NEW DAWN
ATMOSPHERE
A ZOOM soon brings far away things much closer. For
ORTOVOX these four letters stand for the DAWN of a
new era. With our new avalanche transceiver ZOOM, we
are bringing EMOTION to the young market. We
combine fresh design with the latest 3-antenna
technology, at a FAIR PRICE. A TOTALLY NEW device
category that has never been seen before!
ZOOM – the CHANGE OF PERSPECTIVE has also
brought other product areas into focus. In the clothing
sector we have logically continued the SWISSWOOL
STORY! The natural new wool from Switzerland is
suitable for all parts of the body that easily freeze! We
all know the feeling of our fingers hurting from the
cold. Our NEW GLOVE COLLECTION brings warming
SWISS WOOL to your fingers and ensures an unprecedented, natural comfort level.

Our FREESKI-MOUNTAINEERING ATHLETES and the
photographer Klaus Fengler also had to change their
ANGLE OF VIEW last spring. April refused to bring any
snow at all to our Alpine climes, so the team of five
soon found themselves back in the LYNGEN ALPS of
Norway. An UNFORGETTABLE trip, which not only
brought out the full Alpinist in each of them, but also
the steadfast sailor.
Let yourself also be infected by the NEW DAWN
ATMOSPHERE at ORTOVOX and immerse yourself in a
new world with the 2012/13 Workbook! We look forward
to a snowy winter, full of adventure!

Snow crystals glisten
in the morning sun.
Your pulse pounds on
the ascent and the
adrenaline on descent
makes you hungry for
more!
The CHANGES between sweat-inducing ascent and
the cold wind on the descent demand a FUNCTIONAL and PROTECTIVE CLOTHING SYSTEM, which
provides sufficient comfort at all times to be able
to enjoy the moments in the winter outdoors. For
these moments we have developed our MERINO
LAYERING SYSTEM.
The merino 1ST LAYER provides you with the BASE
for natural well-being with a cozy feeling against
the skin. The merino 2ND LAYER should not
restrict you in any way. Breathable material
combinations ensure OPTIMAL BODY TEMPERATURE and provides a buffer against the cold.
3RD LAYER products offer you PROTECTION, be it
against icy temperatures or rain and snow. They
should always be with you at least in your backpack.
When it comes to HARDWARE, the emphasis is on
FUNCTION and WEIGHT! Light, but extremely
sturdy products allow for a comfortable ascent and
can help you to save crucial seconds in an emergency.

The THIN, ICE-COLD air
makes your pulse race.
Your CRAMPONS bite in the
solid frozen snow, your
PICK claws into small
cracks in the rock - until
you are at the top.
Alpine tours demand FLEXIBLE and FUNCTIONAL
CLOTHING SYSTEMS, probably like no other sport.
You hike through different climate zones, but at the
same time have no intention of taking your entire
wardrobe for a walk. Your ONLY COLLECTION
therefore has to do everything.
An ORTOVOX 1ST LAYER made of merino wool acts
as a basis. MERINO WOOL not only regulates the
body‘s moisture but also has a TEMPERATURE
COMPENSATING effect. It can therefore keep you
warm in cold conditions and keep you cool in the
heat due to the storage effect. Particularly on long
tours, the wool‘s ODOR-NEUTRALIZING properties
also come into their own.
The higher you climb, the more important a
protective and functional 3RD LAYER becomes.
ORTOVOX recommends the MERINO SOFTSHELL
collection here. It manages without a membrane
and hence does not restrict the BREATHABILITY,
while at the same time providing adequate protection against wind and weather. The merino wool on
the inside of the product further increases the level
of comfort.
For EXTREME SITUATIONS you should take at least
a 3L JACKET with you in your backpack. If you do
encounter heavy rain, snow or storms, then you
will keep dry and protected.

LOCATION Lyngen Alps
team-trip
Can a winter come to
an end at 25° at the
start of April?
Without a proper
steep-face season?
In the Alps yes – but
not in the LYNGEN ALPS!
 A few hours after the landing gear
disappears in the nose of our Boeing, we
find ourselves on board the FRI FLYT,
back in the heart of the Lyngen Alps. The
Fri Flyt, a 14-meter long SINGLE-MAST
BOAT, will serve as our FLOATING
HOTEL for a week. We are a team of four
free ski mountaineering athletes and the
photographer Klaus Fengler. In six days
we want to CROSS the Lyngen Alps from
south to north and ski steep walls and
gullies as much as possible. So much
for the plan – the reality is quite
different.
 The Lyngen Alps form part of the most northerly mainland in
Norway. A few sailing hours towards the NORTH POLE there is only
Bear Island, beyond that Spitsbergen. There is definitely a certain
similarity to our Central European Alps: a MIXTURE of the Kitzbühel
Alps and the Wilder Kaiser, the valleys filled with millions of cubic
liters of water – WELCOME TO NORTH NORWAY!
13
 Our motorized rubber boat sets us ashore. We do
our gear right on the beach – counting off the
meters starts at sea level this time.
 Hotel and taxi in one.
You could not ask for
more flexibility and
comfort.
 Unlike the sunshine and the spring weather back home, the
weather in Lyngen is acting totally crazy – and there is no improvement in sight.
 In the Lyngen Alps you cannot resort
to the luxury of an avalanche report. The
ability to assess avalanche conditions
and KNOWLEDGE of precipitation,
temperatures and wind directions over
recent days is INDISPENSIBLE. The
weather is characterized by lots of wind
and regular precipitation. The low
pressure systems hit the EXPOSED
SUMMITS of the Lyngen Alps with full
force and often settle in for days.
14
 Descents that DEMAND EVERYTHING. From powder
and bare ice to 'railroad' snow, a single slope can offer
everything. For what we have in mind, the conditions
are not usable.
team-trip
 With every meter climbed, the view
becomes clearer and more BREATHTAKING. It is a unique experience to
enjoy the fascinating combination of sea
and mountains. The harsh contrast
between the black-looking FJORDS and
the snow-covered PEAKS rising out of
them provides an almost unrivalled
beauty. The landscape is never ending
– VAST amounts of water, mountains
and snow, not a soul to be seen far and
wide.
 Gully check. Plenty of fun on steep walls can be
seen from the boat. What we see unfortunately turns
into reality. The RISK OF AVALANCHE is simply TOO
HIGH.
STEEP WALLS FINALLY! The first
turns in the firn wall feel good. Gentle
cruising up to where the biggest steep
sections await. It is right here that the
firn changes into bare ice. Our STEEL
EDGES try to dig in, our nerves are
strained to the limit, just like our thigh
muscles that were so relaxed a few
seconds ago. Gentle curves have
become hard jump turns now, without
worrying about style grades.
15
 In the middle of April,
the sun does not go down
until 10 pm and makes up
for the long weeks
without daylight. A month
later there is 24 hours of
light for ski tours, but
unfortunately you do not
get the CRAZY LIGHT
SHOW of the Northern
Lights.
 Relaxing amidst an
idyllic Norwegian setting.
The key stage from the
east to the west coast
took some effort.
 Many thanks to Ivar from
BOREAL YACHTING for a unique week in
the Lyngen Alps.
 Final destination:
North Cape. All there is
further north are Bear
Island, Spitsbergen and
the North Pole. This
means saying goodbye
for us. FASCINATING
impressions, the solitude
in a uniquely untouched
landscape and Norwegian
HOSPITALITY are what
we take back to the
summer in Central
Europe.
16
ORTOVOX recommends
Boreal Yachting
for tours in Norway!
boreal-yachting.com
Ivar Bertelsen runs a yacht hire business near
Tromsö in the Lyngen Alps, organizes sailing trips
throughout the year and goes sailing himself as
much as he can. The Norwegian sea dog had the
pleasure of skippering our freeski mountaineering
team all over the Lyngen Alps in April. Would he do it
again? We had a little chat with him.
Ivar, what is special about sailing and
skiing in Lyngen?
Well, I believe the most striking thing is the meeting
between sea and mountain. There are no similar
places in Europe where you can go skiing from a
yacht and end up in the same yacht in another fjord
after climbing a mountain with fresh and untouched
powder snow.
People also appreciate that they are alone, that the
crowds are miles away. Lyngen also offers a variety
of possibilities, from family-friendly mountains to
extreme routes for very experienced ski lovers
as the ORTOVOX-Team.
When is the best time to visit you? When is
there the best powder, when do the northern lights appear?
For skiers the season starts mid February and ends
in the beginning of May. The quality of the snow
hardly varies during this period, however the days
are shorter in February, so very long expeditions
should take this into account. When May comes on
the other hand, we get 24 hours a day of sun!
Lyngen has long traditions in climbing and provides
excellent conditions for winter climbing. The famous
British climber William Cecil Slingsby often visited
Lyngen between 1880 and 1890 and had a consider-
able influence on Norwegian mountaineering. You
should come back next February and test out ice
climbing!
What sort of tours can your guests expect?
What requirements do they need to fulfill?
As I mention, we have visitors - or friends as we say,
with various ambitions and skills. Often people want to
reach at least one 1000 m high summit every day. We
expect at least one person to have adequate alpine
knowledge to ensure a safe tour in the steep mountains. People are generally well prepared and well
equipped. We see many ORTOVOX avalanche transceivers on board.
Tell us briefly how a day with you unfolds?
A normal day starts with an early good breakfast and a
drop off at the starting place. People prepare food for
the tour and are ready to go when the sun comes up. A
mountain guide brings the group to the summit and the
trips vary from 4 to 10 hours, sometimes more. Even
stopovers in the mountains, like the Ortovox team did,
happen from time to time. When people are safely back
on the yacht, they are meet with a warm light meal and
some goodies to recover from the hard work in the
mountains, maybe a beer if someone wants. Then we
move to the next destination, and in the evening we
enjoy a traditional Norwegian dinner and enjoy life in
general.
The ORTOVOX team was on the look-out for
steep gullies. You were not always completely thrilled by that. Where do the dangers
lie in the Lyngen Alps?
We really care for our friends and we do not want any
accidents. It is a balance between risk-taking and
experience. The Ortovox team was challenging the
elements far more than we normally allow, as you
probably noticed. The team members had excellent
ski proficiency and experience in analyzing their
surroundings and the snow conditions. They had
every situation under control.
Trips that push the limits as far as the ORTOVOX team
did are seldom, however.

would you spend another week with the
team?
Yes, absolutely, I had a great time myself. With such
great people on board, I would happily have gone on a
longer expedition. Maybe you would join us for an
expedition to Lofoten or Svalbard.
See you next winter and thanks for a fantastic week!
The team was thrilled by the Norwegian
cuisine. What are its specialties?
Thank you! We really try to serve Norwegian quality
food. The meals are considered to be an important
factor of the whole trip. We only buy fresh produce or
"short-travelled food" as we call it. We catch or buy
fresh fish from the fishermen as we go and we get
fantastic meat from reindeer, elk, sheep and goats prepared according to the local traditions. All food is
made freshly on board.

Merino Mountainwear
We have put our trust in MERINO WOOL since 1995! That is 17 years of
experience working with the most functional of all natural fibers. 17
years, during which we have considerably revolutionized and developed the merino market with our INNOVATIVE PRODUCTS. Today we
are the leading manufacturer of merino clothing for mountain sports
enthusiasts.
We look at merino wool in an integral way. In our philosophy, we use
merino wool IN EVERY LAYER of our clothing system, starting with
the 1ST layer, through insulating layers and finally to the hardshell
3RD layer. In this regard we only work with partners who share our
ETHICAL values and SOCIAL requirements. For us, animal welfare
comes before pure commerce.

swisswool (Sw)
Filled with NATURALLY produced wool from SWITZERLAND, not
only does our SWISSWOOL line set standards in terms of
DESIGN and FUNCTIONALITY, but above all we have a commitment to sustainability. Using Swisswool collection points, we
support REGIONAL SHEEP FARMERS in areas with poor
infrastructure. Farmers and shepherds can deliver their wool
there at shearing times in spring and receive fair
pay. The wool is then transported short distances
and processed completely in EUROPE with an
environmental impact as low as possible!

The LIGHTWEIGHT VERSION of our successful classic line. We
have reduced the weight of the lining to 90G/M² in order to be
able to cater for active mountaineers. Without compromising in
terms of functionality and quality, we were able to
change our supply chain to one of 100% EUROPEAN

Merino Softshell
For our softhells we count on MCM. MCM stands for MERINO
COMFORT MAPPING. In this case, different material thicknesses
SPECIFIC TO THE BODY ZONES are placed according to the
human body's heat zones. Wind and water-repellent softshell is
used on the outside, while on the inside we use a thin merino
laminate. The result of this membrane-free combination is very
high BREATHABILITY and excellent MERINO temperature
CONTROL.

Merino Hardshell (MI)
The most natural 3-layer system in the world! We combine a soft
merino lining with the high-performance membrane,TORAY
DERMIZAX EV. The discreet merino linings act as a temperature
and moisture buffer and ensure NATURAL MERINO temperature CONTROL. The Dermizax EV membrane is a non-porous
membrane, whose molecular structure opens up as soon as the
temperature inside rises. The benefit: the membrane cannot clog
up and thus guarantees PERMANENTLY PERFECT BREATHABILITY and protection from the elements.

We lose up to 40 % of our BODY HEAT through our head! Our new merino collection can prevent that. The
heavy crimp of the merino fibers means that plenty of insulating air collects between the spaces between the
fibers and protects our sensitive head from getting cold. So that COMFORT is not compromised alongside
TEMPERATURE MANAGEMENT, we use our softest MERINO SUPERSOFT fiber on all our knitted hats –
guaranteed SCRATCH-FREE!

Wool
In 1988 we discovered CLASSIC MILLED WOOL for the first time and have hung onto it ever since. In 24
years of experience with milled wool, our gloves and socks have been seen on numerous expeditions on
mountains big and small. Why? Wool has the unique benefit of KEEPING YOU WARM even when wet and
therefore provides great, natural SAFETY RESERVES against the cold!

Australia, the home of merino wool. The
first merino sheep came to Sydney from
South Africa in 1797. Less than 100 years
later, down under had risen to become
the worldwide market leader in the wool
trade. In 1892 100 MILLION SHEEP
inhabited the countryside. Nowadays
Australia is the biggest wool producer in
the world. 74 MILLION SHEEP are
SHORN EVERY YEAR, producing 340,000
TONS OF WOOL. merino background
64
The CLIMATE and VEGETATION have a
significant influence on the QUALITY OF
THE WOOL. Consistent conditions lead to
steady fiber growth without weak points.
33.7% of the wool produced is 19
MICRONS THICK or finer, meaning that it
can hardly be felt by the HUMAN
NERVOUS SYSTEM (human hair =
50-100 microns) and hence is predestined for ORTOVOX merino clothing.
Australian farmers have a very
RESPONSIBLE APPROACH to managing
their resources. This awareness encourages high ECOLOGICAL, ETHICAL and
SOCIAL STANDARDS in the way they do
business. SUSTAINABLE ANIMAL
WELFARE and CARE play a central role.
Being an island protects the sheep from
parasites and illnesses – instead the
animals enjoy the wide open SPACE of
the Australian grasslands.
The shearing process has hardly
changed over the centuries. To this day it
consists of pure MANUAL WORK with
gentle yet HIGH-PERFORMANCE
SHEARING MACHINES, which requires
full physical application. A top sheep
provides up to 10 KG OF WOOL, a good
shearer shears up to 180 ANIMALS
DAILY – that is 1,800 KG of wool per
shearer per day!
ODOR NEUTRALITY – The fibers‘
protein structures destroy odor-forming
bacteria.
BREATHABILITY – Merino fibers absorb
moisture and wick this away from the
skin to the outside.
TEMPERATURE REGULATION – Merino
fibers are active fibers. They keep you
warm in winter and cool in summer.
Converting greasy new wool into a collection of smooth fibers
takes five steps:
1. WOOL SCOURING – grease and dirt are removed
2. During CARDING, the last residue is removed
3. Fibers are BUNDLED and ALIGNED
4. Matted and short fibers are COMBED OUT
5. The wool is ALIGNED another TWO TIMES
WEAVING produces READY-MADE
LENGTHS OF MATERIAL. At least two
threads are interlaced at right angles
and woven into different patterns.
ANTISTATIC – Due to its moistureabsorbing properties, the fiber is less
statically charged and therefore attracts
less fluff and dust.
The FINISHING PROCESS ensures
that the fibers FEEL soft, LOOK
IMMACULATE and the final products
DoES NOT SHRINK. For this purpose
the fabrics are GENTLY WASHED and
then treated with a STEAM PRESS.
Sewing the lengths of material to make
an end product requires EXTENSIVE
EXPERIENCE and a STEADY HAND.
Done properly, the fabric will not form
waves and the individual fibers will not
become frayed. After extensive QUALITY
CONTROL, the products are carefully
folded and PACKED BY HAND.
During the KNITTING process, LOOPS
OF YARN are repeatedly KNITTED
TOGETHER to form a fabric. New loops
are drawn through existing ones to
create a stable structure.
UV-RESISTANCE – Merino wool offers
better protection than most synthetic
fibers.
RENEWABILITY – Every year a merino
sheep grows a new fleece.
merino info
During the SPINNING PROCESS the wool
fibers are spun into LARGE REELS OF
YARN. During this process the fibers are
DRAWN and TWISTED TOGETHER. Only
high quality worsted yarn is used for
fine ORTOVOX merino clothing.
The next process for the spun yarn
depends on the final product.
ELASTICITY – Merino wool can be
expanded without losing its original
shape.
DEGRADABILITY – As wool is a natural
product, it is part of the natural cycle
and can therefore degrade when it is
composted.
EASY CARE – Many merino products
can be washed in the washing machine
and should then be hung to dry.

today‘s competitive marketplace. TWC has
strong partnerships with a global supply
chain including designers, retailers, brands,
garment manufacturers, knitters, weavers,
and early stage processors. The company

suitable supply chain partners.
Swisswool
Our new Insulation line contains Swiss wool. This
is the finest virgin wool with Swiss origins from
the canton of Wallis. Swisswool places particular
value on sustainable production and regional
origin. Long transport routes are therefore a taboo.
Virgin wool is extremely lightweight and has
excellent insulation properties. Numerous
air pockets are created around the virgin wool,
which can store large volumes of heat. If you pack
the clothing items together, the air escapes and
the products can be compressed to extremely
small sizes.
Material swisswool
88 % Virgin wool + 12 % Polylactide (corn-based)
Toray
SchOEller Naturetec Advantage
It is extremely breathable (20.000 g/m²/24h),
windproof and completely waterproof
(26.000 mm H2O). Maximum diffusion to the
outside is guaranteed even with minimal care.
Dermizax EV is best suited for intensly active
sports – the membrane has a 200% stretch
capacity with no risk of separation. We use
an inner lining of lightweight Merino mesh
to maximize the clothing’s ability to manage
body temperature.
Advantage
The material is extremely breathable while
still offering protection against the wind, light
precipitation and dirt. The material’s surface has
a microstructure which permanently sheds water
and dirt. The symbiosis between Merino wool
and Schoeller softshell is extremely robust
and stretchy – making it ideal for intensively
active sports. Merino wool against the skin
provides pleasant wear comfort and ideal body
temperature management whatever the weather
or temperature.
For our hardshell collection, we exclusively use the
Dermizax EV membrane from Toray. Compared
to standard membranes, the Toray membrane is
intelligent. It works best when warm. It does not
consist of micro-pores but of a compact structure.
Material Toray
Outer: 100 % Polyamide
Membran: Dermizax EV, Polyurethan
Inside: 100 % Polyamide
Tencel®
Tencel® is a natural fiber obtained from
eucalyptus cellulose. It is extremely soft and
therefore ideally suited to people with sensitive
skin. The cooling effect regulates the body
temperature in a natural way.
66
We have eliminated any membrane in our
schoeller® Softshell products. The fine Merino
fibers are directly woven together with the
softshell material.
Material softshell naturetec
74 % Polyamide + 20 % Virgin wool (Merino) +
6 % Elastane
Supersoft stands for a combination of the finest
Merino wool and Lenzing Modal. Modal is used
on the inside and is as soft as silk. Modal is a
pure, natural fiber manufactured from beech wood
cellulose. The fiber comes solely from wood from
sustainably managed beech forests. Lenzing is the
perfect companion to the functionality of Merino
fiber – a scratch-free material meets the popular
Merino properties. Ideally suited for highly
sensitive skin!
Material merino supersoft
53 % Virgin wool (Merino) + 43 % Lenzing Modal +
4 % Polyamide
Loden
Loden Steiner has been producing specialty wools
since 1888. The material we use is extremely
breathable and resistant. The surface is
Teflon-treated – and therefore waterresistant and
ideal for use in our ‘Aletsch’ ski pants.
Merino Softshell Our new softshell collection offers protection and
the popular Merino climate control. We adhere
different Merino mesh thicknesses (100/150 g)
directly to the nylon shell. The result is a windand water-resistant product that functions
without a membrane and is therefore extremely
breathable. Through the body-area-specific
distribution of different material thicknesses (MCM
= Merino Comfort Mapping), we offer the
different areas of the body precisely the temperature range they need.
Merino Fleece (MI)
Represents the ultimate in functionality. We
combine the finest Merino wool with the polyester
& elastane shell. We deliberately avoid using a
membrane so as not to lay any obstacles in the
way of breathability. The material is extremely
stretchy and robust and impresses through
its sensational body temperature control due to
the brushed Merino wool on the inner side.
Material Merino Fleece (Mi)
69 % Polyester + 27 % Virgin wool (Merino) +
4 % Elastane
Material Merino Softshell
Inside 100 % Virgin wool (Merino)
Outer 96 % Nylon + 4 % Elastane
Superfabric
We use Superfabric for sharp-edge protection on
theinside of our hard and softshell pants. The
material is 100 % cut-resistant and protects
the material beneath it.
Merino Competition
Our most sporty line is nearly seamless, using a
circular knitting process. This process enables us
to position different material thicknesses on
different body areas. The base consists of
190 g Merino, a thin Merino mesh is applied to
areas of heavy perspiration, 240 g Merino is used
for particularly cold-sensitive areas and an elastic
ribbed structure is used in areas that require great
freedom of movement.

Merino 240
The 240 gram collection is lined with terry cloth.
The terry cloth lining creates excellent wear
comfort while the terry cloth loops trap air and
create an additional temperature cushion.
Material Merino 240
100 % Virgin wool (Merino)
Classic wool
Our Classic Wool line is made of 100 % pure virgin
wool. Virgin wool has the distinct advantage of
trapping a great deal of air and thus providing
warmth even when wet. Depending on the
product, we use 2, 3 or 4 strands of yarns. More
yarn strands mean more protection and more
warmth.

From 0 to over 8000 meters in the shortest of time! Not
many people can claim to have done this, but ALIX VON
MELLE can. When the woman born in Hamburg
encountered the mountains for the first time in 1991, it
was LOVE at first sight. A skiing trip in the Arlberg soon
turned into crossing the Bernese Oberland on skis, the
first high mountain following in 1998 with the 6969m
Aconcagua and in 2006 the Gasherbrum II, her first
EIGHT THOUSAND METER PEAK. Alix now ventures
into the death zone almost every year. 2008 Nanga
Parbat, 2009 Dhaulagiri, 2010 Makalu and finally
2011 Broad Peak. What started as a minor love affair
has become her greatest PASSION in the meantime,
which she is fortunately able to share with her
husband and expedition partner, Luis. Alix, petite and
always good natured, has progressed in the shortest
period to become the BEST GERMAN HIGH-ALTITUDE
MOUNTAINEER.
ORTOVOX congratulates her on this
phenomenal performance!

backpacks
Four years after the company‘s foundation in 1981 we developed our
first BACKPACK MODEL. We realized 27 years ago that a backpack is
an essential part of a full set of EMERGENCY EQUIPMENT (avalanche
transceiver, shovel, probe). The models developed back then were still
archaically called “DEEP SNOW BACKPACKS”, yet already followed
the safety principle back in 1985 that still inspires us to this day in all
product ranges. During over a quarter of a century‘s experience in
designing backpacks, a number of INNOVATIONS can be attributed to
us. Standard features like a SAFETY COMPARTMENT, which allows
quick access to the emergency equipment, or access to the main
compartment via the back system, were established by ORTOVOX.
Today our backpacks stand for the highest QUALITY, innovative
DETAILS, FUNCTIONALITY as well as unique DESIGN, based on a vast
wealth of experience.

The new BLIZZARD 35 is equipped to become a SKI TOUR
CLASSIC! When developing it, the focus was on WEIGHT REDUCTION, without having to compromise on FUNCTIONALITY.
Lightweight materials, few clasps and straps distinguish the
sleek, exterior design of the BLIZZARD. The back system is
reinforced with an aluminum T-rail, which supports the light
Lycra padding. Hip belt and shoulder straps are anatomically
shaped and made of breathable hollow foam.

Our FREE RIDE line stands for TÜV-CERTIFIED safety! At the
heart of the system is the back protector consisting of a 5-layer
synthetic material. It is protected from slipping by the wide
neoprene hip belt and the anatomically shaped shoulder straps,
thus providing OPTIMUM PROTECTION.
The whole SILHOUETTE of the FREE RIDER forms a unit with the

polyester 600 D
The most robust yarn that we use to make our
backpacks. It is used in all the places that are
exposed to particular stresses and strains.
Lycra
All of our back pads are Lycra-coated. Lycra
provides an extremely smooth finish and thus
outstanding wear comfort. The surface structure is
so refined that not even snow will stick to it –
making it ideal for our winter backpacks!
Nylon 500 D
Highly resistant yarn that we use in the areas of
our backpacks on which the greatest pressures
are exerted.
O-Flex-Frame
The back system was developed in collaboration
with physicians from the Rückenzentrum München
(Munich Back Center). It evenly distributes the load
between the shoulders and the hips, providing
greater wear comfort and muscle relief.
SPS – Backprotektor
Effectively protects your back against injuries. Five
sandwiched layers form the TÜV-certified
protector. The neoprene hip belt fastens the back
protector in place and provides optimal fit with
every movement. To ensure maximum protection,
we offer different protector lengths, which are
reflected by different volumes.
Polygiene
To combat odor-causing bacteria, we use the 100%
natural silver compound Polygiene in our
backpacks’ carrying system.
Nylon 420 D Velocity
A slightly thinner yarn with an impressively glossy
finish and attractive appearance. The yarn is used
when we need to develop lightweight products.
Hypalon
We were one of the first companies to use
hypalon to manufacture backpacks. The material is
now used anywhere that sharp, pointed items
could damage a backpack. Hypalon is nearly
unbreakable.

blind trust
on SHISHA
PANGMA
ATHLETe Andy Holzer
PHOTOs Udo Ebner, Andreas Unterkreuter
LOCATION Shisha Pangma, 8027m
ANDY HOLZER has been BLIND since
birth. The lack of visual sense does not
stop him from leading a fully NORMAL
LIFE, however. On the contrary - he just
sees the world through different eyes.
When other people see wonderful mountain panoramas, for Andy an image
emerges from other people‘s descriptions, from smells, by feeling or tasting
things around him. Blind people‘s
POWER OF IMAGINATION allows images
that are just as colorful as those witnessed by sighted people.
84
What makes Andy different from other
blind people, however, is his outstanding
PASSION for MOUNTAINEERING.
Mountaineering in its many facets,
without compromise. Even though in
summer he climbs through terrifying
rock walls (even as the LEAD CLIMBER),
or climbs high mountains in foreign
countries, in winter it is at least equally
incredible that he even overtakes
sighted skiers on steep descents.
In May 2011 Andy Holzer traveled to Tibet with three
friends, aiming to reach his first 8,000-meter summit
in the form of Shisha Pangma. We spoke to him after
his return.
Andy, the long walk-ins to the base camp
through scree fields and poor paths
placed extreme demands on you. How do you
navigate in such conditions?
My friends help me along with the patience of a saint,
by exactly describing the ground, which is made up
of a maze of differently shaped blocks of stone and a
wide variety of cracks and crevasses.
Such a bone-breaking flat block terrain almost
breaks my morale. Walking with a backpack through
loose terrain with a high risk of injury, it really is the
most difficult thing to keep your balance on razorsharp rocky edges for many hours without eyesight.
For example, an 800 m high steep rock wall, like the
one I was able to enjoy in August on the Marmolada
south face, caused me much less of a sweat.
There is not much anyone can do in mountaineering without companions. What value do
you place on friendship, especially on your
expeditions?
My friend is a part of myself. He does things without
which I would be stuck. I prepare the way for him to be
able to climb in this area at all, by organizing the often
extremely expensive expeditions for my team. That
results in a wonderful synergy in the most natural
manner.
High mountains also hold dangers. Wouldn‘t
the loss of your companions be life-threatening for you too?
That is why I also have to calculate in a quite different
way. My team and I can only be on the move up there at
a maximum rate of 70%. So every meter climbed
together counts more than double. When you often
hear that high-altitude mountaineers get egoistic up in
the death zone because they suddenly start walking
just for themselves, then that is not quite right. Because of my need to always climb close to my partner,
in my experience this becomes almost impossible so
far up. It is really only a coincidence if you can walk
with someone else at the same speed above 7,000 m.
Everyone goes at their own rate at the limit. So if my
friend walks a tad too fast for me, I am exhausted in no
time at all. It is exactly the same the other way round.
The slower person puts the faster one at risk of
freezing. If I am 10m away from my partner, I am practically walking alone because I can no longer make out
his crampons. That is why we have to find our synchronicity, which gives us big opportunities to reach the
summit, but also provides more safety that we definitely need.
through Europe to my lecture tours, my friends drive
my car to our mountain expeditions. In return I take
over the necessary organization: making phone calls
or writing emails, which is easy for me with my
voice-controlled computer.
Unfortunately it was not enough to make
the summit on Shisha. What was the reason
for that?
My energy was out of sync with my friends. On 17 May
I got up shortly after 8.00 in the morning with decent
weather at approx. 7,700 meters and had nobody left
who could get to the top with me. Up on the firn I use
relatively much less energy and am then fairly
relaxed on the route, which then takes it out of the
others. It is exactly the other way round, down at
6,000 m on the difficult block terrain. So the only
thing left was to return with my friends.
4 weeks in tents, with a modest menu, the
same people around you. What did you miss
most?
My wife, my family and the warmth of my home. Of
course I was prepared for that, which is why it was no
problem for me.
Why ORTOVOX?
ORTOVOX is like a small family for me. You supported
me when I was a nobody! For me the products are
authentic and exactly what I need up there.
For a sighted person, driving a car or writing
emails present no particular challenges.
How do you get by?
My wife Sabine drives me thousands of kilometers

Emergency products form the ROOTS of our business. We stand for SAFETY,
CONFIDENCE, RELIABILITY and endless PIONEERING SPIRIT. Over the past
32 years, ORTOVOX has revolutionized the avalanche transceiver market and
enriched it with continual new technologies: in 1980 we presented the first
avalanche transceiver that was able to search and transmit on the two
predominating frequencies at the time. In 1989 we introduced the F1 – the
first device to enable VISUAL SEARCHING. In the following decades, LEDs
became the industry standard. Optical searching reached its CLIMAX in 2007
with the S1, with the RELATIVE POSITION of burial victims indicated on a
large display. Just three years later we invented the SMART ANTENNA
TECHNOLOGY ™ which for the first time allows transmission on two antennas. All of them innovations that can save lives in an emergency. German
innovations completely developed and produced by ORTOVOX.

ZOOM concentrates on intuitive usability. The focus on the clearly designed
LED display is on the on / off switches and the switch between transmitting
and searching. Distances, directional arrows and information about several avalanche victims guide you in the FASTEST way to the refined search area, with
the INTUITIVE search acoustics making victims easier to locate. Equipped with
the patented SMART ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY, avalanche victims are found
much better with the ZOOM. The device analyzes its position in the avalanche
and automatically switches to the BEST TRANSMISSION ANTENNA.
The latest digital 3-antenna technology is taken for granted at ORTOVOX just as
much as the automatic switchover in case of a follow-up avalanche.

Intuitive design
We designed the ZOOM for EASE OF USE. Just two buttons make operating errors
practically impossible. Once switched on, it is possible to switch between transmission
and search mode using the safety switchover button. Subsequent search instructions
are given on the large LED display. An all-round soft rubber ring guarantees easy
HANDLING and additional PROTECTION. We have secured the ZOOM from being lost
with an elastic hand strap and a COMFORTABLE BAG.
Visual + acoustic search
The ZOOM focuses the person searching on the LARGE DISPLAY in the middle of the
device. LEDs are used to show the distance to the victim, the direction using arrows
and if there is more than one victim. Large LEDs are easy to read especially in poor
visibility conditions and at night. The VISUAL SEARCH mode is supported by INTUITIVE
search acoustics. Higher and fast sounds tell you that you are approaching the
avalanche victim.
Smart-Antenna Technology
The integrated SMART-ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY analyzes the position of the antennas
in the avalanche and automatically switches to the best transmission antenna. The
result: 43% more RANGE in the worst reception area. The patented Smart Antenna
Technology is compatible with all avalanche transceivers, in other words regardless of
which device the person searching is using.

The ZOOM’s complete electronics are checked when it is turned on (SELF TEST) and
constantly monitored while in use. In case of a burial, once search mode has been activated, rescuers get an initial signal at 40 METERS and are able to make use of a search
strip width of the same size.
Without having to compromise on transmission time, the ZOOM SAVES on the
ENVIRONMENT and your WALLET! One AA battery is sufficient for 250 hours in
transmission mode.

The ZOOM is equipped with the LATEST, digital 3-ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY and with a
motion sensor. This is required for SWITCHING OVER IN CASE OF A FOLLOW-UP

while searching, it automatically switches back to transmission mode. Rescuers are
thereby protected from follow-up avalanches at all times.

The 3+ is a 3-antenna device with a special extra function with which you can, for the
first time, add to your own safety. The intelligent position recognition analyses the
position of the antennas and automatically switches to the best transmission
antenna: a buried transmitter can no longer be “in the worst position”.
FAST FIND
The circular display guides you to concentrate on the most important things: the
distance to and the relative position of the buried victim. Always align the device
with the arrow. The solid arrow and the central distance value keep you going in the
right direction.
FINE SEarch
The circular display shows you at a glance if you are getting closer to the signal
or moving away from it. With the precise distance value you can very effectively
determine the distance to the buried victim and limit the area to be probed.
easy mark
The 3+ also allows you to maintain an overview with multiple burials. The number
of victims is displayed. As soon as you have found the first one you can eliminate that
signal with the flagging button. The victim is displayed as flagged and you can
immediately continue with your search.
Update
Development is an ongoing process. To ensure that you too can benefit from the latest findings in the field of avalanche technology, we have made the 3+ upgradeable.

The S1+ combines the success stories of two unique avalanche transceiver
innovations: the DISPLAY SHOWING THE RELATIVE POSITION OF AVALANCHE
VICTIMS and the SMART-ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY!
Handling the device is more intuitive than ever. Once switched on, it transmits, but when opened up it switches straight to search mode. The illuminated 360° REAL-TIME DISPLAY shows the position in the avalanche and gives
UNMISTAKABLE ACTION INSTRUCTIONS. As soon as the person searching
begins the pinpoint search, the PATENTED CIRCULAR display and
INTUITIVE SEARCH ACOUSTICS help the location process. Located victims
can now be flagged and the search can continue. FOLLOW-UP AVALANCHE
SWITCHOVER and SMART-ANTENNA TECHNOLOGY provide a safety plus for
the user, while the ECONOMIC POWER MANAGEMENT protects the environment and your wallet – just two batteries are sufficient for 250 hours in

DRASTIC REDUCTION IN RANGE
A vertical antenna transmission is extremely difficult for searchers to locate! Signal range
depends primarily on the search device’s orientation in relation to the transmitter. Horizontally oriented antennas pointing toward each other afford the greatest range. Range is poor if the transmitter is vertically
oriented.

Shovel Kodiak
On our top model KODIAK, we make no COMPROMISES. As a
base material we use 6061 aluminum T6 - the most suitable
material in shovel construction. It is light, stiff and extremely
robust. The combination of D-HANDLE and the voluminous
shovel scoop enables economical and ergonomic shoveling. The
OVAL SHAFT is TELESCOPIC and features a SANDED HANDLING SURFACE for optimum grip. The large shovel scoop gives
plenty of lift. Thanks to the non-slip tread and sharp blade, it
glides through even icy snow. Totally unique to the market is the
EASY-PLUG SCOOP FUNCTION on the Kodiak. The position of
the shovel scoop can be changed in seconds, thus turning the
shovel into a hatchet. The scoop is on a STABLE SHAFT made of
aluminum.

probes
Without an avalanche probe you will lose vital
time when searching for buried victims. At
ORTOVOX we differentiate between three different
materials: carbon, steel and aluminum. CARBON
is our PREMIUM MATERIAL. It is light and extremely stable, yet consequently somewhat more
expensive. Steel is stiff but heavy and hence most
suitable for professional operations. That makes
ALUMINUM the first choice material for most
winter sports enthusiasts: LIGHT and STABLE.
The diameter and the draw-cord system also
have an effect on weight and stability. The basic
principle is: the heavier, thicker and more robust,
the more stable and vice versa.
What characterizes all ORTOVOX probes* is the
tensioning system. Our PATENTED PFA QUICK
assembly SYSTEM is seen as the FASTEST and
MOST RELIABLE SYSTEM IN THE WORLD.
In this respect the probe is quickly and securely
tensioned with one movement and relaxed again
by pressing the quick-release lock with your
thumb. Extremely fast, reliable
and convenient.

6061 aluminum T6
The strongest aluminum available - used in our
high-end safety products for optimal balance between weight and rigidity. The 6061 aluminium T6
is used in all ORTOVOX shovel shafts and the blade
of the KODIAK.
5052 aluminum
D-handle
The D-handle is regarded as the king of all
handles. Its orientation and ergonomics allow for
maximum lift. Thus you can remove more snow
without tiring.
Saw
This type of aluminium is light yet rigid and,
therefore, our first choice for many of our shovel
scoops.
A wood and snow saw is integrated in the Beast
Saw‘s shaft. Ideal for snowmobilers entangled
with brush. The saw clears the way for you. You
can also use the saw to carve snow profiles or to
cut ice blocks for building an igloo.
Conical Shaft
scoop function Kodiak
The shovel shaft has an oval cross section. The
failure characteristics are thus much higher than
round cross sections. The same is true for the
stiffness. The force transmission and thus the
shovelling performance are much higher. Most of
our shovel shafts are telescopic – this reduces the
pack size and enables economic handling.
104
The Kodiak‘s entrenching action is the strongest on
the market. The shovel blade is slid onto the shaft
at a 90° angle. Thus aluminium fits on aluminium – a virtually indestructible combination. The
entrenching action significantly assists the
rescue of buried victims with two or more helpers.
probes
PFA-Assembly system
“Patented Flash Assembly“ stands for reliable tensioning within seconds and just as quick release
and folding. Tensioning: simply hold the last
element and remove the cap. The elements are
secured and the probe is ready for use. Release:
engage the quick release and the probe is ready to
be folded.
Carbon
Our premium probes are made of carbon. The
material is extremely stiff, yet very light. Another
advantage is the low thermal conductivity of the
material – the probe is more resistant to freezing.
Steel
Steel is extremely rigid and sturdy. When weight
is not a factor, but reliability and probing accuracy
play a major role, steel is the first choice!
7075 aluminum T6
Light and stiff and thus the aluminium of our
choice for all aluminium probes. We use different
tube diameters between 11 and 13 mm - meaning:
the thicker the diameter, the heavier and stiffer the
probe.
Steel cable pull line
Our most reliable pull line system. For a little extra
weight, you get maximum safety.
Dyneema® Reepschnur
The material is light and robust and therefore
perfect for our high-end probes.

largest possible search strip width
Conventional avalanche transceivers also use
the X-antenna to transmit in case of a vertical
burial position. Due to the physics, this results
in a low range for the person searching and
an inaccurate direction display. The result: the
SEARCH STRIP WIDTH REDUCES dramatically
and the burial victim is VERY DIFFICULT TO
FIND.
The patented Smart-Antenna Technology can
solve the negative position problem. The
position sensor in the latest generation of
ORTOVOX avalanche transceivers analyzes
the position of the transmitting device in the
avalanche and, in case of an angle of 75° or
more, automatically switches to the Y antenna.
The range and direction display are thereby
improved and AVALANCHE VICTIMS ARE
FOUND MUCH easier and faster!

The illustration shows different transmission signals. They are accurately
defined in EN300718, yet allow a CERTAIN TOLERANCE. EVERY AVALANCHE
TRANSCEIVER therefore has its OWN TRANSMISSION SIGNAL, comparable to
the human fingerprint.
TRANSMISSION PULSE – Pulse width of transmitted signal, measured in ms.
approx. 700 – 1300 ms
Number of accidents
approx. 100 ms
53

1
PULSe-PERIOD – Width of transmitted signal and pause, measured in ms.
Avalanche burials with more than one person are NOT A RARE EVENT. Locating
more than one signal often represents a challenge for many avalanche transceivers and can make a quick and efficient location process difficult. Only devices
with SHARP SIGNAL ANALYSIS and RELIABLE flagging FUNCTION can SAVE
VITAL TIME here.

– 1999).
approx. 600 - 1200 ms
OFF-TIME – Time between end of signal 1 and the start of signal 2, measured in ms.
Every year approx. 150,000 AVALANCHE TRANSCEIVERS are sold worldwide.
In this respect, most avalanche transceivers require three to FOUR BATTERIES to achieve the transmission period specified in the standard. As batteries
should be changed at least ONCE A SEASON, that means an ANNUAL BURDEN
on the environment of approx. 450,000 BATTERIES.
The VOLTAGE REGULATOR in the new ORTOVOX DEVICES protects our planet!
Due to the MORE ECONOMIC POWER CONSUMPTION, most ORTOVOX devices
manage with just a SINGLE AA BATTERY.
TRANSMISSION SIGNAL OVERLAPPING
In the event of a multiple burial, the individual transmission SIGNALS
OVERLAP, making the LOCATING process EXTREMELY DIFFICULT.
If all the avalanche transceiver manufacturers in the world used the ORTOVOX
voltage regulator, we would relieve our WALLETS and the ENVIRONMENT by
almost 300,000 BATTERIES!

safety academy
ORTOVOX DEVICES feature an EXTREMELY PRECISE SIGNAL ANALYSIS.
The microprocessor analyzes the transmission pulse, pulse periods and
off-time of each individual signal precisely and immediately and converts
this into an optic display. The person searching gets a visual display of the
distance, direction and number of victims – even the RELATIVE POSITION OF
THE VICTIMS in the case of the S1+.
Only a SHARP SIGNAL ANALYSIS and the flagging FUNCTION enable several transmission signals to be LOCATED EASILY and EFFECTIVELY.
SAFETY ACADEMY – Basic knowledge avalanche accident
What can be nicer in winter than making turns in DEEP
POWDER on solitary slopes or enjoying the OUTDOORS
on a SKI TOUR. But watch out! No matter what the conditions are, the RISK OF AN AVALANCHE can never be
completely ruled out. Through our SAFETY ACADEMY, we
teach people how to keep the risk as low as possible and
what MEASURES should be taken in case of an avalanche.
If the accident was observed, you should note
the point of disappearance 1 and
coordinate the rescue operation without
delay.
—
If there are several helpers, one alerts the
rescue service (EU 112 / na 911).
—
All helpers switch their transceivers to
search.
—
The search area 2 starts at the point of
disappearance 1 or at the avalanche
back-up area.
1
The subsequently illustrated contents only cover a small
part of the risk management. We have compiled all the
BASIC INFORMATION about avalanche safety in a free booklet. The SAFETY ACADEMY GUIDE BOOK is enclosed with our
POS hardware set or can be downloaded as a catalog online at
ortovox.com.
The SAFETY ACADEMY has also devised TRAINING DOCUMENTS on the subject
of avalanche safety, which represent the opinions of the VDBS. The ORTOVOX
sales team looks forward to receiving inquiries [email protected].

First, you should search the avalanche
deposit with your eyes and ears
for objects or partially buried victims.
—
At the same time, start the signal search.
—
Depending on the number of helpers, the avalanche deposit is searched in parallel
(search strip width approx. 40 m, or 130 ft), or
by meandering with one person searching.
40m
The chance of survival in the first 15 minutes is relatively high at 90%, but
after that drops drastically. Only with:
20m
+ complete emergency equipment
+ a fast rescue operation
+ and lots of training do you have a realistic chance of rescuing the victim.

SAFETY ACADEMY – Basic knowledge avalanche accident
When 2 - 3 meters (6 - 10 feet) away from
the victim, you have to use the device to
search as close as possible above the surface
of the snow crossways and in straight
lines, until you have found the lowest value.
—
The value displayed equates to the victim‘s
depth and you mark the point with crossed
poles.
Modern, digital 3-antenna avalanche
transceivers will show you the direction.
—
You just have to follow the direction
arrow!
—
Distances that get smaller indicate that you
are getting closer to the victim.
Starting from the crossed poles, you now
probe systematically from the inside
outwards until you locate the victim.
—
The probe remains in place and is used for
orientation purposes.
—
Make sure that a possible breathing hole
is not trodden on.
—
Tip: Always probe at a 90° angle to the
surface of the snow.

Help from companions – Pinpoint location (probing)

That is what encouraged me to spend more time as a
photographer. Above all I could combine my hobbies
- photography with climbing and “being the mountains“
very well with each other. Up until 2003 I had a very
normal career as an engineer at Siemens. But over the
years photography increasingly became my passion
and took up more and more of my time. The spark was
lit when I met Stefan Glowacz for the first time
and accompanied him on a trip. Most of my holidays
and any number of flexible working days were planned
for photo projects. I took the decision in 2003 to focus
completely on photography. Since then I‘ve been a
professional photographer.
klaus fengler
photographer
Klaus Fengler is living his dream. For 12 years he has
been taking photos at the most unique locations on
earth and accompanying the most varied of characters on the mountain sports scene. Together with the
ORTOVOX team he spent a week in the Lyngen Alps
in April 2011. After a 16 hour day he still had time to
give an interview.
Klaus, you only started your photography
career in 2001. How did it come about that
you gave up the job you had at the time?
At some point my hobby became my job. I have taken
photos for 20 years. It all started when some photos
What do you love about being a professional
snapper?
I have always loved travelling and can combine
travelling with taking pictures. I‘m sure I wouldn‘t enjoy
photography if I was only able to work in a studio. I
spend most of my time “on location“ in the open air
doing an outdoor activity. I love it and can really identify
with my work. So over the past 10 years I got to visit
places on earth that hardly anyone else has ever seen.
These experiences are eternal memories immortalized
in photos and I will never forget them. Many of my
experiences are revealed in the book “Climbing
Expeditions at the Ends of the Earth“ and the impressively explain the draw that my job has on me.
You have experienced the most impressive
mountains of this world. Which one stays
most in your memory?
The most impressive of these locations was for sure
the bivouac on Baffin Island in the Buchan Fjord. You
are laying in your warm sleeping bag in the Portaledge
and the sun rises on the horizon and reaches the
bivouac site.
Below you is a closed cover of cloud and below that
the frozen sea. And you are with a friend at a location
that nobody else has ever visited!
Which locations do you still have on your
bucket list?
Asia, maybe China, Mongolia. There are still a few
“white“ areas over there.
For those on tours and free riders Lygnen
is a magical place. What makes it so
attractive?
What makes this region in the north of Norway so
wonderful is that this area is neither overrun yet, nor
is it open to skiers like the Alps are for example.
There are no lifts and free riders first have to use
their own steam to ascend the mountain before they
can enjoy the wonderful descent.
It is so beautiful to always see the ocean when you
descend and the flair and mentality of the Norwegians is also very pleasant.
What did you think of the week with the
ORTOVOX team?
It was awesome! I have visited Lyngen twice before
but this week was the first time that we arrived at
our tour destination by sail boat and the boat was
also our accommodation. Our skipper was great and
the guys and girl from the ORTOVOX team made the
photography a lot of fun. I can really recommend
Lyngen by boat.
