Proposed – Bring back the Charter Captain’s to the club
tournaments in a NOT FOR HIRE situation with MOMC
members or paid guest members as crew. This qualifies
them for Captain’s Open, the monthly tournament, and
the monthly side bet for the 2016 season.

NEW BUSINESS
Reminder
Please do your best in bringing in all weighable fish as soon as possible. Please keep the health of the fish
in mind. We understand how hectic tournament days are with many fish coming in. Holding a fish works
both ways. It could save them a trip in but it could also cause a trip in for a fish that is already beat in
your tank. Please use your best judgment in keeping tournament fish healthy.
Please direct all questions regarding CPR to Lynn Baumgartner, Ed Pascua, or Kurt Nowicki. They are your
chairmen this year. Kurt will supply all CPR numbers prior to the tournament on Facebook and will
announce it ASAP the morning of the tournament.
Please do your best in keeping the mouth closed in all CPR photos. Closed mouth fish will generally get
priority over open mouth fish. We understand the dynamics with waves and a jumpy fish.
Make sure all CPR photos are in before 3 pm Sunday for all tournaments. Please do your best in getting
the photo on the laptop. Most cords to phone, SD cards, and email (if WIFI is available) will work in
getting it to the laptop. Laptop photos will take priority over cell phone photos in very close instances.
We would like to start a club directory of
the businesses our club members own and
classifieds. This will be a great service to
provide answers to questions you have,
services you need, and a name you can
recognize. We will include Charters, Lure
makers, Landscapers, home builders,
electricians, boat repair, marinas, ETC. If
you would like your service listed or a
classified ad, please send your information
to Woody at [email protected]

MUCC Corner…
New Regulation Could Limit Chumming
Chumming, the practice of luring or attracting fish with bait mixes that can
include corn, rice, noodles, fish eggs, or different types of meat, has been legal
in Michigan for years. The DNR doesn’t consider chumming a threat to the fish
population, however, the practice and regulations has been discussed
multiple times by the DNR since at least the late 1990's. The Natural
Resources Commission may take action at prohibiting chumming on certain
waters as soon as their next meeting on June 9, 2016 at Jay's Sporting Goods
in Gaylord.
Please be advised, the club’s address is:
21817 Bon Heur St.
St Clair Shores, MI 48081
When Viral Hemorrhagic Septicemia virus (VHS), was identified in the Great
Lake waters 2005, there was talk of regulating chumming due to the possible
spread of VHS through eggs. The virus does not have any impact on humans,
through direct contact or via fish consumption, but it quickly spreads through
the fish population, and could easily wipe out an entire species. There are
currently 28 species of fish that are recognized as susceptible to the Great
Lakes strain of VHS including 19 sportfish. Infected fish shed the virus in their
urine and reproductive fluids, and fish eggs are known to spread some strains
of the disease.
Please email pictures and label them to be
included in yearbook (name, boat, size of
fish) [email protected]
In 2007, Fisheries Order 245 was enacted, prohibiting the use of fish eggs as
chum in Michigan waters to prevent the spread of VHS. In 2012, the strain of
VHS present in the Great Lakes was found not to be transmittable through fish
eggs, and the order was modified to allow fish eggs to be used again.

Let um Go, Let um Grow…
While chumming hasn’t caused any negative biological effects, there have
been complaints from mostly commercial fishing guides fishing heavily
chummed areas about high amounts of fish egg material and decreased catch
rates. Those who don’t use chumming are upset and think the fishing
experience has been diminished. As a result of this input and a request from
the Natural Resources Commission, the Fisheries Division has developed
addition regulatory options in regards to chumming. Earlier this month,
Fisheries Order 200.16A laid out the possible changes in regulations for
chumming with three different options.
•
leave chumming regulations as they are, and have no changes. Anglers
wouldn’t have to learn new restrictions, but the social issue will not be
addressed and could grow worse.
•
prohibit chumming with organic material in all Type 3 streams. It
would be easy to understand and reinforce, however, those who wish
to chum with organic material could move to other rivers, spreading or
increasing the perceived problem there.
•
prohibit chumming with organic material in Type 1, Type 2, Type 3, and
Type 4 streams. This regulation would also be easy to understand and
reinforce, but anglers who prefer to fish with chum would be
impacted.
However, after public testimony and further discussion among the NRC, the
NRC has called for a more "surgical" approach of just regulating certain waters
experiencing the most social conflict due to chumming. The revised order
would prohibit chumming with organic materials on the following waters:
•
Muskegon River from Croton Dam downstream to Muskegon Lake
(Muskegon and Newaygo Counties)
•
Manistee River from Tippy Dam downstream to Manistee Lake
(Manistee County)
•
Pere Marquette River mainstream from M-37 downstream to Pere
Marquette Lake (Lake and Mason Counties)
This new order has been submitted for consideration, and will be eligible for
approval by the NRC on June 9th, 2016 (see full NRC agenda here). To stay
informed on this possible action, please attend the NRC meeting on June 9th
in Gaylord or join MUCC on Facebook that afternoon to a link to our live
streaming video. If you have thoughts on this possible regulation, be sure to
provide comments to the NRC Commissioners.
Want to help stop the spread of VHS and other possible threats like invasive
species within Michigan waters? Don’t forget to remove all visible plants from
your boat and dispose of unwanted bait in the trash. Also, empty, rinse and
dry boats or other recreational equipment before transporting them to
another body of water.

2016 Opener Joe LePage Classic
What a way to start the 2016 Muskie season! The
weather was spotty with a few clouds, sun, wind, and
rain mixed in. It didn’t take long for Richard to get the
tank going. Only ten minutes into the season and the
Yellow Belly's Capt. Brad Horton had a runner! Brad
knew the fish would get bumped but a coin toss of
heads made him run it. The fish was bumped 10
minutes after the weigh in by Fishagan’s Mike Rymar.
The early Saturday fish continued to snap. Richard was
very busy for the rest of the day. We had fish after fish
running in by some great seasoned MOMC members
and some new captain's and crews. We had some long
call in CPR fish and then we had some rain!!!!
Thank you very much to Chef Noodles Catering for the
fantastic smoked BBQ they provided. I heard nothing
but good things about the food! Thank you to Dave
Clark and the Liquid Sedation crew for chairing the
opening event of 2016! THANK YOU to all board
members and MOMC members who stuck around and
helped clean up the event. “Your help is greatly
appreciated and that’s what’s great about this club!”,
President Lance Koester.
We started the awards presentation with a show of
appreciation to Tom Joysey and his crew at the Miller
Marina Gas Dock. Tom helps out a ton behind the
scene’s with every event held at his gas dock. He is an
active member of the MOMC and goes above and
beyond in the scope of his duty's. Thank you Tom!

Heart Attack: First Aid
We are in the beginning stages of organizing a certified CPR and First Aid class that is American
Heart Assoc. approved this Spring. We will keep you abreast of the time and date. This will
count for USCG captain requirements and healthcare worker requirements.
By Mayo Clinic Staff
Someone having a heart attack may experience any or all of the following:
•
Uncomfortable pressure, fullness or squeezing pain in the center of the chest
•
Discomfort or pain spreading beyond the chest to the shoulders, neck, jaw, teeth, or one or
both arms, or occasionally upper abdomen
•
Shortness of breath
•
Lightheadedness, dizziness, fainting
•
Sweating
•
Nausea
•
A heart attack generally causes chest pain for more than 15 minutes, but it can also have
no symptoms at all. Many people who experience a heart attack have warning signs hours,
days or weeks in advance.
What to do if you or someone else may be having a heart attack
•
Call 911 or your local medical emergency number. Don't ignore or attempt to tough out
the symptoms of a heart attack for more than five minutes. If you don't have access to
emergency medical services, have a neighbor or a friend drive you to the nearest hospital.
Drive yourself only as a last resort, and realize that it places you and others at risk when
you drive under these circumstances.
•
Chew and swallow an aspirin, unless you are allergic to aspirin or have been told by your
doctor never to take aspirin. But seek emergency help first, such as calling 911.
•
Take nitroglycerin, if prescribed. If you think you're having a heart attack and your doctor
has previously prescribed nitroglycerin for you, take it as directed. Do not take anyone
else's nitroglycerin, because that could put you in more danger.
•
Begin CPR if the person is unconscious. If you're with a person who might be having a
heart attack and he or she is unconscious, tell the 911 dispatcher or another emergency
medical specialist. You may be advised to begin cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR). If you
haven't received CPR training, doctors recommend skipping mouth-to-mouth rescue
breathing and performing only chest compressions (about 100 per minute). The dispatcher
can instruct you in the proper procedures until help arrives.
•
If an automated external defibrillator (AED) is available and the person is unconscious,
begin CPR while the device is retrieved and set up. Attach the device and follow
instructions that will be provided by the AED after it has evaluated the person's condition.
Rules and Regulations
Section III – Conduct of MOMC Members
• 3.9 - During any MOMC function, all members shall
conduct themselves in an appropriate SPORTSMAN
like manner, so as to bring a favorable impression on
the MOMC. Failure to do so may result in penalties
determined by the MOMC Board of Directors.
We would like to remind our members that they are
always, especially at an MOMC event, representing the
MOMC flag. We will not tolerate cheating,
unsportsmanlike behavior, intimidation, or coercion.
Sportsmanship is an aspiration or ethos that a sport or
activity will be enjoyed for its own sake, with proper
consideration for fairness, ethics, respect, and a sense of
fellowship with one's competitors.
Thank You,

IF YOU ARE A CHARTER CAPTAIN AND WOULD LIKE TO ADD SOME KNOWLEDGE PLEASE TELL LANCE OR WOODY
Tug Orr [email protected] 248-568-4310
Greetings fellow "Muskie jihadists”! I wanted to hit on a subject many of you may not be aware
of. That subject is night-riding for muskies. All of our mothers have told us at one time or
another that "nothing good happens after midnight"! Well, with apologies to mothers
everywhere, they got this one wrong! I've caught countless huge fish after dark and well past
midnight in many cases. I usually try to get out for a couple nights around the full moon phase
each month. It can be unbelievably good but you don't need to be fishing the full moon to have
a great night fishing. I rarely quit at dark and I'd like to pass on some of this knowledge,
especially to some of the new members.
First and foremost, act at your experience level. If you're not comfortable navigating around
after dark, then don't do it. Go with people who are. That's the best way to gain that
experience you need. If you're up to it, here are some helpful hints to do it successfully and
more importantly, safely. FIRST AND FOREMOST, know the water that you'll be fishing. Start
before dark so you can find weed-free water to fish. It's even more miserable cleaning weeds
after dark compared to during the day. Be aware of any obstructions such as sailboat sticks,
buoys, and dead-heads, which can be brutal on equipment. The deadheads can be really
plentiful around the Thames area in particular, so make sure you mark them in your GPS before
stumbling into them in the dark. You don't want to wrap your boards around logs etc. in the
dark, losing lures. It's not good when your bait-boxes go home in "missing man formation"!
ha-ha Get a good headlamp and spotlight. If you don't have line-counting reels, simply count
the passes on the reel to the end of the board, then set each ensuing rod 3 passes closer.
Example: outside rod 12 passes out to the board, next rod 9 passes, next one 6 passes etc. Also,
I don't vary my speed much at night. Dark baits silhouette very well after dark and are really
productive.
I hope maybe I've expanded your "fishing horizons" a little bit. If you have any questions email
me at [email protected]. Or you can call me at 248 568 4310 and if there is room on
the Tugboat, you're welcome to join us. Have a safe and fun fishing season!! Tug Orr
21st Annual Special
Olympics Muskie Derby
We had a great turnout for the 2016 Special Olympics Muskie Derby benefiting the Grosse Pointe Harper
Woods Community Chapter of the Special Olympics. The weather was great, the fishing was intense, and
the athletes stole the show. We started out with a shotgun start out of the GPYC at 8 am. The ride was
nice a easy as the 2 mph S winds made for slick travel. We had 40 boats this year and approximately 260
attendees for this special day. In the 60 yrs. of this club we have organized this event for 21 straight
years. We want to thank the DYC, DAC, LC, and our host the GPYC for all of their support to this cause.
The fishing was very good as we called in our fish for the Roy Obrien Ford Tiger Ticket giveaway. We had
all boats landing fish throughout the day. Fish were being caught even when the wind died to a halt and
the sky was high. Golden Rod fish were being added by our weigh masters Randy Carron and Dale
Hoelfeldt throughout the day. The peak of the day was from 10:20 to 10:40 am as 22 fish were called in.
We estimate that 5.9 fish were caught per boat throughout the day. With 83 call in fish registered, we
estimated our fleet caught a total of 249 Muskie throughout the day. Great job fishermen and thank you
Dale and Randy! Many of our Tiger Ticket winners donated them to our athletes and we thank you.
As we entered the banquet room at the GPYC, sun tans and smiles lead the festivities. We raffled off a
shotgun. We raffled a Grizzly Cooler with the MOMC 60th anniversary logo on the lid. Vic Cretu won the
Ameriprise Financial Coleman Roadtrip Grill and Terry Lapper won the deep fryer. Paul Bennitt won the
Steiner binoculars donated by Mike’s Marine. The prize of the day, the golden rod 55” Smart TV by Sony
was won by one of our athletes, Evan Popkie! Ameriprise Financial also awarded T-Shirts and hats to all
the athletes including a 60yr MOMC medal. Thank you to our Prime sponsors for their donations.
As we went through the awards dinner we took time to honor Tom Jeanette. Tom was one of the original
captains who helped start the event some 21 years ago for the MOMC. Tom’s wife Nancy and her
daughter and granddaughter were present to accept a 60 yr. MOMC medal in memory of Tom. She told
us how he loved the club and this event. He was mad he was too sick to fish in 2015 before he passed in
December. Thank you Jeanette Family for being our guests.
Thank you to the athletes who joined us; Evan Popkie, Dez Peoples, Ryan Sandles, Steven Kujawski, Chloe
Fox, Megan Wiley, and Laura Casey. Thank you to the Beck and Kujawski families for helping so much!
We ended the event with our big fish awards, they went at follows:
1st place Off the Hook – Capt. Chuck Dill – sponsored by Mac n Mac/Rockwell caught by Caleb! 53 ½”
2nd place Big Fish – Capt. Tom Loy – sponsored by DAC Girls Rod and Gun 51 ½”
3rd place Rockit – Capt. Paul Bennitt – sponsored by Lamako and ANB Masonry 51 ½”

Keep the Lake Clean
What can you do to keep our lake clean? As we
finish the year. Be aware of litter in the lake,
marinas, and launch sites. We know it’s never
easy cleaning up after someone else, but this is
our lake. We fish this lake and we as locals,
have to police our lake.
• Keep an extra garbage bag on your boat
• Use your nets to extract floating junk from
the lake.
• Troll to a floating balloon and get it out of the
water.
• Don’t let empty cans our wrappers site on
your deck, they will fly out eventually.
• Don’t throw snagged junk back in the water.
• Clean up your slip and the surrounding
waters.
These few tips can make a difference.
