Dear Members and Friends,
Welcome to another exciting
year with the Southern Chester
County Chamber of Commerce!
I am excited, honored, and most
importantly humbled to serve
as the Chamber president in the
coming year. I am happy to report
the state of our Chamber is very
good, due in large part to the outstanding leadership of
the past. Following in the footsteps of all the fantastic
men and women before me will certainly be tough shoes
to fill; however, I am certain with the wonderful staff we
have with Cheryl and Paula, our executive committee,
board of directors, circle partners, member businesses,
and countless individuals who volunteer their time
weekly on the five great Chamber committees, I’m
confident together we can get the job done.
I joined the Southern Chester County Chamber of
Commerce about six years ago, and I can honestly say
it has been a great experience. I truly believe in what
the Chamber of Commerce can do for you, personally
and professionally; however, as the saying goes, you
get out of it only what you put in. To me, that comes
down to three things.
First, the Chamber allows the opportunity for both
personal and professional development. With over
70 events and programs annually and numerous
opportunities to get involved or volunteer, there are
ample occasions to perfect that 30-second elevator
pitch, hear first-hand how the latest changes to the
tax code will affect your business, discover how your
colleagues are using social media to its fullest, learn
about the upcoming changes to healthcare, try your hand
at the annual Chamber scholarship golf tournament, or

hear what others think about the current and future
economic outlook, to name just a few.
The second is networking with likeminded individuals
or people with the same interests or common goals
and aspirations – people who participate in Women
in Business, GROW, Kennett BizNet, Network at Noon,
Community and Government Relations Committee,
the Communications, Ambassadors, Membership
Committees and much more. Meeting likeminded
individuals doesn’t have to be hard; it’s about taking
the right steps, putting yourself in the right places. It’s
one thing to sit behind a computer screen and fire off
e-mails, marketing pieces, and solicit new business,
but there’s nothing better than sitting face-to-face with
likeminded individuals with whom you can connect.
And the third is about connection. With social media,
email, mobile phones, etc. paving communications
forward, it’s easy to lose sight of communication
without connection. I’m a big fan of the aforementioned;
however, connecting with people raises communication
to a whole new level. I’ve had the chance to connect
with multiple people through the Chamber, some whom
I now call good friends. We have not only done business
together, but we’ve also had great fun together.
In 2014, there will again be ample opportunities
to get involved, grow your business, expand your
development, volunteer, and most importantly have
fun. I urge you to take full advantage of all the Southern
Chester County Chamber of Commerce has to offer,
you will not be disappointed. Here’s to a prosperous,
healthy, and happy upcoming year. Thank you as always

Investing in education is
crucial to the future of what
our country stands for and
central to the mission of the
Chamber. Soon, our Board
President, Joe Waters and I
will present scholarship awards to graduating
seniors from Avon Grove, Kennett Consolidated
and Unionville/Chadds Ford school districts. In
addition, we provide monetary scholarship gifts
to the Foundation for Free Enterprise Education
(FFEE). These scholarships are earmarked
for local high school sophomores and juniors,
who are eagerly awaiting acceptance into the
program.
FFEE is a PA-based nonprofit organization
whose mission is to provide leadership in
furthering the understanding and appreciation
of the free market system by educating young
people and others who will influence their
future concerning free market economics,
individual self-reliance, and preservation of the
entrepreneurial spirit.
Each summer, four one-week sessions entitled
Pennsylvania Free Enterprise Week (PFEW)
are held. This marvelously innovative program
teaches students about issues facing business
people every day. PFEW is internationally
acclaimed for its excellence, and annually
graduates nearly 2,000 students, with a vastly
improved understanding about free market
economics and how economic opportunities are
so integrally tied to personal freedom.
Participants are grouped into ‘management
teams’ of senior executives who have inherited
imaginary companies. Under the guiding hands
of ‘executives-on-loan’, teams operate their
firms and compete against two other student
‘companies’ manufacturing and distributing
the same imaginary product. The fledgling
executives face decisions that any real-life
businessperson confronts; they work with
balance sheets, statements of income, and
other financial documents and react to a variety
of external factors.
Our ability to present these gifts is possible
only because of the support from sponsors and
golfers of the Chamber’s Annual Scholarship
Golf Tournament & Dinner. Now in its 19th year,
the Tournament is a key signature event that
combines the best of member networking with
doing something beneficial for the southern
Chester County community. This year’s event
will be held on Monday, August 11th at the
beautiful and challenging Hartefeld National
Golf Club in Avondale.
Stay tuned for opportunities to support this
worthwhile cause as a golfer or sponsor. Feel

SCC LOCAL WILL PROMOTE SOUTHERN CHESTER COUNTY

By early April, Southern Chester County (SCC) will have a mobile app to
connect residents, visitors, tourists, and businesses with restaurants,
shopping, hotels, events and much more. Called “SCC Local” the mobile
app will be a free download from the Apple or Android app stores,
courtesy of Southern Chester County Chamber of Commerce.

app provides a GPS map showing the exact location of the business from
wherever you are. The user can request turn-by-turn directions from their
exact location.
“We wanted to make it very convenient for local residents and people
visiting our area to find out what’s available here, and connect them with
the businesses that meet their needs,” noted Darren Talham, president of
Kennett Systems and member of the SCCCC Board of Directors.
“Given the explosion in mobile app usage, the SCCCC Board believes this
is the best way to promote businesses that are members of the Chamber
to the region and beyond,” noted Matthew Tucker, SCCCC Chairman of
the Board. “We were fortunate to have the resources that enabled us to
develop a mobile app.”
SCC Local will be free to download, and updates will come automatically
to users’ phones, keeping them up-to-date on businesses and events in
southern Chester County. Businesses do not pay to be included in the
app, but they must be SCCCC members to be included in SCC Local.
The primary resource for app development was Kennett Systems, an
active Chamber member and experienced software developer. Kennett
Systems also has developed LazrApp™, a proprietary mobile app
platform for individual businesses.
“Our Board feels this mobile app keeps pace as an important member
benefit,” Tucker noted. “SCC Local will enhance the visibility and image
of the entire region, as well as our member businesses. We see this as a
win-win for the Chamber and all of southern Chester County.”
Kennett Systems built the platform for SCC Local, which offers easy
navigation through Home Page buttons: Restaurants, Shopping, Personal
Services, Lodging, Events, and Browse Members.
SCC Local will be launched to the public at the Chamber’s 47th Annual
Dinner, scheduled for March 28 at Longwood Gardens.
One-touch access to contact information is at the user’s fingertips, when
the user clicks through to a listing. Each business is listed with telephone

week is to group the participants (strangers at first) into “management

also react to a variety of external factors. Oil embargos, inflation, union
strikes, are but a few of the “unknowns” that these young entrepreneurs

A PFEW marketing team takes a “time out” from of life. Pennsylvania

(PFEW), internationallyacclaimed for its excellence, will graduate more than 2,000 students
this coming summer with a vastly improved understanding about
how free markets operate and what the challenges are that face all
American companies, particularly those located in Pennsylvania.
PFEW is designed to give every participant, in broad brush strokes, an
idea of what is germane and pertinent to the business world of today.
Each day’s activities include four to five presentations from world-class
business people from a list that reads like who’s who in Pennsylvania. The
students hear about: Business and Finance, the Role and Relationship of
Business and Government, Taxation, Business Ethics, Labor Relations,
and much, much more. Is it effective? Said Sarah Minor from Coudersport
Area Junior/Senior High School in Potter County, “I can tell you that this
was one of the most incredible opportunities that any young man or
woman could ever possibly dream of having! PFEW not only promises
amazing speakers and an amazing experience, it delivers on all of its

promises 100%! It really was an indescribable honor to be a part of

PA Educational Improvement Tax Credit (EITC) program through the
Department of Community and Economic Development.
SCCCC is proud to support PFEW and give our local students an eyeopening experience as Sarah described. We encourage our local
companies and civic organizations to sponsor local students and, if
possible, consider volunteering for a session. (PFEW is completely a
product of the private sector.) Every student attends PFEW on a fully taxdeductible $525 scholarship (the actual value of the scholarship exceeds
$1,500) that is provided by a local firm. All scholarship providers are
recognized and thanked in a variety of ways and each student wears the
name of their sponsor throughout the week. Each graduate corresponds

Earth Month Celebration
Throughout April, The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County
will be celebrating Earth Month with a variety of volunteer and
education activities, culminating with hosting a Comcast Cares Day
on April 26th. The activities are open to all interested parties looking

org. At The Land Conservancy for Southern Chester County (“TLC”), the
mission is to ensure the perpetual preservation and stewardship of open
space, natural resources, historic sites, and working agricultural lands
throughout Southern Chester County. Founded in the 1970s by a group
of concerned citizens, TLC was incorporated as a non-profit 501(c)(3)
organization in 1995. TLC hired its first staff person–the current executive
director–in 2004, and has since evolved into a nationally accredited land
conservancy with a staff of seven, a host of interns and volunteers, and
an actively involved all-volunteer Board of Directors.
Upland Country Day School
Announces New Head of School
The Upland Country Day School Board of
Trustees announced today the appointment
of Thomas J. Reid as Upland’s next head
of school, effective July 1, 2014. The
appointment follows an extensive and
rigorous nationwide search launched last
September. Reid will be the 8th permanent
head of school in Upland’s 65-year history,
succeeding Interim Head of School, Archie
Douglas.
Tom Reid has more than 25 years experience as a head of school and he
is an outstanding leader who will bring a wealth of experience to Upland
Country Day School. He currently serves as the interim head of school at
Palmer Trinity School, a 670-student, grade 6-12 school in Palmetto Bay,
Florida. Prior to his position at Palmer Trinity, he served as headmaster
at St. Paul’s School, a K- 12 all boys school in Lutherville, Maryland for
11 years. During that time, Tom led the school in the achievement of
the International Baccalaureate World School designation, a rigorous
academic program that encourages students worldwide to become
active, compassionate and lifelong learners. Prior to his role at St. Paul’s,
Reid spent 14 years as the headmaster of Buckley Country Day School,
an elementary school in Roslyn, New York. Among his many professional
accomplishments, he was the President of the Association of Independent
Maryland Schools and the Vice President of the New York State Association
of Independent Schools. While Reid’s chief responsibilities throughout his
career have been in school leadership, he has also taught history and
served as director of athletics and as an ice hockey coach.
Reid is no stranger to Upland Country Day School. He first became
acquainted with Upland in the late 1970s through his relationship with
the late Dr. John Cleveland, Upland’s Head of School from 1962-1981.
Dr. Cleveland launched the school’s 35-year long Finnish Exchange
Program and Upland’s rich ice hockey tradition. At the time, Reid was a
young coach leading the Wissahickon Skating Club in Philadelphia and
competed against Upland’s hockey team a number of times.
Reid was also a founding director and past president of Ice Hockey in
Harlem, an after-school program offering athletic, academic and social
services to Harlem’s youth. That program is now in its 26th year.
A graduate of the University of Pennsylvania, Mr. Reid began his
educational career in 1973 as a history teacher at the Chestnut Hill
Academy in Philadelphia. From there he moved to the Pomfret School
in Connecticut, during which time he earned his Masters Degree in
Educational Administration from the University of Connecticut.
Upland Country Day School is distinctive for the clarity, purpose and

curriculum focused on combining the development of fundamental
