Which district is an up-andcoming neighbourhood?
The city is being developed,
with construction taking place
pretty much everywhere. Lots
of new restaurants can be
found in Osu. This has become
a central district that links
the nicest neighbourhoods.
This has led to a permanent
traffic jam on ➊ Oxford Street,
Osu’s most famous street,
which is kind of symbolic
for the economic growth that
Ghana has experienced over
the past decade.

and balconies, and there is a
huge outdoor garden where
you can relax. Kaya is one of
the few places in Accra where
you can enjoy a sense of space.
Where would you go for
some history of the city?
That would be the ➋ James
Town district. It’s the oldest
part of the city and was once
a trading post for the first
European explorers in West
Africa, even before the
colonial era. So, this is the
place where Accra arose.
The harbour is now a fishing
port, and you’ll find old villas
that once belonged to the
17th-century slave traders
here. Then, there is the pink
➌ Post Office inspired by
Indian architecture and built
by the British, a lighthouse
and the Makola Market (Kojo
Thompson Road).
Are there any good places
to drink coffee or tea?
Absolutely. Places such as
➍ Bread & Wine (13th Lane),
for example. It’s housed in
an old building in Osu that
has been cleverly converted
into a restaurant. At the front
is a small cafe with a French
bakery, where you can get
croissants, for example. But
you can also sit in the garden,
or drink nice cocktails in the
evening by the poolside.

Which are the best design

I like to go to Mobili Mania
Stúdió (Victor Hugo u. 45)
for great Italian furniture,
and also Hephaistos (Molnár
u. 27) for other interiors.
And what about bars?
One of the most dynamically
developing centres in downtown Budapest is the Gozsdu
Courtyard (Király u. 3.). It’s a
real meeting point combining
entertainment, gastronomy
and culture. My favourite spot
there is the bistro-bar-club
Spíler Shanghai (Király u. 13).
Where do you like to visit for
a bite to eat?
Nemsüti Bisztró (Hold u. 9). It’s
a small place with a friendly
atmosphere, and the food is
always different, delicious and
healthy. They also have great
vegan dishes, and drinks. Café
Gerlóczy (Gerlóczy u. 1) does
the best breakfast.
And fashion-wise, where
do you like to go?
Usually I wear the ready-towear pieces of my own brand
– just to test public opinion.
If I’m looking for jewellery,
I go to ➋ Treasure Budapest
(Aulich u.5).
Where do you go for art?
I recommend the Ludwig
Museum of Contemporary Art,
in the Palace of Arts (Komor
Marcell u. 1), and the Hopp
Ferenc Museum (Andrássy
u. 103), which shows Asian

Mulhane Expedition Outfitters
(1st Soula Close). This is a cosy
gallery, and only open on
Saturdays. The owner, Chris,
has amazing stories to tell
about old African art. He has
also assembled an impressive
collection that’s not for sale;
some of the pieces are really
museum-worthy.

What’s new and happening
in Budapest?
The 7th district in the Jewish
Quarter has a great mix of old,
ruined and renewed. Between
the renovated Liszt Academy
Concert Centre (Liszt Ferenc
tér 8) and Europe’s largest
Synagogue (Dohány u. 2),
you’ll find lots of romkocsma
(‘Ruin Pubs’) – abandoned
buildings that have been
converted into low-key clubs
and bars, with some creative
insight and old furniture.
These have become extremely
popular among the youth of
Budapest and Europe. Besides
that, you’ll also find excellent
street food restaurants and
bistros there, such as Fricska
and Könyvbár (Dob u. 56-58
and 45 respectively).
What is your favourite spot
for some lunch?
Bistro 22 (22 Josiah Tongogari
Street). The interior is very
simple and sleek, and the food
is fantastic. They have salads,
pastas, burgers, as well as
great wine and coffee.
What is your favourite piece
of architecture in the city?
The beautiful villa from the
colonial era, which now is
home to the restaurant Kaya
Energy Bar & Design (1-10th
Link Road). It has lots of

springs here. On the Buda
side, only a few minutes from
the heart of the city, you can
visit caves (Szemló-hegyi Cave,
Pusztaszeri u. 35), which were
created by these springs. They
are exciting places to visit – for
tourists and cave lovers. I love
the traditional Gellért Thermal
Bath (Kelenhegyi u 4) and
Széchenyi Spa Baths (Állatkerti
körút 9-11), Rudas (Döbrentei
tér 9) or the Turkish Medicinal
Bath (Fó u. 84).

Where could we find you
in the evening?
I’m usually at one of the Ruin
Pubs or watching a good film
in one of the art cinemas, like
➍ Szimpla Kert (Kazinczy u.
14). You can also find me at
MüPa (Komor Marcell u. 1),
the Palace of Arts, enjoying
a jazz or classical concert. It
is rated the world’s fifth best
concert hall, and the acoustics
are sensational.

From the Fisherman’s Bastion

Where do you go to escape
the heat of the city?
To the Mövenpick Ambassador
Hotel (Independence Avenue),
where they have a great pool.
Or to Kokrobite, a beach town
at a 25 minutes drive from
Accra. But I don’t go there
for the beach, because it isn’t
that great. I prefer to visit the
lovely Kokrobite Garden. It’s
a large garden with an Italian
restaurant, and you can also
spend the night there. The
owners come from Italy, so
it has an Italian feel to it: the
food is tasty, the atmosphere
is relaxed and the pizzas are
baked in an open oven.
What’s the best place to
party, or to dance?
➏ The Republic (3rd Lane) is
very popular with both expats
and Ghanaians. It is a small
bar in a narrow street in Osu.
They have live performances,
and serve cocktails made from
locally brewed liqueur as well
as Ghanaian snacks with a
modern twist, like fried yam
and chicken.
When friends come to see
you, which hotel do you
recommend?
La Villa Boutique Hotel
(F56/1/13th Lane), which is
located right in the heart
of the city. It’s a small but
beautiful hotel, and also
ideally situated. You can
relax in their cosy bar in the
beautiful garden, or eat in
their lovely Italian restaurant.

at Jackson Pollock: Blind Spots, an

series – a deliberate move from his
defining colourful ‘drip’ technique
to a new and darker ‘pour’ – was
less well known but was extremely

garden and landscape designer is

York City, and the Lurie Garden in
Chicago’s Millennium Park. Created
in 1982, Oudolf’s Hummelo garden
has undergone many changes to

Singapore
Larger than life
The Marina Bay Sands, a 2,561-room casino hotel, claims to have
the world’s largest elevated infinity swimming pool. Their rooftop
pool is on the 57th floor, and the building is sandwiched between
skyscrapers, gardens and the harbour front. So, not surprisingly,
a swim in this 150-metre-long pool comes with stunning views
over both Singapore’s skyline and its waters. As the cocktail bar,
palm tree-shaded deck chairs and restaurants are just a crawl
away, there’s no reason to get off Singapore’s coolest rooftop.

Somewhere in southern Zambia,
on the riverbank of the Chongwe,
sits the Chongwe River House.
While the place only has room

Chrono love
Men love chronographs. There’s no point in
denying it. Chronographs have an appeal to them
that watch-loving men simply cannot resist. Is
it because a ‘chrono’ is a high-tech instrument?
Measuring elapsed seconds and then counting
them mechanically is not a simple task. Or is it
something else? Maybe there are more philosophical reasons to be found.
A normal watch visualises the passing of
time. A chronograph can stop time. With the
push of a button, the hands counting time come
to a standstill and show you the time they just
‘caught’. You could say that a chronograph is an
instrument pretending to give us some control of
our existence by visualising elapsed time. It’s a
fascinating concept.
Great stories and fun facts also help get men
fired up. For instance: the chronograph is named
after the Greek chronos (‘time’) and graphô (‘I
write’). In 1822, the Parisian watchmaker Rieussec invented an instrument in a wooden box
that actually wrote elapsed time with a series of
ink dots on a paper dial. In 1862, Adolphe Nicole
of Switzerland then developed the modern-day
chronograph system with an elapsed time hand
that could be set back to zero.
Lovely anecdotes, indeed. But the love of
chronographs may be attributed to the plain fact
that they just look great – enticingly so. A watch
with buttons, as many hands as possible and
subdials is just irresistible for men with a weak
spot for metres, gauges and indicators. It may be
as simple as that.
Lucky ladies
IWC, official supplier to men, reaches
out to female watch lovers. The new
Portofino is a midsize mechanical revolution from Schaffhausen, Switzerland.
“Ladies, you ride our Harleys, smoke our
Havanas, drink our Glenmorangie. Hands off
our IWC,” was once the text of an IWC marketing campaign. But times change. With so many
watch-loving women reaching for an IWC, the
watch manufacturer from Schaffhausen decided
to launch its first collection of ladies watches.
IWC decided to revolutionise their collection
by adding two feminine Portofino models.
Brazilian Victoria’s Secret model Adriana Lima
and her colleague from the Czech Republic
Karolina Kurkova – both ‘friends of the brand’
– were a source of inspiration while bringing to
life the new Portofino. Adriana Lima sure knows
watches: “A watch is an important accessory,
especially if you don’t like to wear too much
jewellery. I think that watches reveal a lot
about your personality and I am fascinated by
how IWC timepieces seem to touch your soul
time and again and reveal yet another facet of
you. Each watch – the Aquatimer, Pilot’s Watch
or Portofino Midsize – has a profoundly strong
yet graceful presence that leaves a
genuine feeling of empowerment.”

recalls wearing the stylish Portofino during
the photo shoot in Portofino, the town on the
Amalfi coast for which the watch was named:
“My most memorable moment was simply being
in the unique and magical place of Portofino. I
felt like I was transported back in time – like a
Hollywood movie star being filmed by a director
who wasn’t only shooting fashion, but timeless,
raw photos. Working with Peter Lindbergh
is always a treat as he understands a woman’s
inner beauty.”
A long time ago, IWC placed an advertisement
in a German newspaper saying ‘IWC makes
ladies watches’. It was an April fool’s joke. The
new Portofino ladies models, however, are no
joke; they’re for real.

You are a polyglot: you speak Italian, Dutch,
English, French, a bit of Spanish and some
Chinese. Where does this language passion
come from?
My mother. Ever since I was a kid, I have loved
travelling. My mother was an English teacher
and she travelled – and still does travel – the
world: Asia, South America, the United States.
I saw her going to all these places and always
thought to myself: “One day, I will do the
same.” And I did.

a Chinese teacher to me, through a face-to-face
online class? I immediately knew it was a great
idea. Shortly after that, I quit my job and took
the plunge.
So it was just a matter of time before you
would come up with an idea like mYngle…
mYngle was born out of a personal need. In
2007, I was working as a senior manager at
eBay, but I wanted to start my own business
in China, which was a growing market, so
I decided to learn Chinese. I bought books
and CDs, went to an evening school and
took classes with a Chinese student here in
Amsterdam, but nothing seemed to work.
Was that a big step, to give up a secure job
for an uncertain future?
No. I’m a risk-taker and pretty impulsive, too.
In the 90s, I left my job at Proctor & Gamble
in Rome to go and live in Amsterdam with my
Dutch boyfriend of the time. And in 2000, I
quit my job at The Boston Consulting Group
to travel through Asia for a year.
You were your own first customer?
I was! I strongly feel that, as an entrepreneur,
you must believe in and love your product. If
you wouldn’t buy it yourself, why would
somebody else?
mYngle has started its eighth year. Looking
back, how did the company evolve?
Completely differently than I expected! Having
been a manager, I thought: “I can run a company,
I can steer a team, I can do this.” But building a
business from scratch is a different ball game.
In fact, whenever I applied the same principles
that I knew from my experience as a manager of
large companies, things went wrong. Because a
manager is used to making longterm planning >
Why not?
It wasn’t what I needed. I didn’t have the time
to take evening classes on a regular basis; I
needed lessons to be flexible and I couldn’t
find a teacher that was good enough. I thought
to myself, “There are a billion Chinese people
in China, there must be a good teacher there
for me.” That’s how the idea for mYngle came
