2 - About Wing Tsun Kung Fu
What is Wing Tsun?
Wing Tsun is a complete self-defense system, not a sport-oriented martial
art, offering solutions for real-world encounters, enabling you to deal with an
attacker who does not follow any rules.
The best defense is the one that copes with the most attacks using the
fewest number of techniques or movements. Self-Defense is not a sport. It
must be realistic enough to protect your life! Learning Wing Tsun Kung Fu is
about gaining self-confidence, dealing with unpleasant situations, facing
reality - Self-Defense abilities for the real world.
Just imagine being your attacker's worst nightmare. Once it is obvious that
escape is not an option, instead of retreating or surrendering you will "stick"
to him without hesitation.

7
How does it work?
Wing Tsun Kung Fu students learn to defend themselves by using simple
techniques without acrobatic exercises or tremendous strength. They get to
know the problems of real-life situations and develop over time reliable selfconfidence and learn how to deal with extreme stress in high pressure
scenarios.
How come I’ve never heard of Wing Tsun before?
It is actually very likely that you are familiar with the term. Have you heard
of Bruce Lee before? Bruce Lee trained directly under his Sifu Yip Man and
then moved from Hong Kong to the USA where he later formed his own style
Jeet Kune Do. JKD is based on the foundations and basic principles of Wing
Tsun, however there are some differences.
How would you characterize the ideal self-defense system?
- reacts to all attacks in a similar way, first movement protects best
- doesn't have to distinguish between too
many characteristics
- is in close range not relying on visual
information
- uses the attack to create the defense
- offers aggressive defense, not waiting
passively
- employs continuous protection
- uses attack and defense in one
movement
- has multiple safety measures at once
- is quick to learn, usable
- is legal and functional

3-
Wing Tsun, Wing Chun and Ving Tsun
Why are there so many different spellings?
Wing Chun, Wing Tsun, Ving Tsun all embody the same family of martial
artists. Most Wing Chun practitioners trace their lineage to Yip Man. The
differences in spelling result from students who have progressed enough in
the basic style to make it their own. In Europe, particularly in Germany,
different Wing Tsun organizations boast thousands of
schools with tens of thousands of members.
The spelling Wing Tsun Kung Fu points to Sifu
Ralph Haenel’s teachers Sigung Leung Ting and Sifu
Keith R. Kernspecht, who was nicknamed the “Kaiser
of Kung Fu” by Blackbelt magazine.
Are there real differences between
Wing
Tsun, Wing Chun and Ving Tsun?
The Wing Tsun organization, in which Sifu Ralph
Haenel received his education, boasts tens of
thousands of students in thousands of Wing Tsun
Kung Fu schools in over 60 countries. The continuous
feedback of thousands of professional instructors,
teaching and practicing Wing Tsun day in and day
out, has created a highly specialized curriculum.
Powerful Kung Fu skills, a broad theoretical
knowledge and sophisticated teaching skills are the
trademark of a professional full-time Wing Tsun
Kung Fu instructor. The Wing Tsun training in the
worldwide largest professional martial arts
organization is unmatched.
9
In some
Wing Chun, Ving Tsun schools, students learn the BiuTze form and Wooden Dummy form in their first year. Isn’t this
faster than at your school?
How would the effort of a grade 1 student in Elementary School turn out
performing operations with geometric and Cartesian vectors or determining
intersections of lines and planes in three-space? How about proving
properties of plane figures by deductive, algebraic and vector methods? This
is of course material of Grades 11 and 12 in preparation for University.
In any kind of education in our lives, everything has its place and time.
When you learn the Biu-Tze form in the Wing Tsun Kung Fu system you will
achieve superior striking power, advanced fighting skills and a highly flexible
stance, true measurable skills. The “knowing” of a form does not equal
real Kung Fu skills.
4 - Who is the Instructor?
German born self-defense expert Ralph Haenel has
been studying martial arts since 1977. He is the
author of the book "The Reality of Self-Defense!
What martial arts schools won't tell you."
Reviews at www.selfdefensebookreviews.com.
Learning and teaching Wing Tsun Kung Fu since 1984
he leads a team of devoted instructors, committed to
deliver enjoyable and helpful self-defense instruction
to students of all ages, if novice or experienced students and instructors
from various martial arts. It has become his passion to motivate and inspire
women and men of all ages, teaching detectives, police, members of special
forces and high ranking black belt holders of various martial arts.
10
Over the years he has developed a unique teaching and leaning method, the
ten WingTsun-CoreConcepts™. Like a blueprint, it enables a practical and
enjoyable learning experience.

Other resources are the blog and the online photo album. All web links have
been listed in section 9 on page 20 of the brochure you are reading.
5 - Who can learn Wing Tsun?
Do I need previous martial arts experience?
No special knowledge of any kind is required. Our students come from all
walks of life, some are “new” to any kind of physical workout, let alone
martial arts training, some are experienced black-belt holders of various
other styles, who enjoy the logic and direct approach of this realistic SelfDefense system.
Wing Tsun Kung Fu is enjoyable for
women and men of any age or fitness
level.
If absolute novice or 5th degree black
belt, all come to join our classes in
pursuit of learning a realistic self-defense
system, fit to protect you in the real world.
Do I need to be fit?
It is important not to confuse the fitness developed through weight
training with the type of fitness, the dynamic and flexible spring-like power
developed through Wing Tsun. The first Kung Fu form, Siu-Nim-Tau,
provides internal training which also develops coordination, isometric
11
training, prepares you for the fighting aspects and the fitness required for
your Wing Tsun training. Therefore you develop
both your fitness and techniques at the same time.
Is there an age requirement?
Any age is best; provided you have the maturity
and are ready to set aside the time needed to
train and are dedicated to self improvement.
The general minimum age requirement at our
school is 18, however exceptions can be made.
If the student is under 18 years of age Parental/
Guardian consent is required.
6 - What to expect at trial classes
What can I expect to see and do at the trial classes?
We will introduce the Wing Tsun Kung Fu system. You will see
demonstrations of the student programs, blindfolded Chi-Sao (clinging arms,
or "sticky hands"), the Inch-Punch made famous by Bruce Lee and more.
Among exercises to demonstrate the difference between a realistic selfdefense system and a sport-oriented martial art you will familiarize yourself
with such topics as:
- History of Wing Tsun, Wing Chun, Ving Tsun
- Generalized methods of defense:
1. pure defense
2. defense and counter-attack
3. attack
4. aggressive defense (Wing Tsun Kung Fu)
12
-
Five possible phases in a realistic situation (fight)
Process of making decisions
Exercises: Form, Chi-Sau, Lat-Sau
The simplicity of 2 “active” movements, 4 “passive” reactions,
1 “emergency” reaction
- The importance of 4 fighting principles
- The interpretation of 4 strength principles
- The meaning of 4 dimensions in Wing Tsun
- The 10 WingTsun-CoreConcepts™
- Many helpful Self-Defense exercises
Shouldn’t I watch a class first before trying it?
The free trial training period will consist of blocks of theory explanations,
demonstrations and practical exercises for all. Decades of experience have
shown that not even the best explanation or practical demonstration can
give you a better idea of what Wing Tsun Kung Fu is than hands-on training.
Wing Tsun is taught without military drills in a friendly and relaxed
atmosphere. There is no shouting or yelling of commands, but rather
individualized instruction to lead every participant through a satisfying
workout.
Also, the all-over approach and many
training methods in Wing Tsun
(a realistic self-defense system) are
not comparable to sport-oriented
martial arts.
13
7 - Membership
What should I expect as a regular student?
The classes are fun and challenging! Instructors impart information in a
friendly environment where the students engage in a wide variety of drills,
exercises, and strength training routines. All aspects of training are covered
in this comprehensive program. Wing Tsun Kung Fu is easy to learn and
works regardless of size, strength, or gender.
In class, students engage in
Form training
- which teaches concentration, mental focus, and
precision of body movement.
Strength training
- to build and improve your athletic abilities.
Reflex training
- used to improve hand-eye coordination and timing.
Chi-Sau
- a training exercise unique to Wing Tsun which uses
tactile reflex development and muscle memory to "program" the limbs to
react to contact with an opponent's attack.
Lat-Sau
- free-fighting training, where the student learns to
use the movements of the forms and Chi-Sau for actual fighting.
Footwork, kicking drills - which provide for mobility and agility in
attacking and defending.
How large are the classes?
Usually between 20 to 30 students
attend our group classes, lead by
Sifu Ralph Haenel supported by a
friendly and knowledgeable trainer
team.

the Wing Tsun Vancouver Trainer
Team
14
What is the class schedule?
Group classes are being held Mondays and Wednesdays 7.30-10pm, except
statutory holidays! One can train the whole evening or choose between the
first session starting at 7.30pm or the second beginning at 8.45pm.
Do I have to attend every class?
Due to individualized instruction your continuous progress is guaranteed,
regardless of the number of classes you attend.
What if I need to take a hiatus for vacation or work?
In this situation, it would probably be best to test out the Wing Tsun training
during a convenient month and if you like it, to pay by the year. That way
you won't have to go through the hassle of resubmitting your membership
repeatedly. Chances are, over the course of a year anyone would have
periods during which they were too busy to participate and get full value
from the membership. The sizable pre-pay discount will compensate.
Remember too that while not participating actively, you continue to get
benefits like the print-newsletter, informative news e-mails, special
discounts for Wing Tsun publications, and new video clips at our online
‘members only’ area, which you can view at your convenience.
How much are the fees?
The school contract runs for 6 months and provides flexible payment options
(personal cheque, cash, all credit cards via secure PayPal, online INTERAC).
When signing up a one-time enrolment fee of $60 plus the 1st membership
payment is due. Follow the PayPal link on our open house web site at
www.WingTsunKungFu.com and find out how to save up to $180.00 on your
membership! To ensure your secured purchase, Wing Tsun Kung Fu
Vancouver proudly uses the PayPal®
secured payment network.
15
Advance payment options for your membership, valid until December 2012
(any or all regular group classes included):
monthly
$ 95 no savings
+$60 = $155
3 months $270 save $ 15.00 +$60 = $330
6 months $510 save $ 60.00 +$60 = $570
Please note, our very competitive fee structure is based on most students
only being able to come one evening a week. Should you be able to come
both evenings you get even more for your money. On top, we offer several
prepayment options to save you up to $180.00 of your membership fees.
Let's review:
1. Low monthly membership fees for one full evening per week!
2. Come both evenings and train at NO extra fee!
3. Take advantage of prepayment options to save even more!
I have been already to an Open House/Free Trial Class and would
like to attend a few group classes. What is the drop-in fee?
In addition to the one time enrolment fee of $60, you pay $25 per evening.
Do I have to buy a uniform?
Once you are a student at Wing Tsun Kung Fu Vancouver you have the
choice to acquire our Wing Tsun Kung Fu T-shirts, Sweatshirts, etc.
At any time feel free to browse our new Wing Tsun Kung Fu online store at
www.WingTsunKungFuShop.com (www.cafepress.com/wingtsunkungfu).
Find more than 30 products in five categories to choose from, plus a section
of official students T-shirts and Sweatshirts.
Do I have to pay additional fees to an organization?
No, the Wing Tsun Schools of Sifu Ralph Haenel are independent schools
and are not associated with any organization.
16
Do you have a grading system?
Yes, we feature an easy to understand and practical system of 12 student
grades, followed by the instructor levels.
What is WingTsun-CoreConcepts™?
As a result of Ralph Haenel’s teaching experience it introduces the
framework of ten interconnected core concepts as learning and teaching tool
for a highly interpretive art, a exceptional martial art like Wing Tsun. The set
of easy to understand concepts can bring clarity and transparency to any
exercise or form of this highly specialized self-defense, which in its nature
shows us a systematic approach to all aspects of our training.
Like a blueprint you can use every concept as a point of reference and check
any exercise, movement, or technique to explain the ideas behind the four
weaponless forms.
Do you have a set curriculum?
Sifu Ralph Haenel received his instructor education at the historical
Langenzell Castle, worldwide known as the Wing Tsun Castle. His instructors
included Grandmasters like Leung Ting, Keith R. Kernspecht (the ‘Kaiser of
Kung Fu’), Emin Boztepe (the ‘Natural Warrior’), Rene Latosa (Escrima) and
many others.
The curriculum at Wing
Tsun Kung Fu Vancouver
is partially based on the
education Ralph Haenel
received in the world’s
largest professional
martial arts organization.
17
How long before I will be able to defend myself?
While on one side the mastering of the art of Wing Tsun turns for some into
a life-long exciting learning process, you can expect after six months a
dramatic increase of awareness and self-defense abilities. As individual as
every student is in motivation, goal setting and responsible training, as
much the result can vary.
Do you offer private lessons?
Private Lessons are available on request. Please ask during your trial class
for your info sheet, explaining the choices of one-on-one or semi-private
lessons. Many students choose a training program that includes group
classes, private lessons and home study.
How do you keep students informed?
Our main web site at www.wingtsunkungfu.com (blog, photo album, all web
links on page 20 of this brochure) with over 100 pages of information on
various topics, training program information, instructor bio’s, a password
protected “members only” area and many other features is only one of the
tools, such as regular news e-mails, monthly colour print-newsletters and
informative seminars as the highlight in every students career.
Do you have other school locations?
Founded in 1994 Wing Tsun Kung Fu Vancouver is
not just the first Canadian Wing Tsun branch but
also the only Wing Tsun Kung Fu School in British
Columbia. Many of the students come to our classes
from all parts of Greater Vancouver, even from
Vancouver Island and from Washington. Over the
years many Wing Tsun, Wing Chun instructors and
students have visited our school and trained with us
while being on vacation in Vancouver.

10 - Corporate Seminars, Lunch & Learn
The introduction of the four Wing Tsun Kung Fu fighting principles
accompanied by practical exercises are always well received and readily
trained by everyone. The lunch & learn seminars also cover the application
of the four fighting principles in a work environment. After all, stress in the
work place, dealing with office politics is no different than the stress we face
in a physical scenario.
The ability to position yourself well, instant mobility, flexible responses and
reliable self-confidence, might read like part of the wish list when you apply
for your next job. Self-defense does not start when punches are flying. Learn
to be confident and aware of your surroundings to avoid problems before
they even happen.
Contact me at [email protected] to arrange a lunch & learn seminar
for your company. Discover the extended application of ancient Kung Fu
techniques in a corporate environment. Enjoy an exciting and fun workout
resulting in a positive motivation for your team.

11 - Guest Seminars at other Martial Arts Schools

power principles as well as the ten WingTsun-CoreConcepts™ can be easily
applied to other martial arts. All the instructions are custom tailored to your
specific audience. Using examples from a wide variety of possible scenarios,
he teaches, explains and illustrates each principle.
The benefits: Enabling the average person to achieve in the shortest time
possible maximum results in the ability to defend oneself realistically while
building powerful self-confidence.
