During the week leading up to the Super Bowl,
my mind drifted away from the game itself, and
I started thinking about the history of the teams.
Actually, I was comparing them with what we’ve
gone through. For the past few years, the
Cardinals have been pre-season picks by many
to finally break through and make a little run in
the play-offs. Well, they have now joined the
long list of teams to make it to the “Big Game”
before the Lions. Then, you’ve got Pittsburgh!
While Detroit has had a constant turnover in
coaches, here is a franchise that has had only “3” in “30” years and
they’ve all made it to at least one Super Bowl! You have to wonder
how organizations at the same competitive level can be so different.
When you take a closer look at these two cities, it’s even more mindboggling! While Detroit has an NFL team that set a record for futility in
2008, it also has an NHL team that is so good that it is just ho-humming
its way along until the Stanley Cup Play-Offs begin. In Pittsburgh, after
the fans enjoy another fine season with the Steelers, they then have to
endure the Pirates, who have the opportunity in 2009 to set the record
in MLB for the longest streak of losing seasons in the history of the
game. You talk about enduring the opposite ends of the spectrum in
sports within two cities!

FARM BUREAU OF MICHIGAN
THE MICHAEL CARR AGENCY
Is your insurance up to date? Are you sure you have the right amount
of coverage? The beginning of the year is a good time to take a look
at that particular aspect of your life. Mike Carr is a local agent for Farm
Bureau Insurance, Michigan’s Insurance Company and he would like
to help you with that.
I recently mentioned that I just didn’t have a good feeling about the
Pistons. Nothing has happened to change my mind about that! On the
other hand, I’ve been trying to laud the exploits of upcoming teams,
such as New Orleans and Orlando. Forget about it! No need to get
all upset with the Pistons, and, as for the rest, they’re all pretenders!
It’s Boston & the Lakers! You might as well start the NBA Finals right
now!
Mike has been a Farm Bureau agent for the past 5 1/2 years. He
provides some of the best life, home, auto, farm and commercial insurances available in Michigan. Throughout its history, Farm Bureau
Insurance has recognized the special needs of its clients, the people
of Michigan. While everyone needs insurance protection, the needs
are unique in every case. The best way to give the client the best
possible coverage is to understand the unique needs of the client, and
Mike Carr is an agent that will take the time to learn what he needs to
know to advise people on what products would benefit them.
Well, the carrousel of no. 1’s in college basketball continues. They
don’t even last a week! If you’ll recall, as the “pre-season” was winding
down, and North Carolina was riding along as no. 1, and Conference
play was about to begin, I alluded to the fact that it was now a whole
new ballgame. Conference play is tough! The great thing is that, unlike
college football, it will all be decided when “March Madness” begins.
Mike is a long time member of this community. He is married to Kathy
and his daughters are Erin and Ashley. Mike has been active in local
youth sports and therapeutic horse back riding. He is also involved
with the local Chamber of Commerce and through his contacts there,
he has met many wonderful local business people who he trusts to
provide goods and services to him. Because he has this extensive
network, he can share that with his clients and is the “go-to” guy when
his clients need something, even if it’s not insurance at the moment!
I mentioned that the Red Wings have the luxury of picking and choosing
the games to get fired up for. They’ve got everything in place and just
entertaining us until April. The Icehawks have no such luxury! They
have a nice grip on first place, and they are play-off bound, but there is
no time to relax. Their being in first place is no fluke; right now they are
the best team in the IHL. But, there is such a fine line when comparing
the top teams that you can’t afford to take some time off, and then turn
it on two months from now. They’ve got such a good thing going that
the word “relax” shall be stricken from their vocabulary. Every game
is a stepping stone, trying to keep their game at the current level, or
above. It’s very demanding, but the next two months will be a work
in progress, in order to be totally ready for what appears to be some
great, competitive play-off hockey!

BUSINESS, YOUR FUTURE
The NHL All-Star game was very entertaining. The East beat the West
“12-11” in a shootout. If I was a goalie, and I was voted onto the All-Star
team, I would say, “Thanks! But, No Thanks! I appreciate the honor,
but you’ll have to get someone else. Instead, I’m going to go hold up
targets for amateur night at the local shooting range!”

I’m sure, by now, most of you have heard about the girls’ high school
basketball game in Texas, where one team beat up on an opponent,
consisting of players with learning disabilities, by the score of “100-0”.
Some folks have come to the defense of the winning coach, who, by
the way, was fired. In my mind, there would have been lots of ways to
keep the score down. There was no way they were going to lose the
game; how about creating your own disability and taking all shots with
the wrong hand? I am, by no means, a saint! But, if I was playing, I
would have put one in the wrong basket in the fourth quarter, just to
eliminate a shut-out being in the books.

Let’s talk some gardening! This is for those of you who
want a little vegetable garden, but don’t want to make it
another full-time occupation. So, now is a good time to
decide what to plant. I can’t imagine starting a garden
without tomatoes, so let’s talk about those. There are
certain advantages to growing your tomatoes from seed,
but, unless you’re experienced and pretty good at that
sort of thing, I would just wait and buy some seedlings from your
favorite garden center. A lot of novice gardeners around these parts
experience failure whenever attempting to plant from seed. Tomatoes
love the sun; the more sun, the better! Of course, when it’s time to put
them in the ground, make sure you mix in some garden soil. They’ll
need a little elbow room, so plant them at least two feet apart. Once
they get growing, which won’t be long, surround each plant with one
of those cages.

Just because they love the sun doesn’t mean they prefer dry soil.
Tomatoes require lots of water, especially during the first few weeks.
You will have to water each day that it doesn’t rain. In fact, lack of
moisture is the most common reason for tomato plant failure. After
they are established, the plants will need to be fed. When you feed
your flowers, don’t forget the veggies! It is common practice to pick
tomatoes when they are fully ripe. But, if you pick them a little earlier,
the vine can then pass nourishment on to the younger tomatoes. The
ones you picked will ripen just fine. If some branches of the plant grow
very near to the ground, cut them off to prevent disease. Periodically
check to see if any tomatoes are being invaded by bugs or worms. You
can usually thwart this problem from spreading by keeping an eye out
and picking the bad tomatoes.
It has been written, “A thing of beauty is a joy forever!” But, enough
about me! Let’s get back to the tomatoes.
Why go to the trouble of planting tomatoes? Store-bought ones are
pretty good! Well, let’s see if I can put this into the proper perspective.
I got it! Think about pizzas! Some of those store-bought ones are
getting to be quite good. And, you start thinking, “Why spend more
when these are close to the real thing?” Then, one day, you order a
pizza from a genuine “pizza place”. There’s no comparison! It’s hard
to explain the taste of fresh picked vegetables, but, once you’ve sliced
into one of your own home-grown, you’ll understand. “This ain’t storebought!”
I decided to concentrate on the tomato because it is probably the
most common home-grown plant. There is a very high probability of
success, but I wanted to point out that, in spite of their reputation for
flourishing beyond your needs, there are still some rules you might
want to follow.

Throughout the 1990’s and into the early 2000’s we have seen the
further evolution of the definition of the “family.” Demographics have
forced a change in the perception of what exactly is an American
family. Single parent households, unmarried couples, individuals living
alone and other alternative lifestyle arrangements are becoming the
norm rather than the exception. Each of these social units presents
unique financial planning problems that do not fit into “cookie cutter”
recommendations.

Single parent families face many of the same financial problems that
are posed for traditional families, yet with an added level of urgency.
Disability planning for such parents is crucial because there is no live-in
back-up to rely on for a source of income in the case of an event where
the single parent is unable to provide. Durable powers of attorney for
property management and health care directives as well as adequate
insurance coverage can be saviors in such events. Trusts with reliable
successor trustees can also be useful tools to address potential
problems. Adequate life insurance should be present to provide for
future educational, child care, home and health care expenses of the
children.

The financial planning challenges that confront the long-term bachelor\
bachelorette are similar to those of the single parent. Disability
planning is a primary consideration. Yet, basic estate planning is
also important. Without a will or other tool to provide direction in the
distribution of a single individual’s estate, the deceased’s property will
pass according to the respective state laws of intestacy. This may be
wholly opposite of the deceased’s wishes.
In the case of unmarried couples, these problems are especially
prevalent. Neither state laws of intestacy nor the Internal Revenue
Code recognize or offer any benefits to “life partners.” For example,
despite the fact that local law may recognize the concept of life partners
(heterosexual or not), the tax code does not provide transfer tax
“marital” deductions based on these relationships. There is no such
thing as leaving all to your pseudo-spouse tax free as with traditional
married couples. Thus, life insurance can play an even greater part to
meet potential estate taxes.

Many of these unusual financial planning problems arise because of
conscious lifestyle decisions. But many arise due to chance or fate.
Yet, the basic financial goals are the same. Each of these groups
must balance their current lifestyle and finances with their future goals
and needs. Each must invest their assets effectively to accomplish
set goals. Each needs to protect against emergencies and hardships.
Finally, each needs to decide what they want to leave behind, to whom
they want to leave it, when to leave it and the most effective means
of doing so. Many traditional techniques need to be modified and
adapted to achieve these goals. Yet, eventually this boils down to
adopting a systematic, detailed and individualized approach. Such
an approach, and working with experienced professionals, is essential
to effective financial planning to provide for whomever you choose to
call a “family.”

PURR-FECTLY HEALTHY TREATS
Want to reward your kitty? Before reaching for the pouch
of cat treats, try offering nonfood treats instead. Cats
enjoy all sorts of rewards, from smelly herbs to soft chin
rubs. For a natural treat, offer your cat the occasional
pinch of dried catnip, valerian root, catmint, cat thyme, or
cat grass. Of course, sometimes, a little extra attention is
treat enough for your kitty. If you opt for food treats, provide lean meats or snacks that are nutritionally complete,
and be sure to cut back on meal size.

Real Age Tip
WHAT YOU SAY IS WHAT YOU GET
Not thrilled with what you see in the mirror? Have a little chat with
your reflection. If you tend to beat yourself up about your perceived
physical flaws, try something called “mirror-exposure therapy.” Here’s
how: Look at your reflection and describe your body in objective, nonjudgmental terms. For example, instead of saying “I have fat thighs,”
say, “My thighs are fuller than my calves.” Changing the words can
gradually change the negative feelings behind them. try speaking to
your reflection without using emotionally charged words. It may not be
easy at first, but with just a little practice, you could be on your way to
a healthier self-image.
“For my birthday, I asked my husband for a Dustbuster,” she replied.
“This is what I got.”

Each year Mike tries to encourage his clients to review their coverage. As we all know, things can change in a short period of time and
it’s always a good idea to check things over. It’s also a good idea to
compare prices and Mike would be more than happy to sit down with
anyone and find out what they need and give them pricing. If you are
hard pressed for time, Mike’s website provides a short, easy, electronic form to fill out that you can send to him. He will then get back to you
and set up a time when he can meet with you and discuss your needs.
That form can be found lonline at http://www.farmbureauinsurance.

BAKED ZITI I
Ingredients:
1 pound dry ziti pasta
1 onion, chopped
1 pound lean ground beef
2 (26 ounce) jars spaghetti sauce
6 ounces provolone cheese, sliced
1 1/2 cups sour cream
6 ounces mozzarella cheese, shredded
2 tablespoons grated Parmesan cheese
Recently, Farm Bureau was able to form a partnership with Blue Cross
Blue Shield of Michigan to provide their health care coverage through
the Farm Bureau offices. There are many plans available and some
are more than affordable. Mike is excited about the special program
specifically designed for the 18 to 30 year old age group. It can be
medically underwritten. However, if your health is not quite what it
should be, you could be denied. There is coverage that is not medically underwritten as well. The price is very cost effective at less than
$50 a month. It will more than pay for itself if that time comes when
you might break a leg and need to go to the hospital. It’s important to
be prepared for all those events in life that we don’t plan on . . . like
breaking a bone, or a sickness that can land you in the hospital for a
day or two.
Directions:
1. Bring a large pot of lightly salted water to a boil. Add ziti pasta, and cook until al dente, about 8 minutes; drain.
2. In a large skillet, brown onion and ground beef over medium
heat. Add spaghetti sauce, and simmer 15 minutes.

the 50s and 60s. Someone who gets to know his clients, cares about
them and wants to take care of their needs. Mike works hard to make
it easy for people to get the attention they need in times of crisis. His
clients have his cell phone number so they can call him if they are in
an accident or there is a house fire. Mike will come out at any hour to
help his clients sort through what they need to do next in regards to
insurance claims and even just holding their hand if they need it.
Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C). Butter a
9x13 inch baking dish. Layer as follows: 1/2 of the ziti,
Provolone cheese, sour cream, 1/2 sauce mixture, remaining
ziti, mozzarella cheese and remaining sauce mixture. Top
with grated Parmesan cheese.
Bake for 30 minutes in the preheated oven, or until cheeses
are melted.

The Hawks Corner
Happy Home
JOIN THE ICEHAWKS PLAYERS
AT A COCKTAIL HOUR
Event Will Take Place On February 23
At The Fogcutter Restaurant
BUYING A FORECLOSED HOME
Don’t be afraid to look at foreclosed homes when you’re considering
an investment, first time buy, or stepping up
to a larger home for the growing family. However, be informed before you start to look.
The Port Huron Icehawks invite fans to join
the players for drinks and hors d’oeuvres at
a special Icehawks cocktail hour on Monday,
February 23 at the Fogcutter Restaurant in Port Huron.
First, let’s look at a staggering statistic. At any
given time this number changes with the addition and subtraction of homes on the market.
However, in a recent study of St Clair County,
248 homes out of 1412 homes currently listed
on the MiRealsource Multilist System are bank
or government owned. (17.5%)
The event will run from 5:30 p.m. – 7:30 p.m. and include an array of
appetizers and a cash bar. Cost for the event is just $15. Icehawks
players will serve and bartend. All tips the players collect will benefit
the Port Huron Hospital Foundation.
Next, you will need to find a real estate agent to look at these homes.
‘Do I need an agent that only handles bank owned?’ The answer to
this question is NO. Please remember, the listing agent represents
the bank in the deal, not you as the buyer. In some cases the bank
will allow the agent to become a Dual Agent – but if you would like
your agent to represent only YOU – then contact an agent to act as
a Buyer’s Agent. If this is confusing, please give me a call and I will
explain agency to you.
A live and silent auction will take place during the night, with the chance
to win some great memorabilia. You will also have the opportunity to
win a “kiss” and photo with your favorite player, or the voice of the
Detroit Red Wings, Karen Newman. A player auction will be held, as
well. Place a bid for the opportunity to have lunch with one of your
favorite players.
The evening will also include the debut of “It’s Our Time Now”, a DVD
that highlights the Icehawks 2008-09 season.
As a final note, please be sure to have a knowledgeable person inspect the house you intend to buy. When buying a foreclosed home,
you are buying it in “as is” condition. Perhaps the home has leaks, or
no insulation, or a faulty hot water heater, just to name a few delightful
surprises that you could find out AFTER closing. Check it out before
you buy! Also – don’t limit yourself to bank owned. There are fantastic
deals through private ownership right now on the market too.
“The Icehawks are happy to partner with the Fogcutter Restaurant to
put on this event,” Icehawks Vice President and Business Manager
Dave Goetze said. “It will be a great evening to mingle with the players
and other Icehawks fans and enjoy some quality food and drink at a
classy restaurant.”
Reserve your spot today at the Icehawks office, 325 Huron Avenue,
Port Huron, or by calling the Icehawks office at 810-966-3800. Please
make checks payable to Kinney Charities.

A lonely old widow was sitting on a park bench. A nice looking older
man sat down next to her.
Our Prayers
“New to the neighborhood?” asked the woman.
PRAYER ON BEING MADE REDUNDANT
“I lived here years ago,” replied the gentleman.
Redundant’ – the word says it all - ‘useless,
unnecessary, without purpose, surplus to
requirements.’
“So, where were you all these years?”
“In prison.”
Thank you, Heavenly Father, that in the
middle of the sadness, the anger, the uncertainty, the pain, I can talk to you.
“Forgive me for being nosey, but what were you in prison for?”
He looked at her and quietly said, “I killed my wife!”
“Oh,” said the woman. “So, then, you’re single!”
Hear me as I cry out in confusion, help me
to think clearly, and calm my soul. As life carries on, may I know your
presence with me each and every day. And as I look to the future, help
me to look for fresh opportunities, for new directions. Guide me by
your Spirit, and show me your path, through Jesus, the way, the truth
and the life.
Amen.

LIFESTYLE FACTORS THAT CAN AFFECT ADHD
Diet and pollutants can worsen symptoms of ADHD
By Amy Paturel, M.S., M.P.H.
2631 Krafft Rd.
Port Huron, MI 48060
An increasing number of children are kicking, screaming, hitting, and
otherwise acting out. Some are so violent that they can’t be in the same
room with other children. The reason: attention deficit hyperactivity
disorder (ADHD), a condition that affects up to 5 percent of children.
While some people think that sugar, TV, and video games are to blame,
experts claim there’s no evidence to support such theories.

“We seem to keep revisiting these urban legends when the research
has overwhelmingly been either inconclusive or contradictory,” says
Floyd Sallee, M.D., Ph.D., professor of psychiatry at the University of
Cincinnati. But there are other environmental factors that do have an
effect:
FOREST CITY
ENTERPRISES
Nicotine - Several studies have shown that children of mothers who
smoked during pregnancy display more signs of attention deficit and
are more likely to exhibit learning problems in school. “The risks
aren’t only posed by mothers smoking but also, more alarmingly, by
exposure to secondhand smoke during pregnancy on into the first year
of life,” says Sallee. Why? Nicotine exposure in the womb and during
early ages is toxic to developing brain tissue and may have sustained
effects on behavior.

Alcohol - While fetal alcohol syndrome is not directly related to ADHD,
its symptoms — inattention and cognitive impairment — are similar to
those of ADHD. Drinking during pregnancy can certainly increase the
risk that the child will develop ADHD or ADHD-like symptoms. In adults
who have ADHD, drinking can exacerbate symptoms, especially as
regards impulsivity.

Heavy Metals - “There’s a known relationship between lead toxicity
and detrimental effects on the functioning of a child’s central nervous
system that look like ADHD,” says Sallee. “We’ve cleaned up the lead
in gasoline, but there’s a lot of lead in the environment — for example,
in paint.” And it’s not just lead. Heavy metals such as cadmium and
mercury (which is harbored in large predatory fish like swordfish and
mackerel) have similar effects. Pregnant and nursing women as well
as children should avoid these fish.
Food - More than 30 years ago, Benjamin Feingold, M.D., suggested
that food additives — colorings, flavorings, and related substances
— have a pharmacological effect and may influence hyperactivity in
children. After reviewing a series of studies, however, the National
Institutes of Health concluded that food additives affect only a small
number of children with behavioral problems. That said, a balanced,
healthy diet does improve focus by stabilizing blood sugar levels, a
key to managing ADHD symptoms.
Secondary Conditions - ADHD does not occur in a vacuum. In fact,
many researchers believe it is a syndrome or cluster of behaviors
rather than a single disorder. In a study of 152 parents with ADHD, 87
percent had at least one psychological disorder, such as depression,
multiple anxiety disorder, or substance abuse. “When the brain is
abnormal on one circuit, there’s a propensity for further abnormality
— sort of a chain reaction of negative events,” says Sallee. “If you’re
depressed, you don’t pay attention and you have difficulties with
performance” — symptoms that are similar to those of ADHD. It’s the
same thing with insomnia. After all, sleep deprivation makes the best
of us cranky, inattentive, and irritable. Even in a person without ADHD,
insomnia and depression can result in behaviors that are not all that
different from those of a child with ADHD — irritability, inability to focus,
inattention, and so on.

CENTER
1st and 3rd Thursdays of the month - Blue Water Carvers
Come and watch the fine art of woodcarving.
The St. Clair Chamber of Commerce has been identified as a business
resource and counseling location for the Southeast Michigan Chapter
of SCORE. SCORE is an acronym for “Service Corps of Retired
Executives” and when created in 1964, was mostly retired business
executives. However, with the burgeoning of technology, the inclusion
of younger members active in business and experienced in current
business practices has been encouraged. The organization is now
known as “Counselors to America’s Small Business,” which better
identifies its scope and purpose. Currently the national organization
has approximately 400 chapters and 11,000 members.

SCORE is a resource partner of the U.S. Small Business Administration
with approximately 400 chapters nationally. Its more than 10,000
volunteer professional members assist new generations of aspiring
business owners in making their dreams come true when starting or
expanding a business.
Saturday, February 28 from 9 am to 3 pm - Indoor Flea Market.
Call 984.5061 for table rental.
The focus of SCORE is business counseling. Confidential counseling
may be for a few sessions or several years based on individual needs
as one ascends through the SCORE process for business success.
Individual counseling can take place at the main SCORE chapter
office, convenient southeast Michigan locations, or at the client’s place
of business.
For any questions on above programs, call Karen at 984.5061
David Gillis, the executive vice president of the Chamber and a
qualified SCORE counselor, has been developing the local business
counseling center for approximately one year. Commenting on the
center Gillis said, “We pursued becoming a business resource center
for SCORE when we recognized that its southeast Michigan operations
didn’t have a solid presence in St. Clair County.”

PORT HURON TOWN HALL SERIES PRESENTS VALERIE
HEMINGWAY
The Port Huron Town Hall Series will present speaker Valerie
Hemingway on Monday, February 9th at 10:30 a.m. in the McMorran
Place Theatre. A chance encounter in Spain in 1959 brought young
Irish reporter Valerie Danby-Smith face to face with Ernest Hemingway.
The interview was awkward and brief, but before it ended something
had clicked into place. For the next two years, she devoted her life to
Hemingway and his wife, Mary, traveling with them through beloved
old haunts in Spain and France and living with them during the
tumultuous final months in Cuba. Hemingway has evoked the magic
and the pathos of Papa Hemingway’s last years in Running with the
Bulls, published by Ballentine Books in 2006. The account of what she
enjoyed, and what she endured, during her astonishing years of living
as a Hemingway, Running with the Bulls fully captures the mystique
of one of our greatest authors. As his secretary in Spain, France, and
Cuba, after the author’s death, Hemingway worked for the Hemingway
Estate in Cuba, Key West, Ketchum, and New York--gathering all of the
authors papers and organizing them for presentation to the Kennedy
Library. She came by the Hemingway name by marrying--and later
divorcing--Gregory, his youngest son. For two decades she worked in
publishing and public relations in New York City, including two years
as a fiction reviewer for Publishers Weekly. Her articles have appeared
in Saturday Review, The New York Times, and Ski Magazine. Tickets
can be purchased through the McMorran Box Office only.
