AS ITS NEW PRESIDENT & CEO
We are delighted to announce that Rachel S. Moore, an accomplished leader in the
performing arts, has been named president and CEO of The Music Center. Ms. Moore
joins The Music Center from American Ballet Theatre (ABT), where she served as CEO
since 2012 and as its executive director since 2004. After an extensive international
search, Ms. Moore was selected for her proven management and strategic skills,
along with her passion for the arts.
Ms. Moore comes from the performing
arts, having danced with ABT as a
member of its corps de ballet 1984-1988.
She has been credited with transforming
ABT’s brand during which ABT was
recognized by the United States Congress
as “America’s National Ballet Company”
in 2005. In addition, she expanded the
Company’s national presence with a
breakthrough bi-coastal initiative with
the Segerstrom Center for the Performing
Arts in California; developed strategic copresenting partnerships with The Music
Center and the Chicago Auditorium
Theater; developed and launched the
groundbreaking Project Plié program
to increase diversity in professional
ballet; expanded the ABT Jacqueline
Kennedy Onassis School by significantly
increasing enrollment, implementing a
“Healthy Dancer” initiative and building
a pipeline for students from the school in
the professional company; and created
a worldwide teacher training and
certification program for ballet teachers.
Prior to ABT, Ms. Moore held senior
positions in dance and arts
administration, including director of
Boston Ballet’s Center for Dance
Education (2001-2004), North
America’s largest professional ballet
school; executive director for Boston
classical music school Project Step
(1998-2001); managing director for
Ballet Theatre of Boston (1998);
director of the Institute for Community
Development and the Arts/National
Assembly of Local Arts Agencies
(1995-1997); and development officer
for the National Cultural Alliance
(1994-1995). She has served as
adjunct faculty for the Graduate
Program in Arts Administration for
both Columbia University and Boston
University, and in the dance
department of Emerson College.
The Music Center’s Board Chair Lisa
Specht said Ms. Moore is highly
qualified to lead The Music Center.
“She not only has many years of
experience in the performing arts,
but has the energy, drive and
creativity so important to running a
performing arts center of the caliber
of The Music Center.”
Accepting her new appointment, Ms.
Moore said, “This is an exciting time
for performing arts institutions, and
The Music Center has the opportunity
to be a leader by establishing itself
as the premiere destination in the
Western United States for world-class,
highly innovative experiences in the
performing arts that are also sensitive
to the needs and interests of a broader
audience. I am honored to serve the
County of Los Angeles as The Music
Center’s next president and CEO.”
Please join us in
welcoming Rachel S. Moore
to The Music Center!

PROGRAMMING NOTE
BalletNow truly began over three years ago with an inspiring
meeting between myself, Roberto Bolle and Emanuela Bolle, who
have been touring ballet offerings throughout Europe for years.
With the subsequent enthusiasm and drive of co-producer Richard
Kielar and Herman Cornejo, the venture was born. Both Roberto and
Herman are beloved ballet stars and continue to tour the world as
principals with American Ballet Theatre as well as their many guest
appearances, and both are also motivated by collaboration and a
creative challenge.
BalletNow celebrates the hybridity apparent in so much of the dance world today, along with the
diversity of ideas and approaches that surface when dancers guest with other companies and
artists. Ballet enthusiasts will especially appreciate the exceptional talent featured in BalletNow
as the artists, many of whom are partnering across geographies for the first time, push the
boundaries of technique and interpretation as they perform contemporary works alongside
the traditional. BalletNow is an extraordinary project and I am grateful to our co-producers,
Roberto, Herman and the entire Music Center team, especially, Michael Solomon, for all of the
effort to bring to life this first-time partnership featuring three unique programs, 18 dancers
from 12 different countries, and multiple premieres.
Also this month, we introduce a new series, Moves After Dark, which will highlight the work of
LA’s impressive artists in non-traditional performance spaces. This inaugural season we have the
honor to work with four inspiring and nationally touring artists/companies—Ana María Alvarez
(Artistic Director of Contra Tiempo), and companies Ate9, BODYTRAFFIC and Lula Washington
Dance Theatre. We hope you join us as we embark on this new endeavor, and also return to enjoy
Summer @ The Music Center with great events and food each Friday through August as well as
our annual National Dance Day, the official West Coast celebration, on Saturday, July 25. Please
visit the website for more information and to continue your dance journey.
As we conclude the season, I want to share on behalf of The Music Center our sincere appreciation
of Center Dance Arts for their vision and commitment to support a series that would inspire and
engage all ages through internationally renowned ballet and contemporary dance presentations.
With Glorya Kaufman’s significant gift and additional new donors, the series has grown its distinct
offerings, commissioning of new masterworks, and now provides more learning opportunities for
both adults and children. Thank you as well to our corporate partners, board of directors and the
ever-growing subscribers. Your support allows us to take creative risks, present once in a lifetime
experiences, feature the world’s most respected artists and transform lives.
It has been an honor and true privilege for me to have played a role in this phenomenal series
for close to 11 years.
Enjoy the Performance,
Renae Williams Niles

WITH APPRECIATION
LIZ LEVITT HIRSCH
A LIFE IN THE ARTS
A longtime member of The Music Center
family, Liz Levitt Hirsch is well known for
her devotion to the arts as a supporter,
volunteer, and advocate. Despite her
busy schedule as chair of Levitt Pavilions,
the national network of outdoor venues
presenting free concerts, she always
makes time to stay involved at The Music
Center. For more than 30 years, she
has shared her infectious enthusiasm
at events, volunteer meetings, and
performances at all our venues.
A founding member of the Center Dance Arts Board, Liz has
helped build a strong network of supporters to help The
Music Center attract the best internationally-acclaimed
dance companies to our stages. “What really drove me to The
Music Center for performances was The Joffrey Ballet. I loved
the Joffrey and was so excited to be able to see them in Los
Angeles. Then I volunteered in 1985 for the Mercado fundraiser
at The Music Center. That was the most vivid experience, and
after that I was invited to the board of The Los Angeles Master
Chorale, where I chaired fundraisers for 10 years.”
Liz is also a lead supporter and advocate for Spotlight. “Spotlight
is an exceptional arts education program The Music Center
should be very proud of. It’s inspiring to see the next generation
of artists coming up. It’s just heartwarming to learn all the stories
of kids, teaching them to audition and fostering their talent. It’s
so much more than a competition. We’re part of their legacy.”
Liz’s love for the arts started early. “I was fortunate because
my mother brought me to ballet, opera, youth symphony,
films, concerts. We lived half a block from the Metropolitan
Museum of Art, so we were always at the museum.” As a
child, she had piano lessons and listened to classical and pop
Charly Emery, Liz Levitt Hirsch, Julie McDonald and Nancy Gregory
records, memorizing A and B sides. Liz credits her parents with
modeling the importance of supporting the arts.
When asked why she’s involved at The Music Center, Liz doesn’t
hesitate. “I’m very proud of our city, and The Music Center is
one of our icons. Culturally, it’s particularly exciting for me
with the dance series. I’m also incredibly proud of Walt Disney
Concert Hall. I tell everyone to visit because it’s so special. I’m
also proud that The Music Center has partnered with Grand
Park. I think that was important and needed for us to open up
space to the public. We have a cultural standard to uphold, but
it’s very important to come down off the hill. And I’ve been very
happy about the events on the plaza that are free to the public.
I’m proud of its growing outreach to various populations and I
hope to see much more of that.”
She ends her explanation on a personal note by saying, “The
arts connect us – I have made so many friends at The Music
Center who love music and dance like I do. Having grown up in
New York, I was able to build a foundation for an engaged life
in Los Angeles through my involvement at The Music Center.
It facilitated my establishing roots and shaping my life in
Southern California. This is deeply personal and true.”
