Saudi National Day
Written by Momina Naveed (Gr. 7) and Muhammad Hamza Riaz (Gr. 10)
Saudi National Day is celebrated on September 23rd. Youngsters all over the kingdom
ride their heavy bikes, wearing white and green clothes with their national flags held
firmly in their hands. Like every year, Jubail International School also celebrated this day
in our school with great pomp and show. The boys section and girls section had different
programs for the day.
In the girls section, the extremely talented student
community tried their best to make this day a
special one for all of us. Mrs. Shereen, our incredibly creative art teacher, prepared beautiful art
pieces depicting the magnificent landmarks of
Saudi Arabia to decorate our school’s reception
area. Every nook and corner of our school looked
special. Huge models of Kaaba added a religious
touch to the school”s atmosphere.
All the students tried their best to persuade their parents to buy them green dresses and
matching accessories. It was really fun to watch the lower graders wearing “Thobes”
and “Jalabias” with the national flag painted on their innocent faces. The celebration
started with students of Grade 5 singing the National Anthem of Saudi Arabia. Though
most of the students could not understand, the melodious voices of the little angels mesmerized them. This was followed by a presentation on Saudi’s history and traditions by
Maya Hecham Hamed of Grade 10. Finally, the girls of Grade 10 performed a special
Saudi Dance in which they dressed up as the women and men of Saudi Arabia. It was
simply fantastic! Most of the performers were not Saudi, but their devotion and hard
work made the performance worth-watching, making the audience ask for an encore
performance!
Perfomances by Grade 10 of both girls and boys section ….

VOL. 3 ISSUE 1
The students were not the only ones who
enjoyed the celebration, all teachers were
equally enthralled and took part in all the
activities. It was indeed a memorable day!
While in the boys section, a fabulous program was conducted on September 19,
2013 by Grade 10-O in regard of the Saudi
National Day and in honor of the present
king; King Abdullah bin Abdul Aziz. The program was conducted in the gym of the
school and had a duration of about an
hour; starting at 8:00 a.m. and ending at
9:00 a.m. Everyone from the designated
grade had their assigned tasks to perform,
which they accomplished magnificently
that resulted into a wonderful show that
was liked by all. The guest of honor was Mr.
Ozair and this show was a result of the hard
work and the efforts of two very competitive teachers; Mrs. Arshi and Mrs. Shazia.
The MC of the show was Olayan Javed,
who performed his task beautifully by the
annotation, the pauses, the script and an
accent that was comprehendible to the
audience. Eyas Al-dakheel, Miguel Agustin
and Homam Saleh were assigned the task
of photographing the show. The show
started with the recitation of the Holy
Quran. This honor was given to Anshorullah
Shahrulzaman. Following the recitation, the
daily rituals were followed; exercises conducted by Mr. Said and facts and news

presented by Muhammad Hamza and Ibtihaj Rafique.
Then the show actually started by a concise introduction by the host, telling the audience about the purpose of the day and
its significance. Afterwards, the national
anthem of Saudi Arabia was presented by
all the students of Grade 10 who stood in
reverence. Subsequently, an awe-inspiring
presentation was given by Muhammad
Hamza and Abdul Moiz, informing the students about the significance of the day, as
well as Saudi Arabia’s history, economy,
reserves, geography, dress and culture. It
was highly praised by the audience. Following this presentation was a quiz that
was conducted by Olayan Javed, Ibtihaj
Rafique and Abdalla Hashim, which was
another way of increasing the knowledge
of the audience about their host country
and the winners were presented with
chocolates as a token of appreciation. Finally, six honored students presented a sequence-including a Saudi song and Oppa
Saudi style- that actually added to the success of the program. Ahmed Khan, Khaled
Eid, Omar Mustafa, Abdul Hadi, Mohammed Essam and Muhammad Hamza, performed it remarkably. This sensational performance was received with loud applause by the viewers. A round of applause so loud that it could be heard outside the school ended the show.

Donut day
Written by: Zoya Saraf (12-H)
Who doesn’t like Donuts? Well, everybody does and that’s
why we started the new school year with Donut Day on
26th September, Thursday. Flyers were pinned up, the
event was announced, and lastly yummy donuts were devoured with smiles. It was enjoyed by all, from primary
school to high school students as well as by teachers.
Two varieties were offered at reasonable prices and they
were quickly sold out.
The arrangement for the event was done well in advance
and was organized flawlessly. There was neither confusion nor disorder. Hygienic measures were also taken.
The donuts were sold in the canteen by none other than
the members of the Student Council who worked together
in collaboration. At the end of the day it was a success
seeing everyone pleased. And “donut” worry, there will be
plenty more of activities planned out for all!
Pizza Day
Written by: Fawzi Asraf (12-0)
The long awaited pizza day event was held on the 7th of October. As the announcement reached
the ears of all the little ones, classrooms were flooded with thrilled screams and joyous yays.
As the day drew nearer, the student body practically buzzed with excitement. Everyone was eager to have a small break from the strenuous school days to enjoy their slices of
heaven.
Gooey delicious pizza slices were passed out to all the
students that asked for them. The day was a smashing
success for an event aiming to entertain the student
body. This is why the school holds pizza days as sacred traditions.
As the day came to an end, a quick cleaning and a
small sigh of relief escapes from those in charge. A
contemplation of the day just brings a smile to my face.
A success is a success and as I always say "on to the
next!"

World Heart Day
Written by: Yumna Siraj (7-H)
The student council members had organized a new event, The
World Heart Day, an informative and distinctive day held on September 30, 2013, which was greatly enjoyed by the student body.
Although this was the first time such an event had been held, it was
a great success. The gymnasium decorated in red, posters in the
hallways and students wearing red shirts helped get all of us in the
mood for celebration!
This is a topic that shone light on subjects that aren’t normally taken
into much consideration, like eating habits. They educated the students on how to prevent heart diseases and motivated them to do
exercise and eat more nutritious food. The world heart day celebration went by methodically. Reem Nasir and Hanna Shehata of
Grade 11 and Catherine Sampaga and Yusra Aksakal of Grade 12
held presentations and explained the topic in detail. Soon after that,
they held a quiz. All classes got chances to answer questions and
seeing the thrill on their children’s faces, while answering, was really satisfying. Students, who answered questions correctly, got a gift
each for their participation. The council also appreciated the attempts of those who got the answers wrong.
Towards the end of the program there was also a fascinating bake
sale, loved and enjoyed by all hungry students. The entire crowd
was divided into two and both groups were directed to the two stalls
set up in the gym. Teachers and students gathered around the
stalls, where mouthwatering frosted cakes and array of delectable
cookies and tempting muffins were sold. Kids piled their plates with
different delicacies and went off to share with friends. The day was
filled with boisterous laughter and happy smiles. Undeniably, teachers and students had relished their confectionaries, and learned
more about World Heart Day. With days of toiling and struggle, the
Student Council has absolutely succeeded in creating a stupendous
and momentous day for all of JIS.

Written by: Baylasan Nasim (9-H) and Reem Nasir (11-H)
Just when you think this semester can’t get any more fascinating, Movie Day comes along the way and
proves you wrong. Among all the previous events we had so far, 9th of October has been an additional
ingredient of fun and enjoyment. We students had mentally prepared ourselves to watch the movie and
it’s safe to say we were not the tiniest bit disappointed. The enjoyment of watching the movie was doubled as we were given pepsi and popcorn. When the lights switched off, we felt as if we were in a movie
theater rather than in school.
Out of some options and suggestions of movies, Grades 9 and 10 opted for The Lone Ranger and it was a
great choice. It was the type of movie that will make you impatient to find out what is going to happen
next. There’s nothing better than an action movie with a sprinkle of humor, adding delight to it. Not to
mention, the great Johnny Depp’s presence was the most splendid aspect of the entire movie! He’s the
type of actor who is a pleasure to watch and increases the excitement of the audience. The movie was
thrilling and simply terrific. It began with a little fellow wandering through a carnival or an exhibit
about the Wild West. When he walks past a ‘wax figure’ of an elderly Indian Warrior, he was stunned
when the old man (Tonto) starts to actually speak. Tonto proceeds to tell him about the memorable adventures he shared with The Lone Ranger in the past and how he started wearing a mask to bury his
identity, and that’s how the story began. That was a brilliant opening. For two hours and a half, we were
all taken to mesmerizing dimensions…our bodies in the school but our minds elsewhere.
No matter how much that movie made your palms sweat due to the curiosity about what was to happen
next, the humorous scenes would’ve definitely helped calm you down. It was wonderful hearing plenty of
laughs radiating throughout the room. It had an outstanding ending where John and Tonto decide to
never give up or surrender.
It was a great day for Grades 11 and 12 as they also had a Movie Day in which they enjoyed the sequel
of the KCA winning movie Despicable Me entitled Despicable Me 2, which follows the tale of the three
sisters Margo, Agnus & Edith taking a look at their lives subsequent to being adopted by a retired criminal mastermind with a loveable accent - Gru the ex-supervillain. The welcome aroma of fresh popcorn in
addition to the company of our fellow classmates and friends provided an ideal setting to watch the
critically acclaimed & much anticipated film.
Although some could argue that it was a fairly childish movie for ages 15-18 to watch, the movie is a
must watch for all and was thoroughly enjoyed as the viewers exploded with fits of laugher at the minions gibberish, awed at the sisters cuteness & sighed audibly at the Gru & Lucy scenes.
The movie featured the familiar voices of well acknowledged actors such as Steve Carell, Kristen Wiig
& Russell Brand who were able to voice the characters with such diverse personas rendering the animations to leave lasting impressions on us viewers by way of humor and their immense wit, which contributed greatly to the movie as a whole.
Despicable me 2 was written by American screenwriters Cinco Paul and Ken Daurio generally known for
writing the screenplays for the animated films Dr. Seuss' Horton Hears a Who! & Dr. Seuss' The Lorax. Their simple brilliance in the persistent humor of the film especially Gru’s lines, made it an ideal
movie to watch at the near end of a studious week and allowed us to take a seat back, forget our school
worries and instead lose ourselves in the marvelous world of banana loving creatures and in the time old
theme of good versus evil.
In all honestly, prior the watching the movie I was opposed to the idea of sitting through it but I’m glad
I did for its title is rather misleading, there was nothing ‘despicable’ about it at all.

A Visit from UKuni
Writing by: Hassan Khan (12-O)
In the month of September, Jubail International School had a visit from ‘UKUni’. Basically, ‘UKuni’ is a local organization
which provides aid to students who wish
to study in the UK. The whole purpose of
the visit was to give an orientation to the
graduating batch (Grade 12) of the school.
The orientation not only contained many
tips on how to apply in the UK for the students to benefit from but also the least academic requirements. They also gave a
rough estimate on what the cost would be if a student desired to study in a particular
university for a particular subject. They familiarized the students with an admission
system called the ‘UCAS’. This system allows a student to apply to five desired universities in UK. In order to apply through UCAS, students must fill out a form with fields
like desired subjects, academic grades, personal statement etc. The university then
chooses the best students amongst the list.
The most exhilarating thing about the visit was that there was a regional officer from
the University of Reading, in UK, present in the hall. The officer discussed about his
university, the subjects they offer and their requirements. He also shared some very
interesting things about the campus life and the wonders of the city of Reading.
UKuni is proud to be the
first education agency
in Saudi Arabia to be licensed by the British
Council.
7
Personally, UK seems very attractive now
and the other students had a similar perspective. They believe that the visit was a
pleasant surprise and the orientation was
very beneficial indeed.

The Math Derby is a competition held in our school that
tests the quick analytical and problem solving skills of
students. It does so through a series of 20 short yet challenging questions within the curricula of their respective
grades.
This competition consists of 2 rounds. The first round is
held in each classroom using a multimedia projector and
a white board.
Students have a short period of time to
use all the mental abilities they’ve acquired to be able to
handle critical thinking questions. Students are required
to just note down the final answer on the sheet provided.
The first round is only a scratch on the surface, after the
students hand in their papers, they are taken and
checked by the mathematics coordinator, Mr. Khalid, who
was also the one who organized this educational event to
find out which students are the best in mathematics and
how they approach such complicated questions to end up
with the correct answer.
When the papers are marked and the results are ready to
be announced, the 2 students that achieved the highest
results from each class are chosen. These 2 qualify to the
final round in which combinations of students from different classes form 2 teams.
Finally the two teams have their final showdown and one
team is triumphant. Prizes are given out to the winning
team members for all the effort that was put into getting
this far.

Whenever it feels like all the countries are
drifting apart or that world peace is coming to
an end, the 24th of October serves as a wakeup call for all the nations of the world to come
together and unite once more. United Nations
day is a reminder for people of different countries, races and cultures to unite and together
radiate love all around the world.
United Nations day, all done by the students
of the 9th grade. Afterwards, a presentation
took place where two students spoke more
about the purpose and intention of that day.
Questions were later asked, and the girls who
answered correctly were applauded and given
chocolates.
Jubail International School made a successful
decision to celebrate this special day among
its students by having the 9th grade students
carry out an unforgettable performance during the morning assembly. It was organized by
Mrs. Atiya Begum and Mrs. Sabina (in the
Boys section) and Mrs. Shazia (in the Girls section). Proof of it being an excellent job is that
the presentation created a memory which
would leave its mark on our minds for days to
come.
In the Girls section, the stage was a grandiose
display of blue and white balloons as well as a
myriad of charts and pictures representing
the importance of the United Nations day.
The decoration gave it an outstanding appearance, adding more to the students’ excitement and enthusiasm. Everyone who worked
on it put in a lot of effort and dedication,
which is why it ended up being a spectacle
worth beholding.
The best way to start off the day was a Surah
recitation, followed by an introduction of the
10
Towards the end, the best part had finally begun– music started playing. Before the lyrics
even began, everyone could tell what the
song was, Heal The World by the Michael
Jackson. It was definitely one of the most
wonderful songs of all time, the type of song
that makes your heart wrench. The choice of

song was definitely spot on and we could practically hear every single person's heart pound with
devotion and affection. All the students of grade 9 gradually appeared on stage, one by one, each
holding a flag of a different country. Waving their flags back and forth, they began to sing.
It wasn't even 10 seconds into the first verse before the rest of the audience began to sing along
passionately. The entire school glowed with love and tenderness. The song did not last for long,
but has definitely lasted in everyone’s minds for the rest of the day, ringing and echoing through
their heads. It was the perfect song considering it truly connects to United Nations day, speaking
all about how the world's citizens should behave and treat each other like siblings. That’s exactly
how people are supposed to be. It was thoroughly planned out, amazingly presented and just
downright inspiring. It really etched the message "love is strong" in all of our hearts. It's true that
it's never too late to learn something new, and that's what happened on that day. We all learnt
the meaning of love.
In the Boys section, the decorations were much the same as it was for the girls' side. The program
kicked off with a presentation about the importance and history of the United Nations. Next up
on the agenda was a simulated UN table conference discussing the problems faced by the world
today as well as some of the possible solutions. Later on some general knowledge questions were
asked to see how well the students knew about the United Nations, the ones with the correct answers were given delicious treats. Finally a song promoting equality was sung to conclude the
performance which was thoroughly enjoyed by all those that attended. The work done by the
teachers and students was very well appreciated. All in all the day was a great success and will
hopefully be continued in our school as a yearly tradition.

When you hear the title of “Now you see me” you instantly think
of the well-known expression that magicians use before they disappear; ‘Now you see me, now you don’t.’ The use of this as the title
of the Film leaves you wandering before you even watch the movie
what it will be about, the title increasing your curiosity, which is
how the writers, Boaz Yakin and Edward Ricourt, wanted you to
feel.
Louis Leterrier the director of this French-American Caper Thriller
film, worked with Jesse Eisenberg, Mark Ruffalo, Woody Harrelson, Mélanie Laurent, Isla Fisher, Dave Franco, Common, Michael
Caine, and Morgan Freeman, all having leading roles in the film. It was released on May 31 st 2013, receiving
mixed views from critics. There was praise from the critics for the film's star-studded cast and engaging storyline. However the film's most common criticism is that various plot points were insufficiently resolved at the
film's conclusion, leaving some questions unanswered or answered unclearly. Rotten Tomatoes rated the film
50%, with the site's consensus saying "Now You See Me's thinly sketched characters and scattered plot rely on
sleight of hand from the director to distract audiences." This is contradicting to Peter Hammond from Movieline who wrote, “Pure summer movie magic—literally…You won’t believe your eyes—and that’s the point."
Despite the mixed reviews the film had a successful box office run, placing second receiving £18,182,624 on its
opening weekend from 2,925 cinemas. By 30th June, it had grossed double its production budget, of
£46,462,650. The film has earned £72,930,246 at the North American domestic box office and £127,736,422
internationally, totalling to a £200,666,669 worldwide.
“Now you see me” has a clever plot with many twists along the way,
as you are left puzzling at the magicians clever magic tricks, you
begin to work alongside with the detectives in the film, trying to figure out what seems to be the impossible. The Film has an excellent
soundtrack, composed by Brian Tyler, which created dramatic atmosphere when needed adding to the overall feel of the movie. The
film lasting for 115 minutes will leave you wanting more of the
same. A film that definitely could not be called boring, as there is
not just one main event but many all bigger than the last, leading up
towards the ending.
The ending of the film still has unanswered questions, and there is
still a sense of mystery as though we have not been told all of the
secrets. Leaving us with an empty feeling and wanting a little more. It has been announced however that there
will be a sequel to “Now you see me” which promises to be just as magical as the first film. A must see movie
of 2013 which is capable of astonishing you with unpredictable twists.

The Hunger Games is the first book in a trilogy, and it was released in 2008. I wish I had known it was a trilogy before I finished the book, because then I would have been prepared for the ending, which was a transition into the next book rather than a
totally satisfying end. The third and final installation of the series came out in August 2010. Suzanne Collins, the author,
worked for Nickelodeon and wrote The Overlander before she wrote The Hunger Games. The Hunger Games won several
awards and was a New York Times bestseller. Once I started reading it, I could not put it down.
The Hunger Games is fiction in the young adult genre, which is not my age group, but I found myself unable to put it down. Its
combination of nerve-racking tension, thrilling action, and engaging love story kept me up until the wee hours. I was surprised
at how completely engrossing the plot was. Like Brave New World, this story is set in a future where the government oppresses
its people, but the book also borrows ideas from the Greek myth of Theseus and the Minotaur.
When the book opens, North America as we know it has been destroyed and is now divided into 12 districts, ruled by an oppressive government located at the Capitol. Katniss Everdeen, a 16-year-old girl from District 12, takes her younger sister’s
place as one of 24 tributes selected every year to participate in the Hunger Games at the Capitol.
The Games pick children from ages 12 to 18 against each other in a fight to the death in a giant elaborate arena. Everything is
televised and highly publicized all over the country. Katniss must not only survive the Games, but deal with a romance between
her and another tribute from District 12, all the while deciding if she is willing to kill strangers her own age as a pawn of an
oppressive government.
The Games provided a backdrop to one of the most enthralling plots I have ever read. Katniss constantly battles thirst, fire, hunger, wild animals, injuries, and other teenagers for survival. She makes and loses friends, and I became so attached to her a nd
her fellow tribute from District 12 that I was dying to find out how the book ended. While the plot is mainly what drives this
book, the creativity of this future world and the concept of the Games also impressed me. In addition, the characters are all very
strong and exhibit character development throughout the book.
While I found this book absolutely enthralling, I was surprised it was aimed at an
audience of young adults. It seems extremely intense for anyone younger than 16 or
17. For example, there is a scene where one young tribute is slowly eaten alive by
wolf-like creatures all night long, and Katniss has to finally throw a weapon at him
to end his misery. I found this a little too disturbing when I considered the age of
the character.
The intensity of the action was something one would find in a more mature book,
but the age of the characters and the simplicity of the prose were aimed at a much
younger audience. In addition, this book was written in present tense, which I found
annoying, but that’s more of a personal preference than a stylistic fault. It was also
edited somewhat poorly, but that rarely distracted from the plot. For example, the
author often spoke in sentence fragments to describe how Katniss felt, which might
have been an attempt to reflect on her thought process, but I found it disorienting to
read a lot of really short sentences all together. It would have been better to vary the
sentence length on occasion, but the story was still coherently.
Overall, The Hunger Games was an excellent, enthralling book that I highly recommend. If it was more clearly marked for older teens, it would have been better, but it
was a fantastic book with a wonderfully creative plot.
