o t h e r social derelictions.
I t has b e e n RI'T's p o l i c y that t h e m e s
f o r o p e n p a r t i e s s u c h as t h o s e t h a t use d t o be i n t h e Residence H a l l s a n d are

seems t o b e above i t a l l . C u r r e n t s t u d e n t s
are harassed a n d p o t e n t i a l students
ignored. Krrors in paperwork occurr
r e g u l a r l y , yet s h o u l d we show r e v e r e n c e t o
t h e . A d m i n i s t r a t i v e A l l m i g h t y f o r even
a l l o w i n g us t o a t t e n d t h e i r fine p l a c e o f
learning?
P e r h a p s t h i s is o n l y t h e m i s c o n s o r t e d
o p i n i o n o f one disgusted i n d i v i d u a l , a n d
i f so, 1 a p o l o g i z e . .Still, I o f f e r t h e f o l l o w i n g
situations to d e f e n d my stand.
M y b i l l f o r W i n t e r Q u a r t e r ' s t u i t i o n was
paid, but not according to the infallible
Bursar. N o r e c o r d o f p a y m e n t e x i s t e d , a n d
t h u s I was f o u n d q u i l t y u n t i l p r o v e n
i n n o c e n t . Graciously, the payment date
was w x t e n d e d o n e week, w h i c h a t i h e t i m e ,
I w o u l d b e d r o p p e d f r o m m y classes i f t h e
p a y m e n t d i d n o t show u p . K i n d h e a r i e d l y ,
I was t o l d by t h e B u r s a r ' s o f f i c e t h a t i f a
c a n c e l l e d chec k was p r o d u c e d by t h e n , m y
account w o u l d be credited. T h i s b e i n g a
place o f h i g h e r e d u c a t i o n , I surely t h o u g h t
t h e y w o u l d realize it takes a b i t l o n g e r f o r
a check t o g o t h r o u g h t h e c l e a r i n g process.
B u t they d i d n o t .
Finally, m y p a y m e n t d i d show up, a n d t h e
o n l y e x p l a n a t i o n ! was g i v e n is t h i s : " I t
s h o u l d n ' t h a v e t a k e n so l o n g t o b e

y o u v e r y m u c h , a n d t h e week o f h e l l t h a t

S e c o n d l y , m y sister, w h o is n o w a h i g h
school senior, wrote to R I T i n hopes o f
receiving an application f o r enrollment.
H e r h o p e s d i m i n i s h e d o f ever r e c e i v i n g
o n e a f t e r w a i t i n g o v e r t h r e e weeks, so I
called admissions personally and made a
firm r e q u e s t t h a t it b e sent. H o p e f u l l y
w i m t w i l l be made to d o this, b u t I d o u b t
she w i l l a t t e n d here. A f t e r t h e screw u p
w i t h m y t u i t i o n a n d h e r a p p l i c a t i o n she
w i l l probably decide to go to a college
where the o n l y things to w o r r y about are
grades a n d an e d u c a i t o n .

i n s t i t u t e , a n d I ask y o u , w h a t w i l l b e d o n e
to better the situation? I w i l l be anxiously

Fischer vs Fiske
O n O c t o b e r 'M), 1987, M r . Fiske w r o t e what
I c a n o n l y d e s c r i b e as a " g r i p e c o l u m n " i n
the Reprofile. B o t h Mr. Fischer a n d I
responded independently, expressing o u r
d i s l i k e t o Mr. Fiske's a r t i c l e Mr. Fiske chose
to express h i s o p i n n i o n , a n d so d i d I. I f m y
l e t t e r was a " r e a c t i o n " t o h i s s t a t e m e n t s ,
t h e n I c a n o n l y c o n s i d e r his a r i g i n a l a r t i c l e
to be n o t h i n g m o r e t h a n a n e m o t i o n a l
outburst.
M r . F i s k e c a n n o t u n d e r s t a n d w h y I feel
i n s u l t e d . I f h e w o u l d take t h e t i m e t o
reread my letter he w u o l d f i n d that I made
s p e c i f i c r e f e r e n c e t o h i s use o f t h e t e r m
" m o n e y - g r u b b i n g " to describe a perfectly
l e g i t i m a t e p r o f e s s i o n . I f M r . Fiske c a n n o t
understand why I would f i n d that
offensive, than I can o n l y describe his
a t t i t u d e as n o t h i n g less t h a n c a l l o u s .
M y i n t r o d u c t i o n o f F i n a n c i a l A i d wa s i n
r e s p o n s e t o h i s e x p r e s i o n o f d i s m a y at h i s
friend's predicament. His f r i e n d w o u l d n o

installed
approximately thirty brand-new Sun
m o n o c h r o m e w o r k s t a t i o n s i n the first-year
p r o g r a m m i n g lab. W h e r e d i d they get
t h i r t y new w o r k s t a t i o n s ? It c e r t a i n l y wasn't
Santa Claus. A l t h o u g h the b r i g h t r e d bows
a d o r n i n g each o f the workstations m i g h t
suggest they w e r e g i f t s , i n d e e d they w e r e
n o t . It t o o k a l m o s t a year a n d a h a l f of
w r i t i n g grant proposals, negotiations a n d
p l a i n o l d h a r d w o r k t o get t h e newh a r d w a r e . I t s h o u l d also he n o t e d t h a t a

w o r k s t a t i o n s have been desperately
n e e d e d f o r a l m o s t t h r e e years. The f o r m e r
d e a n o f t h e C o l l e g e of A p p l i e d S c i e n c e
a n d fechnologv, Dennis Nystrom, recently
r e v e a l e d that at his w e l c o m i n g s p e e c h t o
i n c o m i n g i i e s h m e n a n d t r a n s f e r students,
he w o u l d alwavs stiess R I f ' s c o m m i t m e n t
t o prov i d i n g state-of-the-art f a c i l i t i e s . Last
year he c o u l d n o t h o n e s t l y m a k e that boast
a b o u t C o m p u t e r Science. F o r t u n a t e l y , that
boast is h a c k , a n d l o u d e r t h a n ever.
H o w e v e r , o n c e y o u l o o k past t h e
g l i s t e n i n g new m a c h i t i e s a n d walk f u r t h e r
o n d o w n t h e hallwav. v o u w i l l f i n d t h e
second- a n d tliitd-year students in the Pro
lab m c t h o d i c a l l v . p l o d d i n g awav o n a t i m e s h a r e d system, u s i n g s o m e not-so-state-ofthe-art t e r m i n a l s . W h a t a b o u t these
s t u d e n t s ? f h e y have p a i d t h e i r d u e s .
L ' n d e r s t a n d a h l y , m a n y of t h e m a r e n ' t
e x c i t e d by t h e n e w d e v e l o p m e n t s because
they a r e n ' t d i r e c t l y b e n e f i t t i n g f r o m t h e
u pgiade.
.At o n e level, it c a n he a r g u e d that t i o
m a t t e r how h a r d v o u t r v v o u can't satisfv
e v e r y o n e . S p e c i f i c a l l y , even t h o u g h t h e
f a c u l t y a n d a d m i n i s t r a t i o n have b r o k e n
t h e i r hacks t o get n e w e q u i p m e n t , t h e
u p p e r - c l a s s m e n are f e e l i n g left o u t . A r e
thev b e i n g unrealistic a n d asking f o r t o o
m u c h ? The a n s w e r is n o t s i m p l e , f he kev
t o u p g r a d i n g t h e u p p e r class lab f a c i l i t i e s
lies w i t h t h e s t u d e n t s t h e m s e l v e s . I f t h e y
m a k e e n o u g h noise, t h e chances are m u c h
b e t t e r that t h e i r p r o b l e m s w ill be h e a r d hv
the u p p e r a d m i n i s t r a t i o n a n d s o m e t h i n g
w i l l be d o n e a b o u t it. B u t t h i s takes t i m e .
A n d s o m e s t u d e n t s may feel t h a t it's n o t
w o r t h p u t t i n g e f f o r t i n t o l o h h v i n g f o r new
e q u i p m e n t because they w i l l g r a d u a t e
b e f o r e thev c a n b e n e f i t . N e v e r t h e l e s s ,
C o m p u t e r S c i e n c e is a b i g d e p a r t m e n t
w i t h o v e r (>()() s t u d e n t s , f h e c h a n c e s a r e
f a v o r a b l e that t h e r e are e n o u g h s t u d e n t s

The
current
message f r o m
the
d e p a r t m e n t is t h a t they are g e n u i n e l y
interested in p u t t i n g workstations in the
P r o l a b b u t t h e r e is j u s t n o m o r e m o n e y .
T h e d e p a r t m e n t holds an o p e n meeting
for students, faculty a n d a d m i n i s t r a t i o n in
C o m p u t e r S c i e n c e each q u a r t e r . A f t e r t h e
last m e e t i n g , t h i s r e p o r t e r s p o k e w i t h
Evelyn Rozanski c o n c e r n i n g a n u m b e r o f
t o p i c s t h a t c a m e u p at t h e m e e t i n g . She
e n c o u r a g e d s t u d e n t s t o get t o g e t h e r a n d
w o r k w i t h the d e p a r t m e n t to speed the
process o f r e f i t t i n g t h e P r o lab. M o s t
m o n i e s f o r b u y i n g new e q u i p m e n t c o m e
f r o m g r a n t s . S h e s a i d t h a t j u s t t h e process
o f w r i t i n g a p r o p o s a l f o r a g r a n t c a n take
weeks, a n d t h e n o n c e t h e p r o p o s a l is sent
o u t , m o n t h s c a n go by b e f o r e y o u k n o w if
any p o r t i o n of t h e p r o p o s a l has b e e n
accepted.
A s w i t h a n y d e p a r t m e n t at R I T ,
C o m p u t e r S c i e n c e has it's s h a r e o f
p r o b l e m s . B u t t h e last year has seen a
n u m b e r of s i g n i f i c a n t i m p r o v e m e n t s . O f
course, the new w o r k s t a t i o n s t o p the list,
b u t t h e r e have b e e n n e w courses, n e w
c o n c e n t r a t i o n s , new f a c u l t y , a n d a well-
written a n d extremely useful academic
a d v i s i n g h a n d b o o k . C o m p u t e r S c i e n c e at
R I T has always e n j o y e d a great r e p u t a t i o n
w o r l d w i d e , a n d t h e r e is n o d o u b t t h a t
w h e n y o u p u t it all t o g e t h e r , R I T has o n e
o f t h e best u n d e r g r a d u a t e p r o g r a m s i n t h e
c o u n t r y . B u t t h e r e a r e s o m e lessons t h a t
have b e e n l e a r n e d i n p r e v i o u s years t h a t
m u s t n o t get lost i n a l l t h e b a c k s l a p p i n g
a n d h a n d s h a k i n g . T h e b o t t o m l i n e is t h a t
t h e s t u d e n t is t h e a l l - e n c o m p a s s i n g
p r i o r i t y . H o p ) e f u l l y the l i g h t o f t h e S u n w i l l
make l e a r n i n g m o r e enjoyable, but not
b l i n d us f r o m o u r f a u l t s .

Hispanic Student Association Gains Ciub Status
O n I h u r s d a y , N o v e m b e r .5 o f last year, t h e
B l a c k Awareness C o o r d i n a t i n g C o m m i t t e e
a n d its m e m b e r s c o n v e n e d f o r w h a t m o s t
t h o u g h t w o u l d be a r o u t i n e weekly
m e e t i n g . H o w e v e r , b e f o r e t h e start o f t h e
p r o c e e d i n g s a n d m u c h to everyone's
surprise, a g r o u p o f Hispanic students
s a u n t e r e d very casually i n t o the r o o m .
T h e y made almost n o noise but c a p t u r e d
everyone's a t t e n t i o n . T h i s was t h e first t i m e
that such a large n u m b e r o f H i s p a n i c
s t u d e n t s ( i f a n y n u m b e r at a l l ) h a d
a t t e n d e d o n e o f the meetings this school
year, f h e i r p u r p o s e was s i m p l e : t o secede
f r o m t h e BACC: a n d g a i n c l u b status.
H S A stands f o r H i s p a n i c S t u d e n t
A s s o c i a t i o n . I t is o n l y t w o y e a r s i n
e x i s t e n c e b u t t e n years i n f o r m i n g . U n t i l
r e c e n t l y all t h e r e p r e s e n t a t i o n a n d a f f a i r s
o f t h e g r o u p was c h a n n e l e d t h r o u g h
BACC:, w h i c h is t h e c h i e f g o v e r n i n g b o d y
for m i n o r i t y students o n campus. HSA, in
fact, was p a r t o f B A C C as was s t i p u l a t e d i n
t h e c o n s t i t u t i u o n of t h a t g o v e r n m e n t . Yet
t h e past has s h o w n t h e H i s p a n i c society t o
have l i t t l e t o d o w i t h a c t i v i t i e s o f B A C C .
I t was r a r e t h a t t h e y w o u l d s h o w u p t o
weekly g o v e r n m e n t a l meetings to voice
their concerns a n d interest. I n d e e d many
s t u d e n t s . B l a c k a n d H i s p a n i c alike, h a d n o
i d e a t h a t B A C C r e p r e s e n t e d H S A at a l l .
For the H i s p a n i c s t u d e n t organiz.ation to
g a i n c l u b status m e a n t t h a t it w o u l d b e
r e c o g n i z e d as s u c h b y t h e S t u d e n t
D i r e c t o r a t e . A c c o r d i n g l y it c a n have n o
p o l i t i c a l ties w i t h a p a r e n t organiz.ation o r
student g o v e r n m e n t o n campus. HSA first
w e n t b e f o r e B A C C a n d t h e n S D t o state
their purposes.
T h e Thursday m e e t i n g o f the BACC
was m e a n t t o f o r m a l l y vote t h e H S A o u t o f
t h e g o v e r m e n t c o n s t i t u t i o n . T h e r e arose
a lot o f questions f r o m the members
prolonging
the
proceedings.

reasons f o r t h e move. .After s o m e d e b a t e
a n d c l e a r i n g away o f m i s c o n c e p t i o n s , it
was finally d e c i d e d t o m a k e t h e m i n o r
adjustments to the BACC c o n s t i t u t i o n ,
o m i t t i n g HSA f r o m being represented.
R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s of t h e c l u b e m p h a s i z e d
t h a t t h e m o v e was n o t a s p l i t b e t w e e n
B A C C a n d H S A , m e a n i n g that even t h o u g h
they were n o w separate g r o u p s , the two
organiz.ations w i l l still w o r k together.
A m a j o r c o n c e r n o f B A C C was t h e i r
o w n status q u o o n c e t h e y n o l o n g e r
represented the H i s p a n i c group, f h e y
w e r e f o r m a l l y r e c o g n i z e d as a " M i n o r i t y
student government" which
would
e n c o m p a s s a great d e a l m o r e R f f s t u d e n t s
besides blacks. N o w t h a t t h e g o v e r m e n t is
p r i m a r i l y f o r b l a c k s t u d e n t s w i l l t h e r e be
any r e d u c t i o n o f f u n d s o r representative
power o n the Student Directorate for
BACC? fhese concerns were f u r t h e r
e n h a n c e d by t h e e l i m i n a t i o n o f t h e B l a c k
H i s p a n i c student affairs p o s i t i o n o n the
SD b o a r d .
A m e e t i n g was h e l d b e t w e e n L a r r y
.Mosle, t h e p r e s i d e n t o f SD, B r u c e B o o n e ,
the
president
of
BACC,
and
R e p r e s e n t a t i v e s o f H S A t o discuss c e r t a i n
concerns. L a r r y wanted to c o n f i r m that
HSA
no
longer
wanted
BACC
r e p r e s e n t a t i o n a n d to m a k e sure that it was
a " r e s p e c t f u l s e p a r a t i o n " . B r u c e also
wanted the u n d e r s t a n d i n g that the
s e p a r a t i o n was p o s i t i v e a n d t h a t H S A
w o u l d be r e s p e c t e d as a n i n d i v i d u a l c l u b .
Just l i k e t h e B A C C , H S A w a n t e d t o be sure
that the move w o u l d n o t cause any
reduction in their representation, f u n d i n g
o r v o i c e B o t h g r o u p s were e q u a l l y assured.
M a n y |>eople are very s u p p o r t i v e o f the
secession. B r u c e f o r o n e t h i n k s it is " a
p o s i t i v e step i n m e e t i n g t h e needs o f b l a c k
s t u d e n t s . " H e feels it w o u l d b e b e n e f i c i a l
t o a l l e t h n i c g r o u p s if " t h e S t u d e n t
D i r e c t o r a t e has a b e t t e r r e c o g n i t o n o f
m i n o r i t i e s as i n d i v i d u a l races." f his m e a n s
i f we c a n get s t u d e n t s , e s p e c i a l l y c a m p u s
m i n o r i t i e s , to emphasize t h e i r e t h n i c
b a c k g r o u n d m o r e , it w i l l e n h a n c e t h e
o v e r a l l awareness o f R I T o f a l l t h e e x i s t i n g
cultures and backgrounds on campus.
" T h i s w o u l d be a s i g n i f i c a n t step", says
B r u c e , " i n f i g h t i n g d o w n all t h e racist a n d
i g n o r a n t q u e s t i o n s i n R I T society."
T h e m o v e t o c l u b status also solves all t h e
internal problems the BACC had w i t h
r e p r e s e n t i n g the Hispanics. T h e idea o f
H i s p a n i c s s e c e d i n g is n o t h i n g new. S i n e
1977, t h e r e w e r e c o n f l i c t s w i t h t h e
H i s p a n i c g r o u p not h a v i n g satisfactory
r e p r e s e n t a t i o n . O n e r e a s o n was t h e fact
that the B A C C c o n s t i t u t i o n allowed o n l y
f o r r e p r e s e n t a t o n o f U.S. H i s p a n i c s .
Tentative s o l u t i o n s were p u t i n t o effect,
such as t h e B A C C executive b o a r d p o s i t i o n
of Hispanic Affairs Coordinator, held
p r e v i o u s l y by LaTanya Wallace. T h i s l e d t o
t h e f o r m a t i o n first o f S A L S A ( S p a n i s h a n d
Latin Student Affairs), which then
c h a n g e d its n a m e t w o years ago t o
Hispanic Student Affairs.
H S A is w e l l o r g a n i z e d t h i s y e a r ,
a c c o r d i n g to club president H e r a l d o
T o r r e s , a t h i r d year H o t e l a n d R e s o r t

Wlicn Mark and I decided to spend
the weekend at his mother s house,
I never imagined I would he walking
into a mouses nightmare. There were
cats e\ ervw'here.
C^at plaques, cat statues, cat clocks,
even a eat mat. I couldn't begin to duplicate her collection o f kitty litter i f I spent
a year at a garage sale. Conspicuously
absent, however, was a real eat. Strange,
I thought, and began to fear that a
w eekend w ith cat woman could be a
lot less than purr-feet.

Rut then she came home, and
Mark intrtxlueed her. She w as
dressed surprisingly well—no
leopard pants. In fact, you
could say she was the cat s meow;
but Id rather not.

I could relate to. Then she brought it
out in the most beautiful, distinctly
