Hiroshima
(UNESCO World Heritage)
Hiroshima is best known as
the first city in history to be
destroyed by an atomic bomb in
1945. Atomic Dome and Peace
Memorial Park are places to visit.
Hakone
The volcanically active Fuji–
Hakone–Izu
National
Park,
centered around Lake Ashinoko,
is a popular tourist attraction well
known for its Onsen (hot springs)
and its views of Mount Fuji.
Kawaguchiko
Lake Kawaguchiko is one of five
lakes at the foot of Mount Fuji.
The view of Mount Fuji together
with the lake is magnificent.
Nikko (UNESCO World Heritage)
The village of Nikko developed
around Rinnoji Temple (established
in 766) and the temple of Chuzen–ji
(established in 784). The Toshogu
Shrine was completed in 1617 and
became a major draw of visitors
to the area during the Edo period.
Nikko became the home of the
mausoleums of the Tokugawa
Shoguns.
Kanazawa
Kanazawa is a leading tourist
city. It was a great castle town
ruled by an influential leader
from the 17th century. Kanazawa
has not suffered from any
war devastation or big natural
disaster. Therefore, Kanazawa
maintains rows of historical
houses and inherits traditional
handicrafts and performing arts.
Kijimadaira
Kijimadaira Village, located in
central Japan, is preserving
farmland and forest. Their
rice won gold prize at the 2009
International Competition of
rice taste evaluation, and their
spring water was selected one of
“Japan’s 100 best water” in 1985.
Kijimadaira Junior High School
has sister school relationship
with the Lycée Classique de
Diekirch.
Okayama
Okayama City, the capital of
Okayama Prefecture, a major
gateway to Inland Sea National
Park and Shikoku,
is famous for Korakuen Garden
and beautiful historic Okayama
Castle known as the “Crow
castle” because of it’s colour. The
city is famous also as the setting
of the legend of Momotaru
(Peach Boy).
Myjajiima
Koyasan (UNESCO World Heritage)
Koyasan was settled in 819 by the monk Kukai (posthumously known
as Kôbô Daishi). It is the headquarter of the Kôyasan sect of Shingon
Buddhism. Situated on a small plain at the top of Mount Kôya you find
the sacred area known as Danjô Garan, a complex of temples, halls,
pagodas and Buddhist statuaries that welcome visitors to this serene
and hallowed place. Surrounded by a thick forest of massive cedars,
the area known as Okuno–in, or the Inner Sanctuary, is the setting for
a vast cemetery that features the mausoleum of numerous famous
Japanese, including that of the samurai ruler Toyotomi Hideyoshi as
well as memorials to the spirits of soldiers killed in the Pacific War.
Kurashiki
The old merchant quarter is
called the Bikan historical area.
It contains many fine examples
of
17th
century
wooden
warehouses painted white with
traditional black tiles, along
a canal framed with weeping
willows and filled with Koi. The
area has no electric poles in
order to keep the atmosphere
and the view of the city from the
Meiji period.
(UNESCO World Heritage)
Since ancient times, Miyajima,
the island itself, has been
worshipped as a god. This belief,
has been protecting Itsukushima
Shrine, other shrines and
temples as well as the island’s
unique culture, and its nature.
This sacred island shows
different faces according to the
tide which is similar effect to the
natural phenomenon at Mont St.
Michel in Normandie, France.
Naoshima
Naoshima is an island located
in the Setonaikai Sea of Japan.
It is renowned for its large
number of contemporary art
galleries,
architecture
and
exhibits. Naoshima is the best
known for the Benesse House
complex. There has been
extensive domestic attention to
the recently (2006) completed
radical Chichu Art Museum.
Kyoto
(UNESCO World Heritage)
Matsumoto
Matsumoto is located at the
foot of Japan Alps rising to the
heights of 3,000 meters. The
town has flourished as a
castle town since 16th century.
Matsumoto castle with the view
of Japan Alps is a breathtaking
scenery. There are many Onsen
(hot springs) around Matsumoto.
Nara
Takayama
The town itself could be called
a sightseeing spot with the
latticed bay windows and
linked eaves of merchants’
houses in Sanmachi Suji, the
enduring historical temples
and shrines of Higashiyama,
and the reproduction of Hida’s
traditional mountain farming
villages of sloped–roof houses at
Hida Folk Village.
Kyoto is one of the most famous
city in Japan representing
Japanese culture and history.
Kyoto became the seat of Japan’s
imperial court in 794, and
remained Japan’s capital until
the transfer of the government
to Edo in 1868. Kyoto is the only
large Japanese city that still
has an abundance of prewar
buildings, such as the traditional
townhouses known as Machiya.
Shirakawago
(UNESCO World Heritage)
Shirakawago is a historic
village and is famous for its
farmhouses, which are built in a
unique architectural style known
as Gassho that keep the snow
off in the winter. Underneath the
roofs, the large attic area was
used to house silkworms.
Nara was the first parmanent
capital of Japan from 710 to
784. Because the Buddhist
monasteries had a powerful
influence, it remains full of
historic treasures, including
some of Japan’s oldest and
largest temples. Eight temples,
shrines
and
ruins,
with
Kasugayama Primeval Forest,
collectively form “Historical
Monuments of Ancient Nara”.
