Annual
Report
Paul J.
Taubman
Dear Friends,
Twenty-eight years ago, New York Cares was founded on the belief that teams of
caring New Yorkers can make a major difference in the lives of New York’s most
vulnerable citizens.
This past year, thanks to the continued power of teams, New York Cares helped
more struggling New Yorkers than ever before by mobilizing more than 62,000 volunteers.
Working side by side, in teams of three to 50, these generous individuals helped
in so many ways to enrich the lives of their neighbors in need. Their efforts included…
•cleaning, greening, and revitalizing over 140 parks and schools
•bringing much needed conversation and activities to nearly 20,000 seniors
•spending over 22,000 hours reinforcing critical reading and math skills to
elementary school students
•devoting 25,000+ hours of SAT tutoring time to 1,000 juniors from
underserved public high schools
•serving more than 325,000 meals to the hungry
Gary
Bagley
While the numbers are impressive, they pale in comparison to the personal
impact that volunteering with New York Cares has on the lives of all we
touch. In this Annual Report, we invite you to read about some of last year’s
accomplishments and hear the stories and testimonials of those who have
benefited immeasurably from the selfless act of volunteering.
Finally, we’d like to thank you, our friends and partners, for your continued
support of New York Cares, which enables our teams of volunteers to carry out this
important work without fail, 365 days a year.
With ongoing appreciation and best wishes,
Paul J. Taubman Board President
Gary Bagley
Executive Director
Every month, New York Cares manages more than 1,600 volunteer projects at
schools, social service agencies, and other nonprofits throughout the city. Every
one of those projects consists of caring New Yorkers who’ve come together to
transform New York City by leveraging the exponential power of teamwork.
“Working with people towards a common goal with New Yorkers from
all walks of life, who live anywhere from Staten Island to the Bronx,
who are all committed to making New York City a better place – that is
why I became a New York Cares volunteer.”
– Rafael, Team Leader
A Commitment to Our Community Partners
New York Cares serves as a strategic partner to schools and fellow nonprofits by developing and
managing ongoing volunteer-based programs that build capacity and help them achieve their missions.
Our commitment to providing volunteers at no cost to our Community Partners on a daily, weekly or
monthly basis is why hundreds of nonprofits rely so heavily on New York Cares to tackle the city’s most
pressing issues:

Every Team Needs a Leader
No program is possible without the commitment of our Team Leaders, an extraordinary group of
volunteers, who represent New York Cares in the community and guarantee the continued success of
our programs.
Last year, we interviewed and trained 620 new Team Leaders. In addition to supervising the efforts of
their fellow volunteers, they ensure that projects run smoothly and that the objectives of each activity
are met. Furthermore, as the primary source for feedback on a given program, they play a pivotal role in
continuously improving the New York Cares volunteer experience.
In March 2014, we hosted our ninth annual Leadership Conference. This full day of workshops and
speakers, held at the NYU Kimmel Center, was dedicated to the professional development of our Team
Leaders and made possible by the continued generosity of the Robert G. and Ellen S. Gutenstein
Family Foundation.

Competency at the
annual Leadership
Conference.
“While helping out at the Xavier Mission food
pantry recently, I ran into two of our former
participants from the Nutrition Education session
last summer. One of them, Rose, had lost 20
pounds and the other, Maria, had lost 15 pounds.
At the pantry, they both chose whole wheat pasta
instead of white pasta and asked for carrots and
cabbage in the fresh vegetable section. Maria
explained to me that her mother’s type 2 diabetes
had been very well-managed by the new foods
Maria was making her. Her mother’s blood sugar
and A1C levels dropped so low that her doctors
were willing to take her off some of her oral
medications if she kept it up. In addition, Maria
proudly reported that she no longer drinks soda
on a daily basis and always looks for whole grain
products on the ingredient section of nutrition
labels while grocery shopping.
Rose said she has been exercising almost every
day and her cholesterol levels had dropped as well.
I was ecstatic to see these wonderful women
doing so well and both so happy to be healthy.”
– Alessandra, Team Leader
New Mobile Technology for Our Teams
Last year, New York Cares launched a mobile-responsive version of our website, providing a much easier
way for volunteers to search and sign up for projects on their smartphones and tablets. We also added a
suite of new tools to improve the ability of Team Leaders to manage their projects and volunteers.
The re-designed site was developed in response to the proliferation of mobile devices and changing
needs of our volunteers–needs that were highlighted in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy, when mobile
devices were the only way many New Yorkers could access the Internet due to widespread power outages.
Improving our website’s usability on mobile devices has also increased access to New York Cares
programming in communities where smartphones are often an affordable replacement for desktop
computers or home Internet service. The mobile-responsive update to our site allows all New Yorkers,
wherever they are, to sign up to volunteer and make a positive difference on important issues.

Mobile Sign-Ups
The number of pageviews to our website using a
mobile device has increased by 400% since 2011.
The number of monthly volunteer sign-ups via
mobile devices has increased, on average, by 66%
since the debut of the mobile-responsive site.

Progress in Our Focus Neighborhoods
Launched two years ago, the Focus Neighborhood
Initiative is a concerted effort by New York
Cares to build a bigger local volunteer base and
expand our programs in neighborhoods where
the supply of volunteers has struggled to meet

In 2014, we made great strides toward growing
our presence in six key neighborhoods,
including three areas devastated by Hurricane
Sandy. By increasing the number of
volunteer trainings in these
neighborhoods (from 104 to 277) and
working closely with community
leaders, we now offer more services
South Bronx
to these areas and recruit more
local volunteers vested in the
long-term welfare of
their neighborhoods.

Corporate Team-Building Through Volunteerism
New York Cares works hand-in-hand with hundreds
of New York City’s most well-known and civicminded companies to create and manage highly
successful employee volunteer programs. In 2014,
820 companies demonstrated their commitment to
making New York City an even better place to live and
work by participating in the New York Cares Coat Drive
and the Winter Wishes program and by deploying
their employees across the city in a wide variety of
service projects.
OMERS
The New York office of this Canadianbased pension fund has achieved 100%
participation in its fundraising and volunteer
efforts for New York Cares.
In 2014, OMERS sent two teams to PS 677 K
in East New York, which serves over 500
elementary school students. One team of
volunteers read a book about bridges with
40 first graders and then helped them build
their own, using popsicle sticks, straws, and
glue. This exercise involved a range of math
and science skills – all reinforced by the
individual attention the students received
from OMERS employees.
A second OMERS team revitalized the school
by painting murals and organizing storage
spaces. This important work made the
space more inviting to the students, staff,
and community members, and allowed the
teachers to better use their limited resources.
Furthering their commitment to volunteerism,
OMERS also raised over $300,000 for the 2014
New York Cares Winter Benefit.
“One woman actually went
straight from our session to a
job interview she had that day.
As she left, everyone stood
up and cheered her on as she
walked out the door. It was a
powerful moment.”
– L’Oréal volunteer on a job

reentering the workforce
L’Oréal
For nine years, L’Oréal USA, the largest subsidiary of the world’s leading beauty company, has called upon
New York Cares to collaborate on a wide variety of corporate service opportunities. Last year, during
L’Oréal USA’s annual Volunteer Day, 600 of the company’s employees in NYC donated their time and
talents to help fellow New Yorkers in need. Their efforts included hosting a Young Authors Workshop, a
Socializing with Seniors Manicure Party, and mural painting in public schools and community centers.
Sharing Our Volunteer Management Expertise
Mobilizing 62,000 volunteers a year requires a considerable amount of volunteer management expertise.
In 2014, we took our 28 years of experience and packaged it into our Volunteer Impact Program (VIP),
a comprehensive training program aimed at empowering local nonprofits to successfully scale their
organizations by leveraging the power of volunteers.
This eight-week training includes beginner and advanced tracks geared specifically to organizations that
want to build the foundation of a good volunteer management program and learn proven strategies to
recruit, manage, and retain volunteers. VIP is unique in terms of the breadth and depth of the content it
provides on volunteer management and has garnered underwriting support from NYC Service and
The Staten Island Foundation.
In a separate initiative also designed to share volunteer management expertise, New York Cares
teamed up with NYC Service to develop and publish a co-branded manual called the Great Volunteer
Management System. The manual contains best practices, tips, resources, and exercises on a dozen
topics related to managing volunteers. New York Cares and NYC Service update the e-book quarterly to
include additional topics and host it on our respective websites.
“This program [VIP] opened my eyes
to what other people were doing. It
moved us along dramatically.”
– George Collins,
VIP Participant from
Monday Night Hospitality
To date, more than
60 nonprofit
organizations
have improved their
volunteer management skills
through VIP.
“The experience increased staff awareness of the importance of volunteer management.
We really got to the core of what programs the volunteers wanted, and what they could
provide the agency.”
– Rita Manton, VIP Participant from Sunnyside Community Services
Teams Fueling Our Annual Events
New York Cares Day Spring
Sponsored by HSBC for the past eight years, this is the largest spring cleaning event in the city. More
than 228 teams, comprised of 3,200 volunteers in 68 public parks and gardens, revitalized shorelines,
restored garden beds, planted flowers and trees, painted benches, and removed invasive species.
Volunteers prep

opportunities to

food and learn
about nutrition.
New York Cares Day Fall
More than 3,700 volunteers in 247 teams spruced
up 70 New York City public schools throughout the
five boroughs. Volunteers spent the day creating
murals, painting classrooms, organizing libraries,
and working with the school community to prepare
for the school year ahead.
Last year, we ran
revitalization and
education projects
in
247 public schools
across the city.
Winter Wishes
It was another record-breaking year for Winter Wishes as
generous volunteers answered more than 42,000 letters from
children, teens, and seniors requesting gifts for themselves or
loved ones. For many letter writers, a gift through Winter Wishes
is the only holiday gift they receive. This event was generously
sponsored for the fourth year by Julie Turaj and Robert Pohly.
Coat Drive
In 2014, New Yorkers donated more than 75,000 coats by
dropping them off at 300 public collection sites or forming
collection teams with co-workers, alumni groups, churches,
and other associations.
The Coat Drive is a New York City tradition, providing warmth
for New Yorkers in need for the past 26 years. New York
Cares has adapted to the many changes those 26 years have
brought, most recently by leveraging mobile technology and
enabling donations to be made directly from the home
or workplace.
“This isn’t just a coat for me – it’s
a blanket, a pillow, a backpack,
a shield.”
