when they returned to town
because they organized the Kolacky Pageant.
In addition to volunteering
countless hours in Montgomery and for past Kolacky Days
festivals (ticket booths, food
stands… etc.), the Rotters have
also worked the majority of their
lives in town too.
Barb started out in the park
and rec. program teaching kids
to swim at Lake Volney. She
has also worked at Green Giant
(Seneca Foods), Montgom-
ery-Lonsdale Schools and Holomek’s (Bisek Interiors). Today,
she works as a pharmacist tech.
at Herrmann Drug, something she has done for the
past eight years.
Bob put himself
through college with
his earnings at Green
Giant Co. After graduation, the United
States quickly drafted
him into the Vietnam
Conflict, which he
served from 1968 to
1970. His degree in
business and finance
kept him from the front
lines for those years. He
returned to the States and
worked for Grain Belt Brewery
in the Cities for five years and
Control Data for a year. That
was his only time away from
Montgomery.
On January 1, 1977, he returned to Montgomery and
began working at Westerman
Lumber Co., which he did for
30 years. His retirement in 2008
was short-lived, lasting only a
couple of years.
He went to work for the
Montgomery Housing Authority
as the manager of Park Manor
and did so for five years until he
retired at the end of last year.
The couple has been dedicated to the community their
entire lives and raised their four
children here. Kolacky Days are
an important time in their lives,
and as the festival approaches
next weekend, will being the
Grand Marshals change how
they attend the popular Czech
festival?
“We won’t do anything different. We’ll still go to all of the
events,” they said.
From the nominators
“I nominated Bob and Barb
last year. I think there is none
more deserving than Bob. He
has done very much for Montgomery overall, let alone just for
Kolacky Days. He has turned the
raffle into an integral part of the
Kolacky Days fund raising …
Bob and Barb are good supporters of Montgomery and proud of
the town they live in. They are
at almost everything that goes
on. They raised their family here
and two of their four children
live here and raise their families
here.”
“Bob has served on almost every board there is to serve on. He
is a past member of the Montgomery Area Community Club.
Bob has almost single handedly
made the Kolacky Days Raffle
a savior for Kolacky Days. Bob
helps with the Kolacky Days parade both on Saturday to set up
and Sunday during the parade.
He also worked/part owner
of Westerman Lumber Co. for
30-plus years. Barb is a past
Kolacky Days Queen. I cannot
thing of a more deserving couple
to be Grand Marshals than Bob
and Barb Rotter.”

Vitáme Vás from your Mayor
Jean Keogh
Mayor, City of Montgomery
would not be possible
without the strong leadership and support from
the Montgomery Area
Community Club. Special
thanks to the dedicated
board members who,
along with countless
community volunteers and
generous sponsors, make
Kolacky Days the most
spectacular event in the
State.
Thank you also to all
City staff, area law enforcement officials, and ambulance personnel who make
sure that we have a safe
and enjoyable venue.
Vitame Vas! On behalf
of the City of Montgomery, I proudly welcome
you to our
82nd annual
Kolacky Days
celebration.
We invite visitors, families
and friends
to join the
Montgomery
Keogh
community
as we showcase our Czech
heritage and small-town
friendship.
As always, this festival
Kolacky Days offers
something for everyone,
starting with the queen
pageant on Friday evening.
I extend best wishes to the
ten candidates who are
vying for the crown and
the opportunity to serve
as Montgomery's 2016 ambassadors. Special thanks
to the 2015 Queen Megan
Rabenberg and her royal
court for their outstanding
efforts representing Montgomery throughout the
State over the past year.
Saturday features the
classic car show, tour de
bun bike classic, softball
and horseshoe tournaments, old time musician's
jamboree, and lots of
Czech dancing, to name
just a few. Please join us
for the 20th annual homemade Kolacky baking
contest too. Be sure to
Czech out the vast variety
of ethnic food and beverages available during the
entire weekend, and pick
up some tasty Kolacky for
your trip home provided
by Montgomery's famous
Franke's Bakery.
Sunday's events begin
with the 37th annual 5K
bun run. Our Grand Day
Parade begins at noon
which is sure to please.
The Historical Society's
restored 1925 Keck-Connerman steam engine will
again be featured in the
parade. Please join us in
Memorial Park following the parade for more
music, dancing, and the
renowned Kolacky eating
contest.
You will find the complete 2016 Schedule of
Events brochure at many
Montgomery businesses ,
in this special section and
on the Community Club
website, www.montgom-
erymn.org.
Congratulations to Bob
and Barb Rotter, this year's
Grand Marshalls. Bob has
served our community for
many years, running the
Kolacky Days raffle and
assisting with the parade.
Barb is a former Kolacky
Queen. We thank them
for their commitment to
Montgomery.
I hope you thoroughly
enjoy your time in Montgomery, and look forward
to meeting you during the
festival. I encourage you
to come back to visit us
again.
Community support makes
royal year unforgettable
Megan Rabenberg
2015 Kolacky Queen
When asked what my favorite
memory of being queen was, I have
a very difficult time choosing one
moment because they were all truly
amazing. But, one specific memory
does come to mind when I think
about my reign. It wasn’t anything
extraordinary, it was a simple moment that I will remember forever.
After a long weekend of excitement, laughter, and smiles, the brand
new Kolacky Days Royalty had
finally made it to Sunday, which was
our first parade. This was the first
time we would be presenting ourselves to the community we would
represent for the next year. That’s
when the nerves started to set in. I
remember feeling anxious, wondering if I was going to meet the town’s
expectations. All the thoughts about
what could go wrong raced through
my head. But, as the float started to
move, and we saw the welcoming
faces smile back at us, suddenly the
nerves went away. Like always, my
community was there supporting
and welcoming me as the new Kolacky Queen with open arms.
That feeling of being welcomed
by everyone in Montgomery lasted
throughout our entire reign. Being
Kolacky Queen has been an amazing opportunity for me to share my
pride in my Czech heritage and for
Montgomery. It has taught me many
skills that I am now grateful for. I’ve
gained confidence, by putting myself
out of my comfort zone as my royal-
nothing but fun. Without our royalty
coordinator, Angie Budin, we would
have been completely lost throughout the year. She kept us updated on
all events going on by providing us
the information we needed for the
events, and was our go-to person for
anything!
I also would like to send an
important thank you to my royalty
who shared their time, families, and
much more with me this past year.
Ashlyn Barnett, Annica Reddemann,
and Kelsey Davis helped make this
year unforgettable by giving me so
many wonderful memories that I
will cherish. Keri and Kevin Barnett,
Abby and Chris DeGrood, Char and
Bruce Davis, Jim and Karen Reddemann, and my parents, Troy and
Susy Rabenberg, have generously
sacrificed so much of their time and
have been continuously supportive
to all of us throughout this once-ina-lifetime opportunity.
I would like to invite everyone
to the Kolacky Queen Pageant on
Friday, July 22 at 7 p.m. This year
we have ten beautiful and talented
young ladies competing for the
crown. Any of them would make an
exceptional queen.
There isn’t a thank you big enough
to show my appreciation to my community for allowing me to represent
Montgomery. I am more proud of
my community today than I have
ever been because of this experience.
I am proud to say that I live in Montgomery and have truly enjoyed my
reign as the 2015 Kolacky Queen.

ty and I attended numerous parades,
coronations, and community events.
None of these experiences would
be possible without the behind the
scenes work. First, I’d like to thank
the Montgomery Area Community Club, for their dedication and
hard work. They have done all the
funding, volunteering, and supporting for Kolacky Days. They are the
people who make this celebration so
successful. All the members do a fantastic job, but I’d like to thank Tom
Washa in particular. He puts in so
much time and effort into preparing
and promoting Kolacky Days, and
we all are extremely grateful for him.
Next, I’d like to thank the Kolacky
Pageant Committee, who make
sure our pageant is organized and
entertaining. They also make the
candidacy process unforgettable and
What is a Kolacky?
Wade Young
Several cities across the country hold annual Kolacky
Festival celebrations, but only Montgomery claims to
be the “Kolacky Capital of the World” with its 82-yearold festival of a Bohemian bun.
So what is a kolacky?
Simply put: A kolacky is a type of pastry that holds
a dollop of fruit, rimmed by a puffy pillow of supple
dough. Originating as a semisweet wedding dessert
from Central Europe, they have become popular in
parts of the United States.
The assembly of a kolacky varies according to taste.
Some are made with an “open face” with the filling in
the center, while the Montgomery classic is closed with
the pastry’s corners meeting in the center. The sweet
dough can be made with cream cheese, sour cream, ice
cream and yeast.
Kolackies exist in most Eastern European cuisines
and are spelled as “kolaci", “kolache", “kolacky" or
‘kolachky”.
The most common fillings include apricot, apple,
poppyseed, prune, cheese and raspberry, although
pineapple, passion fruit, persimmon and quince are
sneaking their ways into the buns.
At the 82nd annual Kolacky Days, you can treat
yourself to a variety of kolackies. Pick them up at
several locations during the weekend: Memorial Park,
Franke’s Bakery, Edel’s Meat Market and Fred’s Market Place Foods.
Have a Happy & Safe

The Dragon Patrol will be watching over the Grand Day Parade on Sunday.
A parade is never complete until the local and
visiting queens make their
appearance, and the
Grand Day spectacular
will highlight at least 30
royalty units, including
Montgomery’s own past
Kolacky Royalty and the
new royal party which is
selected the Friday night
of the Kolacky weekend.
Officials from
Montgomery and surrounding communities
will also show their civic
pride by riding in the
Kolacky Parade. They will
include Montgomery
Mayor Jean Keogh,
Lonsdale Mayor Tim Rud
and New Prague Mayor
Chuck Nickolay.
Fire departments are
always popular as they
display their shiny units,
with children eagerly
awaiting some candy to
come their way. The
department from Mont
gomery will have their
units proudly on parade,
as well as representatives
from at least five or six
visiting departments from
surrounding communities.
There will also be several political visitors making an appearance, hoping people will remember
them at their next election.
Parade Route
The big parade begins
at 12 noon and follows
the same route as in previous years — starting at
Vine Avenue W. & 3rd
Street, south on 3rd St. to
Oak Avenue SW, east on
Oak to 1st Street (Main
St.), north on 1st to
Boulevard Avenue, west
on Boulevard back to
3rd St.
Many Volunteers
The parade chairman
said he could not coordinate a parade of this size
and quality by himself.
“Just like many other
Kolacky events, I rely on
numerous volunteers to
help make the Kolacky
Days Grand Day Parade
one of the best in the area,
and in Minnesota.”

The Log Cabin in the
Park is an attraction that
many people visit during
the Kolacky weekend, featuring a display that is sure
to bring back memories.
Last year, items from
the past, including an old
cook stove, were of great
interest to people who
were reminded of the way
things were back in early
years.
This year, the display
will feature “Signs of
Montgomery’s Past,”
including a variety of old
signs from buildings,
streets, interior business
walls, etc. There will even
be old rural fire numbers,
used to identify the location of farms in the country.
Duane Jindra coordinates the display in and
around the cabin, changing the theme each year.
He has great interest in
history, and shares his
interest with anyone willing to view his collections.
“More than 95 percent
of the display items are
mine,” he commented. “I
collect what I can, with
people often helping out
with an item or two. I also
go to auctions and might
find all kinds of things
that are useful in a display.”
Duane said he stores

Being a candidate for

To help the candidates

the Kolacky Days Pageant Committee works

they are ready for the big

"We choose activities
that will expose them
to people they may not
associate with like those
at Traditions or seniors
at Meals on Wheels,"
Schoenbauer said. "It
helps with their comfort
levels that they can work
with all age groups."
One event the candi-
dates attend is held at the
beginning of the season.
Interview Night brings
the girls together with
the current royalty. The
girls bond over a potluck
dinner, look at video of
the previous year's pageant and run through tips
to help them prepare for
their big night. Schoenbauer said the girls also
practice their interview
skills, exactly how it will
happen with the judges
before the pageant.
"We give them a full
seven-minute interview,"
Schoenbauer said. "When
they're finished, we
will give them pointers
and things to change so
they're more polished.
This helps them for the
pageant, and for the rest
of their lives."
Of course, some things
are fun too, like attending
the taping of Bandwagon and attending Belle
Plaine's BBQ Days, something the girls did last
week with their parents
and family. Schoenbauer
said while the girls are
having fun, they still need
to remember they are
already in the spotlight
representing Montgomery.
"This helps them get a
feeling of what it will be
like being royalty," she
said.
Candidate Grace Krautkremer said the Pageant
committee has been very
helpful through out her
entire candidacy, including coming to the dance
rehearsals for the pageant's opening number.
"They each have taken
part in coming to our
opening number practices and they would help
us with different things.
These things would be
teaching how to walk
a figure eight, which is
more difficult than you
think, and showing us
how we should introduce
our selves to the judges," Krautkremer said.
"I would also personally
like to thank the committee for giving up their
free time in the summer
to put on this wonderful
celebration and pageant!"

Lessons and skills gained:
I have gained many skills. Putting
myself out of my comfort zone and
trying new things, I have gained confidence.
Advice to KD candidates and royalty:
Be yourself; don't change anything
about yourself to gain approval of others. Take advantage of your strengths,
put yourself out of your comfort zone,
and be proud of what you are doing for
your community.
Future Plans:

people offering love and support, even
when I do not realize it. I have learned
to really, really appreciate them; I don't
know what I would do without my
family and friends.
I have gained more confidence and
better public speaking skills, and I'm
more involved in my community.
Second Princess
Annica Reddemann
Lessons and skills gained:
I am more confident in myself and
in the Montgomery community. I have
grown to accept new challenges and
have experienced different cultures.
Be proud of where you came from and
be true to who you are and what you
believe in.
Miss Congeniality
Kelsey Davis
Lessons and skills gained:
I have learned the importance of community. The Montgomery Community
has provided so many opportunities
to its residents and the Royalty. I have
gained confidence and public speaking
skills.
Advice to KD candidates and royalty:
Really know yourself and be true to
who you are because the judges and
people surrounding you will definitely
sense that. Also, push yourself to your
limits.
Advice to KD candidates and royalty:
Being Royalty and being a candidate
are great honors. You have proven that
you are committed to this community.
Be grateful for the ones who got you
to where you are, and be proud of
yourself. Enjoy every moment of this
experience.
Advice to KD candidates and royalty:
Your hard work has paid off. Represent this community to the best of your
ability. Take as many opportunities as
possible. The year goes by extremely
fast; make the most of an amazing time.

Button designer is repeat winner
Wade Young
Kolacky Queen Megan Rabenberg was the inspiration
for this year's Kolacky Days
button that commemorates
the 82nd annual festival.
Button designer, Sarah
Dolejs, said she had so much
fun designing the 2016 button and used the Queen as a
starting point for the design.
"Our Kolacky Days Queen,
Megan Rabenberg, was
stunning in her red sequined
gown, and offered a great
starting point for my design.
The colors I used on the button were selected to compliment her photo," Dolejs said.
The Montgomery-Lonsdale High School graduate
designed the button that features Rabenberg, along with
a kolacky and a fun font.
"I searched for a font that
was playful, yet still easy to
read. There is an 'old time'

helped me accomplish one
of my design goals - to link
the past to the present." the
designer said.
Kolacky Days is now 82
years old and Dolejs said she
wanted to honor the community's ancestors who began
the wonderful celebration so
many years ago.
The Montgomery Area
Community Club, the organization that coordinates the
festival held a contest last
year for the button design.
The entries were voted on in
November and included all
213 MACC members.
"I enjoyed the opportunity
to enter the design contest
and am so pleased to have
been chosen as the winner,"
she said.
About the artist
Dolejs lives in Apple Val-
ley. She works at the Minnesota Zoo, and is a photographer and graphics designer.
She knows a thing or two
about Montgomery's Czech
Heritage. Her family line
goes back to the very first settlers - Vojtech (Albert) Dolejs,
Anton Rynda and Frank
Mariska, who each claimed
160 acres and started the
Czech settlement they called
"Nemanice" located near
Budejovice two miles west of
Montgomery.
Winning the button contest
again gave her $100 in Monty
Bucks, a Kolacky Days
t-shirt, an oversized souvenir
button, and the opportunity
to see her souvenir button
design everywhere for the
82nd annual festival.
Dolejs also designed the
buttons for the 2012 and 2015
festivals.
