Q&A with a new CHW Sustainer:

You have been a generous
supporter over the years, what
made you decide to become
a Sustainer this year? As a life
member since 1967, I felt it was
necessary to lend my support to
this fund.
How did it make you feel to join the growing list
of CHW Sustainers? It felt very good. I don’t go to
chapter meetings since raising my four children and
a Master’s degree kept me busy for many years but I
was happy to be able to do this.
Have you visited our projects in Israel? We’ve had
the opportunity to visit Hadassah Hospital. I hope
to be able to visit other projects in the future.

have gained momentum, bolstered by a wonderful newspaper

have not yet reached this year’s goal of $175,000.

Fundraising Projects
Featuring over 40 artists in a variety of mediums, the evening
promises a selection of highly sought after art through both silent
and live auctions. This year’s auction will feature some internationally
renowned artists such as Jim Dine, Dale Chihuly and Hunt Slonem.
Other Canadian favorites include previous honourees Yehouda
Chaki and Norman Laliberté, plus the works of Paul Béliveau, Joshua
Jensen-Nagle, Jacques Payette, Darlene Cole, and Ingrid Harrison
to name a few. The auction will be led by professional auctioneer
Neil Horowitz. The event co-Chairs are Sarah Hutman and Lianne
Routtenberg.
Roy L. Heenan is the founding partner and Chair of Heenan Blaikie
LLP. He is a past president of the Musée d’art contemporain in
Montreal and sits on the Boards of the Montreal Museum of Fine Arts
and the Beaverbrook Art Gallery in Fredericton. He was appointed
an Officer of the Order of Canada in 1999 and has the honourary title
of “Advocatus Emeritus” conferred by the Quebec Bar.

CHW’s residential youth village schools are home to
children from dysfunctional or immigrant families. For
families whose financial needs are great, the Bar and
Bat-Mitzvah Program offers a unique opportunity to fulfil
a Jewish child’s rite of passage. The cost of providing the
Bar or Bat-Mitzvah celebration for one child is $500. YOU
can help give a child a memorable and meaningful Bar
or Bat-Mitzvah experience. Contact the CHW Montreal

President’s Message
Inspiring future generations today!
I am proud to belong to an
organization that has existed
in our country for 95 years.
Canadian Hadassah-WIZO (CHW)
is celebrating its 95th year and our
Montreal Centre has a lot to feel
proud about.
In celebration of our 95th anniversary, CHW has embarked on a
campaign to raise $300,000 in support of the Na’aleh Program at
Nahalal Youth Village to ensure that it is well-equipped to assist the
next generation of youth who have decided to make Israel their
home.
At last November’s convention in
Toronto, we welcomed our new
National slate of officers and we
were excited to hear all the positive updates from across
Canada. We were inspired to go back to our centres and
continue to work toward our common goal.
The Montreal Centre was incredibly busy over the past
12 months and we met our challenges head on. Our
chapters were all contributing in so many different ways.
I have really enjoyed the past year meeting our
members by visiting their monthly home gatherings
or at various events. I am awed by the commitment by
so many women whose steadfast dedication does not
waiver. They are always trying to find new ways to raise
funds for our projects in Israel. They reinvent themselves
and challenge themselves. It is inspirational seeing CHW
women celebrate chapter milestones together, like the
Anna Zaitchick’s 40th anniversary walk in the park.
As I begin my second year as Montreal Centre president
I look forward to seeing our centre grow and flourish. I
am thrilled to be attending the Tel Hai Bridge and Mah
Jong tournament. I am so excited about our art auction
in collaboration with the Galerie de Bellefeuille and
honouring Mr. Roy Heenan.
CHW was built upon the foundation of tzedakah and
our members keep up that tradition all year long.
Please try your best to attend the many events planned
throughout the year.
I want to take this opportunity to wish all of our
members and friends a happy and healthy new year.

THE NA’ALEH PROGRAM : CHW NAHALAL YOUTH VILLAGE
The Na’aleh students arrive in their teens, study Hebrew for one
year and then join the Israeli students in mainstream student life.
Their parents typically follow within a few years. Na’aleh students
are given a unique opportunity to participate in an educational
program between Nahalal and the Technion Institute. The
Technion’s focus on science, math and engineering gives these kids
a chance to discover what they would like to do in the future. Once
they graduate from Nahalal and complete their army service, they
can complete a one-year program at the Technion and receive their
first degree.
Founded in 1923, the Nahalal Youth Village began as an agricultural
school for Eastern European immigrant women. Today, Nahalal
Youth Village gives the Na’aleh students a wide variety of options
as new immigrants to the country, helping them to learn the
language, educational success which leads to their army service
and full integration into Israeli life. The partnership between the
Na’aleh program and the Nahalal Youth Village continues in the
school’s tradition
to foster the
future of Israeli
immigrants
making a
difference in the
lives of future
generations.

A visit to the CHW Archives
On the CHW Mission to Israel in January 2012, the group had the
chance to meet some of Na’aleh students. They ranged in age from
14-16 and were thrilled at the opportunities this move meant to
them. Anna*, a student from Georgia, knew that if she stayed in her
home country her options for education and later work would be
limited. She felt welcome and looked after by the teachers and staff
at Nahalal. In her words, “the teachers noticed and cared when I
wasn’t feeling well in my soul”.

A Treasure For My Daughter
Centre Activities
As we celebrate the 95th anniversary of Canadian Hadassah-WIZO,
we acknowledge and recognize how rich our history is. The
efforts and dedication of thousands of women over the years has
sustained CHW’s mission to fund a multitude of programs and
projects for Children, Healthcare and Women in Israel and Canada.
An Evening with Judie Oron
One key element of CHW Montreal’s past is “A Treasure For My
Daughter” – a recipe and reference book of Jewish festivals and
holidays.
Initiated in the 1940s by the members of the Ethel Epstein Ein
Chapter, its first publication was launched in 1950. Since then the
book has had 12 reprints, the last of which is now sold out.

The opening of the annual campaign of Youth
Aliyah today coincides with celebrations marking
the 20th anniversary of the founding of that
organization.
Mrs. Bernard Bloomfield, who is chairman of this
year’s campaign, pointed out that Youth Aliyah
was born “in answer to Hilter’s policy of nonAryan extermination, and of European children
caught in the maelstrom of this catastrophe.”
The name, Youth Aliyah, denotes its purpose –
Redemption of Youth, - she said, adding that the
education and well being of children has always
been the major concern of this organization.
From the beginning, the objectives of this group
have been the rescue, rehabilitation, education
and integration into the life of Israel, of Jewish
young people. “It has been the task of Youth
Aliyah to erase from the minds of children the
memories of their past suffering and to give
them the self respect and the incentive necessary
for a happy and well-adjusted life.”
This cookbook is a piece of heritage that the Montreal Centre is
determined to preserve. The charm and value of the book are
the traditional recipes and menus which will remain untouched
with some minor updates made to the forward and calendar. The
projected launch of the reprinted cookbook will be May 2013
in time for Mother’s Day. A perfect fit since the cookbook is a
conversation between a mother and a daughter.
The training schools and vocational centres have
taught these illiterate, sickly, undernourished
children how to fend for themselves whether it
is building their own houses, tilling the fields,
fishing in the sea, repairing their machinery or
running their kitchen, the educational system is
geared toward making them self-reliant.
On Tuesday, May 15 , CHW Montreal hosted
an evening at the Cote St. Luc community
centre to a 200 plus crowd. Author and
journalist Judie Oron shared the inspiration
for her book “Cry of The Giraffe”. In the
1980’s, Judie organized and directed a
group of concerned professionals that
assisted Ethiopian Jews to find their way to
Israel. She took into her family an Ethiopian
Jewish girl. Upon learning that her sister
was missing, she went alone to the north of
Judie Oron with Sonja
Ethiopia to find and release her from slavery.

The Anna Zaitchick Chapter Goes Viral. Raises $17k.
To celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Anna Zaitchick Chapter, the
members decided to try a new fundraiser – a Walk in the Park – using
online peer to peer fundraising. The members created personal
fundraising pages and sent out email messages asking friends, family
and corporate contacts to sponsor them. The results far exceeded
expectations, raising over $17,000 in support of CHW!
Congratulations to the golf committee
and the Co-Chairs, Joseph Balinsky,
Gary Hutman and Danny Kaufer for
another successful Pro-Am For Kids golf
tournament raising over $160,000 for
CHW projects and LOVE Quebec. This
year’s event sponsored by Silver Star
Mercedes Benz took place on Thursday,
July 5th at Elm Ridge Country Club. Over
180 players and professionals took part
in the largest charitable Pro-Am golf
tournament in Montreal. The perfect
weather was the ideal backdrop to a
full day of festivities including brunch,
prizes on the par 3s, cocktails, dinner
and the awarding of team prizes. An
award recognizing Myer Wenger, one
of the founding chairmen of the ProAm golf tournament, was given to Fred
and Barbara Wenger in honour and
recognition of Myer’s many years of
involvement.
To finance the reprinting of the book, we are looking to
CHW members and friends to pay tribute to their mothers,
grandmothers, aunts and others who laid the foundation of our
rich CHW history. For $100, your tribute will help ensure that “A
Treasure For My Daughter”
continues to be a part of
the CHW Montreal story –
both past and present.

Serious problems have been met and solved,
she noted. Methods have been evolved to
integrate these children into a new way of
life with emphasis on group cooperation and
coordination. Today 10,000 wards are in Youth
Aliyah villages, settlements and vocational
schools, with 400 children arriving monthly.
The main effort has now shifted from rescue to
social adjustment in the country, Mrs. Bloomfield
explained.
After several months under Youth Aliyah care,
the change in the children is dramatic, Mrs.
Bloomfield said. While they are learning a
common language, personal hygiene and so
forth, they are also imbued with a sense of
responsibility to themselves and to those in their
group.

The AZ Members began their walk with a ribbon
cutting ceremony.
The Israeli film “A Matter of Size” about a
group of overweight Israelis who learn
the fine art of sumo wrestling was so
popular that CHW and Theodor Herzl
had two special viewings of the hilarious
movie. Friends of all ages enjoyed the film
followed by a special reception from the
Theodor Herzl ladies.
