Come get to know our Old Globe/USD Shiley Graduate Theatre Program students at the Guilders’ Annual MFA Luncheon at Tom Ham’s
Lighthouse Restaurant on February 22nd! You will have an opportunity to meet the fantastic Class of 2017, enjoy a terrific lunch with
friends and bid on a special Chinese Opportunity Drawing!
The morning will kick off at 11:00 am with a no-host social hour always fun. And the committee has some very special gifts and surprises for the Chinese Opportunity Drawing. You won’t want to
miss your chance at winning! Luncheon will be served at noon after
a welcome by our president, Angie DeCaro. There will be a choice
of Mahi Mahi, Braised Short Ribs or a vegetarian Portobello Napoleon. The entrée will be followed by a scrumptious chocolate dessert
creation by the chef.
After lunch, the incredibly talented class of 2017 will treat us to a
theatrical presentation, after which Jane Cowgill will facilitate the
audience in “Getting to Know” the students better with her usual
aplomb.
This luncheon promises to be one of the highlights of our year.
Tom Ham’s Lighthouse has recently been completely
remodeled, and the restaurant’s ambiance plus the
breathtaking views will provide a lovely setting for our gathering.

The plans for the 26th Annual Globe
Guilder Fashion Show are underway.
The committee is in place and will begin
work in February. This year the Fashion
Show will be Monday, August 22nd in
the brand new ballroom at The Marriott
Marquis San Diego Marina. Honorary
Chairs for this year’s Fashion Show will
be Barbara and Dick Enberg with Stacey
and Robert Foxworth.
Please consider donating to the Silent
Auction. Mary Roberts is the chair of this
important aspect of the Fashion Show’s
fund-raising efforts. Look for your SaveThe-Date Card which will be mailed in
the Spring. All funds raised go directly
to support The Old Globe and its education, artistic, arts engagement and community programs.

LETTER FROM BARRY AND MICHAEL
Dear Globe Guilders,
Happy New Year from the Globe! We’re excited for 2016 and our ambitious plans for the year, beginning with the first of our two upcoming
productions: The Metromaniacs, a smart, fun, “translaptation,” directed
by the legendary Michael Kahn, which takes place in 18th-century Paris (and is sponsored in part by the Globe Guilders!). Next up will be
The Last Match, a new play that was part of our 2014 New Voices Festival play reading series and that we are incredibly proud is now a full production in our regular season. In March, we begin previews for Rain, Barry’s musical theatre debut based
on Somerset Maugham’s classic story. Set in 1924, this brand-new musical tells the tale of a group of travelers on an island in Western Samoa and features Maugham’s iconic character Sadie Thompson. The rest
of the year is full of world premieres, Shakespeare, talented artists, world-class directors – a number of
whom are Artistic Directors at their own theatres – and more, and is not to be missed.
When you visit us at the theatre, we hope that you will also have a chance to meet our new Director of Arts
Engagement, Freedome Bradley-Ballentine. With his team and the help of everyone in the Globe family,
Freedome is set to make great strides in the San Diego community. He will be visiting groups, venues and
organizations throughout the county as we continue to learn about the needs of our vast population and
the Globe’s role in it. We will be organizing a number of events to introduce our Arts Engagement Department to our wonderful supporters and friends, and look forward to seeing you at one of these occasions.
As always, we thank you tremendously for your amazing commitment to the Globe. We eagerly anticipate
enjoying your company at the theatre, MFA and membership luncheons, Awards Night, the Fashion Show,
Meet and Greets, and any other time we have the chance!

dedicated to supporting volunteers, and the staff they work with, at professional, non-profit theatres. Regardless of a theatre's volunteer structure
(guild, association, individual, etc.), CAVORT has something to offer to

Why attend the Conference....
Network with other volunteers! Conference-goers will have the chance to
network with their counterparts from theatres across the United States and
Canada throughout the conference. They will be able to interact with other
volunteers to discover what services they provide for their theatres and
how they go about performing them.
An extended roundtable experience will give participants a chance to
learn how volunteers at numerous theatres handle everything from recruitment to rewards and lots of interests in between. Roundtable topics will
include volunteer matters such as starting and managing a volunteer program, recruitment and retention of volunteers, theatre services provided
by volunteers and communication with and among volunteers.
Volunteer sessions will address fundraising, the advocacy role of volunteers, volunteering for student performances, accessibility, and engaging
millennials. Many of the sessions will feature panels with representatives
from different theatres sharing their strategies as well as providing the
audience with a chance to “pick their brains.”

HISTORY MOMENT #5 - THE MEN
Shakespeare at the Old Globe is a thread running
through the Globe's story. Many actors performed
in the Globe's Shakespeare Festival early
in their careers. Among them are Dennis Hopper,
Victor Buono, Christopher Walken and Kelsey
Grammer.
Dennis Hopper was a member of the Globe's sum1
mer Shakespeare repertory company in the early
50s. But, he also performed in the winter season
productions The Rose and the Ring, and the light
comedy Cheaper by the Dozen. Craig Noel directed that last show, showcasing Hopper's come1 talent. Hopper credited his successful acting career to Noel, 2speaking

4 The renowned actor, Christopher Walken played Marc Antony in Julius
Caesar at the Globe in 1969, also appearing there in two Shakespeare
productions in 1972. He acted in repertory, working professionally and
gaining valuable theatre experience. He also acted in the Ontario,
Canada Shakespeare Festival, making him not unlike the early 1935 Globe
Players, who traveled from one Shakespeare Festival to another. The
difference was the 1935 Globe Players performed in abbreviated versions
of the Bard's work, while later festivals produced entire plays, though
they were sometimes artfully edited.

After attending acting school at Juilliard, Kelsey Grammer had a three
year internship at the Globe in the late 1970s, performing in plays by 7
Shakespeare and Shaw. He followed his Globe stint with work at the
Guthrie Theatre in Minneapolis. Now, he is well known for the hit TV
show Frasier and for his many Broadway performances. Among his other

assignments, he has provided
the voice of Sideshow Bob on The Simpsons.
The Old Globe has been the training ground for some of our country's
finest actors. It continues to be a magnet for talent.
