Wood Stove Burn
Procedures
There are many way to start a wood fire. Each wood stove has its own operating requirements, our
Leyden included. For the Lopi Leyden cast iron wood stove to burn correctly the unit needs to be heated
well for the combustor to operate properly. Here is step by step instructions on how we suggest you
light your fire:
The first step is to crumple 6 to 8 full pieces of newspaper and place them in the center of the firebox.
Next stack 10 to 20 pieces of kindling on top of the newspaper in a criss cross pattern to allow plenty
of air flow.
Making sure the bypass and air control are both open, light the newspaper and partially close the
doors leaving them cracked open about 1/4" inch for the first 2 to 3 minutes of warm up.
Allow the kindling to burn for approximately 5 minutes then with the provided fire poker flatten the
coal bed. Next you will want to load 10 to 15 pieces of medium size wood.
The 10 to 15 pieces of medium size wood will fill the stove approximately 3/4 full. The reason for
using medium size pieces of wood is to acquire a coal bed as soon as possible. Let the stove burn with
the bypass and air control open for about 45 minutes.
After about 45 minutes your stove should have a 3 to 4 inch coal bed and be ready to load.
Now that the unit is heated and has a good coal bed, fill the unit with wood, close the bypass and
adjust the air control to your desired burn rate.
The Lopi Leyden cast iron wood stove has low burn times from 12 to 18 hours. Here are some pictures
that will show you what to expect during a low burn:
These pictures were taken at 4 hours into a low burn.
These pictures were taken at 8 hours into a low burn.
This picture was taken at 13.5 hours into a low burn.
As you can see after 13.5 hours all you have to do is place some kindling in the stove, open the
bypass, open the air control and the fire relights within minutes.
