New Perspectives
Theatre Company
Dolly by Andy Barrett
When Dolly the sheep burst onto the world stage in 1996,
the first ever mammal cloned from an adult cell (and
named after Dolly Parton!), she became an overnight
sensation. Now, award-winning Nottingham-based writer
Andy Barrett has investigated the hitherto unexplored
meeting point between the science of cloning and the
heartbreak of Country and Western in his new play for New
Perspectives Theatre Company for the autumn.
Dolly will be a highly entertaining combination of Dolly
Parton tribute and human drama, packed with Country
and Western classics, playfully exploring the science and
morality of cloning, and asks what really makes us who
we are – nature, nurture or the power of our dreams?

It’s not about a shop at all. Dickens changed his
mind. It’s a journey, a flight undertaken by the girl
Nell and her gambling-addicted Grandfather. A
flight from demons and enemies.

In this innovative and imaginative adaptation by
Stewart Howson, Little Nell and Quilp are played by
the same female actor reflecting the struggle between
good and evil. True to the inner life of the book, this
adaptation shows Dickens at his best, funniest and as
a master of the grotesque. NTC at its most brilliant!

by Rachael Savage
It’s 1939 and Florence is a young trainee nurse
thrown directly into the harsh realities of work on
the ward. She encounters the wrath of Sister Martin,
endures and enjoys the pranks of fellow nurses,
falls in love with her soldier sweetheart, Johnny, and
confronts the heart wrenching inequalities in the use
of the new super drug, Penicillin…will her dream of
saving lives come true?
Nursing Lives, a human story, celebrates nurses
at work and play during World War II; full mask
physical theatre alive with visual inventiveness,
evocative music, and 1940s dance sequences.
Funny, poignant, uplifting and unforgettable.
“Nursing Lives is absolutely delightful. A big
smile of a show...complete with singing pigs.”

Ill Met by Moonlight by Charles Way
Hijinx Theatre Company is touring a brand new
production of Ill Met by Moonlight
(originally toured in 1994 and 2001) receiving
outstanding audience and critical response.
Set on the border of Wales and England at a
time, not so long ago, when country people
believed in fairie-folk. A descendant of Puck still
roams the countryside causing mayhem and
madness wherever he goes! By his shape-changing
interference he attempts to thwart the course of
true love between two country folk. The results
of his malicious meddling are often hilarious and
sometimes tragic. Will he be triumphant or will true
love shine through?

Up Frankie! by Stuart Fortey
A fun-and-frolics romp through the life of one of
Britain’s most revered comedians.
Frankie Howerd has been thrown out of heaven! As
he bemoans his fate, dressed in his robes and halo,
he reveals what made him tick, what took him up and
what brought him down! Most extraordinarily of all,
he tells how his hesitations, his oohs and ahhs, his
“no, no”s were all carefully written in advance and not
ad-libs at all. So, how much freedom and how much
control did he really have in his act and in life? The
man who once wanted to be a saint, battles for his
soul with God and throws in some glorious one-liners
and a lot of cheeky innuendo along the way!
Up Frankie! is a two-hander, with the inimitable Dominic
Goodwin as Frankie plus an actress/singer/musician.

Alistair Anderson
IN CONCERT
Alistair Anderson, English concertina maestro and
Northumbrian Smallpipes wizard, has been at the
forefront of traditional music for over 30 years.
Internationally acknowledged as one of the great
traditional musicians of his age, he’s appeared on
TV, radio and concert platforms across the world.
Alistair introduces the folk music of
Northumberland, Scotland and Ireland with
beguiling tales of the history of the tunes and the
characters from whom he learnt the music. He’s
steeped in the tradition, having spent many years
playing with the three older shepherd musicians
of the Cheviot Hills, but also collaborates with
musicians from the world of jazz and classical music.
On occasion, he draws on the tradition of dialect
poetry and recitation to include a light-hearted
story or poem in the concert. Unmissable!

RO:TORO
IN CONCERT
RO:TORO plays traditional Estonian melodies
with female pipers, an improvising saxophonist,
electric guitar and a mad percussionist who plays
plastic bowls on a waterbed! The saxophone and
water drums provide a modern counterpoint to the
bagpipes’ traditional sound.
The group has its origins in Viljandi Cultural
Academy of Tartu University and works with
traditional Estonian bagpipe tunes. RO:TORO has
been collecting the songs of Khant (speakers of the
Finno-Ugric language Khanty) and includes some
of them in the concert. You may also see the foot
waltz, learn some Estonian words and marvel at the
plethora of unusual items that can make percussive
sounds including planks of wood, bicycle wheels and
other everyday objects!

New Century Theatre Company
Blue Remembered Hills
by DeNnis Potter
Dennis Potter’s brilliant, often hilarious evocation of
war-time childhood games, rivalries, jealousies – and
tragedies – is brought to life in an exciting and original
production by New Century Theatre Company. This
apparently simple tale relates the activities of sevenyear-olds on a summer afternoon. Willie tags along
as burly Peter bullies Raymond and is challenged by
fair-minded John. Audrey is over-shadowed by Angela’s
prettiness and wreaks her angry frustrations on the
boys. All of them gang up on the terrified ‘Donald
Duck’ who, abused by his mother and ridiculed by his
peers, plays his own dangerous game of pyromania.
In a unique twist, the children’s roles are acted out
by a cast of adults. The original ground-breaking
production featured Helen Mirren and Colin Welland
and was truly unforgettable.

Mamane Barka
The Lone Master of the Biram
Mamane Barka of Niger was born into a family of
Toubou nomads and grew up to become a teacher and
a celebrated musician with desert blues at his heart.
A decade ago, Mamane heard about the beautiful
sound of the biram, an enormous boat-shaped 5
stringed harp-lute sacred to the Boudouma fishing
nomads of Lake Chad. On discovering that there was
only one elderly player of the instrument left, Boukar
Tar, Mamane went to live with the Boudouma to study
with the old master, learning the instrument, its rituals
and ancient, mythical songs. On the death of the master,
Mamane was bequeathed the biram and charged with
bringing the biram to the attention of the world.
Now Mamane maintains the tradition singlehandedly, touring the world with his life-long friend,
Oumarou Adamou, the son of a Hausa Griot, whose
mesmerising percussion is the bedrock of this
extraordinarily powerful desert blues.

Shoo Shoo Baby presents
The Entire History of Cabaret
The effortlesly funny double act return to perform
The Entire History of Cabaret in just 90 minutes!
An heroic feat!
The Shoo Shoos whirl the audience breathlessly past
the spectres haunting cabaret’s past. The journey begins
in the Belle Époque Paris, rattles through the gloomily
decadent Weimar Republic, rides then hurtles across
the Atlantic through the Cotton Club, where Duke
Ellington’s subversive jazz innovations are given an
unexpectedly modern twist. The Shoo Shoos’ epic quest
to resolve the modern cabaret performer’s dilemma
– ‘art’ versus ‘entertainment’ - is satisfied with their
macabre opera parody Benjamin Britten’s Got Talent!
The Entire History of Cabaret features witty new
arrangements of songs such as Falling in Love Again,
I Am A Vamp and Eleanor Rigby.

The Twelve Wild Ducks
Be very careful what you wish for. That’s what the
Queen discovers when, after having twelve sons, she
wishes for a daughter. For, at the very moment her
beautiful daughter is born, her sons are transformed
into wild ducks. When Princess Snow-Rose learns
what happened to her brothers, she sets out on
an epic journey to try and release them from their
enchantment. She must weave and sew twelve shirts
from nettles. And, as if that isn’t hard enough, for
three years she must stay silent and neither smile nor
weep. This traditional Norwegian tale is a fabulous
fable of determination in the face of great hardship.
Internationally acclaimed Gill Nathanson and Bill

The Kosh
The Storeroom
A potent cocktail of glamour, murder and intrigue.
A thriller of fantastic imagination and wit told in
an extraordinary style.
The Kosh, one of the UK’s most daring touring
companies, hits the road again with the dazzling
dance theatre cabaret, The Storeroom, a dark, comic,
physical tale played to a mesmerising soundtrack.
Revenge is a cold dance. She’s dressed to kill and
ready to sing. The answer is in The Storeroom, if
only she can make the pieces fit. A moving jigsaw
and magical cabaret evening produced by the
fabulous The Kosh. All the parts are played by the
brilliantly talented Siân Williams; actress, dancer,
acrobat, ventriloquist, and singer extraordinaire. As
graceful and sinuous as a cat, her award-winning
performances have been acclaimed internationally.
“The astonishing Siân Williams, a rare creature,
performer of extraordinary gifts.” The Independent

Freehand Theatre
Plays with Puppets
Who’s Been Sitting in MY Chair?
Who indeed?
One two three
Was it you or was it me?
Or was it perhaps a small wee bear?
Or was it the girl with the golden hair?
Freehand has been making high quality theatre for
children for almost thirty years: a heady mix of original
puppetry, good design, rich language, beautiful music
and gentle humour. The company’s latest production,
Who’s Been Sitting in My Chair? is a playful and
musical interpretation of a well known tale – with
porridge and bears and one, two, three chairs. A tale
that’s not too big and not too small but just right.
So you think you know this story? Well, take it from us,
it’s not so easy to tell when it’s wintertime and the bears
won’t wake up – Zzzzzz – what do bears dream about?
But spring in the air puts a spring in all our steps and
one little girl is always a step ahead. And when small
bear gets lost, we all have to go on a bear hunt!

Hell said The Duchess
Karen Tweed, Becky Price
and Hannah JAMES
This all-female accordion trio formed in 2009 for a
one-off gig and enjoyed it so much, they decided
to do some more - not least for the chance to wear
lovely frocks and prove that the accordion can be
a highly expressive instrument, capable of great
beauty and subtlety, and not just a large noisy box
designed to drown out bagpipes!
The amazing Karen Tweed, Becky Price and
Hannah James present an elegant, eccentric and
effervescent concoction of traditional and original
music, harnessing various influences featuring dance
music and airs from Ireland, France, Scandinavia and
18th Century England plus songs and dances from
the Northern English repertoire performed by clogstepping virtuoso Hannah. All absolutely wonderful!

New Perspectives
Theatre Company
Lark Rise to Candleford
by Flora Thompson
adapted by Daniel Buckroyd
“The hamlet stood on a gentle rise…we shall call it
Lark Rise.”
Flora Thompson’s enduring portrait of growing
up in rural Oxfordshire in the twilight years of the
nineteenth century, and her vivid account of the
dawn of a new age of ‘progress’ that would sweep
away the centuries-old way of life she knew so well,
has captivated readers for more than half a century.
Now New Perspectives, acclaimed for its many
productions exploring life in rural England, past
and present, has transformed Flora Thompson’s
gentle masterpiece into a funny, touching and
engrossing new theatre show – a faithful account of
this unsentimental yet deeply affectionate picture
of village life, and a delightful introduction to an
unforgettable cast of characters. Be sure to see it!

An intoxicating mix of Appalachian, Cajun, Blues,
Bluegrass and Step Dancing.
The Buffalo Gals are at the forefront of the
emerging American roots music scene in the UK and
Europe and represent a revival of the string band
tradition in its most vibrant form. Combining a love

whether they be aficionados of old-time country
music or completely new to its charms.
This six-piece band (two of whom are definitely
not Gals!), led by champion Maryland USA fiddler,
Kate Lissauer, specialises in performance of the old
songs and tunes of Appalachia, blues and rags,
ballads and work songs, dance numbers, spirituals
and gospel, all delivered with passion and flair and
punctuated by Sibs who performs stunning and
thrillingly syncopated percussive step-dances that
have become one of their trademarks. Perfect for

Hot Fingers
Featuring Thomas ‘Spats’ Langham
Malcolm Sked and Danny Blyth
This internationally acclaimed trio welcomes you to an
eclectic mix of vintage acoustic string music. The trio
visit the hot jazz of 1920s New York and sophisticated
1930s Swing. From the ‘French Coffee House’ sound
of the king of gypsy guitar Django Reinhardt, the early
blues of Lonnie Johnson, the syncopated rhythms of
artists such as Argentinean Oscar Aleman and the
Swing Guitar pioneer Eddie Lang.
Featured vocals include earthy blues, sentimental
ballads, novelty crooning and the Jump Jive style of
Louis Prima. Although just a trio, the band can be
seen removing three guitars, a double bass, a banjo, a
mandolin, a ukulele, a clarinet, a sousaphone, a bass
clarinet and a pair of castanets from the band van!
Playing acoustically for a truly authentic sound, the
band attracts audiences from all ages and musical
tastes. Great chat; informative and utterly entertaining.

songs from their respective CDs and specially
chosen obscure country classics. Both are passionate
about country music and seek to take the flame

Centre Stage works in partnership
with volunteer promoters in village
halls and community venues who host
their chosen show(s) in their local hall,
selling tickets and promoting events.
Local Authority Arts Officers at County
and District level are involved in
developing the scheme and distribute
a Touring Programme/Menu, twice
a year, from which promoting groups
select their show(s).
If you would like to know more about
becoming a local promoter please call
your Local Authority Arts Officer (see list
of contacts inside) or Centre Stage’s
