During the development stage of Semara
Luxury Villa Resort in Uluwatu, Bali, in 2009,
the concept of an elegant resort home built on
a sprawling site, similar to the holiday homes
of European noblemen, was the choice of the
resort’s developer. The design is different from
most resorts in the Island of the Gods which

Sedangkan Semara Luxury Villa Resort tak
sekedar vila mewah. Berada di atas lahan seluas
7,5 hektar, kompleks rumah peristirahatan
ini berada tepat di bibir tebing Uluwatu yang
menghadap ke Samudera Hindia. Di situ
disebar 7 villa individual berukuran besar
dengan rancangan yang tak sama satu dengan
yang lainnya. “Bali memiliki banyak pilihan resor
untuk berlibur, kami menghadirkan unit-unit
vila butik yang unik,” Ros Hemley, seorang
desainer sekaligus CEO Semara Resort Group
menjelaskan.
Semara Luxury Villa Resort, however,
is more than just a luxurious group of
villas. Spread on a site of 7.5 hectares, the
complex is situated right on the cliff edges
along the beach of Uluwatu, facing the
magnificent Indian Ocean. It comprises 7
individual villas, each with an extensive
dimension and a one-of-a-kind design.
“Bali already has a wide range of holiday
resorts so we are offering a group of
boutique villas with unique designs,”
explains Ros Hemley, interior designer and
CEO of Semara Resort.

Sementara vila-vila: Tamarama, Chintamani, Nora, Ambar,
Santai Sorga, Jamadara, dan Pawana, berada di sisi terbaik
dari lahan. Masing-masing vila berdiri di atas lahan seluas
2300 m2, dengan peletakan yang tidak lurus berderet,
melainkan setiap kavling disusun berdasarkan bentuk
lahan pada tepian tebing. Bentuk lahannya yang tak
sama membawa setiap susunan massa dan ruang-ruang
terbuka di masing-masing vila berbeda satu sama lain
meski memiliki konfigurasi dasar yang sama. Hasilnya tamu
yang datang mendapatkan pengalaman yang berbeda,
tergantung di vila mana ia menginap.
Setiap vila sendiri memiliki 5 kamar yang dirancang sebagai
paviliun yang terpisah dan 28 meter infinity swimming pool.
Salah satu dari kamar-kamar itu adalah kamar utama yang
berukuran lebih besar dari kamar lain. Namun setiap kamar
memiliki kamar mandi dan ruang ganti pakaian tersendiri.
Standar lainnya adalah setiap unit vila mempunyai area bar
yang cukup besar dan media room. Melihat ukuran dan tipe
bangunannya, memungkinkan tamu menyewa satu kamar
saja atau seluruh kamar bila datang bersama keluarga dan
teman-teman untuk berlibur.
Menariknya setiap vila ditata sedemikian rupa sehingga
semua unit memiliki pemandangan spektakuler ke arah
samudra. Villa Tamarama misalnya, dirancang bernuansa
putih dengan gaya kolonial yang menghadap laut biru di
sana. Tampilannya mengingatkan kita pada rumah-rumah
peristirahatan yang banyak dibangun di daerah Karibia dan

mencapai tempat di hamparan pasir bersih ini,
tamu harus menggunakan gondola listrik yang

The reception building is completely encircled
by a well-manicured and vast tropical garden
with a sloping path on one side, leading
towards Finn’s, Semara Resort’s private beach
club located on the beach right below the
cliffs. With alang-alang thatch roof and walls
made of bamboo poles and corals, this is the
place for guests to unwind while sampling
delectable snacks, freshly cooked seafood
and delicious pizza baked in the restaurant’s
stone oven. In order to reach the beach club
with white sandy beach right at the doorstep,
guests have to use the electric gondola
provided nearby.

The jewels of the site are the magnificent villas: Tamarama,
Chintamani, Nora, Ambar, Santai Sorga, Jamadara and
Pawana, which are located on the best side of the land. Each
villa rests on a site of 2,300 m2 and to add to the organic feel
of the place they are not positioned in a straight line. Each
block follows the contour of the cliff edges and their irregular,
jagged shapes account for the dissimilar layouts and open
spaces of the villas although they have the same basic
configuration. As a result, staying guests are in for a different
experience depending on where they choose to stay.
Each villa has 5 bedrooms designed as separate pavilions
and a 28 meter infinity swimming pool. One of the rooms
is the main bedroom which is set bigger than the rest of
the bedrooms although all of them come with a private
bathroom and changing room. Each unit is equipped with
a large bar area and a media room. Considering the size
and type of the unit, it is possible for guests to only rent one
room for private use or all of the rooms should they come
with family and friends on their holiday.
It is interesting to see how each villa is arranged in an
elaborate way to allow every unit to be graced with the
breathtaking view of the ocean. Villa Tamarama, for
instance, is painted in white and features a colonial style.
Facing the vast azure ocean, the design is reminiscent of the
holiday resorts found in the Caribbean and The Hamptons,
an upscale holiday spot near the city of New York. The
interior conveys a romantic nuance, making this villa a
favorite among couples wishing to tie the knot on the island.

Desain ini memberikan nuansa romantis sehingga menjadi
villa terfavorit bagi pasangan yang ingin melangsungkan
pernikahan.
Namun mereka yang mencari atmosfer Bali bisa memilih
Villa Chintamani. Begitu melewati selasar vila setelah
memasuki pintu utama, nuansa tropis yang hangat segera
menyambut. Yang menarik di sini, setiap paviliun kamar
tidur memiliki plunge pool privat yang dikelilingi taman
dengan tanaman-tanaman yang rimbun. Kamar utamanya
sendiri berada di bagian belakang dengan plunge pool yang
menghadap ke lautan, terasa sangat luar biasa sekaligus
romantis. Vila ini terhubung dengan vila di sebelahnya yaitu
Villa Nora sehingga total bila digunakan bersamaan akan
terdapat 10 kamar. Vila lainnya yang senada dengan dua vila
ini adalah vila Ambar.
Berbeda dengan vila-vila yang sudah disebutkan adalah
Santai Sorga. Desain bangunan vila ini terinspirasi gaya
arsitektur Spanyol dan negeri-negeri Mediterania. Maka
tampilannya terkesan hangat dan mewah. Kamar tidur
utamanya menempati seluruh lantai atas bangunan

For holidaymakers keen on finding the traditional Balinese
atmosphere, Villa Chintamani is the place to stay. Soon
after walking through the corridor that connects the
main entrance to the living quarter, a warm tropical
ambience envelops the senses. In a true holiday style, each
bedroom pavilion comes with a private plunge pool that
is surrounded by lush vegetation. The main bedroom is
positioned at the back and has a plunge pool that faces
the ocean, lending a majestic and romantic feel to the villa.
Villa Chintamani is connected with adjoining Villa Nora and
together they can provide 10 bedrooms for larger groups
of guests. Another villa with similar characteristic is Villa
Ambar.
Slightly different from the previously described villas is
Villa Santai Sorga. Taking its inspiration from the Spanish
architecture and other structures in the Mediterranean
countries, the villa displays a warm and opulent interior.
The main bedroom occupies the whole top floor of the main
building while the other bedrooms are placed on the left
and right side of the corridor that leads to the infinity pool
on the edge of the cliff. Located a mere 30 meters from the

vila ini terasa lapang. Sementara yang terakhir, Vila Pawana
menawarkan sebuah tempat bersantai dengan bangunan

Jamadara. Imposing in a combination of white and

Unique
Concept
A unique and different concept is needed in the design and
development of a holiday resort. In the same line of thought Semara
Luxury Villa Resort in Uluwatu, Bali is presenting a one of a kind design.
Seven sprawling villas, each with five separate pavilion bedrooms,
are designed differently so that none is alike. Below is the interview
between Benedictus Rio Sutanto of Indonesia Design and Ros Hemley,
interior designer and CEO of Semara Luxury Villa Resort.
Apa konsep membangun kompleks vila seperti ini?
Konsep dasarnya adalah membuat resor vila butik
yang unik di pasar. Di Bali kita memiliki banyak
pilihan untuk berlibur, kebanyakan adalah hotelhotel besar dan resor, beberapa menghadirkan vilavila dan juga vila-vila privat. Yang membuat Semara
unik adalah tujuh vila yang ada di dalamnya didesain
dengan pendekatan arsitektur yang berbeda.
Mengapa sampai tujuh?
Resor ini menekankan pada individualitas dan
perayaan gaya personal. Karenanya kami tidak
meletakkan vila-vila berderet lurus melihat ke sudut
pemandangan yang sama. Saya rasa ini adalah
solusi yang sempurna dan membuat resor kami
unik, sekaligus merupakan sebuah cara yang bagus
untuk memberikan pilihan kepada tamu kami untuk
memutuskan nuansa liburan mereka sendiri.

What is the design concept of this villa
compound?
The basic concept is to create a boutique villa
resort that stand unique and unlike any others
in the industry. In Bali we have many options
for holiday homes, mostly in the form of large
hotels and resorts featuring villas and private
villas. What makes Semara unique is the seven
villas inside the compound, each with a different
architecture approach.
Why seven villas?
This resort is highlighting individuality and it
also celebrates personal style. I think this is a
perfect solution to create certain uniqueness to
our resort and a great way to offer choices to our
guests allowing them to chose their own holiday
atmosphere.
Melihat desain ukurannya, sepertinya target pasarnya adalah grup
besar atau acara seperti pertemuan bisnis dan pernikahan?
Pendekatan desain yang kami ambil mampu mengakomodasi beragam
tipe kelompok. Keluarga, teman, perusahaan, hingga pernikahan. Namun
konfigurasinya juga memungkinkan kami untuk menyewakannya
sebagai unit-unit terpisah di dalam setiap vila, sehingga cukup fleksibel.
Apakah ada satu garis merah dalam desain vila-vila ini?
Konfigurasinya kurang lebih sama, setiap vila memiliki lima kamar tidur
dengan kamar mandi dan ruang ganti pakaian tersendiri. Kolam renang
terbesar dalam setiap vila dan ruang-ruang duduk dirancang menghadap
ke Samudera Hindia memanfaatkan lokasi di atas tebing ini.
Kenapa memilih pengembangan seperti ini di Uluwatu?
Lokasi ini luar biasa dan itu adalah faktor yang menentukan. Seluruh
kompleks ini dapat menikmati view luar biasa ke Samudera Hindia.
Kemudian di bawah, kami memiliki pantai kecil berpasir putih untuk
Finn’s Beach Club. Bisa dikatakan ini adalah sesuatu yang luar biasa.
Considering the size of the design, apparently the target market is a
large group of holidaymakers or those who want to arrange private
functions like business meetings and weddings?
The design approach that we took can accommodate various client
groups—families, friends, companies and even weddings. But the
configuration also allows us to rent the rooms as separate units inside the
villas, so it’s pretty flexible.
Is there a common theme in the design of each villa?
The configuration is more or less the same. Each villa has five bedrooms with
a private bathroom and changing room. The largest swimming pool inside
each villa and all of the sitting rooms are arranged to face the Indian Ocean,
capitalizing on the compound’s cliff top location.
Why did you choose Uluwatu as the site for this development?
This is a magnificent location and that was the determining factor. From all
parts of the compound you can enjoy glorious views of the Indian Ocean.
Then down below we have a small beach with white sand where we build the
Finn’s Beach Club. You can say that this is quite a spectacular development.
