Local AUSA repeats as world’s best chapter
Volunteer, corporate support breed winning programs

A combination of supportive corporate members, loads of dedicated member
volunteers, outstanding events and a patriotic community have, once again, put the
Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of the Association of the U.S. Army on top.
On top, that is, as the 2012 best AUSA chapter in the world.
Success has been part of the chapter’s day-to-day operations for several years as its
members have provided a plethora of events, activities and programs in support of
active duty and Reserve Soldiers, Army civilians, retirees and their families. The
chapter is also involved in community events that gain public awareness of the
Army and its mission. It has won the best chapter every year from 2004 through
2008, and then again in 2010, 2011 and this year.
“The more activities you do and the more reports you submit to national help
your chapter earn points towards this honor,” chapter president Paul Elliott said.
“But we don’t do these things to win an award. We do things to take care of the
Army and Soldiers, DA civilians, retirees and their families. It mounts up to us
doing all these activities that we get credit for at national. At the beginning of the
year, it was not our goal to be chapter of the year. Our goal is always to support the
Army.”
The Redstone-Huntsville Chapter will receive the best chapter of the year award
at AUSA’s annual meeting in Washington, D.C., Oct. 22-24. It will also receive top
honors in several categories, with each represented by an activity streamer added to
the local chapter’s flag.
“We will be receiving activity streamers for everything from the support we give
our veterans to our Army history events to our interaction with elected officials,”
Elliott said. “We are very active in the resolutions process.”

Every year, AUSA presents resolutions to Congress and lobbies for those resolutions on behalf of the Army. For the past 10 years, the Redstone-Huntsville Chapter
has had a representative on the AUSA National Resolutions Committee and, as a
consequence, many of the resolutions presented and passed at the national level
originate with the Redstone-Huntsville Chapter.
“We try to represent the needs of the commands in our chapter,” Elliott said. “Our
chapter is influential on a national basis.”
But that is only one example of the depth of experience and commitment that the
chapter’s volunteers bring to its activities, and how they make a difference in the
local chapter’s track record at the national level.

President’s Message

We have just completed another very successful
year for the Redstone-Huntsville Chapter! The
Chapter’s support to Soldiers and Families (Active,
Guard and Reserve) has been steadfast; outreach,
support and recognition of Department of the Army
Civilians remains a key focus; the honoring of Veteran’s service and sacrifice has been in the forefront;
partnership with the Community has been constant;
and providing worthwhile programs and benefits to
our Membership has been our goal. Thank you to an
outstanding Board, our Sponsors and all the volunteers that worked to make all our programs and events
“happen” this last year.
The recent Veterans Week activities, culminating with the Veterans’ Parade
through downtown Huntsville, served as a continuing tribute to those that have
served and continue to serving a grateful Nation. The Chapter is proud to honor
and recognize the dedication of those that serve so that we all may enjoy the
freedoms of this great country.
We celebrated our successes at the Annual Meeting and welcomed in the
Christmas Holiday season with a combined “Welcome Home” and Christmas
Reception at the Von Braun Center. Several of our members received special
recognition awards for significant contributions to the Chapter. The food was
fantastic, the mood was festive and getting to spend time with our Members
and Guests was the best !
Our Anniston Satellite Chapter is really charging forward. Under the reinvigorated Leadership of Greg Potts and his Board, the Chapter is making a
positive impact in the Anniston Community. Read more about their programs
and activities in Greg’s message.
Our recently established North Alabama Satellite Chapter in Russellville is
also working to support Members in their area. Dr. Tim Guinn, Satellite Chapter
President, recently attended AUSA’s National Leadership Training in St. Louis
and we expect a great program as that Chapter gets up and running.
Kris McBride and I joined the Alabama National Guard for their 376th
Birthday celebration in Montgomery on 13 December. The event focused on the
rich history of the Citizen Soldier and the proud heritage of the Army National
Guard. You can see pictures of that event in this newsletter. We are making plans
to charter a Satellite Chapter in Montgomery to provide better and more direct
interaction with our Membership in that area.
2013 promises to continue the trend of excellence for the Chapter. In January,
we get off to a fast start as the Chapter hosts our 2ND Annual Department of the
Army Civilian Leadership Summit. Rick Turner has a great Professional Development program lined up. Look for information in the Redstone Rocket and
Garrison personnel announcements.
There is a very likely chance that GEN (R) Gordon Sullivan, National President
and Chief Operating Officer of the Association of the United States Army and
32nd Chief of Staff of the Army, will be visiting with us soon. Stay tuned for
more information.

long Veterans Day activities and Armed
Forces Celebration Week. This past
year, several of the chapter’s members
were involved in planning the opening
ceremony for the Huntsville/Madison
County Veterans Memorial.
“We try to fit in with community
events and provide support where it’s
needed,” Elliott said.
In 2012, the chapter also established
its second satellite chapter in Russellville. The Redstone-Huntsville Chapter,
which includes all of North Alabama,
has 2,600 members and 300 corporate
members.
“We want to continue to build our
satellite chapters to make it easier for us
to reach out to retirees, civilians and
the Reserve component,” Elliott said.
Likewise, the chapter wants to continue to build and diversify its individual
and corporate memberships.
“Not all of our corporate members
are defense contractors,” said Kris
McBride, the chapter’s executive vice
president. “We have all kinds of business members who want to support
our Army and Redstone Arsenal.”
That support grows as AUSA works
to tell the Army story.
“The purpose and mission of AUSA
is to support Soldiers and family members,” vice president of special events
John Wright said. “But one of the tasks
of AUSA is to keep in the community
the message that our Soldiers, families
and DA civilians need our support.”
The chapter is glad to receive the top
chapter award in what it considers a
transition year.
“With the move of the Ordnance
Munitions and Electronic Maintenance
School from Redstone, we have lost
our large Soldier base,” Wright said.
“But we have shifted our outreach to
concentrate more on the Reserve component and the DA civilians who are
such a big part of this community.
That’s where we really see our base
membership growing.”
And that’s where they see the
Redstone-Huntsville Chapter of
AUSA continuing to make a winning
difference.

“As a chapter, it’s all a team effort. It
takes a team effort to do all that we
do,” he said. “Many of our volunteers
have been with this chapter for years
and their experience benefits us and
our programs. We have great, dedicated volunteers, board members and
general membership, a supportive
corporate membership and a supportive community.
“Our volunteers do everything from
planning events, to working on the
water brigade at the Concert in the
Park (during Armed Forces Celebration Week) to passing out flags at the
Veterans Day Parade.”
Besides such annual events as the Army
birthday celebration, the Huntsville Stars
and Huntsville Havoc military appreciation nights, DA Civilian of the Year
Award, Tactical Missile Symposium,
high school and college ROTC awards,
the Soldier/NCO of the Year and the
1st Sgt. John Ordway Award, Elliott said
there were two new chapter-sponsored
activities that really stood out in the
2012 chapter year.
The first – the Department of the
Army Civilian Summit – addressed
the needs of the growing DA civilian
population at Redstone Arsenal. The
first ever event featured presentations
from the Arsenal’s civilian leadership
and offered continuing education credit
to those who attended. The event will
be offered again next year in conjunction with the Defense Acquisition
University.
“We value our Department of the
Army civilian membership and the
summit was part of our outreach to
them,” Elliott said.
The second event was the Wounded
Warrior Amputee Softball Tournament
that was part of this year’s annual
Armed Forces Celebration Week. The
tournament brought the national wounded warrior softball team to Huntsville
for three patriotic games that filled the
Sportsplex with cheering fans.

Redstone-Huntsville Chapter Celebrates
Return from 2012 Annual Meeting
More than 300 individual and corporate members joined with Chapter
Officers and Board Members at the
Von Braun Center East Hall on Dec.
4, 2012. The gathering served to celebrate the chapter’s successful trip to
the 2012 Annual Meeting held in
Washington, D.C. during October.
At the annual meeting, the chapter
was recognized as the Best Chapter
Overall for the eighth time in the past
nine years. The celebration coincided
with the chapter’s Holiday Reception
and a general membership meeting.
Paul Elliott, Chapter President,
welcomed all to event. He recognized
military and civilian leadership from
Team Redstone, the cities of Huntsville and Madison, staff members of
the Alabama congressional delegation,
Alabama A&M University faculty
and cadets, and Annual Meeting corporate sponsors. Special recognition
was afforded to the Chapter’s 2012
award winners at the local, regional,
and national level – Ordway (chapter),
Volunteer Family of the Year (chapter), Civilian of the Year (national),
Soldier & NCO of the Year (AMC
and SMDC/ARSTRAT), and Biddle
(national). Paul also presented several
special recognition awards for outstanding leadership in support of
events throughout the year to include
Jeff Wishik, chapter board member,
for his leadership of the recent
Vietnam War Tribute conducted in
September.

Madison County Convention and
Visitors Bureau; special thanks to
Marie Arighi (VBC) and Jo Seay (H/
Award recipients at the Chapter Welcome

agencies in February.
The Chapter nominee selected from among all of the local nominees will be
announced at the dinner and go on to compete for the AUSA Third Region
(Southeast) competition in June. The Region winners are recognized nationally at
the AUSA Annual Meeting in Washington DC in October. The winner in 2012
was Mr. Keith Roberson, Executive Director, Integrated Materiel Management
Center, U.S. Army Aviation and Missile Command (AMCOM). Mr. Roberson
went on to win the Region award and was chosen as the AUSA national DA
Civilian of the Year for 2012.
Other past winners have included: Mr. Lars D. Ericsson, Senior Scientist and
Chief Technical Architect, Unmanned Aviation Systems Project Management
Office, Program Executive Office —Aviation; Ms. Lisha Adams G3 Operations
AMCOM; Mr. Richard Turner, Executive Director of the US Army TMDE
Activity (Mr. Turner went on to win the Region award and was chosen as the
AUSA national DA Civilian of the Year for 2009); Mr. Tim Owings, Deputy
Project Manager, Unmanned Aerial Systems; Mr. Troy Hester, Electronics Engineer,

Anniston Satellite President’s Message
A Merry Hooah Christmas, Fellow AUSAers!
Army Strong holiday greetings from your Southern Satellite Chapter of the Anniston Area.
Since my last message to you all, it has been a busy
and exciting time here in the South. After Lezlee Davis,
our VP for Soldier Support, & I returned from an
educational whirlwind at the National AUSA in DC,
we all needed to spring into action for the next round
of fall activities.
On Thursday, November 8th, we were graced to have
Congressman Mike Rogers, Alabama 3rd District,
speak to 75 members and guests at our General
Membership Breakfast Meeting at Classic on Noble
here in Anniston. Mike spoke at length about issues
still confronting the Nation and the State in general,
and the 3rd District, in particular. Our Army, our
nation’s defense, and homeland security remain at the
top of his concerns and priorities.
Two days later, we were off to Fort McClellan where
COL Chuck Keith, our EVP and Commander of
the Fort McClellan Army National Guard Training
Center, led our effort in sponsoring the 3rd Annual
CPT Kyle Comfort Memorial 5K Run, held to support
the foundation which bears the name of this former
local resident, Jacksonville State University ROTC
Commissionee, and fallen Ranger hero in Afghanistan.
This year’s attendance doubled over last year; all the
runners and walkers crossed the finish line in front of
the AUSA Banner.
The next day, Veterans’ Day, found our chapter
secretary, Rikki Graben, and Max Dodd, our VP for
Membership, in carrying the AUSA Banner, while
waving to and distributing AUSA memorabilia to the
thousands who lined the parade route along Anniston’s
Noble Street for this annual event. Max says we even
got some member inquiries from attendees!
But, now the real work and fun began. Remember in
my last message that I spoke of the 300+ soldiers from
this area of the 167th Infantry Battalion, Alabama
Army National Guard, being deployed to Afghanistan?
Well, under the leadership of Santa’s Chief Elf, VP
for Soldier Support, Lezlee Davis, Christmas would
come to those soldiers in the form of Christmas Care
Packages. Local radio stations promoted, local citizens
donated goods and products at area Wal-Marts / AOD
Federal Credit Union offices / Area Branches of the
FNB of Talladega / Fort
McClellan drop boxes,
elementary school children wrote hundreds of
letters and cards, Pell
City AMVETS posts
campaigned and solicited support, the Anniston
Junior League donated
and packed, the Fort
McClellan Chapter of
the Gold Star Wives
provided many, many
items and significant
cash, and dozens of
citizens and soldiers
donated cash & checks,
and arrived to sort,
pack and ship. Whew! The effort was even bigger than
that sentence!
One of COL Chuck Keith’s operations centers became Rear Log Base 167 IN as many volunteers from
the FMARNG Training Center including Soldiers, DA
Civilians, and retirees pitched in the assembly line to
fill these care packages with as many items as possible
to ensure our soldiers down range will have a very
memorable Christmas! As of COB 5 December…306…
yes, three hundred and six…care package boxes were
en route to the soldiers of the 167th Infantry Battalion.
W-O-W. Great job, Lezlee and Team!
As we wind down another calendar year, and make
plans for the next, may the safety and health of the
men and women who serve this nation, especially
those deployed many miles away in harm’s way, be
foremost in our thoughts and prayers. May we continue to focus on who we are, and what we have been
called to do: AUSA: Voice for the Army, Support for
the Soldier.

(DAC) Leadership Summit on January 31, 2013 from 1 p.m. until 4 p.m. at

Gen. Via Speaks at
Breakfast with the Boss
On Friday 2 November 2012, the
Redstone Huntsville Chapter held a
Breakfast With the Boss, an event
designed to support the Chapter’s
Corporate Members. The event was
co-sponsored by the Tennessee Valley
Chapter of the Army Aviation Association of America (AAAA). The speaker
for the program was GEN Dennis Via,
Commanding General, US Army
Materiel Command, Redstone Arsenal.
Around 200 Corporate Member representatives and other guests gathered
at The Summit on Redstone Arsenal
for the event. The Chapter established
a registration area in the foyer to welcome
guests that started arriving at 6 a.m.

The event started with a welcome by
Mike Barefield, VP for Corporate
Relations. The head tables were introduced and each VIP welcomed to the
event. Lastly, Mike thanked all of the
corporate participants for their generous
and unwavering commitment to the
Army’s soldiers, civilians and families
through their sponsorship of many of
the chapter’s local events and activities.
Mike also gave special thanks to many
of the chapter’s newest corporate
members that included Analytix,
AVNIK Defense Solutions, BlackBear
Industries, EpiQ, General Dynamics
Information Technology, Selex Galileo,
Troy 7, i3 and Navigator Development.
Several representatives from these new
Corporate Member companies were
interspersed at the head tables. After
the Pledge of Allegiance led by Mike
and an invocation led by the Chapter’s
Chaplain, Jim Henderson, attendees
lined up for a delicious buffet breakfast
prepared by the staff of the Summit.
Gary Nenninger, the President of the
Tennessee Valley Chapter of AAAA,
made a short introduction of GEN Via
to the audience. GEN Via quickly took
command of the podium and gave participants an excellent presentation on
the current state of AMC, to include
equipping the joint warfighter, research
and technology, foreign military sales,
the industrial base, sustainment, materiel distribution and a list of five
‘must-dos’ that AMC is working to
accomplish.
GEN Via began his remarks by congratulating the chapter for its eighth
“Best AUSA Chapter” in the world
award for 2012. The chapter has won
the award every year from 2004
through 2008, and then again in 2010,
2011 and this year. “First, we must
continue to be responsive to meeting
the needs of the deployed warfighter
and ensure our Soldiers remain the
best equipped fighting force the world
has ever known. That is AMC’s bottom
line,” Via stated.
GEN Via stressed resetting the force
and ensuring they are ready for the
next contingency. He also discussed
the industrial base. “We must preserve
our organic industrial base, our arsenals,
depots and ammunition plants, which
are the center piece of Army readiness,”
Via said.
The industrial base is made up of
approximately 32 sites across the United
States that manufacture, refurbish and
reset the Army’s tanks, automotive,
aviation, missile, C4

continue to invest
in science and technology, operational
energy, to ensure we

scientists and engineers for the future.
“From thousands of skilled, trained
personnel who work at our depots and
arsenals, to engineers and scientists
engaged in some of the most advanced
research projects in the world: to the
commanders, Department of the Army
Civilians, officers, non-commissioned
officers, and managers that lead our
organizations and activities – the foundation of our success will remain our
people,” he said.

has successfully reached a “BRACsteady state” after cutting the ribbon
on its Huntsville home nearly 18

solidified their presence in the local
community, in your neighborhoods,
in your schools, in your places of
worship, and in your many community
organizations and activities,” he continued. “I’ve lived in many communities
throughout the United States over the

here shares a special bond with Redstone
and we are proud to call the Tennessee
Valley our home.”
He also highlighted that AMC benefits from the synergy existing with the
co-located commands, long established
relationships, local research and development, science and technology
sectors, the presence of the defense
industry, academia and support of the
local community.

The National
Guard Turns 376
Born from humble beginnings, the
National Guard celebrates its 376th birthday

The military organization we know today as the National Guard came
into existence with a direct declaration on December 13, 1636. On this
date, the Massachusetts General Court in Salem, for the first time in the
history of the North American continent, established that all able-bodied
men between the ages of 16 and 60 were required to join the militia. The
North, South, and East Regiments were established with this order. The
decree excluded ministers and judges. Simply stated, citizen-soldiers who
mustered for military training could be and would be called upon to fight
when needed.
MONTGOMERY, Alabama – Joint Force Headquarters in Montgomery,
Alabama held a ceremony to honor the birthday of the organization.
Two cakes were donated by the Association of the United States Army,
Redstone-Huntsville Chapter, which were cut by the oldest and youngest
soldiers present, as is Army tradition.
“Whether it’s natural disasters, homeland security, or major wars, today’s
National Guard members and yesterday’s minutemen remain the same
person: citizen-soldiers with the conviction that their military service requires
to make their nation and communities a safer and better place to live,” said
State Command Sgt. Maj. Eddie Pike.
“National Guard units have fought in every major war this country has
been involved in,” said Brig. Gen. Allen Harrell, Alabama National Guard
Director of the Joint Staff.
“The Guard today is comprised
of approximately 464,000
personnel. We have the most
modern aircraft, helicopters,
tanks, artillery pieces...it’s a
very proud organization, and
it all started 376 years ago with
people just like you.”

Team Redstone Running Team at the Army Ten-Miler: Two More Victories!

streak in Army Ten-Miler

Redstone Arsenal’s Ten-Miler Team has continued its unprecedented winning
streak in the 28-year history of the Army Ten-Miler. Redstone’s team won its
sixth straight title in the government division and its fourth straight title in the
all comers division. The 2012 race had 60 teams in the all comers division and
30 teams in the government division.
Members of the 2012 team include coach Dr. Harry Hobbs (Madison), assistant
coach Skip Vaughn (Huntsville), Erik DeBolt (Madison), Alex Gornik (Huntsville), Col. John Hamilton (Redstone Arsenal), George Heeschen (Huntsville),
Randy McFarland (Huntsville), Tim Pitt (Arab), Joseph Robenson (Madison),
Brad Schroeder (Owens Cross Roads), Sgt. Maj. Corey Smallwood (Huntsville),
Tim Vinson (Madison), Rob Whitaker (Owens Cross Roads), Brett Wilks
(Huntsville), Rob Youngren (Huntsville) and Brandon York (Madison).
In this year’s Army Ten-Miler, held Oct. 21 near the Pentagon, York finished
17th overall out of nearly 22,000 finishers in 50 minutes and 44 seconds.
The Ten-Miler team represents a cross section of Redstone Arsenal including
active duty and retired military, Army civilian workers and contractor employees.
The members are dedicated runners who train year-round on their own and at
least eight weeks as a team.
They also give back to the Redstone community as volunteers. They assist as a
group in annual activities at Redstone Arsenal including concerts, festivals and
community running events.
