bridgin’ to some of
that good ol’reggae feeling (Metá Metá, Iara Rennó, Anelis
Assumpção, Braunation).
Rio de Janeiro’s spontaneous afro-pop energy comes next to
bring balance (Abayomy Afrobeat Orquestra, Lucas Santanna
– born in Salvador but livin’ in the ‘wonderful city’ for a long
time – and BNegão & Seletores de Frequência), opening the
way for some modern voices from Bahia (Soraia Drummond,
Baiana System), probably the most african part of the whole
country.
At last but not least, some jazzy-oriented anthems show up
to close the cycle with a finesse that pays tribute to the old
school icons who made it worldwide back in the days, from
Pixinguinha to Dom Um Romão (Afroelectro, Sambanzo and
Os Ritmistas).
Hopefully, at the end of this audio tour you’re familiar with
the natural mystic in the air, far beyond the “nothing but
football and carnival” cliché concept that sticks to those who
don’t know the half.
