Welcome back, I hope that everyone had a great Holiday break and you are
ready to finish the last half of the school year. During the month our Teachers
and Reading Specialist will be administering the DRA to all of the students.
The Developmental Reading Assessment (DRA) is an individually
administered assessment of a child’s reading capabilities. It is a tool to be used
by teachers to identify a student’s reading level, accuracy, fluency, and
comprehension. Once levels are identified, our teachers can use this
information for instructional planning purposes.
How DRA Levels and Testing Work Together:
Tasks measured by the DRA test are divided into several skill sets. Rhyming,
alliteration, segmentation, and phonemic awareness are tested in the
phonemic awareness section. Letter naming, word-list reading, spelling,
decoding, analogies, structural analysis, and syllabication are tested in the
alphabetic principle/phonics portions. Oral reading fluency or words per
minute for contextual reading are tested under fluency. Vocabulary,
comprehension, and reading engagement skills are also measured in the test.
After the test is evaluated and scored, your child is assigned a numeric (or
alphanumeric for very early readers) DRA level A1 through 80. Children with
stronger reading abilities yield higher numbers. Teachers are easily able to
give children books they can read by choosing a text with the corresponding
DRA level
Thank you to all of the parents, grandparents, and family members who
attended our fourth and fifth grades Holiday Concert. The Rainbow students
had a great showing of support from you and they really appreciate your
support. A special thank you to Mrs. Givler, Mr. Hartwell and our fourth and
fifth grade teachers who spent countless hours preparing our students for the
show. The show was amazing and the students really are getting great at
performing in front of an audience. I would also like to thank Mr. Wise, Mrs.
Cupstid and Mrs. Guyer for practicing and performing during the concert.
Winter is here so please make sure that the students come dressed in
appropriate clothing during these chilly months. We take the students outside
as often as possible, because they need their exercise and to run off some of
their energy.
When dropping the students off in the morning please make sure you pull all
the way and have the students get off from the right hand side of the vehicles.
This is the safest way for the students to exit. Please do not drop off the
students until you have passed the One Way sign. In addition do not pull up
and pass people in the loop, this could cause an accident and we don’t want
anyone to get hurt at Rainbow.

GARDEN CLUB – FEBRUARY MEETING
The Garden Club is an after-school club that is open to students from Kindergarten through
5th Grade. We meet once a month to do garden and recycling activities. This year we will
meet from 4-5PM. Your parent is responsible for providing transportation home from school
at 5PM. Look for the monthly permission slips in the school newsletter if you are interested
in attending garden club meetings. You need a new signed permission to stay after school
each month.
This permission slip will allow you to stay after school on TUESDAY, FEBRUARY 17, 2015.
Please note that we switched our meeting to Tuesday because Variety Show Practice is every
Wednesday in February!
We will be making Edible Heart Shaped Bird Feeders. 1 heart bird feeder will be made with
cheerios. The 2nd heart bird feeder will be made out of bread and bird seed. The birds will
be able to have a tasty treat during the cold winter month of February.
The cost is $5 total for the February meeting. This will cover the cost of supplies and snack
for the meeting.
Contact Mrs. Chrisman or Mrs. Teel if you have any questions about the Garden Club.

COUNSELOR’S CORNER
HANDLING HOLIDAY STRESS
While the holidays bring us many joys – getting together with friends and
family, yummy food, thoughtful gifts – they can also bring about an
incredible amount of stress! Research shows that genuine happiness is
about how we feel inside. Here are some research-based tips that may help
keep your mind healthy!
Set your intention to enjoy the holidays! Make a conscious decision to open
yourself up to happiness!
Take a break to regain your focus! Feeling overwhelmed by everything on
your To Do list? Take a few deep breaks, take a break and enjoy a cup of tea, a hot bath,
yoga or some other exercise. Research indicates it is well worth it to slow down and
regain your focus.
Set expectations ! Talk to your kids about expectations for gifts and holiday
activities. Be open with them if money is an issue. Depending on a child's age, parents
can use this as an opportunity to teach their kids about the value of money and
responsible spending. Be realistic.
Keep things in perspective ! Try to consider stressful situations in a broader
context and keep a long-term perspective. Avoid blowing events out of proportion and
teach your kids how to keep things in perspective, including what type and the number
of gifts they receive.
Make connections ! Good relationships with family and friends are important. So
view the holidays as a time to reconnect with people. Additionally, accepting help and
support from those who care about you can help alleviate stress. Even volunteering at
a local charity with your kids is a good way to connect with others. Assist someone in
need and teach your kids about the value of helping others.

Practice generosity! If you feel the impulse to be generous, act on it! Notice how
good it feels inside when you see someone happy because of your sincere generosity!
This can be as simple as opening the door for someone, or giving someone your
attention.
Play and have fun! Remember what it was like when you were a child during the
holidays? Let yourself experience that again! Tune in to and take delight in your
child’s enthusiasm! Singing and dancing are excellent ways to open ourselves up to joy
and fun!
Happy Holidays!
