SUMMER SCHOOL 2016
The Beaver Dam Unified School District is again offering a comprehensive Summer School program to students
in the Beaver Dam area. The program is available to children regardless of whether they attend public or
parochial school during the year.
This year we are providing a variety of courses at all levels. We continue to offer skill building classes that are
designed to strengthen subject areas in which students are weak. They are structured to be more remedial in
nature. Enrichment classes are also offered to provide students with learning activities that broaden their
skills and enrich their interests. Hopefully, there will be enough student interest in each course because a
sufficient number of students are needed to run a class section.
Classes are not guaranteed!
If classes fill up, your child may be scheduled into an alternative class.
Some classes have a fee to cover costs for supplies. Fee amounts are listed in the course
descriptions. Fees are required to be paid when submitting the registration form. Exception: Fees
are waived if the student qualifies for free/reduced meals during the 2015 - 2016 school year.
Teachers will often recommend that a student enroll in Summer School to further develop the skills and
abilities needed to carry on the work of the next grade. Parents are urged to give serious thought to such
recommendations. Please note that some courses are available ONLY through teacher recommendation.

Summer Food Service Program
The Beaver Dam School District is proud to announce that is joining the USDA and DPI in offering a lunch
program for our summer school program. Free lunches will be served every day of summer school at both
Prairie View and Washington Elementary schools. All students are eligible to receive free meals under this
program, which is funded by the USDA. Lunches will be served between the second and third period each day.
We hope you plan for you child(ren) to join us for a nutritious lunch every day.
REGISTRATION
REGISTRATION FORMS AND FEES ARE DUE May 1.
Students should register at their respective school offices (parochial or public) before May 1. Early registration is
encouraged, so that program needs can be determined. Registrations will be processed in the order in which they are
received. Students are not guaranteed all classes they choose.
Please note, material fees are required for some classes.
Fees must accompany the registration forms, which are located in the back of this booklet.
If for some reason you require a refund, a written request must be submitted to Michelle Falkinham at the ESC, 705
McKinley Street no later than July 1. Please include your name, your child’s name, the classes they registered for, and a
brief explanation as to the reason for the refund. Requests received after July 1 will not be granted. Refunds for BDUSD
students will be applied to any unpaid fees or deposited into the family lunch account. Non BDUSD students will be sent
a refund check.
Student schedules will be mailed about a week before Summer School starts. Classes are arranged and staff employed
on the basis of registration numbers. The number of students registered for a class determines the number of sections
created for that class and the times it will be offered.
Students taking instrumental music lessons should register on the
Summer School form and return to the music directors.

Most summer school classes will run from Monday, June 20, through Friday, July 22, 2015. (No classes on Monday, July
4). Classes which vary from this schedule are identified in the course descriptions. A few classes at Prairie View are
scheduled from 8:35 – 11:25 a.m. and are listed in the course descriptions.

ELEMENTARY REGULATIONS
Attendance: Students enrolled in summer school courses are encouraged to attend all classes. Students enrolled in
extra reinforcement courses must attend all classes, except for emergencies or permission of the summer school
principal. Please call to report all absences. Pre-K to Grade 1, call 885-7380. Grades 2 to 5, call 885-7376.
Dress and Conduct: Students are expected to follow the same standards of dress and conduct as those which are in
effect during the school year.
Emergency Phone Numbers: Please list an emergency phone number on the registration form. At times we may need
to contact someone regarding your child.
Transportation
Shuttle Bus
There will be shuttle buses that run once daily beginning at Jefferson Elementary (8:05 am), stopping at
Lincoln Elementary (8:15 am), and arriving at Prairie View and Washington Elementary Schools (8:35 am). At
12:30 pm, the shuttles will leave Prairie View and Washington and head back to Lincoln and Jefferson.
Each shuttle bus is labeled either Prairie View or Washington and will be supervised by summer school staff.
PreK-1st grade students will ride the Prairie View bus, while students in grades 2-5 will ride the Washington
bus.

Bus and Car Loading Zones
Students may be dropped off and picked up on the school side of the street on Grove and Center. We strongly urge
parents not to park on Center Street or the school side of Grove Street, as it causes too much congestion with safety
hazards due to double parking, etc. Parking would be best on Liberty, Gilmore, or the opposite side of Grove Street.
PLEASE DO NOT PARK OR PICK UP STUDENTS IN THE YELLOW BUS ZONE ON GROVE STREET.
Bicycle Safety
The decision to allow children to ride bicycles from home to school is a decision parents must make. We
establish no rule which states when a child is competent enough to handle a bicycle ride to school.
Bicycle racks are provided for students on the corner of Center and Gilmore and also on Grove Street. All
bikes are to be parked in the racks.
If your son or daughter uses a bicycle for getting to and from school, consider these safety reminders:
 Helmets are an important piece of equipment for safety.
 Riders should ride in single file on the way to and from school.
 Bicycles should be walked on the sidewalks of the school grounds.
 Bicycles should be in good working condition.
 Children are encouraged to lock their bicycles to avoid theft.
 Seats and handlebars ought to be properly adjusted.

Circle Driveway
Parents are asked to drop off their children in the circle drop only. Children should then walk to the
main entrance and enter our school. Children being picked up in the circle drop will exit the main
entrance and walk to the circle drop.
Parking Lot
Parents parking in our front parking lot are able to walk to our main entrance to drop off and pick up
their children.
Only the main entrance doors will be used for drop off and pick up.
Buses are the only vehicles allowed to use the west gated exit out onto Hwy E.

Getting Ready for 1st Grade
Speech Therapy is available to students in early
childhood through 1st grade who have been in the
speech program during the regular school year. Please
note- Speech Therapy does not interfere with a
student taking other courses during summer school as
it is administered on a “pull-out” basis and can be
scheduled around other classes.
Getting Ready for First Grade is intended for children
who need additional readiness work in multiple areas
to prepare them for first grade. Children must have
completed one year of kindergarten.

(pretend), and determining profit. Along the way, we
would also review concepts covered in school and take

Girl STRONG is a course designed to promote selfesteem, healthy decision making, and empowerment,

Instrumental Music - Band and Orchestra

Students may begin orchestra instruction during their 4th grade year. They may begin band
during their 5th grade year. This camp is for students who have not played an instrument
before. Middle school students who have not played before should also sign up.
This is a 1-week camp, which meets Monday-Friday for four hours each day. Students have
two options-- a morning camp, which runs from August 8th-12th and an afternoon camp, which
meets August 15th-19th. Please choose the camp that best fits your schedule.
This is a new format for our beginning program and it will feature many more experiences for
students including, small group lessons, large group rehearsals, music games and activities, and
special performances by community musicians.
Session I-- Monday 8/8 - Friday 8/12 from 8am - 12 noon
Session II-- Monday 8/15 - Friday 8/19 from 12 noon - 4 pm
Students must attend Band and Orchestra Registration on Saturday, April 23rd from
8am-1pm or Wednesday, April 27th from 3:30-6pm at the Beaver Dam High
School. Registration takes about 45 minutes.
