Community Association
Parkland Hall Welcomes New and Returning Tenants
The Parkland Community Association is pleased to
provide rental space this autumn to a diverse group of
renters, offering courses and activities for almost everyone. We are especially pleased to welcome the following
new groups:
•Zumba!: Let the world music rhythms and Latin inspired
choreography of Zumba! bring a sexy and sassy element
to your workout. Join instructor Lindsay Brandon for an
invigorating class, 8:00 to 9:00 PM, Monday nights. Classes begin October 3rd. Contact Lindsay at 403 454-8328.
•Parkland Cubs: Cubs have been missing from the Parkland scene for the last couple of years but return this
fall to share the Hall with Beavers Monday nights from
6:30 – 8:00 PM. For more information on this program,
please contact Ian and Cindy Ross at 403 720-4072.
Welcome back to our returning groups. A lively bunch,
the Parkland Beavers return to the Hall Monday nights.
Tuesday evenings are busy with Sparks, Brownies and
Guides, followed by yoga with Jane Sponiar. Both Jane
and the Parkland Guide group have been offering programs at our Hall for many years, and we are pleased
to welcome them back for another year. Instruction in
Tai Chi is given Wednesday nights by the Taoist Tai Chi
Society. This non-profit group promotes good health
for the body and mind through a series of slow and
graceful movements. The Japanese martial art of karate
is taught Wednesday and Thursday nights by Calgary
Kyokushin Karate. Kyokushin promises great family fun,
and “everyone breaks boards”. Rounding out the week
(or beginning it), Hope for the Perishing Church reaches
out to the community with their enthusiastic brand of
Christianity. On the field behind the Hall, you will often
see Colts Football practicing under the rink lights. Welcome to our Hall – new and returning tenants and users.
Children’s Halloween Party
Please help!
The Children’s Halloween Party is a tradition in Parkland,
and one that local kids look forward to as part of their
Halloween celebrations. Over the past two years, this
party has grown bigger and better, with dramatic decorations and lots of “creepy” activities and crafts. Many of
the improvements kids have enjoyed have been due to
the talents of Kari Willcocks. Unfortunately for us, Kari
IMAGINE YOUR POSSIBILITIES
will be unable to help out this year. And with Barb – the
2010 Witch and mini pumpkin aficionado - expecting a
baby this September (Congratulations Barb!), the committee is now done to just one, me, and I need help!
The Halloween Party Committee (me) is looking for
individuals – teens or adults – with imagination and
enthusiasm, and about 30 hours to donate, to organize
this event for 2011. If you can help, please, please email
me at [email protected] or phone 403- 278-5330.

COMMUNITY
LIAISON OFFICER
Hello Parkland Residents!
September is here – school is in!! As I mentioned in the
August newsletter, our Block Watch program has had
several recent resignations of Captains and Coordinators.
WE NEED RESIDENTS TO COME OUT AND VOLUNTEER!!
Please.
I personally have received phone calls over the summer
of break-ins and thefts from vehicles. Our community
doesn’t normally have a lot of crime (I think in part to
Block Watch) but we are not precluded from crime either.
It happens…but we are fortunate. As our stats show
every month, crime is low in our community.
We can’t stress the importance of having an active
Block Watch program in Parkland. It keeps our community safer and friendlier…know your neighbours! If you
don’t, this is a fantastic way to meet them.
Here’s some helpful information from our local Police,
CLO, Cst McCaughtrie:
Top 10 Tips for a Safe Calgary
1. Keep your garage doors closed – don’t make it easy
for a passersby to snatch a bicycle or garden tool.
2. Close your windows at night, even if it’s hot (use a fan
or portable air conditioner if it’s too hot to sleep). Open
windows, even on the second floor, leave you vulnerable to break-ins.
3. Lock your doors and windows when you’re in your
yard. Unlocked front doors provide easy entry to
thieves if you’re in the backyard, and vice versa.
4. Know where your children are. Establish rules about
where they’re allowed – and not allowed – to go. Keep
an age-appropriate eye on them; older children who
are out of sight should check in with you regularly. If
they miss a check-in, either they need you or you need
to know what they’re doing.
5. If you’re going on vacation, make arrangements for
your home to look lived in; cancel newspapers and mail
deliveries, have the lawn mowed and the garbage put
out (and bins put away), have neighbours park in your
driveway if possible and set lights and radios on timers.
6. Roll up your vehicle windows and lock your doors
when you park. Yes, it will be hot when you get back
inside, but a locked vehicle is far less likely to be broken
into or stolen while you’re away from it.
7. Never leave children or pets unattended in vehicles.
This is illegal and could be potentially fatal. A vehicle
interior heats up dangerously quickly in the summer, so
never leave your loved ones in the car.
8. Keep an eye on your neighborhood, including pocket
parks and playgrounds. Are they being used for their
intended purpose, or are they becoming a source of
parties late at night or criminal activity? Report nonemergency problems to the Calgary Police Service at
403-266-1234.
9. Watch for the telltale signs of graffiti vandals. If you
spot spray-painted or etched graffiti, remember "Record,
Report and Remove." Record by taking pictures of the
damage, report it by writing the date, time and location on the back of the photo, signing it and dropping
it off at the nearest district office or emailing it to cps
[email protected] (you can also call 9-1-1 to report
graffiti vandalism in progress or 403-266-1234 to report
graffiti damage). Visit www.calgary.ca for clean-up tips.
10. Learn to recognize a marijuana grow-op house
through signs such as: blacked out windows; people
driving into the garage and closing the doors before
leaving the vehicle; people continually bringing items
concealed in garbage bags in and out; minimal furniture on move-in; minimal garbage disposal; yards not
maintained; construction sounds with no visible development; humming sounds; “skunky, ” mothball, air
freshener or fabric softener odours; tampered electrical meters; and condensation or wet spots on home
exteriors. Call police at 403-266-1234 to report your
concerns.
For more information about staying safe in your community, please call the District 8 Office or contact your
Community Liaison Officer Cst. Ian McCaughtrie at
403-567-6800.
Please feel free to call me any time to talk about becoming a volunteer in your community!

SCHOOLS… SCHOOLS…SCHOOLS…
News From
Prince of Wales
School
Our artist-in-residence next school year will be Sandi
Greene, a visual artist and photographer. The entire
school will also enjoy a lengthy gymnastics unit, and, as
always, numerous field trips and special guest presentations will take place that will expose students to new
experiences and ideas.
Students at Prince of Wales have an opportunity to
participate in various clubs throughout the school year:
junior and senior choir, handbells, hiphop dance, fit
kids, lego club, etiquette club and strategic games club.
As part of an ecology movement, we plan to move to
electronic agendas to save a few trees. Prince of Wales
school community thrives on its strong base of parent
volunteers. We also welcome community volunteers
to help us. Tutors are always needed to assist students
with reading, math and fine motor strengthening.
Come share your interest with some awesome students.
Prince of Wales is a Calgary Reads School.
At Prince of Wales, we empower learners!
Sam Livingston School
Bienvenue! We’re ready for another enriching school
year at Sam Livingston School! Students are back to
school on Thursday September 1st at a new start time
with bussing beginning this day for Gr. 1-4 students.
Kindergarten bussing will begin on Tuesday, September
6 after staggered entry days. Please note that school
will begin at 8:09am and end at 2:36pm. Kindergarten
hours are 8:09am until 10:47am for morning students
and 11:58am until 2:36pm for afternoon students. Bus
schedules and transportation information will be available in the school office as of Monday August 29 or online at http://www.cbe.ab.ca/transportation/alternative.
asp. School calendars (created by the School Council)
will be available for sale on the first day of school, and
have a great deal of information for families for just
$6.00.
As many of you may have noticed, the traffic zones
around our school have undergone some positive
changes. Extra striping over the crosswalks will hopefully draw drivers’ attention to this busy intersection,
and a new School Zone has been added to encompass
the intersection involving Lake Bonavista Drive and
Bonaventure Drive. The maximum speed of 30km starts
at 7:30am. Please be aware that it is illegal to park in bus
zones, crosswalks, U-turn at posted intersections, and
jaywalk. Our students’ safety is of utmost importance,
and setting a good example for our young children is
something we all strive to do.

Sitting
Registry
The House Sitting Registry matches home owners looking
for a house sitter with those wishing to offer house sitting
services. This is a great job for a teen, with some parental
supervision or a home owner wishing to exchange with
another. House sitting duties could include: emptying
the mail box, picking up the paper, clearing away
flyers, watering plants and generally keeping an eye on
things. All service arrangements and remuneration are
determined by the owner and house sitter.
If you would like to join the Tot Time group we
meet every Wednesday from 9:00 am - 11:00 am
downstairs in the Multi Purpose room at the Deer Run
Community Centre. Caregivers and child/children
ages 0-6 yrs old are all welcome. Children will have
fun playing, running, make seasonal crafts and
socializing. Caregivers could enjoy a cup of coffee
and fun and friendly conversation. Tot Time is a
great place for both Caregiver and child to make new
friendships. Hope to see you there!
For more information please contact deerruntottime@
gmail.com, facebook Deer Run Tot Time or call the
Community Centre at 403-278-3117.
This registry service is free of charge and only available
to Parkland residences. To have your name included in

SUMMERFEST 20111
The 2011 Parkland Summerfest has concluded and was
a great success. On behalf of the Board of Directors at
Park 96, I wish to extend my sincere thanks to all the
14
organizers, volunteers, sponsors, park staff and residents of Parkland.
The festival was made possible by many wonderful
people coming together to give of their time, expertise,
financial generosity and support for this community
event. As a community, we were able to gather and enjoy a weekend filled with family-focused events that
allowed us the opportunity to spend time with our
neighbours, families and friends. A spectacular musical
line up including Colin James created the backdrop for
what was certainly a well-attended event by our residents. The 2011 Summerfest was about our community
and has proven to be a financial benefit for our facility.
Thanks again to everyone who helped make this year’s
events such a success.
Merlin Doucette, President
SUMMER PROGRAMS FOR KIDS
Our summer programs for kids are over for 2011 – all
were successful and fun for the kids! Mother Nature was
pretty good and did not present many issues with rain.
Park 96 will be looking at various camps for the 2012
summer and will post information on the website in
Spring 2012.
Should there be camps that you feel could be fun and
affordable, please email the Park 96 office at park96@
telus.net.
PARK 96 GOES CASHLESS
Just a friendly reminder that Park 96 will no longer
take cash for annual fees, programs, rentals and so on.
The office will accept cheque, Visa, MasterCard and is
looking at possibly offering Amex.
GENERAL PARK USE
If you plan to bring more than 10 people to your Park
for a gathering, it is necessary to advise the office. We
want to ensure the Park is being used by current Park
96 members and their invited guests as well as to
avoid overbooking if there are several requests to use
the facilities on a particular day. This guideline applies
to all outdoor recreational venues. There is no charge to
use our recreational facilities, but please call ahead to
book in your group. Park 96 members must remain onsite at all times when bringing guests into the Park. Do
not give your Park 96 access card to your guests - if this
comes to our attention, the card will be confiscated and

member privileges suspended. Remember - our group
limit is 100; we are unable to accept bookings for groups
larger than that.
FACILITY RENTALS
In order to rent either the basement or the cookhouse,
contact the Park office by phone or email to inquire
about availability. Rental rates are as follows:

Park operating hours.
• $150.00 flat fee plus GST for a rental that ends outside
of Park operating hours, with access at 5:00 pm.

apply only to the basement and do not include access
to outside Park 96 areas after Park operating hours.
Cookhouse:

be within Park operating hours.
Once Park 96 membership and facility availability is
confirmed, an agreement is prepared. The agreement

to the event, as indicated on the agreement.
PARK 96 ANNUAL FEE
Annual fees for Park 96 are due and payable on January
1st of each year; the annual fee is $150.00 (including GST).

Payment can be made during office hours, or dropped
in the secure mail slot just outside the entrance gate.
Please ensure your payment is delivered to the correct

you. Payment can now be made with either debit or

Help the Poor of Calgary and Re-set the Guinness
World Record!
In 2008 this food drive garnered 509,147 lbs. of food
for a value of $ 1,018,294 to set the record! Last year a
community in North Carolina broke the record by just
$20,000. This month we are making preparations to set
a new record with the largest food drive ever! If each of
last year’s participants would get one more neighbour
to help, we would not only break the record, we would
smash it!
How does it work?
•Between September 19 and 22, 7000 volunteers will
distribute bags to over 370,000 homes.
•Fill your bag with non-perishable food items and leave
it on your front step for collection prior to 9 AM on
the morning of Saturday, September 24.
•Volunteers will pick up all the donations between 9 AM
and noon.
•It’s that easy!
For more information, contact Karl Bodon at 403-2572916 OR John Sobkowicz at 403-201-5460 Organized in
partnership with The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day
Saints.
Thank You, Calgary!

The Optimist Creed
Promise Yourself...
To be so strong that nothing can
disturb your peace of mind.
To talk health, happiness and prosperity to
every person you meet.
To make all your friends feel that there is
something in them.
To look at the sunny side of everything and
make your optimism come true.
To think only of the best, to work only for the best,
and to expect only the best.
To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others
as you are about your own.
To forget the mistakes of the past and press on
to the greater achievements of the future.
To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give
every living creature you meet a smile.
To give so much time to the improvement of yourself
that you have no time to criticize others.
To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong
for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble.
The Optimist Creed was authored in 1912 by Christian
D. Larson and was adopted as Optimist International’s
creed in 1922.

Smart cards give emergency doctors more time for
patients. Smart card technology, currently being piloted at Rockyview Hospital, is allowing physicians to

being introduced in April, the technology has shown
to save emergency room doctors up to one hour per
