FAUX REAL WITH FAUXNIQUE
An evening with San Francisco’s Fauxnique, alter ego of Monique Jenkinson,
that proves that a woman can be a drag queen! Though women have
inspired generations of males to transgress and entertain, drag is the
ultimate boys’ club. A woman who is a drag queen? I don’t get it. Does
she just … feel that way? Fauxnique reaches into her drag bag for some
answers to this vexing question. Expect high heel stunts, hero worship
and femme feminism.

SEPTEMBER 2014
WELCOME
Hello, did everyone have a nice August holiday? We have some great shows coming up this month at Hackney Attic to keep the summer vibe going. To start off the
month we’re excited to be welcoming Fauxnique, who will be flying over from
San Francisco for a unique one-off London event on 2 September. Fauxnique cut
her performance teeth at SF’s infamous Trannyshack night club and with her show
Faux Real she will be demonstrating that it is possible for a woman to become a
drag queen! Also at the start of the month we have Comedy in the Attic when we
will bring you top names in alternative comedy, including headliner Alfie Brown,
Luke Graves and MC from off the telly, Joey Page.
If you’re looking for something a little more highbrow, we have a fantastic bill of
spoken word and poetry on the second week of the month. On Monday 8th, Spark
London will be sharing stories on the topic of work and our relationship with it. You
can come along and listen or, if you’d like to, you can share your own true tales.
Also this week we have a double-bill of poetry with Never Mind the Full Stops, the
panel show were two teams compete with couplets and score with sonnets to see
who will make victory from their verse; and Stand Up and Slam, the spoken word
fight night where acts from the worlds of poetry and comedy go head-to -head to
decide which is the best art form.
We have our regular You’re Gonna Need a Bigger Boat film quiz on 16th September and then anarchic cabaret madness dominates the middle of the month when
Baby Lame takes over for a punk-horror-drag night of song, dance, film and performance in her brand new ‘one-girl’ show, Don’t Call it a Comeback. This is followed by Amy Grimehouse: Cher Night which includes an all-action screening of
Burlesque so you can slut-drop when Xtina comes on screen, scream when Cher
opens her plastic mouth, and laugh along with the absurdity of it all.
We end the month on a musical vibe when the London African Music Festival
grooves into both the Attic and our Upstairs at the Ritzy venue, bringing you a fusion of sounds which will transport you from East London into a world of infectious
beats and traditional African vibes. Enjoy!
Musicians / artists / promoters: If you’d like to play here or get involved
in anyway. Send us some links, CDs, pictures or ideas… we love hearing from
creative folk. [email protected] (Also use for mailing list request)
