Basic Piercing After Care
A PiERCiNG is A PUNCTURE WOUND, AND HEALS FROM THE OUTSIDE IN. THEREFORE,
YOUR PIERCING MAY LOOK HEALED IN A FEW vVEEKS. BUT IT IS STILL HEALING THE INTERNAL
TISSUE. WHICH USUALLY TAKES SEVERAL MONTHS. IT IS VERY IMPORTANT THAT THROUGHOUT THE
STATED HEALING TIME. YOU DO NOT TOUCH YOUR PIERCING AND DO FOLL9W THESE
SUGGESTED AFTER CARE INSTRUCTIONS.
THE HEALING PERIOD FOR A
PIERCING IS
OR LONGER.
BLEEDiNG IS NORM;A.L. IF YOU DID NOT BLEED AT THE TIME OF PIERCING, IT IS VERY
POSSIBLE THAT YOU MAY HAVE A BIT OF BLEEDING OR DRIED BLOOD AROUND THE PIERCING
THROUGHOUT THE FIRST WEEK. To REMOVE DRIED BLQ,OD. Do NOT PICK OR SCRAPE, BUT SIMPLY
SOAK YOUR PiERCING IN SEA SALT WATER. AS DESCRIBED IN "CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS:'
THOUGH SOME SWELLING AND REDNESS ARE ALSO COMMON. SLEEPING WITH YOUR HEAD
ELEVATED VviLL HELP KEEP IT AT A MINIMUM FOR PIERCINGS ABOVE THE NECK. IBUPROFEN, TAKEN
AS INSTRUCTED ON THE LABEL, WILL ALSO HELP KEEP SWELLING AT A MINIMUM FOR ALL
PIERCINGS. Do NOT 'TOUCH. TURN. PICK AT, OR TAP ON YOUR JEWELRY WITH YOUR FINGERNAILS:
LEAVE YOUR PIERCING ALONE. EXCEPT ·WHEN CLEANING.
AVOID SWIMMING OR SUBMERGING IN WATER, INCLUDING BATHTUBS, HOT TUBS AND
SWIMMING POOLS.
OUR NATURAL BODIES OF WATER RETAIN BACTERIA (AND ARE OFTEN
POLLUTED), AND MAY SUBJECT YOUR PIERCING TO INFECTIOUS BODILY FLUIDS FROM OTHER
SWIMMERS. IF YOU ABSOLUTELY MUST GO INTO THE WATER, TO AVOID INFECTION YOU CAN TRY
USING A WATERPROOF.BANDAGE SUCH A$ TAGADERM. AVAILABLE AT YOUR LOCAL PHARMACY. BE
SURE TO APPLY THE BANDAGE SO THAT THE ADHESIVE IS AT LEAST ONE~HALF INCH AWAY FROM
THE PIERCING AND JEWELRY.
OTHERWISE, NEVER USE BAND-AIDS OVER NEW PIERCINGS,
WHEREAS THEY CAN SMOTHER THE AREA AND THE ADHESIVE CAN TRAP DiRT AND B.~CTERtA. TO
CAUSE AN IRRITATION.
NEVER USE ALCOHOL. PEROXIDE, OR ANYTHING THAT CONTAINS THEM, IODINE.
BACTINE. HIBICLENSE, BEDIDINE, NEOSPORJN, A&.D. OR PERFUMED SOAPS AND BODY WASHES TO
CLEAN OR LUBRICATE YOUR NEW PIERCING.. THESE PRODUCTS ARE NOT SUITABLE FOR PUNCTURE
WOUNDS. AS MOST STATE ON THEIR LABELS.
NEVER USE SCENTED LOTIONS, OEODOR.A.NT SOAPS OR HFAVILY SCE!"-JTEDSHll.MPOOS
OR CONDITIONERS, MAKE~UP, COLOGNE, HAIRSPRAY, GEL. MOUSSE. OR HAIR-DYE ON OR AROUND
YOUR PIERCING. AVOID CONTACT WITH OTHERS BODILY FLUIDS. YOUR BODILY FLUIDS ARE NOT
HARMFUL TO YOURPJERCING. THEREFORE EXERCISE IS OK DURING HEALING. AS LONG AS YOU
FOLLOW THE CLEANINGINSTRU-CTJONS AS DIRECTED. WASH YOUR 'BEDDING ANDPfLLOWCASES
IN HOT WATER, AND CHANGE FREQUENTLY. Do NOT ALLOW PETS TO COME INTO CONTACT WITH
YOUR PIERCING, OR SLEEP IN YOUR BED, or-·J YOUR CLEAi"J, FREQUEj"-.ITLY CH.Ai·~GED SHEETS. FOR
NEW EAR PIERCINGS, AVOID TALKING ON PUBLIC TELEPHONES AND CLEAN YOUR HOME PHONE
REGULARLY.
THOUGH THEY ARE INFREQUENT. YOU WILL KNOW ANY INFECTION IF THE PIERCING OR
AREA IMMEDIATELY AROUND THE PIERCING IS RED, HOT OR EMANATING HEAT, SWOLLEN, EXCRETES
PUSS, OR BECOMES TENDER TO THE TOUCH. Do NOT REMOVE THE JEWELRY. IF YOU DO, THE TOP
LAYER OF SKIN 'vVILL HEAL FIRST. TRAPPiNG THE if",FECTiON iNSiDE. AND MAY RESULT IN EXCESSIVE
SCARRING OR PERMANENT DISCOLORATION OF THE AREA. SHOULD YOU GET AN INFECTION.
IMMEDIATELY RETURN TO CLEANING YOUR PIERCING TWICE DAILY WITH THE WARM SEA SALT
SOAKS., AS DESCRIBED IN "CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS," IF THE lRRITi~~TION PERSISTS. ,SEE. YOUR
PIERCER FOR ADVICE OR CONTACT A DOCTOR FOR ANTIBIOTICS.

MORE STRESS ON THE PIERCING). AFTER THE FIRST WEEK TO TWO WEEKS. YOUR PIERCING MAY
BEGIN TO MOVE MORE FREELV: ONCE IT DOES BEGIN MOVI'NG YOUR JEWELRY BACK AND FORTH

is COMPLETELY HEALED. CONTINUE TO CLEAN IT DAILY.
FOR ORALPIERCINGS (TONUGE. LIP, CHEEK, MONROE, ETC.), FOLLOW THE CLEANING

MORE THAN 4-5 TIMES DAILY. OF COURSE, YOU WiLL NOT WANT TO WASH A ~-ONGUE PJERCING
WITH THE ANTI-MICROBIAL SOAP. BUT SIMPLY FOLLOW THE MOUTH WASHING INSTRUCTIONS, SEA

DURATfON OF INlTfAL HEALING TIME. ONCE YOUR TONGUE PIERCING HAS HEALEr:>. IT IS ADVISABLE
TO SHORTEN THE POST TO A MORE SNUG FIT AND CHANGE THE SURGICAL STEEL BALLS TO A

CLEANING SOLUTIONS
WHAT 10 DO
Use one or both of the following solutions for healing piercings:
'Packaged sterile saline solution with no additives (read the label), or
a non-iodized sea salt mixture: Dissolve 1/4 teaspoon of non-iodized
(iodine-free) sea salt into one cup (8 oz) of warm distilled or bottled
water. A stronger mixture is not better; a saline solution that is too
strong can irritate the your piercing.
;, A nlild, fragrance-free liquid soap-preferably anti-microbial or germicidal.

CLEANING INSTRUCTIONS, -FOR
BODY PIERCINGS
" WASH your hands thoroughly prior to cleaning or touching your piercing
for any reason,
" SALINE soak for five to ten minutes once or more per day. Invert
a cup of wartll saline solution over the area to form a vacuum.
For certain piercings it may be easier to apply using clean gauze or
paper towels saturated with saline solution. A brief rinse afterward will
remove any residue.
SOAP no more than once or twice a day. While showering, lather up a
pearl size drop of the soap to clean the jewelry and the piercing. Leave
the cleanser on the piercing no more than thirty seconds, then rinse
thoroughly to remove all traces of the soap from the piercing. It is not
necessary to rotate the jewelry through the piercing.
DRY oy gently patting with clean, disposable paper products. Cloth
towels can harbor bacteria and snag on jewelry, causing injury.
WHAT IS NORMAL?
Initially: some bleeding, localized swelling, tenderness, or bruisin~.
During healing: some discoloration, itching, secretion of a whitishyellow fluid (not pus) that will form some crust on the jewelry. The
tissue may tighten around the jewelry as it heals.
'" Once healed: the jewelry may not move freely in the piercing; do not
force it. If you fail to include cleaning your piercing as a part of your daily
hygiene routine, normal but smelly bodily secretions may accumulate.
A piercing may seem healed before the healing process is complete.
This is because they heal from the outside in, and although it feels fine,
the tissue remains fragile on the inside. Be patient, and keep cleaning
throughout the entire healing period.
Even healedpiercings can shrink or close in minutes after having been
there for years! This varies from person to person; if you like your
piercing, keep jewelry in-do not leave it empty.
Wash your hands prior to touching the piercing; leave it alone
except when cleaning. During healing, it is not necessary to
rotate your jewelry.
", Stay healthy; the healthier your lifestyle, the easier it will be for
your piercing to heal. Get enough sleep and eat a nutritious diet.
Exercise during healing is fine; listen to your body.
Make sure your bedding is washed and changed regularly. Wear clean,
comfortable, breathable clothing that protects your piercing while you
are sleeping.
Showers tend to be safer than taking baths, as bathtubs can
harbor bacteria. If you bathe in a tub, clean it well before each
use and rinse off your piercing when you get out.
WHAT TO AVOID
Avoid cleaning with Betadine®, Hibiclens®, alcohol, hydrogen
peroxide, Dia/® or other or other harsh soaps, as these can
damage cells. Also avoid ointments as they prevent neces~ary
air circulation.
Avoid Bactine®, pierced ear care solutions and other products
,containing Benzalkonium Chloride (BZK) and Benzethonium
Chloride (BZT). These can be irritating a~d are not intended for
long term wound care.
Avoid over-cleaning. This can delay your healing and irritate your
piercing.
Avoid undue trauma such as friction from clothing, excessive
motion of the area, playing with the jewelry, and vigorous
cleaning. These activities can cause the formation of unsightly
and uncomfortable scar tissue, migration, prolonged healing, and
other complications.
l
Avoid all oral contact, rough play, and contact with others bodily
fluids on or near your piercing during healing.
,', Avoid stress and recreational drug use, including excessive
caffeine, nicotine, and alcohol.
Avoid submerging the piercing in unhygenic bodies of water such
as lakes, pools, hot tubs, etc. Or, protect your piercing using a
waterproof wound-sealant bandage (such as Tegaderm These
are available at most drugstores.
rM
).
Avoid all beauty and personal care products o~ or around the piercing
including cosmetics, lotions, and sprays, etc.
Don It hang charms or any object from your jewelry until the
piercing is fully healed.
Your
piercing
is expected to take
or longer to heal.

smooth healing e~.perience. Do11't hesitate to contact us by phone or email with any questions!
·Your jewelry is manufactured from the highest quality implant grade materials, and made in the U.S. All of our metal jewelry is either ASTM F-138
rnplant grade Stainless Steel, ASTM F-136 Implant Grade Titanium, or 18k solid gold. All of our jewelry is internally threaded, or threadless. We will
,ever suggest or use externally threadedjeweJry (threads on the post, hole in the ball) in any piercing due to the low quality metals, poor surface finish, an
lrcads that drag bacteria and damage tissue. We never suggest the usc of regular '''carring studs" in a body piercing.
.Keep 1n mind that your body can heal most wounds without much assistance. Many people try to force piercings to heal, usually causing more
omplications than anything. Leave the piercing atone and listen to your body1 Work with it, not against it. If something hurts you, don' do it againl
;EA SALT SOAKS:
Ve at Outer.Limits suggest Sea Salt soaks as care for most piercings. This method helps to draw any bacteria or residue out of the piercing channel so you
ody can form new tissue quickly.
·Mix .exactly 4 teaspoons ofNon-iodized sea salt into 1 gallon of Distilled water, and store in the fridge. Pour the salt water into a disposable.paper cup
~vithout the wa~ coating), ,varm in the microwave for 5-10 seconds until sho\vertemperature. Submerge the piercing in the cup, and let soak for 5·10
linutes. Rinse with plain water and pat dry with a paper towel. This should be done twice a day until the piercing is healed, and always directly after you
nower or \vash your face to remove any products as soon as Possible.
.In some instances, your piercer may suggest a mild soap for the piercing. This should be used for the skin around the piercing, and not inside. We carry a
entle medicated soap called Provon or Satin, both are much safer than any store bought product.
;ome tips for an easy healing experience:
·Stay healthy! Keeping your immune system str9ng is one ofthe. best ways to heal quickly. Poor nutrition and hydration = poor healing. Drink lots of
la.ter~ and gel some sleep!
"
·Vitamins A, C, D, and zinc can speed up the healing process. Stress multivitamins can be beneficial as well.
~Be sure-to -avoid -any·son;o( trauma and irritation. This'can drastically slow healing, and is one of the main"reasons for problems. Anytime the piercing
ets bumped or caught, damage is caused to the tissue, and your body will need time to recover. Be careful not to catch the piercing on shirts, towels,
airbrushes, seatbelts, etc.
-Pressure and friction can also cause severe problems in piercings. Sleeping on a healing piercing can lead to scarring and migration due to the jewelry
ushing against the skin. Avoid sleeping on your piercing at all until it's fully healed•
.Keep everything clean!Sheets~ towels~ and clothing should be washed often to reduce bacteria content
·Kocp your pets away! No matter how cute they arc, their hair and mouths arc dirty.
.Keep all products and chemicals out ofthe piercing.. This includes, but not limited to: Hair products, soaps,. cleansers, lotions, and especially makeup.
Lvoid any gardening until fully healed.
·Most of these products are not tested for contact with open wounds and can be severely irritating to the healing skin.
·Threaded jewelry should be checked occasionally for tightness at least every week. Wash your hands, gently grasp both ends ofthe jewelry with a clean
aper towel, and turn both ends clockwise to ensure tightness ofthe jewelry.
~
)0 NOT touch your piercing with dirty hands!' Preferably don't touch it at all. You can easily introduce bacteria into your new wound, leading
roblems including infection. Do NOT ~ rotate, or spin the jewelry during the healing period. This will disrupt the healing of new tissue and irritate th~
ierciQ.g.
,
his applies to other people touching it, and keep any bodily fluids away from the piercing until it's healed.
