Coyote Sighting
Just a heads up...on Sunday Feb 3rd at
10:00 am, a wild coyote was spotted
luring in the field under the power lines
by the jog path off Poplar Grove and

DLCA 2008 Budget Update
The DLCA Board has passed the 2008
Budget and it has been posted to the
Property Owner’s Section of the Website. www.davislake.org/membersonly/
You will need to register for access to
the site if you have not already done so
in the past. In addition, all of the financial reports from 2007 have also been
posted along with most of the minutes
from the 2007 meetings.
Fitness Equipment
Come check out the new fitness equipment that was recently donated to the
Davis Lake Fitness Room. Two pieces
of equipment ( a stair stepper and exercise bike) have been added to the room
to replace some old machines that were
no longer in working order. The DLCA
and everyone who uses the room certainly appreciate the donation that was
made anonymously in February. We
cannot thank the donor enough for helping us provide this much needed update
to our Fitness Room.
Volunteer Committee Meetings - Anyone interested is welcome to attend and
join the Social Committee which is
meeting on Wednesday, March 5th at
7pm at the Clubhouse.
Leash Laws
The City of Charlotte and Mecklenburg
County have strict leash laws that apply
to all animals except cats (see the nuisance animal section for laws pertaining
to cats). Animals must be on a leash,
contained within a fence or an operable
March 2008
and marked invisible fence. An animal
may be loose in its own yard if there is
an adult (18 years or older) present with
the animal and the animal responds to
direct verbal commands of the person.
All regulations aim to protect the health
and safety of our citizens. Please be a
responsible pet owner and abide by the
law. Violations will be investigated and
stiff fines may be applied. Fines range
from a $50.00 citation for the first violation and up to a $500.00 citation and
permanent seizure of the animal for a
fifth violation.
To report an animal at large, please call
311. This law applies to the lake and
field area in Davis Lake. There have
been several “close calls” in the last few
weeks between animals—some were not
on leashes. Please be a responsible
owner and keep your pet on a leash. The
law is to protect you and your pet.
For more information on this topic see
the Safety and Security Committee’s
article on page 11.
will be receiving passes. The passes will
be made and delivered to your home in a
few short days.
For those of you who do not want to deal
with emails and attachments, you may
come to the clubhouse to have your
photo taken and your pass made on
site. Call Ryan Houck to set up an appointment—704-596-6958. Getting your
pass early will allow you to enjoy the
pool as soon as it opens May 17th.

Dear Davis Lake Residents,
Your association held its Annual Meeting during January and we
had a good turnout of 75 plus members. The annual meeting is
when the financial results are presented, the budget for the coming
year is discussed and new board members are introduced. This
information can also be found on the Davis Lake website. There
was also a question/comment and answer session which is always
very stimulating. If you did not attend the Annual meeting, please
try to attend next year.
On February 10, 2008, the members of the DL Board of Directors
met and made history. A woman, Terry Potts, was selected by the
Board of Directors to be President. Congratulation Terry! Her
experience to oversee and guide the interest of DL is welcomed.
During 2008 the Board will continue to focus on the volunteer
program which has been put in place. If you have any suggestions, pro or con, please use these committees as the means to
express your interest in DL. You can attend one of their meetings or use the feedback page found on the Davis Lake Website
www.davislake.org/feedback.htm
Most committees meet monthly so your ideas will be heard
quickly.
Please take a look at the online calendar of events
www.davislake.org/calendar/ and get involved. If you are already involved, thank you and stay involved. Your enjoyment
of the DL experience and its assets are a primary focus of the
Board and CAM.
As a final note, CAM will continue to drive the property and send
letters to those residents that are not in compliance with the DL
guidelines. Please take a minute and review the website for all
standards as they pertain to DL. Of special note, please review the
ARC standards and the Restrictive Covenants found in the DL
Covenants, Conditions and Restrictions (CCRs) for mailbox compliance and architectural issues. CAM has seen much improvement
and appreciates the support of all residents that have taken the steps
to be good neighbors by maintaining the exterior of their homes in a
manner that all residents can be proud. Please do not hesitate to
call CAM should you have any questions.
We look forward to seeing you around the neighborhood.

BOsS (Business Owners Spotlight)
Emily and Andrew Sides moved to Davis Lake in October of 2006
from Virginia. Andrew’s job brought them to Charlotte, but the couple chose to live in Davis Lake because they fell in love with the
neighborhood. They have been married for several years and live in
Harris Glen.
Emily decided to start her own business because she found a product
that she could be passionate about. She feels strongly about good nutrition for everyone, especially for children, so she became a Juice
Plus+ distributor. This juice contains 17 different fruits and vegetables and two (non-gluten) grains. They are available in capsule, chewable and gummy form. Juice Plus+ helps support a healthy immune
system and protects DNA, reduces oxidative stress and positively
impacts several key indicators of cardiovascular wellness.

Water Conservations
by the Go Green! Committee
Use landscaping to conserve water.
Water is one of our most valuable natural resources. To protect our water supply from extreme shortages, we should
strive daily to conserve water. One area
where water use can be decreased without sacrificing beauty or function is in
landscaping. The term xeriscaping
means landscaping for efficient water
use. By using plants that are drought
tolerant and by knowing what amount of
water is right for your landscape and
when to water, you can use much less
water.
Choose plants based on water needs.
Many of our southern landscape plants
can live through drought. Once they are
established, plants such as Crape Myrtle, Elaeagnus, Cedar, Chinese and Japanese Hollies, Glossy Abelia, and Juniper
can survive weeks without supplemental
irrigation. Table 1 lists plants that are a
good choice for wise-water-use landscapes.
Most healthy, established turfgrasses
need about 1 inch of water each week
for optimal growth but can survive at
least four weeks without water.
Turfgrasses may turn brown and become semidormant during drought, but
they recover once water is available.
The drought tolerance of turfgrass varies. Once established, warm-season
grasses, such as bermuda and zoysia,
require 50 to 75 percent less water than
cool-season grasses, such as tall fescue.
With proper selection, establishment,
and maintenance, turfgrasses require
much less water than once thought.
Place plants for efficient water use.
Incorporate natural areas into your landscape design wherever possible. Native
plants, once established, often require
little supplemental water and maintenance. Turf, which requires much more
care, is practical in areas of the landscape where it serves a function, such as
in recreational areas, on slopes to control erosion, or where it lends aesthetic
value. When you begin planning your
landscape, divide the area into low-,
moderate-, and high-water-use zones
and locate plants accordingly.
Mulching can decrease your landscape's
Trees
water needs. Three to five inches of
mulch, such as pine straw, pine bark,
aged wood chips, or compost, help conserve soil moisture. Mulch also insulates the root system of plants from heat
and helps control weeds which compete
with the plant for water. Fine-textured
mulches, such as pine straw or mininugget pine bark, retain more moisture than
coarse mulches. On sloping sites, pine
straw stays in place better than most
other mulches and helps control erosion.
Landscape fabrics can also be used under mulch to conserve moisture, discourage weeds, and enhance erosion
control.
Manage the landscape to avoid unnecessary plant stress.
When water is scarce, avoid unnecessary plant stress. Do not fertilize. Fertilizers are chemical salts and may damage
roots and prevent water absorption. Fertilizers also stimulate new growth,
which increases demand for water.
Pruning also stimulates new growth and
should be avoided during water shortages.

Trainers Tips and Tidbits by Caroline Cale
A question I get asked on a regular basis is “What is one of the best exercises I can do?” My usual answer is “walk.” Walking
may not have the flare that comes and goes with the hottest new trend or the calorie burning capacity of other exercises such as
running or stair stepping, but walking has many wonderful benefits that can be reaped throughout your lifetime. Here are a few
of them:
Walking is practical. You can walk almost anywhere at anytime.
Walking is cheap. Very little equipment is needed. A good pair of walking shoes, comfortable clothes, and possibly some
music or a friend.
Walking on a consistent basis has great health benefits. It can help manage weight, blood pressure, cholesterol, blood
sugar, and mental/emotional health.
Getting started is easy. Start walking at a comfortable pace for short distances while keeping
good posture. If you are gasping for air, slow down and avoid hills. When you can walk for a
couple of miles or 20-30 minutes, gradually vary your speed and add hills to challenge yourself.
When you are done with your walk take a few minutes to stretch your legs and back to help
your body relax and increase flexibility. With the warm weather on its way and New Year’s
resolutions wavering, now is a good time to get out and start.
Caroline has a B.S. in Health and Exercise Science, is a certified personal trainer, and is the president of

Dog Safety and Regulation in Charlotte by the Safety and Security Committee
Davis Lake is a wonderful place to live and enjoy an active
