is appreciated. Thank you for your time and attention to this matter.
Is My Middle School Child Ready for a High School Course? One of the most important decisions to make during your child’s middle school years is whether they are ready to take high school level courses prior to attending high school! Here are some important things to consider when choosing to take high school level courses in middle school: 



Advanced coursework takes extra effort and commitment. High school grades remain on your child’s high school transcript. Re‐taking the course is not always an option. Consider the academic progressions into high school – refer to the six year planning guide. Another very important component to consider is that your child’s high school GPA begins as soon as they start taking high school level classes. Below are real examples of the impact on a student’s GPA of a student who chose to take high school courses in middle school before they were truly ready, and a student that waited until high school to begin high school level courses: Example of middle school student in high school level courses: Course Semester grades Algebra I honors A/B E/S honors B/B Spanish I A/B Cumulative HS GPA unwght: 3.3 wght: 3.66 Example of a student who waited until high school to take the same high school level courses when they were ready for the challenge: Course Semester grades Algebra I honors A/A E/S honors A/A Spanish I A/A Cumulative HS GPA unwght: 4.0 wght: 4.33 Below is data from the 2014 State University System Admissions (SUS) tour. Universities compute a weighted GPA on academic courses only. Data provided is mid‐range for students accepted for fall admissions. View link for more detailed information: http://www.flbog.edu/about/cod/asa/admissionstour.php  FSU – 3.8 ‐ 4.4  UF – 4.2 – 4.5  UCF – 3.7 – 4.3  USF – 3.71 – 4.33  FAMU – 3.0 – 3.49 GENERAL GUIDE

Attached is a letter from an independent group formed out of the LCS District Advisory Council. This is a parent group that monitors education policy and legislative issues and advocates for public schools. This letter is for information purposes only and distribution of these materials is no way an endorsement of services, activities, and/or products by Leon County Schools. Dear Stakeholder, The Florida legislators are preparing for the 2015 session that will run March 3 – May 1, 2015. Items important to the education of our children will be considered. The most effective legislative process is one in which each and every affected party has an opportunity to voice his or her position relative to the item(s) being considered. It is the hope of a group of concerned Leon County citizens that everyone is informed of the legislation (primarily educational) being considered and has the opportunity to speak up. We want you to be involved in the legislative process. We have created a Facebook group page (“Leon County Parents’ Legislative Group”) by which we can inform you of legislation that will have a bearing on Florida (including Leon County) public education and various educational –related events that are scheduled during the legislative session. This is entirely voluntary and has no association with the Leon County School District. If interested in investigating and possibly making your opinion known to the legislative process, you may request being added to the Facebook group at https://www.facebook.com/groups/691421314234146/permalink/837342239642052/. With your registration, you will receive email notifications of pending legislation and educational –related events. How involved you become is up to you. We encourage you to contact legislators and make your voice heard on behalf of public education. We greatly appreciate your interest in public education and your desire to make public education as strong and effective as (Florida) constitutionally intended for the betterment of our children and the State of Florida. Sincerely, Richard C. Mospens On behalf of “Leon County Parents Legislative Group”, my team of concerned public education stakeholders Attention Seventh Grade Parents Every year SCMS takes a group of 8th graders to Washington, D.C. to dive deeper into our country’s history. TALENT SHOW AUDITION INFORMATION
WHEN: Auditions will be held Tuesday, February 17th and Wednesday, February 18th, 2015
beginning at 8AM. Students will need to have turned in a talent show permission form signed by a
parent or guardian to participate.
WHERE: SCMS Band Room. Students should arrive and enter through the double doors facing the
courtyard.
WHAT: Your Talent! Can you sing? Play an instrument? Dance? Juggle? Act? Burp the alphabet?
Can you sing while juggling a dancing friend who is an actor who can play an instrument while
burping the alphabet? Then come out and audition for this year’s Talent Show!
SINGERS: You must have your own accompaniment (tape, CD, i-Pod, etc.) Singing along with a recording that has
professional, pre-recorded singing on it is NOT acceptable. Please note that our equipment may not play MP3 recordings.
You may want to bring a burned CD with accompaniment as backup. All singers must have the accompaniment they plan
to use in the show at the audition.
INSTRUMENTALISTS (Solo or Group): You must bring your own instruments to the audition. Music stands, a piano and
microphones will be provided, but amplifiers and instrument chords will need to be brought in by the performer.
DANCERS: You must bring an accompaniment tape, CD or i-Pod to the audition. Remember, our equipment may not play
MP3 recordings so having a burned CD is recommended.
OTHER (skits, stunts, drama etc.): Surprise us with your well-prepared, original and unique auditions!
*AUDITIONING FOR MORE THAN ONE ACT IS ACCEPTABLE!*
Students in a group act must submit TWO forms: the permission slip for each student in
the group AND one audition form for the entire group.
PLEASE REMEMBER:
All acts need to be APPROPRIATE. No foul language in lyrics, and dance acts with recordings that
have inappropriate language will NOT be accepted into the talent show.
All choreography for dancers must be tasteful in nature.
All costumes need to be appropriate and approved by Mr. Rousseau, Mrs. Behnke or Ms. Hallam.
In addition to their performance, all students are judged on their stage presence: this includes but is
not limited to: posture, smiles, and the display of a natural, confident appearance.
Students will audition for a panel of SCMS Middle School staff members. A limited number of acts
will be selected to perform in the show.
GOOD LUCK TO ALL AUDITIONING STUDENTS. BE WELL-PREPARED SO THAT YOU CAN
HAVE YOUR BEST POSSIBLE AUDITION.

Just clip box tops from participating products and send them to with your child his/her third period teacher. Box tops may be collected all though out the year. However we will pick them up four times during the year. The class that has the most will win their choice of either a pizza or ice cream party! By forming this partnership, businesses agree to work together with the school for the benefit of education and the community‐at‐large by enriching the curriculum, ensuring the quality of education necessary for economic growth, strengthening the future workforce, and/or increasing support for and confidence in public education throughout the community.
