UK Nail Tech 2008

The top UK Nail Techs were crowned in
April, at the annual competition as part of
BeautyUK 2008.
In all 115 entrants participated
in nine categories at the twoday event, which took place at
the NEC Birmingham.
As well as the prestige of
winning their place as the best
in their chosen specialist field,
entrants were also vying for
£6,000 worth of prizes
provided by the competition’s
sponsors Kinetics Professional
Nail Systems and Associated
Beauty Therapists (ABT).
Each first, second and third
placed winners received
stunning engraved crystal
trophies, plus products and
training. ABT presented each
first placed winner with a
year’s membership including
nail insurance.
The event began early Sunday
morning with the competitions
for Top Tech Liquid & Powder,
Top Tech Gel, and Wrap. After
two and half hours, it was the
turn of the Salon Nail
Challenge competitors, who
had an hour and a half to
complete a perfect set of salon
nails.
Monday morning saw the Top
Tech Sculpt and Top Tech
Newcomers compete, and in
the afternoon Salon Nail Art
Challenge competitors took
centre stage, achieving
unbelievable permanent nail
art results on both hands in
just 90 minutes. They were
joined by students from across
the UK who battled it out for
the prestigious Student Nail
Challenge award.

techniques and advice from
fellow competitors and our
judges, and will be just as
eager to compete again at
future events.”

Director
for Habia
Samantha Golding is the latest top name to join
Habia as a director.
First establishing her own business with the help
of the Princes Trust, Samantha went on to
become Black Business Woman of the Year in
2001 and chaired the Black Women in Business
Forum in 2003.
A member of the City College and Walsall
College of Arts and Technology Employers’
Forum, Samantha also has experience running
two salons in Birmingham.

Georgie Smedley has been awarded
EzFlow International Master Artist
Educator by the American
International Industries (AII) on a
recent visit to Kansas City, USA.

Elise Pilkington scooped not one,
but three major prizes at this
year’s Professional Beauty ExCel
show to become 2008 Final
Championship Winner.
The EzFlow Master Artist Educator
and Sub-Distributor for London had
to prepare her profile with two stepby-steps involving designs - one
using the EzFlow coloured acrylic
range only and another using the
same but with added embellishments.
In addition to her International title,
Georgie also won first place for
producing the best designs!

Northern Heat Championships

BeautyUK 2008 took place at the NEC
Birmingham on Sunday 13th and Monday 14th
April, attracting 10,495 therapists, nail techs,
salon owners and final year students.

The nail sector was well represented by exhibitors, with
leading names present including Bio Sculpture Gel, Entity,
NSI UK, Le Chat, Nails Supreme, Palms Extra, Pro
Impressions, Backscratchers, Zoya, Young Nails and many
more. In total, the event showcased over 200 beauty brands.
Show director Gary Hackett comments: “We are delighted

will continue to grow in size and reputation.”

The belle
of the ball
The theme for this year’s UK Nail Tech
Photographic category was ‘Wedding Belles’,
designed to inspire competitors to create stunning
bridal nails shot in an imaginative way.
The category attracted 34 entries from nail technicians across
the full spectrum of experience from students entering their
first competition to through previous winners. Congratulations
to all of our entrants, in particular our three placed winners,

“My first ideas were to go for something very different from a
traditional ‘wedding shot’ but as my work on nail ideas progressed
I knew it would be more in keeping with the theme and my nail
designs to have a more traditional bride. I wanted the picture to be
bright, pretty and elegant,” explains Claire in her Step-by-Step.

When we can gain extra
information via a person’s
feet, then we can be more
attentive to their needs.
Putting your
foot in it
I have been teaching
professionals how to read
feet for over twelve years,
showing therapists and
practitioners how to read
the signals and indicators
that are ‘written’ in the feet,
hands and nails.
This can add a whole new
dimension to improving
client contact and rapport
building. We frequently
want to know the needs of
our clients but fail to miss
the essentials as the client
may not wish to divulge
anything! It may seem like
an odd way to get to know
someone, but it can be
remarkably accurate.
Foot Reading can give you an insight into your client’s thoughts and feelings.
When we meet our clients
we can only judge and
assess how they are and
what they are feeling by
the impressions that they
give. We all know that
personally we can change
this impression to fit the
occasion i.e. someone
going for an interview may
give the impression of
being confident when in
actual fact they are
quaking in their boots! A
client may be smiling
broadly when they are
actually feeling close to
tears inside and not
showing how they are
really feeling.
I remember once going
for a manicure at a salon
and was late due to road
works and parking
problems. The beautician
was clearly angry with me
for being four minutes late
and told me off for not
phoning ahead. If the
beautician had been able
to read my feet she would
have seen that I was so
close to the edge that I
had actually done well to
go at all! Unfortunately
that reaction led me to
find another salon.
Talking feet
So why does one client
always loose the same
nail, or why does another
suddenly start getting
colour changes in their
feet - what does it say
about them? What do
cracked heels or fingers
mean?
Paying attention to the
shapes and position of
fingers and toes alone can
reveal so much. The
condition of the skin in
various locations can also
reveal more. The colours
vary form person to
person, however generally
they indicate the emotions
and life experience impact
of the person concerned,
plus their natural
strengths.
The main colours to
notice are:
• Red = angry or
embarrassed
• Yellow = fed up
• Blue = feeling hurt
• Green = envious
• Orange = frustrated
These colours do not need
to be vivid but can be
seen as subtle skin tone
shades. The shape of the
toes can also reveal
information on skills and
issues relating to:
• Thoughts and feelings
• Creativity and the way
we do things
• Communication
• Family and security
issues
Some people are very
intuitive and others are very
logical. A person who is
intuitive is likely to have a
much longer second toe than
the other toes (and hallux /
big toe) and will process
everything by the way they
feel about it.
Another person my have a
very large Hallux and will
be likely to ‘think
everything through’. If they
have a fairly long second toe
and both toes touch, this is
an indicator that the person
processes via ‘thinking it
through’ but also checks
their feelings on the subject.
However a third person may
have a large big toe with a
short second toe that does
not touch, and may process
things purely logically.
In all of these cases the
optimum treatment and care
will vary. In the first case
the optimum care will be
gained by explaining how
the treatments will feel and
what happens; asking how
they feel (and really
listening to their response);
and paying attention to the
subtle details of care that
honour the person’s feelings.
The optimum care for the
second case will be more
information based, as well
as checking how they feel.
They may not go ahead with
a treatment if they are not
sure of one aspect
(information vs. feelings). In
the third case, the client will
just want the salient facts
alone and no unnecessary
details.

outside your school gates, a prosperous career in
the nail industry means you’ll need to be a regular
visitor to the classroom. However, exercise books
and metre sticks have been replaced by client
cards and cuticle sticks, and you definitely won’t
get detention for filing your nails in these
classes...
Whether you’re a nail student
embarking on your first steps
in the industry, or a seasoned
nail professional looking to
update and perfect your skills,
education is très important. In
fact, if you’re new to the
industry and want to be
successful, then it could be the
most important investment you
ever make:
“If you are taught correctly in
the beginning and follow your
guidelines, you will get there a
lot quicker,” says René
Lipsitz, Managing Director of
Bio Sculpture GB.
Once business takes off, it’s
important not to let everextending opening hours and
client demands keep you from
continuing your education.
Products and techniques are
constantly changing and
updating, and therefore you
should too:

treatments far outweigh any
problems you may have
getting yourself or your staff
there,” says René. “Every
successful business depends
on an active training
programme.”

course won’t be difficult however finding the right
course can be a daunting task.
If you’re lost amid a sea of
training brochures and
recommendations, then you
might need a little help from

Know what you
want
Okay, so it sounds easier to
say than do, but knowing what
you want to get out of a course
is the first step in finding the
right one. Are you looking to
get a job in a salon or nail bar?
If so, you’ll need to make sure
the course you choose
provides you with a
qualification that prospective
employers will recognise. Do a
little research and find out
what you will need to bag your
ideal job.
Do you want to set up as a
mobile technician? If this is
the case, you’ll need good
quality after-training support,
as you will generally be
working on your own, without
colleagues to put questions to
should you encounter any
problems. Even if you’re not
planning on working alone,
post-course support is a good
thing to have at your disposal:
“Once students complete their
initial training, they should be
able to get support from a
well-trained customer service
department,” says Brenda
Griffin, Director of Training
and Business Development at
LCN. “If they run into
difficulties, it is comforting to
know that there is always
someone on the end of the
phone who can offer advice,
guidance and moral support.”
Do you have a busy lifestyle
or other commitments to fit in
around your course? “Make
sure you can do your training
course without compromising
your current commitments too
much,” advises Tara Oldham,
Head of Education at Lena
White Ltd. “If you burden
yourself by undertaking a
training course that is difficult
to fit around your lifestyle,
you will struggle to
concentrate fully and give your
course the time and
commitment that is required to
pass it.”
Do your
research
“Never take your first option
when exploring training
providers,” advises Jane Cook.
“Take into consideration the
amount of information they
give initially, the promptness
and comprehensive training
information they send you, and
the actual quality of the
content of the course. If you
attend the course, will you
actually be learning new things

that will contribute to you
becoming a better technician?”
Word-of-mouth
recommendations can be
useful, but be aware that what
suited a colleague or friend
might not work for you.
Different courses offer varied
paces of teaching, so go for a
course that offers a pace that
allows you to work at your
best.
Look into the balance of
theoretical and practical work,
what the course covers and
whether you will have to
provide your own models or
equipment. Class sizes can
vary, so look for ones with a
small intake, as the smaller the
class, the more personal
tutoring you should receive
from your educator.
“Whatever course you choose,
make sure that you are fully
aware of the course content,”
adds Tara Oldham. “What will
you learn, what products will
you learn with and what is
expected from you in regards
to coursework, exams etc?”
If you’re an absolute beginner,
then choosing which system to
begin training with can be
tricky. Liquid and powder,
gels, wraps...where do you
start? “Ensure that the course
is not one that offers all three
systems at once,” suggests
Helen Jones, Training
Manager for United Beauty.
“As a beginner, it is far better
to concentrate on mastering
one system before embarking
on another.”

Don’t pay
dearly
The saying goes that there is
no better teacher than
experience, so consider what
life after training may hold. As
well as post-course support,
what else can your prospective
training provider offer you in
terms of professional
development?
Look at the other courses
offered, such as those in
different systems, advanced
courses, or nail art and
competition classes, and
consider whether there is
scope for advancement.
Training might begin and end
with a particular course, but
education is ongoing, and it is
good to know that you can
continue updating your skills
far into the future.
“Price is always a contributing
factor when choosing a course
to attend. However, don’t
necessarily choose the
cheapest or the most expensive
- this isn’t always a true
indication of quality. Ensure
you are getting value for
money, comprehensive
training and an adequate
amount of product to use
during training,” says Jane
Cook.
Check for hidden costs such as
exam fees, which if not
included, can considerably
bump up the price.
Don’t forget that if you’re
embarking on your first
course, or training in a new
system or technique, then your
course needs to be recognised
by your insurance provider, to
enable you to gain adequate
cover to carry out the new
treatments on clients:
“Anyone looking to enter the
nail industry as a professional
nail technician must consider
all the aspects of what
constitutes professional
conduct,” explains Tara
Oldham. “One of the most
important factors of this, but
so often overlooked, is

Salon Nail Challenge - 11⁄2 hours
If you’re not confident producing ‘competition’ nails but want to showcase
your salon work alongside your peers, then Salon Nail Challenge is for you.
The judges are looking for the perfect set of salon nails. The beauty of this
category is that you can use gel finisher on acrylics, plus oil, base coats, top
coats and polish dryers - anything goes that you would use in a salon to
achieve your required look.
Top Techs - 21⁄2 hours
Salon Nail Art Challenge - 11⁄2 hours
First introduced in 2007, the Top Tech categories are designed for technicians
who can competently complete a set of competition nails in two and a half hours
using their chosen system or discipline.
These categories allow you to compete against the nail crème de la crème, and
even if you’ve never entered a professional competition before, the Newcomers
category gives you the chance to test your skills under competition conditions.
Photographic
‘The 1960’s’ has been chosen as the theme for this year’s Photographic
competition. Judges will be looking for the best ‘cover shot’ which encapsulates
this theme - so get groovy baby! The winning image will be featured in both
The Nail File and Guild News. You can either supply your entry by special
delivery before Wednesday 7th May, or on the day before 11 am.
Permanent Nail Art on both hands using coloured acrylics, gels and glitters
etc. You can use skills of encapsulation, 3D or others but your design must
be deemed as commercially wearable.
Student Nail Art Challenge - 21⁄2 hours
Just like the Salon challenge, the judges are looking for the student who can
produce the perfect set of salon nails. Lecturers can nominate their students
to enter - either enter all of your nail students or perhaps run your own mini
competition and put forward your top three.

Playing it safe
Safety and hygiene in Nail Salons has been a hot topic for many
years and the industry has made phenomenal progress in increasing
standards of both salon hygiene and level of qualifications achieved.
Victoria Smith, founder of Safe Salons, discusses regulating the nail
industry in the UK.
Despite recent progress within our industry, there
is still no regulation denying ill-qualified
technicians the freedom to operate and even open
Nail Salons. This has resulted in the standard of
work throughout the industry being incredibly
inconsistent, which in turn has alienated some
consumers.
Alongside this lack of
regulation the infiltration
of the ‘Non Standard
Salon’ (NSS) to the UK
has ultimately decreased
consumer confidence in
the provision of Nail
Services. The term ‘Non
Standard Salon’ is used to
describe those salons that
are usually associated
with poor hygiene,
insufficient training and
low-grade products.
In turn ‘low-grade products’ commonly indicates
the use of a deleterious
substance known as
Methyl Methacrylate, also
referred to as MMA.

a very rigid nail

cause excessive trauma to
the natural nail if put

seems hard to believe
when looking at the
increasing year on year
growth of the Health and
Beauty industry as a
whole. Fully qualified
Nail Technicians should
have the opportunity to
build their businesses and
be rewarded for their hard
work and dedication to
continual training and
improvement as well as
providing a safe salon
environment for their
clients.
Industry professionals
have worked hard to
raise the reputation of the
UK Nail business and
have done so internally.
The fundamental aim
however is to encourage
clients to desire
professional nail
services, increasing
demand and ultimately
resulting in industry
growth. In order to do
this we must educate the
consumer.
Safe Salons is an
independent assessment
scheme focused on
providing the consumer
market with
uncomplicated, easy to
understand explanations
of various products and
services provided by Nail
Technicians. The
website also has a salon
locator in order for all
consumers to be able to
find a Safe Salon close to
them.
In order for salons to
subscribe, each must be
visited by a Safe Salons
representative to ensure
minimum levels of
requirements are upheld.
This is the first industry
scheme to provide
account managers to
ensure not only are
standards achieved but
that they are maintained.
Regular skill building is
encouraged with Safe
Salons subscribers being
put into contact with
endorsed education
academies. Safe Salons
aims to become the
number one website for
customers seeking
professional services and
is working on national
advertising campaigns to
increase presence within
the consumer market.
Safe Salons is also
liaising with local MP’s
to help raise the
awareness of public
health issues in the hope
that our industry will in
fact become regulated,
diminishing the number
of unqualified technicians
operating within the UK.

Nailing education
It’s hard to believe that only five years ago, the nail service industry didn’t
have its own national occupational standards. Today the industry has its
own, completely separate from beauty therapy. Not only that, but the new
Diploma in Hair and Beauty Studies, which includes aspects of nail
services, will begin in schools from 2009 and reach all schools in England
by 2013, explains Gill Morris, Habia’s Employer Champion for the
Diploma.
It’s quite a feat, and one
that the nail industry
should be very proud of.
Until now the USA has led
the way, but, as the first to
offer such qualifications,
the UK is setting the
standard for nail service
training and education for
the rest of the world. The
USA is now asking when
they will be getting the
Diploma!
These are very exciting
times for the industry. The
Diploma in Hair and
Beauty Studies is expected
to be one of the most
popular of all which will
mean that from 2011
onwards there will be an
army of young people
leaving school fully
equipped with industry
background knowledge to
begin their training as nail
technicians.
To understand how it will
work it’s important to
remember that the Diploma
is not designed to give
learners the ability to go
straight into work in the
nail sector, or in hair,
beauty, or Spa, as it is not
vocational training. The

Diploma helps to make
sure that young peoples’
study is of interest to them,
so they have the
information to make
informed choices about
their potential career paths
and, as importantly, will
provide young people with
the vital skills that
employers require.
At present, learners have to
choose between two forms
of learning, vocational or
academic. However, the
vocational options are
normally unavailable to
learners until the age of 16.
Now, with the Diploma,
students can begin to
explore both types of
learning from age 14 with
a new pathway for learners
called applied learning.
Applied learning offers a
real alternative to
traditional learning in
schools. It offers a blend of
academic and job related
learning, which helps
students develop not only
their English, Maths and
ICT, but the kind of
transferable employability
skills that employers are
looking for. Learners may
study in a school or in a
workplace setting, gaining
knowledge of the skills
and attributes required to
work in the nail industry,
as well as hair, beauty or
Spa.
This means that learners
are able to see how their
academic subjects relate to
a job. The Diploma will
also help to entice people
into the nail industry as
they discover how multifaceted it is. For instance,
many school pupils who
enjoy Art or Design and
Technology lessons may
not realise that their
creativity could be
channelled into a field like
Nail Art.
Diplomas will be available
at Foundation, Higher and
Advanced levels, and are
designed to give young
people the skills and
knowledge necessary to
progress into employment,
training and further or
higher education. In terms
of workload and
achievement, the
Foundation Diploma will
be equivalent to four to
five GCSEs, Higher
Diploma will be equivalent
to five to six GCSEs,
whilst the Advanced
Diploma will be equivalent
to three and a half A
Levels.
On the Foundation
Diploma learners will
discover all aspects of
basic hand and nail care
services, using a range of
products and gaining an
insight in the technological
developments in the nail
industry - they can even
opt to choose an additional
topic, such as an
introduction to nail art.
This knowledge can then
be developed further at the
Higher Diploma by
completing a topic that
includes hand and nail art,
and at the Advanced
Diploma; an introduction
to nail enhancements.
All Diplomas will include
three areas of learning
which are: principal
learning, generic learning
and additional specialist
learning.
Principal learning develops
selected knowledge,
understanding and skills
relevant to the hair and
beauty sector, using a
realistic learning environment that is complemented
by a minimum of 10 days’
work experience.
Additional specialist
learning will allow learners
to tailor their study choices
to their interests and goals.
This may include further
topics, such as nail
enhancements, but the
learner can also
complement their studies
with further GCSEs and A
Levels.
The Generic Learning
section will ensure that all
Diploma learners cover
common skills which are
key to successful learning
and future employment.
This includes Maths,
English and ICT, which
will make sure the learner
has a wide knowledge
base. This generic learning
will often be set in an
applied or sector-related
context, making it more
experiential and interesting
for the learner. So while
studying GCSEs or A
Levels, young people can
get practical, firsthand
experience and an insight
into the world of work
across the hair and beauty
landscape, helping them to
decide where their true
skills and interests lie,
such as nails.
A theme that runs through
the Diploma is that of
employability skills,
specific to the hair and
beauty sector as identified
in consultations with
industry employers, and
the development of
personal, learning and
thinking skills. All of
these skills are developed
within the context of the
industry, resulting in new
recruits already possessing
the vital attributes and
appreciating the
importance of teamwork,
personal and professional
ethics, flexible working,
customer care, positive
attitude, self management,
creativity and leadership.
So as you can see, the
Diploma offers the learner
an ideal mix of knowledge
which reflects the
requirements of the hair
and beauty industry.
Taking a Diploma will
help young people
improve their future,
whether that is in further
and higher education or
straight into the
workplace. In turn
employers will benefit
hugely from the Diplomas
by the introduction of
skilled and knowledgeable
individuals into the
industry.
It’s a win, win situation for
all and I am very excited
for our future generations.

OPI Microbond Gel is a true
enhancement system developed for
the purpose of extending the natural
nail through either a tip and overlay
method or by using sculpting
techniques.
1 Sanitise both yours and your client’s hands
using OPI Swiss Guard Antiseptic Hand
Gel.
Using the OPI pusher plus and Avoplex
cuticle exfoliator gently remove any true
cuticle from the nail plate.
Remove debris from the nail plate using a
wipe sprayed with NAS 99.
Remove shine from the natural nail using
the OPI Smoother Phat file and remove the
dust particles with the fluffy nail duster.
Sanitise the nail using NAS 99 Antiseptic
Nail Spray and apply one coat of BondAid.
2 Size your OPI Expansion tip and apply to
the nail using mach 5 quick setting
adhesive. Cut the tip to size and gently
blend the well area of the tip using the OPI
180 grit silver cushion file.
Remove Dust particles with the Fluffy
duster, sanitise with NAS 99 and apply one
coat of BondAid to the natural nail only.
3 Apply a vertical line of MicroBase gel
along the centre of the nail from cuticle to
tip and gently glide the gel out over the nail,
remembering to cap the free edge. The
finished effect should be smooth and glossy
with no dull patches.
4 Cure under the OPI UV Lamp for 75
seconds.
5 Remove the hand from the UV lamp and
apply a vertical line of Microveneer gel
down the centre of the nail from the cuticle
to the tip and again gently glide the gel over
the nail plate, making sure not to leave any
dull patches in the gel.
Wrap the gel around the free edge to prevent
the gel from separating at the free edge.
6 Hold the finger upside down for
approximately 30 seconds to allow a C
Curve to form. Cure for 75 seconds.
Remove the hand from the lamp and Repeat
steps 5 and 6.
7 Remove the sticky surface layer of gel using
the Microbond Antiseptic wipe solution and
an OPI expert touch lint free nail wipe.
Shape the nail using the OPI 180 grit silver
cushion file and remove any dust using the
fluffy nail duster.
8 Cleanse the nail using the Microbond
Antiseptic wipe solution.
9 Apply Microsealer gel in a vertical line
along the nail from cuticle to free edge and
gently glide the gel on remembering to wrap
the free edge.
Cure for 135 seconds and wipe.
10 Finish the nail by gently massaging Avoplex
cuticle oil into the nail cuticle and nail

We know they’re bad, but what are they?
Callus
A callus is a diffused
thickened area of the
skin, usually found on
the hands and feet,
which occurs in
response to repeated
contact or pressure on
the skin. They are
usually found over and
around prominent bones
and appear as
discoloured yellow skin.
Calluses can be painful,
causing a burning
sensation, and can
sometimes lead to
bacterial infections if
not treated properly.
Corn
Also known as a
clavus, a corn is
similar to a callus as
they too are caused
by a thickening of
the skin, but are
smaller and have a
‘core’ focal point,
likened to a hard
centre.
Hard corns are
generally found on
the outer toes, and
can occur under or be
surrounded by
calluses. Soft corns
can occur between
the toes.
Verrucas
A verruca, or plantar
wart, is most often
found on the sole of the
foot. Similar in
appearance to corns,
verrucas are slightly
raised and surrounded
by hard skin, and their
surface is ‘peppered’
with black dots (which
are actually small blood
vessels). Whereas a
corn is simply built-up
hard skin, a verruca is
caused by a viral
infection and so needs
to be treated properly advise clients to seek
treatment from a
pharmacy or
chiropodist.

It’s a file art

You must shape the
nail using the file in
one direction to
ensure a smooth
finish and prevent
trauma.
There’s more to filing than meets the eye.
Incorrect filing can cause trauma to the nail which
can result in weak nails that will peel and break
and even cause long-term trauma. With a little bit
of know-how, practice and care, filing and
shaping is easy.
It is important that you always
use a soft file on the natural
nail and never use a file that is
any lower than 240 grit. If you
use a high grit file you will
most certainly damage the
nail. You must shape the nail
using the file in one direction,
either from side to side or into
the middle, this will ensure a
smooth finish and will prevent
any trauma or splitting.
Make sure not to ‘see saw’ the
natural nail with a file, as this
will weaken the nail and also
cause breaking and splitting.
When using a new file you
must remove the sharp edges
with a white block to soften
them otherwise you could cut
the client’s skin.
When filing a nail into shape it
is easiest when hard and
before the nails have been
soaked in water or oil. This is
due to the nail’s tendency to
bend when over-hydrated. Any
moisture will disturb the
natural bonds between the nail
plate layers and so it will be
more difficult to achieve an
even and smooth edge.
If the nails are particularly
hard however, it is advisable to
soak the hands and nails in
order to soften them slightly
before filing, this will make
filing easier and cause fewer
traumas to the nail.
If you need to take away a
substantial amount of the
client’s nail it is better to use a
sharp pair of nail scissors or
clippers followed by a fine grit
file.
After filing away length from
the nail, use the file in a
downwards motion on the free
edge to remove any built up
debris; this is known as
‘bevelling’ the edge.
Whilst filing always pull the
skin tight at either side of the
nail with your thumb and
forefinger, this will give you
more control and will also
prevent you from cutting your
client’s skin.
Once the desired length has
been achieved, you must
‘bevel’ the top of the nail to
seal the nail plate. It is
important to angle the file
slightly under the edge to
perfect the final shape and
again seal in the edge of the
layers. The top layer of the
nail is harder than the lower
layers so by making it slightly
longer you will help to protect
the nail from traumas such as
when your clients type or tap
their nails on a desk, which
will also cause the weakening
or peeling of the nail.
Make sure not to
‘see saw’ the natural
nail, as this will
weaken the nail . . .
The shape of the filed nail
should be to the preference of
the client who may like to
follow the current fashion or
have a specific personal
preference. If a client has no
real preference and leaves the
decision to you, the shape that
best suits the finger is the one
that mirrors the shape of the
cuticle. Other shape options
would be oval, square,
‘squoval’, or tapered.
It is important with all shapes
to maintain the strength of the
nail. The weakest part of the
nail is on the sides where it
leaves the protection of the
lateral nail fold. This is one of
the most common breakages to
occur. The edge of the nail
plate where it leaves this part
of the finger is quite thick but
if it is filed away too much, a
thinner and weaker nail plate
is exposed.
Nails are naturally weaker
when long and so it would be
difficult to grow nails to a long
length if they are in poor
condition or peeling. Even
though clients preference is
important, you can use the
general rule that a natural nail
will be reasonably strong and
look good if the free edge is
no longer than a third of the
length of the nail bed. This can
be thought of as the ‘pink and
white’ parts. If the white is too
long and weak it will not look
attractive. If your client prefers
a longer white section yet has
weak nails, you can give the
nails a natural French
Manicure polish, this will not
only make nails look lovely
but will give them added
strength.
Ensure you use a base coat as
this will protect the natural
nail from staining and will
provide an even and perfect
surface for the nail lacquer to
adhere to. Finish with a top
coat to seal in the look and to
give your client’s nails a high
gloss finish.

Pinks launch new courses
Hot on the heels of their new
Pinks Organic product range,
Pinks Academy have launched
their new signature Indonesian
Manicure and Himalayan
Pedicure courses.
Kirstie Allen, Director of
Pinks Academy, has designed
the courses especially for
students who want to offer
their clients a luxury
alternative to standard
manicure or pedicure
treatments. The half-day
course teaches students how to
take their client on a ‘journey’
using products and techniques
collected and influenced by
Kirstie’s travels around the
world, and in particular
throughout Asia.
“Manicures and pedicures are
so often dull standard
treatments,” says Kirstie. “Our
aim is to teach students how to
create a ‘spa’ experience for
their clients. The process is a
journey, from the initial tea
ceremony and aromatic
welcoming through to
finishing.”
Forthcoming course dates are
27th May at Pinks’ Derby
branch, and 12th June at the
Tamworth branch.

Goan Experience
introduces Henna
The Goan Experience has added Henna hand painting to their
range of courses.
The introduction to Henna, also known as Mehndi in India, is
offered as an optional extra on any of the normal courses, and
serves as an excellent introduction to the popular Indian hand
decoration.
“Henna is a tattoo-like decoration work by young women at
weddings and festivals,” says The Goan Experience’s John
McClements. “The design is created with henna paste which is
made from ground henna leaves mixed with oil or water.”
