Visitor`s Guide - Centennial House Bed and Breakfast
Moody Birthplace
Northfield Church Bazaar Day — On the first Saturday
of December, the churches of Northfield and the Northfield
Kiwanis start the holiday season with crafts, raffles, silent auctions,
homemade goods and food booths up and down Main Street.
Special Day in Northfield — A day of holiday shopping,
old-fashioned crafts, seasonal foods, cookie decorating, horsedrawn wagon rides and other indoor and outdoor activities. Held
on the second Saturday in December from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at
locations throughout the town. For more information call
Centennial House Bed and Breakfast at (413) 498-5921 or

ArtsFest — Held each year in August or September, ArtsFest
features art exhibits and sales, live music, food vendors and art
and other activities for children. The event takes place from
10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Main Street.

area include:

Northfield, Bernardston and Gill, Massachusetts
While noted on our map because of its historic significance,
Schell Memorial Bridge is not open to the public. A popular
subject for painters and photographers, the Schell is best
viewed from riverbank locations up or downstream from it,
such as the Pauchaug Brook boat ramp area.
• Northfield Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center
riverfront picnic area, Ferry Road, Northfield.
• Bennett Meadow Conservation Area, on the west side of the
river off Route 10
• Barton Cove, Gill: 1.5 miles east of Turners Falls on Route 2;
recreational motor boats, canoes and fishing boats
Birding, Fishing and Boating — Northfield is one of two
municipalities in the Commonwealth that is separated by a river.
In our case, it is the majestic Connecticut River, fourth largest in
the United States. The Connecticut River begins at the top of
Vermont near the Canadian border and runs all the way to Long
Island Sound. The miles of waterways, broad meadows and
vegetation protected as part of the Connecticut River State
Park make areas in Northfield and Gill a haven for birders,
fishing and boating enthusiasts. Public access to the river is
possible at a number of locations:
• Pauchaug Brook Wildlife Management Area, Mass. Division
of Conservation and Recreation’s 161-acre wildlife area,
located one mile north of the center of Northfield on Route
63: concrete boat ramp and ample parking for vehicles and
trailers. Pauchaug Brook is stocked with trout for fishing.
downtown Northfield, it runs through Erving, Gill, Greenfield,
Deerfield, Montague and Sunderland. In addition to this official
bikeway, there are numerous scenic rides in and around the
three town area for varying skill levels, some of which lead up
into Vermont and New Hampshire and loop back. For more
information visit www.massbike.org/bikeways.

Bicycling — The Franklin County Bikeway provides a great
way to tour the Pioneer Valley through a combination of bike
paths, bike lanes and bike routes/shared roadways. Starting in
Northfield State Forest and Other Trails — Although their
name is a misnomer today because of their lush tree cover and
abundant plant and animal life, the Bald Hills is the actual name
for the gentle range that faces you as you cross the Connecticut
on Route 10 heading toward downtown Northfield. The range
offers numerous marked trails and the summits provide
dramatic views of Mount Wachusett to the east, Mount
Monadnock to the northeast and Mount Ascutney.
Multiple Hiking Opportunities In and Around Northfield —
Each of the areas with multiple trails are noted by shaded
areas on our map with trail heads and parking noted by a "P."
Numerous additional trails run all through Northfield. Download
maps free of charge at www.northfieldtrails.org. Perhaps the
best known system of trails are the 26 miles of trails owned
and maintained by the Northfield Mountain Recreation and
Environmental Center (see map). For more information, visit
www.firstlightpower.com/northfield.
Hiking — The New England National Scenic Trail runs from
Erving, Mass. through Northfield to Warwick, Mass. and the
New Hampshire border, and was formerly known as the
Metacomet and Monadnock Trail. Hikers should be aware
that sections of the original trail may have been moved to
accommodate the new designation. Consult the Northfield
Trails Association (www.northfieldtrails.org) for the most upto-date information on the transition.
Hiking
Antique shops and artist studios dot the landscape and may
be open on either a regular, seasonal or ‘by appointment’ basis.
Many artists exhibit their work locally at private galleries, in public
buildings such as libraries, or in local restaurants. Regular monthly
‘art walks’ take place year round in Amherst, Northampton and
Brattleboro. Historic Deerfield, Yankee Candle, Magic Wings
Butterfly Conservatory, Kringle Candle in Bernardston, the Five
Colleges, and the unique shopping, restaurants, music venues
and other attractions of Shelburne Falls, Greenfield, Turners Falls
and Northampton are all within easy reach of the Gateway
towns. Brattleboro and Southern Vermont, and Keene, New
Hampshire offer shopping, galleries, restaurants, colleges and
more attractions.

Several river access points provide opportunities for boating,
kayaking, canoeing and fishing in the three towns. In Gill, those
include the French King Bridge on Route 2 between Erving and
Gill, and the Barton Cove Recreation and Camping Area,
operated by the area’s largest recreational facility, the Northfield
Mountain Recreation and Environmental Center, located in
Northfield (see display ad and map). Between mid-June and
early October, NMREC operates a narrated river cruise from

The Connecticut River supports some of the richest farmland
in the world, and agriculture and horticulture thrive in the three
gateway towns. Visitors can spend a day browsing farm stands
and greenhouses brimming with local produce, herbs and
beautiful plants and flowers. You can pick your own berries, and
purchase unique farm products such as artisanal cheeses, maple
syrup, and flours ground from local wheat. Several farms raise
their own beef cattle, dairy cows, sheep and goats. You can
visit an alpaca or an emu farm. Two of the three towns have
farmers markets once a week during the growing season.
In Bernardston, the farmers market is located in the United
Church parking lot on Church Street/Route 10 every Tuesday
from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. and the one in Northfield takes place on
Thursdays from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. in the parking lot of the
Trinitarian Church at 147 Main Street. For a list of farmers
markets, farm stands, CSAs, pick-your-own farms and farmto-table restaurants, visit www.farmfresh.org and search on
Northfield, Gill or Bernardston.

Bernardston Yesterday

Recreation and Education
in Gill
Bernardston’s earliest settlement dates back to the time of
King Philip’s War in 1676. A noted mining, farming and food
production area, Bernardston was one of the first places in the
Commonwealth to produce maple syrup. Bella Notte Ristorante
sits high on one of its mountains overlooking the Pioneer Valley
toward Leverett and Amherst. One of the top 100 small golf
courses in the country, Crumpin-Fox, is here, along with New
England’s newest candle
destination and future
restaurant complex,
Kringle Candle. An
advanced rider section
of the Franklin County
Bikeway loops from here
up into neighboring
Vermont and back.
Located west of Northfield on a bend in the Connecticut River,
the town of Gill offers numerous opportunities for sightseeing
and outdoor recreation. Perhaps its most well-known attraction
is the French King Bridge, a stunning iron bridge on Route 2
that overlooks the river and the French King Gorge. Views from
the bridge are spectacular at any time, especially during fall
foliage season. About a mile from the bridge, the Nature
Conservancy’s Stacy Mountain Preserve (www.nature.org)
offers a marked hiking trail through the 169 acres of forest,
native species and vernal pools. The river is accessible from the
state’s Barton Cove Boat Ramp and the camping and boat
rental facilities of the Northfield Mountain Recreation Center.
Local agriculture thrives here with pick-your-own strawberries
and fresh farm products available at Uppingil Farm. Northfield
Mount Hermon School, also located in Gill, operates a dairy
farm where lavender and maple products are produced.
Northfield and the Pioneer Valley
The history of Northfield is the history of the Northern Pioneer
Valley. Generations of native Squakheags lived here before the
first Englishmen came to purchase land in 1672. For two years
settlers and native people lived in peace until the settlement
was destroyed in King Philip’s War. Seven years later the grant
holders returned to rebuild. This settlement too was doomed
to fail due to the wars between the French and English. At the
end of Queen Anne’s War in 1713, the survivors petitioned for
a renewal of their grants. Governor Dudley agreed if an
“Orthodox Minister” was engaged and the town be named
Northfield. The first meeting house was built right in the middle
of the street in the center of town.
After the Revolutionary War the town grew with the new nation.
On Main Street, where the original 17th century property lines
are still discernable, the Stearns family of architect-builders
erected the handsome Federal and Greek Revival style homes
lining the street today. During the “Great Migration” of the
19th century many Irish families came with the building of the
railroads and Polish immigrants came to farm the fertile land.
World-renown evangelist, Dwight L. Moody, born in Northfield,
returned to found Northfield Seminary for Young Ladies in 1879
and Mount Hermon School for Boys a few years later on the
other side of the river in Gill. The excitement generated by
Moody’s summer religious conferences attracted visitors from
all over the world, with 40 trains a day arriving at the station on
the west side of the river. Local preservationists hope to
rehabilitate the ornate bridge built over the Connecticut in
1904 by wealthy industrialist and Moody follower Francis Schell.
The American Youth Hostel Movement was founded in
Northfield in 1934 and headquartered for a time in Schell’s
former mansion.
Today the town retains its 17th century linear common and an
impressive array of fine 19th century homes and monuments
noting milestones in the town’s history are carefully preserved
along Main Street, forming an interesting self-guided tour.
The “Great Meadow,” which stretches along the bank of the
Connecticut River, is still planted to corn as it has been for a
thousand years. In 2009, Moody’s original girls’ school campus
was purchased on behalf of the C.S. Lewis Foundation which
plans to open a “Great Books” college here.
