July 2016 - Central Lutheran Church
Jesus Christ is the bridge
between God and us.
Worship
Schedule
Keeping Christ Central in July
Wednesday, June 29, 2016 – Worship with Holy
Communion at 7:00 p.m. Come and worship before the
big July 4th weekend!
Sunday, July 3, 2016 – Worship with Holy Communion
at 9:00 a.m. We begin the Biblical Story of Job. (Job 1:122) We meet “Satan”. The name means, “accuser”.
Satan’s job is to investigate human beings and report
what’s going on. He discovers Job – a godly and upright
man. Can enough bad things happen to Job where he will
curse God? Game on.
Wednesday, July 6, 2016 -- Come and worship on
Wednesdays. Worship at 7:00 pm.
Sunday, July 10, 2016 – Worship at 9:00 a.m. We
continue our series on the Book of Job. Job 3:1-10; 4:1-9;
7:11-21. You may notice the artistry and the poetry of this
book. Three chapters is too much in one sitting, so we
have to break it up to make it easier to digest. I would
encourage reading all the chapters because in its own
genius way, the Book of Job slowly, even ponderously
makes its point. It’s worth the effort.
Wednesday, July 13, 2018 – Worship with Holy
Communion at 7:00 p.m. See the coming Sunday for a
preview for our worship.
July 2016
Sunday, July 24, 2016 – Worship at 9:00 a.m. Job
31:35-37; 38:1-11. God answers Job out of the whirlwind.
Sometimes we just have to accept the fact that God is God
and we’re not. “Where were you when I laid the foundations of the world?” God delights in this world. God loves
this world and all God created. Some things are bigger
than our suffering.
Wednesday, July 27, 2016 – Worship at 7:00 p.m. Hot
out? Come and worship in air-conditioning.
Sunday, July 31, 2016 – Worship with Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m. Readings today: Job 38:25-27; 41:1-8;
42:1-6. Sometimes we may think it’s all about us. God
included. But Job realizes, God loves all of life. To expect
humans to be God’s sole focus is not realistic.
Wednesday, August 3, 2016 – Worship with Holy
Communion at 7:00 p.m. We conclude our Job series.
Job 42:7-17. Job and God continue their relationship. Job
speaks to God, not just about God. That’s about as good as
it gets. Find us faithful.
Sunday, August 7, 2016 – COMMUNITY WORSHIP
AT THE FAIR GROUNDS AT 10:30 A.M. It is good
to worship together with our sisters and brothers in Christ
from around the community.
Sunday July 17, 2016 – Worship with Holy Communion at 9:00 a.m. Job 14:7-15; 19:23-27. In the depths of
despair, Job longs to see God. That is his hope. This is his
faith. God will answer, because even in darkness, God
hears, God sees and God will answer.
Wednesday, July 20, 2016 – Worship at 7:00 p.m.
Enjoy worship in the summer!
WORSHIP AT THE BUFFALO COUNTY FAIR
Sunday, August 7 at 10:30 a.m.
(There will be no worship services at Central this day!)
From the Pastor
“Living the Story”
Here at Central we have been using what is known as “The
Narrative Lectionary”, from which we choose our Bible
readings for each week at worship. We’ve been using this
for about 3 years now. You will notice there are generally
only two scripture readings – a short one and a longer one.
You will also notice that the Bible readings follow in order
more like the Bible is actually laid out.
What this does is enable us to hear the story of Holy Scripture. This is God’s story. Congregations are some of the last
places left where this story can be heard. All the other tellers
of Bible stories are pretty much gone.
Before the Narrative Lectionary we used something called
the “Revised Common Lectionary” (RCL). In the RCL there
was the Old Testament reading (which week after week
jumped all over the place), sometimes a Psalm, a second
reading from anything from Acts to Revelation in the New
Testament and then a gospel reading from Matthew, Mark,
Luke or John. The RCL was developed in the 1960’s with
hopes all Christian churches would be reading the same Bible passages every Sunday. It was great idea.
Time passed and things changed. In our modern day, people
don’t know the Biblical stories so much anymore. Coming to
church they would hear and read Bible passages and have no
idea where the readings came from nor why. There was more
confusion as to what the Bible was about than inspiration.
In our day and age we are drowning in stories. Media – TV
series, advertising, billboards, text messages, Facebook and
the like, electronics, digital games and books, all tell stories.
As the last place the Bible story is heard, we need to tell
God’s story better. Hence the reason we use the “Narrative
Lectionary.”
We need to hear and listen to this Bible story for three
reasons.
1. The Bible stories challenge the fake stories we tell
about ourselves.
A. We’re not always “fine” and we need the truth.
2. Bible stories form us as a community and give us our
identity as God’s people.
A. God’s story becomes our story.
3. Bible stories become ways we can interpret life
experience.
A. We need stories to make sense out of life.
Starting in July we are going to enter into the Old Testament
Biblical story of Job.
In the midst of life the world over, human suffering is
universal and inevitable. The Book of Job is a searing and
fearless entering into the dilemmas of human suffering and
the presence or absence of God. Where is God in my suffering?
The Bible allows us to ask difficult questions of God. The
Bible is not afraid to listen to us, even when we have
difficult things to say. It welcomes and embraces the hard
stories that come with life. Yet, this will not be difficult. It
will not be morbid or hopeless. It will be quite the opposite
as we discover a God who is not afraid of us. A God who
will listen no matter what it is we have to say. We discover a
God who answers, but who answers as God. As such God
doesn’t tell us everything.
So it is Job who lets us in on conversations we perhaps have
already had or will have someday.
I invite you to read ahead. Write down your questions or
insights and put them in the offering plate (anonymously).
Then, this will be a real conversation and life changing story.
June 29 – July 3: Job 1:1-22
July 6 & 10: Job 3:1-10; 4:1-9; 7:11-21
July 13 & 17: Job 14:7-15; 19:23-27
July 20 & 24: Job 31:35-37; 38:1-11
July 27 & 31: Job 38:25-27; 41:1-8; 42:1-6

In Ephesians 4:32, the apostle Paul instructs: "Be kind to
one another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, as God
in Christ has forgiven you." In developing compassion, we
care for those we love, those we know. Eventually we will
even care for those we do not like, those we do not know.
At this year’s retreat, we’ll explore how compassion is an
action that we can practice toward others and ourselves.
Our guest speaker, and worship leader, will be the Reverend Jason Clifton. Also back with us this year will be
funny lady, Mary Segerstrom.
All women are encouraged to attend these inspirational
two days of sharing, learning and enjoyment.
The registration fee includes lodging, dinner Thursday
evening, breakfast and lunch on Friday, and refreshments
during our breaks. A one day registration fee is also available for those who want to attend just on Friday. Deadline
to register is August 10, 2016.
For registration and more info please check out the CLCW
bulletin board or call the church office 715-926-3811.

The Morning Crew Memory Cafe
A Memory Café is a once a month gathering for people with
early memory loss or a dementia-related diagnosis
(Alzheimer’s disease, Lewy Body disease, Parkinson’s with
dementia, etc.); along with their family or care partners.
Memory Cafes are becoming popular across Wisconsin, the
United States, and throughout the world as way to reduce the
isolation that individuals with dementia and their caregivers
experience.
The Morning Crew Memory Café, sponsored by the Aging
and Disability Resource Center of Buffalo County, will be
held in the lounge at Central Lutheran Church from 10 a.m. –
11:30 a.m. on the 3rd Monday of each month. Attendees can
participate in discussions of current events, learn new things
or just relax and enjoy the company of others. Occasionally
we will have a speaker on topics of health and wellness. In
addition we will offer fun activities that aid in relaxation and
mindfulness.
