Discover Culture
Welcome to Indio
As Mayor of the City of Indio, I am excited
to welcome you to the “City of Festivals.”
This year marks the 85th Anniversary of the City’s
incorporation. A series of monthly events and
community activities are planned in recognition of
this occasion, so we hope you will join us for this
highly anticipated year-long celebration.
As host to many world famous festivals and events,
hundreds of thousands of visitors come each year
to live and play. We are home to the Indio
Southwest Arts Festival and International Tamale
Festival in the winter, and the Coachella Valley
Music and Arts Festival (also known as Coachella)
and Stagecoach in the spring.
The City of Indio is truly a premier destination to
be experienced. Downtown Indio is located along
historic U.S. Route 99 in what is known as Old
Town Indio and features everything from quaint
antique shops to cozy boutiques. Shopping does not
end there – we also have numerous retail centers
containing big box shopping (superstores) as well as
a variety of fashion choices.
The City of Indio continues to grow and is open
for business. Multi-million dollar commercial
investments and private job creations continue to
strengthen the local economic base. Indio’s business
community is loyal and determined to make our
economy even stronger. The Chamber of
Commerce has nearly 800 active members to
guarantee that our visitors and residents will have
access to the best retail, dining, and entertainment
options in the Coachella Valley.
Have a great time in our City, and I look forward
to meeting you soon.
With gratitude,
Lupe Ramos Watson

Stepping Through Time
Entering the gates of the Coachella Valley History
Museum, under the Valley’s oldest cork oak tree, is
like stepping back in time. It is the only Museum in
the Valley that covers the history of the entire valley,
from Desert Hot Springs to the Salton Sea.
Visitors can explore the 1926 Smiley-Tyler adobe
home, originally the home and office of a doctor
and later a dentist. Today the home includes
rooms dedicated to a continuing exhibit of Cahuilla
Indian artifacts and baskets, bygone scenes of the
Salton Sea, the history of water and agriculture in
the valley, the Southern Pacific Railway and its
early volunteer Fire Department, and a 1926
furnished kitchen.
Also on campus, the California Date History
Museum, the former City Library building, houses
exhibits relating to the date industry and the
Riverside County Fair and National Date Festival;
This is the world’s only museum dedicated to the
date palm and its fruit, tracing its history from
ancient times in the Middle East through its
importation to the Coachella Valley; 90% of the
dates commercially grown in the United States
are grown in the Coachella Valley. Attached to
this building is the Medjool Auditorium, used for
Museum and community events, and is the site of
The 85th Birthday of Indio exhibit running from
January to May 2015.
10
Liz Gardner Lindsay
Throughout the almost two-acre grounds there are
gardens relating to the eras of the Coachella Valley
such as the Cahuilla garden, the Japanese garden,
the varietal date grove, etc.
Additionally, there is an art studio, a blacksmith’s
shop, a railroad “submarine,” the 1921 Whittier
Ranch Water Tower, a display of adobe wall
construction, outdoor displays of agricultural
equipment, and small storage and work buildings.
The Museum is open October through May and
admission is free the second weekend of each
month. The Archives are open all year round and
is available for research by appointment.
Located at 82616 Miles Avenue, Indio, the Coachella
Valley History Museum is open Thursday - Saturday,
10AM - 4PM, and on Sunday from 1 - 4PM, with free
parking across Miles Avenue. Private and group tours
are available by appointment.
For information on the museum as well as its special
events, call 760-342-6651, or go to
www.cvhm.org.
The Stars of Indio
Some say the lights shine brightest in Hollywood, but
the sparkle of talent and entertainment can
sometimes shine bright in your very own
neighborhood. That is the case in the heart of Old
Town Indio where you can find the Indio Performing
Arts Center, or “IPAC.” IPAC is a community theatre
that serves to not only entertain the community, but
to offer an outlet for the creative expression of
performing arts to locals.
The Indio Performing Arts Center is governed by a
non-profit board of directors and sponsored by the
City of Indio. This beautiful facility is truly a
multi-faceted complex. The main Exposition Hall
can host up to 300 people and serves as the main
stage for large acts and performances. The facility
also boasts three attached theaters that serve the
visual and performing arts, one for live performances
and two additional cinema theaters for movies. The
facility is available through rental to the community
for special occasions, but the primary purpose of
IPAC is to serve up entertainment.
During the course of the year you can catch
comedy festivals, live band performances, and
movie screenings. While keeping the community
entertained, perhaps the best part of IPAC is the
opportunity it provides to local artists to express
their talent. “IPAC is one of the best locales
for performers, featuring a variety of
entertainment possibilities.
Joshua R. Bonner
It can be intimate and professional at the same time”
says Ron Young, a local resident who performs on
stage with his theater group. “Community theatre is
vital in that it gives entertainment to the masses,
allows people to see productions they might never
have a chance to see otherwise, and it gives some of
the greatest unsung talent a chance to perform. It is
amazing how many people have great acting ability
but will never get a chance to be in Hollywood or
New York. This gives them the chance to be
showcased locally.”
IPAC also serves as a learning center for those who
wish to tackle theater for the first time, or for those
who just want to pick up a new hobby. Seminars on
acting, stage comedy and many other art disciplines
can be found throughout the year. If you have an itch
for theater or simply want to take in a great live
show, come out and visit the Indio Performing Arts
Center. You will discover the local pulse
of entertainment!
For more information on the
Indio Performing Arts Center, please visit
www.indioperformingartscenter.org.
You can also reach the theater by phone at
760-775-5200. The theater is located at
45175 Fargo Street in Old Town Indio.

An Entertainment Oasis
Indio Entertainment
The American Southwest has a truly unique culture,
with a landscape, climate, and people all its own.
Nowhere is this history and culture on better
display than in Indio. From the date gardens of
Shields, to the original “Submarine Cooler” used by
early desert pioneers on display at the Coachella
Valley History Museum, Indio features the desert in
ways every visitor must see. Take your next
adventure in Indio, you may just find the desert
lifestyle growing on you.
Date Capitol of the World
A testament to its roots, Indio remains synonymous
with the date industry. Dates have been a staple
food of the Middle East for thousands of years.
They are believed to have originated around Iraq,
and have been cultivated since ancient times from
Mesopotamia to prehistoric Egypt, possibly as early
as 4000 BCE. In more recent times they have found
a home in the dry climate and ample sunshine of the
Coachella Valley. The Indio area is host to one of the
region’s most famous date gardens.
12
Oasis Date Gardens
This 175-acre working date garden is home to the
Medjool and many other delicious variety of dates.
Founded in 1912, Oasis Date Gardens has grown to
include a large packinghouse and retail store.
Oasis Date Gardens has developed a reputation for
excellence and quality, developing a distribution
network that spans from the far East to Europe.
Don’t miss the opportunity to sample their
delicious fruit.

Shields Date Gardens
Floyd and Bess Shields came to the California desert
in 1924 and started Shields Date Garden, working
long and hard to build up their business and educate
their customers about date culture. In the beginning,
Mr. Shields would give his lecture in the garden. As
the popularity of his lecture grew, Mr. Shields
incorporated a slide show, then recorded his
presentation in conjunction with the slide show so
that the show could be run several times a day.
Today, the 15-minute film ‘Romance and Sex Life of
the Date’ shows continuously during store hours,
where you can still hear Mr. Shields talking about his
favorite subject: the date. Complete with a café,
retail store, and walking garden, Shields is one of
the Coachella Valley’s top tourist destinations.

Desert History
Studying the history of the desert region you find
many footprints in the sand that created the desert
paradise we know today. The Native American
people who inhabited the desert region for
centuries left their mark on early desert life,
including agriculture and water conservation.
Early railroad workers laid the groundwork for
industry to make its way through the valley and
spur the rapid growth of California. Even General
George Patton left his mark, training his troops at
the Desert Training Center in preparation for what
would eventually lead to important victories in
Africa and Europe. History is all around you in Indio.
Coachella Valley Museum
The museum is a historical campus which contains
the 1926 adobe Smiley-Tyler House which houses
their main exhibits, the historic 1909 Indio
Schoolhouse and the world's only Date Museum.
Other highlights include their Desert Submarine, a
Blacksmith's shop, pioneer farming implements and
the archives for the Historical Society. Their
spacious grounds hold a variety of gardens which
include a Memorial Date Garden, Japanese Garden,
the Geissler Rose Garden, and the oldest Cork Tree
in the Coachella Valley.

Make Your Dreams Come True
Luxurious weddings, remarkable corporate parties,
and thrilling sports events – all take place in one
magical desert setting, Empire Polo Club. Empire’s
lush gardens, grand polo fields, and majestic lake
create an extraordinary oasis in the greater Palm
Springs area that is a destination for the rich, the
famous, and the discerning patron.
Opening in 1987 as a world-class polo club, Empire
Polo Club quickly earned acclaim as a luxury event
destination. Its reputation grew as it developed into
a setting for Fortune 500 corporate events and
meetings, as well as some of the most extravagant
luxury weddings ever envisioned.
Superbly well-designed and stylish ceremonies have
taken place on this vast estate that boasts over 300
acres and four exclusive venues, along with pristine
polo fields. Private events can accommodate small
groups for intimate affairs or transform into grand
scale concert-like settings for crowds reaching
90,000. Monumental mountain views, gorgeous
gardens, sensational statuary, art and landscaping
give Empire an ambiance unlike any other in the
Coachella Valley.
According to Bianca Nolasco,Venue and Events
Manager, “We are poised to create memorable
custom weddings and meet any needs to bring a
bride and groom’s vision to life. Our elegant natural
setting becomes the backdrop for your blank canvas.
Due to the size of the property and its open spaces,
you are only limited by your imagination…the
possibilities are endless.”
16
Michelle Roe
Nolasco knows every inch of this beautiful property
having grown up here as the daughter of Empire’s
own grounds Superintendent. She has lived and
worked at Empire for over 16 years, giving her a
significant insight that allows her to craft exquisite
celebrations as well as to provide the personal
touch that many wedding planners seek. Nolasco’s
special history also allows her to take advantage of
the various aspects of Empire’s exceptional scenery.
The Medjhool Lake area is a tropical paradise
worthy of a Gatsby extravaganza. Privileged
entrances that lead to meandering paths laced with
lush greenery and secret nooks can be found in
every corner. A hidden gem inside the property, the
lake view venue is like a secret garden. Statues of
winged horses and unicorns, peaceful benches,
shaded terraces and an elevated stage surrounded
by Roman columns are reminiscent of a
Midsummer’s Nights Dream party. Big band sounds
and soothing violin notes are both comfortable
musical options depending on the desired mood.
Under the soft luminescence of twinkling lights,
bridges take guests through arbors and over koi
ponds and lily pads to a splendid tented theatre
gracing the polo fields.
The tented structures are a part of a 46,000 square
foot area aptly named, The Forum. The Forum can
seat up to 5,000 and can be engineered to develop
smaller venues, hide the back of the house
production team, as well as provide protection from
any inclement weather. Fine dining and impeccable
table decor can combine with hi-tech stage
production lighting and special effects to morph
each area into a fantasy event.
Situated among fountains, vintage gazebos, and over
700 rose varietals, romantics at heart have been
drawn to Empire’s Rose Garden. A lavish lawn area
fit for Victorian royalty, the Rose Garden is the
perfect locale for an auspicious occasion. Empire
staff can arrange for horse and carriage livery
service for unforgettable arrivals to equal
sophisticated garden and glamorous Hollywood era
parties. Exchanging vows al fresco, dancing under the
stars and relaxing fireside are just a few of the
amenities to delight revelers.
For those seeking a smaller, more rustic
environment, Empire’s Hacienda Del Toro is the
private equestrian enclave they are looking for. A
circular entry welcomes guests into this inviting
spot surrounded by palm trees that can be up-lit
during the evening. A lovely fountain is adjacent to
the grassy floor flanked by a large tented area. The
openness of the space can encourage a traditional
meeting as well as inspire an avant garde soiree
invented, specifically, to tickle one’s fancy.
Want a carnival atmosphere? A ferris wheel and
fireworks? Cigar and chocolate pavilions, celebrity
chefs, camel rides…a helicopter valet? Empire Polo
Club has the capacity to deliver distinctive activities
for guests where Exhibition Polo Matches or Golf
Cart Polo games during rehearsals or receptions are
not unheard of. It’s all been done at Empire, where
all ideas are entertained, wondrous themes are
explored and careful consideration is given to every
detail. Nolasco says, “It’s your day to shine. Let your
imagination soar and we will help you build
something spectacular. We want to make your
wedding dreams come true.”

Indian Palms Country Club & Resort
The centerpiece of the resort facility is the 27-hole
championship golf course, which has recently
undergone a three-phase revitalization process
designed to modernize the facility while preserving
the historic integrity of the property. Indian Palms'
three nine-hole courses – the Mountain, Royal, and
Indian nines – are designed to provide tests of
accuracy rather than strength and distance.
In addition, each nine offers a slightly diverse style of
golf challenge, taking full advantage of its majestic
surroundings, offering the perfect challenge to ignite
the interest of any caliber of golfer. Throughout
your round, you will come across strategically
placed bunkers and water comes into play on 15 of
the 27 holes.
In contrast to most desert courses, hundreds of
mature trees line each fairway. Our signature hole is

Salton Sea State Recreation Area
One of the world's largest inland seas and lowest
spots on earth at 227 feet below sea level, Salton
Sea was re-created in 1905 when high spring
flooding on the Colorado River crashed the canal
gates leading into the developing Imperial Valley.
For the next 18 months the entire volume of the
Colorado River rushed downward into the Salton
Trough. By the time engineers were finally able to
stop the breaching water in 1907, the Salton Sea
had been born at 45 miles long and 20 miles wide –
equaling about 130 miles of shoreline. The Salton
Sea State Recreation Area covers 14 miles of the
northeastern shore and has long been a popular site
for campers, boaters and anglers. Varner Harbor
within the SRA provides easy access to the sea for
boating and water skiing. Kayakers, campers,
birdwatchers, photographers and hikers can
enjoy the site's many recreation opportunities.

Indio Centers on Art
A building that was the printing facility for a
newspaper, located in downtown Indio has been
cleaned, changed and given a new vibrant energy in
the form of the Coachella Valley Art Center. What
were offices, storage areas and a dark room, are
now exhibit and performance spaces, classrooms,
and studios for painting, photography and graphic
design. Former printing bays, distribution and
equipment storage areas have been transformed
into workshop and studio areas for wood, metal,
welding, glass blowing and kiln-fused glass studios.
The Coachella Valley Art Center (CVAC) hosts
exhibitions, studios, art classes, community meetings,
small performances and is a haven for any individual
to escape from their current world and take respite
with creative people and objects in a 17,000 squarefoot space filled with positive energy. CVAC classes
represent visual art disciplines from traditional to
contemporary, using art making tools from brushes
to hand built art objects. CVAC is home to twelve
resident artists working in glass, wood, metal,
painting, photography, found objects, graphic design,
and drawing. Printmaking is soon to be an element
of the CVAC creative menu.
Bill Schinsky
CVAC is dedicated to community outreach and
collaboration. For the past three years, CVAC has
hosted the annual “May Is Mental Health
Celebration” exhibition and luncheon. CVAC staff
accepts and installs works by clients of the Riverside
County Mental Health Department for a three week
exhibition period. Collaborating with Indio’s
S.C.R.A.P. Gallery, CVAC hosted this past Summer’s
creative program, “ArtVentures” designed for
students aged 6 to 12 and sponsored by the City of
Indio. In November 2015, CVAC will work in tandem
with the Indio Performing Arts Center to present,
“The Telling Project,” a national program out of
Austin Texas. “The Telling Project” records and
transcribes personal stories told by veterans or their
family members describing the effects of war. Those
interviewed then become the “actor” on stage.
It is the goal of the Coachella Valley Art Center to
provide cultural experiences from simple to
complex. CVAC strives to offer artists, art works,
experiences and cultural opportunities not found in
the Coachella Valley. As a non-profit organization,
CVAC looks to the community for continuing
support. The facility is located at 45140 Towne
Street in Indio. For more information on the center

Indio is host to a growing art scene that supports

talents in the unique forum of street chalk art.
Classes and galleries throughout Indio are open to

A Taste of Old Indio
Elaine Holmes
Deli on Miles captures the essence of Indio dining.
The aromas of fresh brewed coffee, bacon
sizzling on the grill and fresh baked goods is
what greets you every morning at Deli on Miles.
The inspiration for our restaurant came from a
traditional Italian Delicatessen that my family
owned 3o years ago. High quality mouthwatering
food and a warm welcoming store filled with
homemade salads, cold cuts and desserts became
our cornerstone. The Deli on Miles continues this
tradition with fresh homemade breakfasts, hot
specialty sandwiches like our turkey melt and
meatball & sausage subs, cold deli sandwiches,
salads, and our signature Kobe beef burgers.
Best of all, it’s a place to meet friends, grab a
cup of gourmet coffee and sit and chat with
the locals.
28
Deli on Miles is the newest addition to the
restaurants in Indio, but there is much more to be
found here. Our restaurants come from various
regions and specialize in an eclectic and delightful
variety of cuisine. The restaurant scene is unique to
any other city because it is home to many
family-owned restaurants serving outstanding food
from family recipes. That’s what sets dining in Indio
apart from many of the contemporary restaurants
to the west – stop in to any restaurant and you will
find locals and visitors enjoying a meal in warm and
welcoming atmosphere. Some of our eateries have
been serving generations of customers for over 50
years. In Indio you are all friends and family, and we
love to share our family eating traditions with you.
There’s a feast waiting for you in Indio!

A Fantasy Oasis in Indio
At Fantasy Springs Resort Casino there is
something for everyone. The resort casino located
north of I-10 is an escape for snowbirds, a quick
jaunt from Los Angeles and daily pastime to
neighboring locals who find themselves sitting at
their favorite machine after a long days work. There
is an abundance of activities for all ages and there’s
always excitement when spending time at this true
oasis of the desert.
“There’s definitely a loud hum in Palm Springs about
all the entertainment, dining and casino options we
have here at Fantasy Springs Resort Casino,” says
Paul Ryan, General Manager of the resort casino.
“We’re offering entertainment value no one else
has right now.” The Special Events Center at Fantasy
Springs is home to some of the biggest names in
music, comedy, and Golden Boy boxing. Last year,
hit makers and icons such as Pit Bull, Reba McEntire,
Hall & Oates, Marco Antonio Solis, and George
Lopez graced the stage and 2015 will be no
different. Starting in January 2015, the 8th season
of Fantasy Springs’ Improv comedy series will bring
some of the biggest names in comedy to the
Coachella Valley. Last year, funny men Dat Phan,
Fritz Coleman, Rondell Sheridan and many others
had audiences laughing out the door.
These values extent beyond entertainment to the
beating heart of the property - the resort’s
full-service casino showcasing 2,000 of the hottest
slots, over 40 table games, off-track betting and
bingo giving guests unmatched gaming excitement as
well as exclusive offers through the casino’s rewards
program, Fantasy Rewards. Guests are getting more
incentives and receive a better overall experience
on the casino floor as a member of Fantasy
Rewards. “A majority of the people we host as
guests here come back to the property at some
point during their time in the Coachella Valley. We
believe they come back in large part because of the
outstanding and friendly service they receive,” says
Ryan. Fantasy Springs Resort Casino guests have
more choices for entertainment than at other
resorts around the area with options such as golf at
Eagle Falls Golf Course, seven restaurants including
fine and casual dining, live music, dancing, Fantasy
Lanes bowling and more.

Springs Resort Casino which brings thousands of
tribal and non-tribal people together for a
celebration of culture and customs.Visitors have an
opportunity to taste Native American foods and
shop among vendors for Native American art.
Powwow highlights include the Bird Singers and the
Grand Entry. The Indio Powwow is a rich part of
the Cabazon Band of Mission Indian’s heritage and
they welcome everyone to share in this special
yearly tradition.
The resort’s Rock Yard, which runs from April to
October, serves up tribute bands, bringing fans to
their feet to the best of Pink Floyd, The Beatles, Jimi
Hendrix, Journey, and other timeless acts. The Rock
Yard is the musical brain child of Fantasy Springs
General Manager Paul Ryan, a musician and rock and
roll connoisseur. He took the resort to the next
level, etching an upscale, yet edgy brand into the
property. He sought to inject the resort with the
aura of “cool.” He succeeded in building and
establishing “The Rock Yard” outdoor concert venue
shortly after the resort’s major expansion in 2006.
Warm summer nights in Indio provide the perfect
ambience for these free, outdoor concerts. You can
still see exciting, LIVE entertainment by heading to
LIT Ultra Lounge every Thursday through Saturday
even when Rock Yard closes for the season. LIT
hosts cover bands that rock out all year long and
admission is always free.

Profile
Nachhattar
Singh
Chandi
44
A tribute
to the
men
and
women
driving
Indio
into
the
future…
Mr. Nachhattar Singh Chandi was born, raised and educated in
India. Growing up, he received an extensive private education
while working alongside his father in a family operated business.
In 1991 he made the decision to move from India and make
California his permanent residence. Shortly after moving to
Coachella in 1991 he met his wife, Susana. They now have four
children. After coming to the United States, he accepted a
position to manage “White’s Black Gold Gasoline” in
Coachella. In 1995, after serving a short apprenticeship, he
purchased the station he was managing. He was able to increase
sales tenfold within months and finished its transformation to
the current ARCO AM/PM on Harrison Street in Coachella in
1998. He continued to manage this operation and now employs
more than 16 full-time employees at this one site. The ARCO
AM/PM in Coachella has set Sales Records within BP/ARCO
every year since its first year in operation. It is currently ranked
the #5 BP/ARCO AM/PM in the Nation with revenues in
excess of $16 million.
Success Leads to Massive Indio Development
Mr. Chandi has recently completed two projects in the city of
Indio. The projects, Indio Northgate and Jefferson Petroleum,
consist of two new ARCO AM/PM stations and car washes.
Northgate itself is an investment of over $50 million that will
encompass 363,000 square feet of mixed-use retail. The
project, situated near the I-10 freeway, promises to change
the landscape of the city of Indio and will be the largest
development for Chandi Group USA, Inc. thus far.
Future projects include a multi-unit development agreement
with Del Taco. “My company is chiefly a labor of love” says Mr.
Chandi. “The twenty years that I have been working in the gas
station/fast-food industry have been a constant learning
experience. Our experience with the Del Taco brand has been
nothing short of successful from the beginning. They have
grown tremendously in the past 50 years and yet they’ve
managed to remain loyal to their promise of fresh fare at
unbeatable prices. This is the recipe for success.”
The Future of the Northgate Development
The Chandi Group USA, Inc. is planning a 120-room hotel at its
$200 million Northgate Crossing, an 80-acre mixed-use
walkable community development utilizing “smart growth”
concepts. Mr. Chandi said he envisions the commercial tenant
mix to include small and medium sized retail shops, a grocery
store, casual dining and quick service restaurants, a day care
center, fitness/health center, surgical center with medical
offices, and a nationally recognized full-service hotel with a
conference center. The development also will feature a mix of
styles of multi- and single-family housing with interconnected
landscaped walkway promenades to instill a sense of
community and enjoyment for local residents, visitors, workers
and shoppers. Phase I included an ARCO AM/PM and Express
Carwash, which opened last fall.

Indio Ranked Among Best Places to Live
Indio was the fifth fastest growing city in the state of
California in 2013, little wonder when you consider
all it offers. A warm winter makes it a playground
for the rich and famous during our peak season, and
our affordable cost of living welcomes families and a
growing working class to make it home. Indio was
recently ranked in the top 20 “Best Cities for
Young Families in California” by a national survey
group. The City of Indio ranked 17th and was the
only Coachella Valley city on the list. The quality of
its schools, strength of its economy, and value in its
real estate are just a few of the reasons Indio is a
great place to live.

FEATURED ARTIST
DELIA
BRADFORD
SUE
KROLL
Delia Bradford grew up in Big Sur, California the daughter of
parents both making their living as professional artists. Delia
would paint outdoors beside her mother. She does not sketch
before painting. Rather, she starts right in with paint on canvas,
blocking in the massive shapes first and then adding darks and
lights to make the details appear. Delia prefers to paint directly
in nature when she has the opportunity. Her work has been
exhibited in many galleries throughout Northern California.
In collaboration with her husband Rick, a master giclée printer,
they produce affordable giclées on canvas of her work. By
using the finest pigmented inks along with Fredrix archival
print canvas, the quality and durability of her reproductions
are second to none. Anyone who views her Impressionist
Landscape and Floral paintings realizes her passion and vitality
for life and for nature. Although her paintings are vibrant and
colorful, they exude a peacefulness and tranquility that calms
the soul.
I have been in love with art all of my life. From the gorgeous
refrigerator crayon drawings as a little schoolgirl to my new
style, scratchboard, I cannot look at something without
wondering how it would look as art. My creations over the
years have been primarily acrylics, but recently I have turned
to scratchboard as it offers the promise of detail that I had
tried but failed to achieve with paints. From my first use of
finger paints and crayons to create kindergarten masterpieces,
I have been in love with painting and creating. Unafraid to try
new styles and techniques, I strive to evolve as an artist
whether it is my acrylic paintings or my newest passion,
Scratch Board Art. When I am not enjoying the rural life with
my husband and my cats, you will find me in my art studio
totally immersed in the creative process.

FEATURED ARTIST
RICHARD
CURTNER
SILVIO
SILVESTRI
Richard’s artwork writes epic poetry within the visual. For the
past 15 years, California artist Curtner has created unique
artwork for thousands of clients across the country, blending
his artistic talents with his passion for the written word. His
word collages are created by combining hundreds of cutouts of
written text all pertaining to a particular theme. He scours
through hundreds of highest quality magazines searching for
colors, words, and phrases. Every detail in the collage is an
individual cut out. Nothing is painted on or manipulated with a
computer. Everything is cut out by hand with an X-Acto knife,
glued together carefully, and then varnished. The end result is a
distinctive form of artwork in which you can see something
different every time you look at it. His works are a “green” art.
All the materials come from donated magazines. “People would
rather donate the magazines to me than have them go to a
land fill. It gives the magazines a second life,” Curtner explains.
He is motivated by a variety of themes. Lately he has been
concentrating on cityscapes and figurative pieces. All of his
figures in the artwork are faceless. This allows for a broader
interpretation. People can put themselves in the pieces, or
people they know. It allows for a greater connection between
the viewer and the artwork. Richard Curtner is a resident of
Coachella Valley. He exhibits full time throughout the United
States. His unique word collages are displayed in museums,
galleries (both online and off). They are in publication in
international and domestic art magazines, books, and other
media. The artist’s award-winning creations are prized
worldwide by both private and public collectors.
Silvio Silverstri is a plein air artist in the Southern California
area who paints on location throughout United States and
Europe. Silvio comes from a long linage of artists including his
father, uncle and grandfather – all in the arts or allied fields.
His grandfather was a sculptor and his father an architect. His
uncle manufactured mannequins and fine art statues. His
mother presented him with a paint-by-numbers hobby set. As a
teenager, he painted apartment buildings and houses to pay his
way through college. He minored in art, taking up sculpting and
watercolor. Silvio was a psychotherapist for thirty years, while
also painting various subject matter including coastals, deserts
and California foothills. Seeking a stronger statement and more
involvement in art, he began oil painting in the late 1980s. Self
taught until then, frustration with limited skills motivated him
to seek outside instruction and he studied with Kenn Backhaus,
Ron Rencher, George Strickland, Jove Wang, TM Nicholas, and
Robert Sandidge. He began winning awards for his art in the
early 1990’s and began entering plein air events in 2001 where
he won an honorary mention at the Carmel Art Festival and
numerous awards over the past thirteen years. He also began
teaching other artists in order to share his gifts and skills.
He spent time in the desert as a child and seeks to render

OLUF
NIELSEN
OLUF NIELSEN is coming down from Seattle to show his
award winning abstract oils on canvas at the Southwest Arts
Festival Indio 2015. His national schedule of top art festivals
and his 7 portfolios of paintings can be found at
olufnielsen.com. Oluf would become bored if he always painted
in just one style like many artists do. He keeps it fun by moving
forward, keeping his art fresh, cerebral, and creative. Over the
past 30 years, his work has been collected coast to coast by
hundreds of individuals and many corporations such as Apple,
Boeing, AT&T, and IBM. Oluf loves coming to the Palm Desert
because he can ski Mammoth Mountain on the way down. But
besides his quiver of skis he will be bringing his new ‘Flow’
style paintings. These landscapes, escapes, and abstracts are
frenetically painted while the entire painting is flowing with a
gravity assist. This forms fractal detail, beyond what the eye can
see. At first, every second counts as Oluf scrambles to grab
palette knives, brushes, and more liquid paint. Eventually, the
painting slows to the point that he sits back, pours a glass of
whiskey and watches the fractal forms change as the paint
slowly quits moving. When dry, the work is varnished. Also
pictured are his textural oils that are painted with palette
knives and transparent and opaque Cadmium oil paints from
Holland. These paintings take months to dry in Seattle but
would dry quicker, no doubt, in the desert. The lush color
blends are worth the wait. Come to the festival or go online to
see his newest works.

SARAH
ANDERSON
Sarah’s education is in design and fine art. After working in
other mediums for years, she studied jewelry construction and
design, finding inspiration from natural stones and unusual
metals. She has a passion for found objects and searches for
bits and pieces that will work into her designs to create a new
dimension with each piece. Her creations are wearable works
of art that incorporate many unusual components found in her
travels both near and abroad. Many pieces are comprised of
antique and ancient objects that contribute to the originality
of the work. She personally designs each piece and has a wide
range of necklaces, bracelets, earrings and wire-wrapped rings.
The uniqueness in the design is paramount to the finished
product making each piece a one-of-a-kind creation.

GUNN
TRIGERE
Gunn started off his life as an artist making jewelry - sterling
silver, hand wrought, one of a kind. Initially she would
purchase the stones that she would incorporate into her
designs but later she got the urge to create his own cabochons
thus being able to control the shape and the color myself.
Glass was the answer to her desire. Hence she bought a kiln,
glass and all the necessary tools to start on his new venture.
Now, a few years later she has taken that idea a few steps
further and created what she calls “wall jewelry,” an extension
of his glass cabochons, the same but bigger. Big enough to hang
on a wall or rest on a stand or an easel. She approaches each
design as if it were a painting on canvas, overlapping colors to
achieve a multitude of hues, shapes and patterns. This imbues
her work with the subtlety and movement of watercolor,
while retaining the richness and depth that is only possible
with glass. However her canvas is glass and the pigment is also
glass. In order to make the image permanent it needs to be
fired to 1,500 degrees F which usually takes about 20 hours.
Often a piece will require two firings, sometimes even three.
Prices $145 - $875

DOUG
PARENT
Doug was born in Seattle, Washington and has lived in various
places in the western United States. Currently he resides in
Port Angeles, Washington on the Straits of Juan Defuca,
couched at the foot of the Olympic Mountains on the Olympic
Peninsula. Surrounded by the raw beauty of this area he is
inspired as he pursues his Art path. He has been drawing and
painting since he was a small boy, always in wonder of the
world around him. He found art to be a language he could
speak. He formally studied Fine Art in Southern California:
drawing, painting, and sculpture. Painting called the loudest to
him to pursue and so he has. He paints with acrylics on canvas
and panels, pursuing a variety of subject matter for his work.
He is inspired by water and landscapes and the figurative in his
compositions, always leaving the door open for the unknown.
Doug believes art is a vital life force that is to be pursued and a
gift to be shared, for all people to see and be moved. “Live life
like there is no tomorrow!”

BOGUCKI
We are artists/designers and our goal is to make art designing
functional objects. Last ten years we have been dedicated to
create a line of handbags made of stainless steel mesh. It is the
most beautiful material, highly industrial and rarely seen, usually
hidden in filtering systems. We are very happy to bring it out fo
all to see. In order to achieve different coloration and effects,
we use several grades of stainless mesh, oxidize it with fire, use
mulit-layering, 23 karat gold leaf, copper, bronze and brass
mesh, natural feathers, leaves, etc. Since nobody makes anything
of it, we developed our own techniques and methods. It took
us a couple years before we started to feel comfortable about
this very demanding material and the longer we worked with it,
the more we discovered new properties, applications and ways
to achieve unexpected effects. We are still fascinated by this
material after all these years no less than in the first days of
our adventure. We call our line The Opera Collection. It
consists of dozens of models named after famous operas. All
work from design concept to the finishing touches is done in
our Los Angeles workshop.

ELLIOTT
NEWTON
A life changing experience at the age of 53 connected Elliott
Newton to his creative side. A multi-talented artist whose
wildly inventive imagination has had a strong impression in the
art of pottery. His commercial background and inner artistic
abilities have not only awarded him as distinguished artist in La
Quinta, California but claimed him the title "Potter of La
Quinta." His enormous versatility and incredible originality are
now being utilized to greater expand his works of Fine Art
with a strong presence in local shows and galleries. After
studying pottery at College of the Desert for five years, he was
drawn to the magic created when the kiln reveals the alchemy
of the high-fire slow-cooling crystalline glaze process. Mineral
color glazes applied to Asian and early Roman style forms
express his own creative vision. Making pottery is a quiet,
healing and inspiring experience reflected in each of his
individual pieces of art. He wants his art to move people in
such a way that they are pushed into a creative output
themselves. This is why he also teaches pottery workshops for
students during the summer months. Elliott professes,"I want
my art to be prolific. I want it to scream with outer beauty, but
also to whisper softly - gently calling them in to an inner peace.
I love the product of my craft, its place in the world, and in
people's lives." His studio is in his home he shares with his
wife Tracey of 15 years located at 54360 Avenida Ramirez in
La Quinta, CA.
