From The Presidents Desk
by Pistol New Zealand
President Debbie Wakker
Well winter keeps trying to set in and
then we have some almost spring days.
So I hope this means that you are enjoying the ranges we
have around the country.
Lately I have been spending quite a bit of time organising
the team for the Australasians in Indonesia in August –
about when you are probably reading this magazine. To
be clear dealing with the team is straightforward – it’s all
the paperwork that is proving time consuming.
If you hope to travel through or compete in Australia in
the near future make sure you allow some time to get the
necessary paperwork in order. If you are transiting through
Australia and changing planes, even though you don’t
see your checked in baggage you need to have an export
permit to leave the country. What you are actually doing
– according to the Defence Department – is transhipping.
On this note once again firearms have hit international
headlines due to tragic events in both Europe and the
US. It is a sad reflection on society in that people feel
that they have no other option or that they are fighting
a cause, yet are able to harm others with little disregard
for them or their families. I spent time in a meeting today
discussing what my work environment would do in such
a situation – not a pleasant discussion and sad that it has
to be considered. It dismays when we hear of another
occurrence as I know it means that we have to justify our
sport and our need to have firearms. This highlights the
fact that we need to talk about our sport and share the
good side of shooting to as many as we can.
Lastly, looking at the PNZ calendar it seems that we
are gearing up for another busy time of year full of
competitions and events. So get out to the range – practice
what you need to and make the most of another club’s
hospitality. Records were challenged and broken last year
and I’m sure there are more that can be challenged.
Make the most of your sport and see you on the range.
Kind regards
Debbie
From the Australian Customs:
Firearms and related goods that brought into Australia
and have been or will be transferred from one conveyance
to another for the purposes of export to another country,
such as persons travelling to another country and are
changing flights at an Australian international airport, and
sending goods through Australia via air and sea cargo, are
transhipping for the purposes of the Act.
This involves applying for a CCID (Customs Client ID) and
a DCRN (Defence Client Registration Number) number
which you keep for life and can be used again and again.
Then applying for export permits. All of this takes time
(around 2-3 weeks) so the moral of this story is – if you
are travelling overseas for an event check thoroughly
what is required. Requirements change and it’s better to
be prepared and have all that you need. You don’t want
to get to an airport somewhere and have your firearms or
magazines or ammo confiscated.
It’s great to see more of us travelling overseas to compete
– this is the reason that our sport exists so give it a go. Not
all events require a qualification period – you can travel to
State Titles and regional events – make the most of your
sport.
And all the best to the IPSC team
representing us in Indonesia at the
Australasians 2016.
AGM
Yes, this is coming up in September.
This year it’s Auckland’s turn to host
us.
It would be great to see delegates from as many clubs as
possible – it’s a great opportunity to meet fellow shooters
and to discuss both local and worldwide issues.

We are entering a busy time of the year,
so a quick update......
Returns
The returns are well under way, thank you to the clubs
who have sent in their returns already.
AGM
By the time you read this, clubs would have received the
AGM update and delgate information. Please make sure
you send your delagates or proxies names back to me by
the 31st of August.
PNZ Website
The new PNZ website is now under construction. The new
site will have many new innovations, to help with member
security and service. When the site is ready to go live, I
will update clubs when we are ready to go live with the
new website.
Keep your articles coming through, especially club articles
on any topics including open days, or ideas you may have
that you can share with the other clubs.........

Select Committee Inquiry into Illegal
Possession of Firearms
As reported in our last newsletter COLFO was invited to
brief the Law & Order Select Committee as they prepared
their Terms of Reference. We followed this by inviting
the Committee to a morning at the range. The members
were shown a variety of firearms and got to shoot some
of them. They were also encouraged to ask questions
about all aspects of our chosen pastime. A report and
photos of the event are at http://www.colfo.org.nz/9colfo/latest-news/128-law-and-order-select-committeerange-visit-01-06-2016.html
We have since made a comprehensive written
submission to the Select Committee which can be
read
at:
https://www.parliament.nz/resource/ennz/51SCLO_EVI_00DBSCH_INQ_68642_1_A516760/
dbafb19a51f53256a9bdbceb42e9bc22727ef15d
We are now preparing to make an oral submission on
10 August 2016 to reinforce what we have already said
and also rebut some of the more outrageous claims and
proposals made by a few of the other 96 submitters.
New Zealand Deerstalkers Association
Annual Conference
Our Chairman Paul Clark represented COLFO at the
annual NZDA Conference which was hosted by the
Auckland Branch of NZDA on 16 and 17 July 2016. We
feel it is important to speak at the NZDA Conference as
a full representation of the NZDA membership attends
and they form a major part of our membership base. It is
imperative that COLFO keeps all members up to date with
our achievements in order to cement the support needed
to campaign on member’s behalf.
Going Global
Our organisation is known around the world and 20 years
of lobbying and representing New Zealand firearms users
has ensured our presence is taken seriously.
We have taken pride in our ability to meet with Ministers
of Parliament both in New Zealand and in Australia. We
strongly represent the New Zealand case to the United
Nations Programme of Action and Arms Trade Treaty
meetings; have an ongoing formal relationship with
Sporting Shooters Association of Australia; have recently
become a full member of the WFSA (the World Forum of
Shooting Activities); are participating first hand in global
information sharing and participating in workshops that
Bullshooter #242
identifies and acts on issues.
Recently while visiting Australia COLFO Chairman Paul
Clark attended the SSAA Gun Show and met with SSAA
President Geoff Jones. While there, Paul also met with
pro-firearm Australian MPs and established relationships
with them. Plans are currently underway to send Board
Members to the next WFSA meeting in America and the
SSAA Conference on Sustainable Hunting in Australia.
Meeting with NRA America
COLFO Chairman Paul Clark will soon be meeting with
Tom Mason from the NRA of USA. Tom has been the
NRA’s representative to the United Nations for 21 years.
He is also an Executive Secretariat to WFSA. They will be
discussing the impact of what is happening in the United
States and its effect on New Zealand. Paul is reminded of
a time in 1992 when the then President of the NRA Mr
Corbin visited New Zealand. He came to offer support and
solidarity with the firearms users of New Zealand prior
to the introduction of the 1992 Arms Regulations. COLFO
is looking forward to taking the opportunity of renewing
those contacts and discussing our ownership and licencing
differences.
Protecting the Interests of New Zealand
Firearm Owners for the Past 20 Years
Case Law Database
COLFO has employed Barrister Nicholas Taylor to
prepare a database of useful firearms case law. There are
approximately 100 cases Nicholas believes will be relevant
to the firearms community. Research has been conducted
around the most common case law. These examples
should be helpful to firearms owners if they need legal
precedent in any matter likely to be before the courts.
Over half the cases identified now have a commentary
adjacent to the case details outlining its relevance to NZ
firearms legal history. As soon as Mr Taylor has completed
all commentaries we will publish the information on our
COLFO website. We believe that this reference database
is a world first by a lobby group specifically focused on
firearms matters. COLFO thanks Nicholas Taylor Barrister
for his work and our membership for their financial
support.
Lead Shot Ban
We are aware of moves to extend the ban on lead shot for
water fowl for all shotgun gauges and other issues around
the use of lead ammunition. We have been advised of
Resource Consent being refused for a clay target range
because of possible lead contamination. We see the
opposition to lead ammunition as a major threat to all
forms of shooting and we will do what we can to oppose
this development.
Renewing your Firearm Licence
Check the expiry date of your licence and renew it at least
3 months in advance. Many people have been caught
out by waiting for a reminder from police and then not
getting the new licence before the old one expired. As a
consequence their shooting activities have been put on
hold until the new licence arrived.

Appeal for Funds
The members of the COLFO Board are volunteers who
give their time freely to undertake the work of lobbying
on the member’s behalf. However the more we achieve
the more our costs escalate.
We ask the firearm owners and dealers of New Zealand to
put their hands in their pockets and make a donation to
COLFO funds.
Although we represent the largest body of New Zealand
firearm owners COLFO is not the NRA of America or even
the SSAA of Australia.
COLFO is a volunteer based organisation made up of
representatives from various national shooting related
associations and a couple of independent volunteers.
COLFO is funded by contributions from its member
associations and a relatively small number of individuals
and clubs.
Through the good offices of past and present members of
the Board COLFO has built up a good working relationship
with various government agencies and politicians.
By making well researched and fact based submissions we
have gained respect and achieved NGO status. This has
enabled us to attend various international meetings as
part of NZ government delegations.
COLFO cannot make firearm laws or policy. We can only
hope to influence policy and law makers by presenting
sound and effective arguments at every opportunity of
the due process of our parliamentary system. We also
advise and encourage our members to do the same.
What you can do?
For those not familiar with the term “Winter Series” these
HMS Sanctioned Shoots were held over two weekends,
the first one in June and the second one in July.
First of all I’m going to say that the weather was
surprisingly good, ergo, we had a good “Winter Series”
with 54 matches shot, and believe it or not, we had two,
40x40 scores, also a couple of impressive Standing scores,
a 30x40 in Big Bore and respectively a 31x40 in Small Bore.
Many thanks to those people that volunteered to take the
role of Range Officer, and made the shooting go smoothly,
and also thanks to all the shooters that gave me a hand
with setting and painting the targets.
I was pleasantly surprised to see that our “Winter Series”
brought shooters not just from Far North but also from
Wellington too; I personally want to thank them for their
effort, as this shows true dedication to our sport.
Talking about our sport, I want to mention that I was
contemplating introducing a few new matches to our
discipline, this, in order to satisfy the shooting needs of a
wider range of shooters, two new matches will be shot in
Big Bore as well as one match in Small Bore, an inspiration
from “IMSSU”. Related to this, I want also to mention that
it will be discussed with our shooters at the meeting on
the 20th of August, and I hope that we will have a positive
support to it.
Many thanks for reading my lines.
I’m looking forward to see you at the range.
Regards
Octavian
• Give your support to COLFO to make our voice
stronger.
In the Black
• Go and visit your local MPs and voice your concerns
over any legislation or policy that affects you.
• Stand for a position on your local Council, Community
Boards or DHBs and become a decision maker.
What you should NOT do is sit on your butt and do nothing
expecting others to do it for you.
If we could get more support we could be
more effective – worldwide

Precision shooting, shooting historic firearms
5 shooters contested the 50 meter Muzzle
Loading rifle event at the recent N.I.
Champs in New Plymouth......
Thanks to Gavin for lending 2 of your 3 rifles. This event
adds a bit of renewed interest, the Sections that are
‘growth oriented’ are increasing the types of firearms
they use, Multigun has Pistol Carbines, CAS, Semi Autos.
At the recent Annual Gun Show in Christchurch, the
Christchurch Pistol Club had a display of Cowboy Action
Section and Muzzle Loading BP Section guns and holsters
plus all manner of other items. The public voted our display
to be the “Best” which came with a massive Trophy!
Many people left contact details for our next Induction
day. We also displayed the COLFO banner supplied by PNZ.
Next event on the calendar is the South Island BP Champs
in Nelson on the 26-28th August feel free to join us.

ACTION UPDATE
NRA Action Shooting - by Section Director Peter Hansen
Bianchi Cup Results
This is a fantastic opportunity to participate in a world
shoot in your own back yard and mix it up with world
class shooters without the major expense of travelling
overseas. Where most other shoots have limited slots
this is open to one and all and your chance to tick off that
“world shoot” on your bucket list.
All details and entry are on the WAPC web site http://
wapc2016.com
Leading the kiwi contingent at Bianchi this year was
Tiffany Piper not only winning the women’s category
but finishing top kiwi at 23rd overall. Joanne Fisher also
finishing in a credible 4th place.
FLAGLER CUP
Finishing one place behind Tiffany was dad Karl Piper in
24th spot. Rounding out the remaining places was Hisaya
Ishii at 33rd, Allan Alley at 36th, Richard Munt 63rd, Ian
Coates at 66th and Paul Loftus at 71st.
The Sunday before the start of the Bianchi
Cup.........
Competing in Metallic division was Chris Skewes finishing
8th place, and with a Master grade score pushing him up
a grade in the process. Well done Chris.
Upcoming Events
Cowley Cup in Whangarei is the next event on the calendar
on Sept 17-18 and this will be a good opportunity to get
range time and match practice for the WAPC. Entry forms
are on the PNZ website.
Nationals will be held in Hamilton over the last weekend
in October, this will be an excellent warm up match before
heading north to the World Shoot a week later.
Entries are online, details on PNZ website.
World Shoot
Teams have been announced and are as follows
by Chris Skews
in Columbia Missouri the Pioneer Gun Club hosts a really
good 1920 Action Pistol match in Bates City, Lafayette
County Kansas. Bates City is about two hours West
of Columbia on interstate 70. Bates City sounds like a
substantial place however funnily enough the population
is only 209.
This year four of us made the pilgrimage to shoot the
Flagler Cup, Karl and Tiffany Piper plus Ishii and myself.
On the way Ishii and I visited the Harley Davidson factory
and did their Steel Toe factory tour, so named because
you have to wear rubber galoshes with steel cap toes over
yourshoes. We saw lots of fabulous bikes at all stages
of construction. Ishii liked the V-Rods and I liked the Fat
Boys, ha-ha. Well worth a visit if you get the opportunity.
There were about 90 competitors so it was a busy day.
After the match directors briefing the competitors quickly
go to each of the four ranges and put their names on the
lists which determine the times of their shoots.
The trick is to guess when you will be ready to shoot each
event because if your name is called and you are not
present and ready to compete your name goes to the end
of the list.
This would be painful in the case of the Mover event
which saw the last competitor finish at 7.15 pm. With so
many shooters I am not sure how they even managed to
get everyone through by then. We have been assured that
there will be a second mover operating next year.
This year the weather was kind to us, sunny and calm.
The terrain in Kansas is very flat for miles and miles and
sometimes the wind is so strong that you sway about
which is especially problematic when shooting the Mover,
it’s like shooting while standing in a small boat.
Congratulations to all that made the teams, it was great
to have everyone that qualified make a team.
For those that are not aware, the World Action Pistol
Championship is an open competition and any individual
can enter this match. You do not need to be part of the
teams to enter.
8 www.pistolnz.org.nz
Kansas regularly experiences tornadoes but I have not yet
encountered one, touch wood. The day mostly went really
well, competition was strong, Karl finished a good 5th in
Open grade, Tiffany finished 2nd Lady, Ishii had multiple
jams but still managed to keep smiling, he’s an inspiration,
and I finished very happy at 3rd in Metallic.
A great warm up match for the Bianchi Cup, I hope to do
it all again next year.

A huge thank you goes out to all those
WAPC volunteers who attended the
Range Officer course on Sunday 10th
July at Whangarei Pistol Club – we
received an awesome number of
attendees. This course bought all
participants up to National RO level and
they will have an opportunity to put
their learnings to the test at the Cowley
Cup in September.
Great progress has been achieved over
the past couple of months with the
WAPC website offering online registration and payment, sponsors are coming
on board and also confirmation has
been received that the event will be
televised.
Entries are steadily arriving, don’t forget
that even if you aren’t selected to shoot
in a team this does not prevent you
from entering the competition as an
individual. All shooters are welcome,
you just need to be holster qualified. So
come and join us. The teams can be

Wally Cole- IPSC Regional Director
By Wally Cole. IPSC Regional Director
Once again there is very little happening
with only three Level 2 events planned
for July, August.
With this year’s “Double Tap” being cancelled due
to sound issues at Auckland it has left a hole in the
competition calendar and unfortunately no clubs have
stepped forward to host a competition. This leaves the
three major competitions later in the year.
There has been very good number attending our recent
competitions, but unless we get a club to step forward and
run some of these events we will not have competitions
to attend which would be a sad state of affairs considering
the attendances we have been getting.
The next events for you to consider are two Level two
competitions, one at Kaimai Pistol Club on the 20th
August, followed by one at Hawkes Bay Pistol club on the
28th August. These will be followed by the three major
competitions, 2016 North Island Champs in September
in Wanganui, 2016 South Island Champs in Dunedin in
October and the 2016 Nationals in Rotorua in November.
2016 Events
NI Champs, Wanganui PC, 23rd to 25th September.
SI Champs, Otago PC, 28th to 30th October.
IPSC Hangun Nats, Rotorua PC, 22nd-26th November.
2017 Events
Hawkes Bay PC Summer Challenge, (L2) 21st-22nd Jan
River City Open, Wanganui PC (L3) 17th-19th Feb
Wanganui Classic. (All Divisions) (L2) 22nd-23rd April
Grading List
With the major competitions getting closer, now is the
time to check your grades. If you believe that there is an
error on the grading list contact me on [email protected].
nz. If you do check the current grading list you will find
that many names have been removed from the advertised
list. We have removed all the names of those members
who have not shot a grading match in the last 5 years.
This keeps the list showing current active members. If you
are one of those who have not shot a grading match in the
last 5 years we still have your name on the list showing
your last grade, it will just not show on the main list.
Range Officer Seminar
By the time this issue goes to print there will have been
a Level 1 RO Seminar held in Wanganui. This seminar
had a great turnout with 21 members registered and on
completion will give us a new group of members able to
assist RO at matches around the country. It is important
that where a club is holding IPSC matches that they have
members present who hold the IPSC Level 1 qualification.

Winter is here and things are quiet on

Are you new to New Zealand
and the sport of Pistol Shooting?
I am 45 years old and moved to New Zealand in 2008
from the Philippines. My first time shooting a pistol was in
November 2014 using a .22 pistol during the Christchurch
Pistol Club induction day, only 10 rounds though!. I got
my first pistol in October 2015 and within less than a year,
I managed to get some good results in a competition.
During the 2016 River City Open Level 3 IPSC Competition,
I won second place in Production, ungraded. My score has
moved me into a B grade.
Further, at the recent North Island Speed champs in
Wanganui, I won first place in Open – ungraded, this
moved me to a B grade as well.
Being a migrant and not knowing anyone in the pistol club
was a challenge for me. Even though I knew that there
are plenty of new migrants in New Zealand, particularly
Filipinos, who are interested in pistol shooting, I was
hesitant to join the locals at a club.
In Canterbury, the sport of pistol shooting is already very
popular and growing. I am thankful I took the courage to
come along and visit the CPC club and get involved.
Being new to the sport has been challenging and there
Bullshooter #242
are plenty of things to learn but I realised I didn’t need to
master everything before I started competing.
In our club (CPC), there are actually plenty of shooters
who are very skilled but hesitant to enter a competition.
Even though I am new to this sport, I forced myself to
compete regardless. This has greatly benefited me in
gaining experience and enjoying the sport more.
And lastly, as a beginner I cannot emphasize more the
value of hard work, training and having a good attitude.
When I got my first pistol in October 2015, I also bought
a dry fire training guide, training books/DVDs and mental
training tools. I dry fire four times a week (about an hour
per session) and range practice at least twice per week.
I also train my mental game using visualisation, etc. I
believed that mental training is equally as important as
the physical training.
In addition, I have also consulted a lot of shooters about
their equipment, training regime and approach - do not
be afraid to ask! I think to learn faster, you need a good
attitude. I feel I will always be a student no matter what
achievements I have in the future - A Boiser

Service Match Shooting - by Section Director Aaron Thomason
90 shot Action match testing your accuracy skills
Over the winter months there is not much
to report.....
so I thought it was time to go over the match itself, while
many have heard of Service Pistol many don’t know
exactly what is involved.
The most basic description is a 90 shot match shot over
4 distances with time frames from 4 seconds to 165
seconds. Service Pistol has a signature series fired at
7 yards with 12 rounds fired in 15 seconds on 2 targets
from the “unsighted” or “crouch” position. Though the
experienced shooters make it look easy a newcomer
usually walks away having saved his or her club 12 patches.
You will need a pistol or revolver that can hold 6 rounds
and (it’s a good option to have a holster for your gun
even if you are not drawing from the holster during the
match) and a least one speed loader for your revolver
or two preferably 4 magazines if using an auto loader.
Magazine pouches or speed-loader holders are handy but
not necessary.
Onto the match itself, remember this match is about
hitting the target and getting points so we will be starting
at 50 yards where you will fire 24 rounds in 165 seconds
(that’s 2 minutes and 45 seconds) at 4 targets. 6 rounds
prone, 6 rounds sitting or kneeling, 6 rounds around the
Bullshooter #242
right hand side of the barricade with your right hand and
then 6 rounds around the left hand side of the barricade
with the left hand. Its here that the new shooters identify
themselves and it goes something like bam bam bam bam
bam bam reload change position bam bam bam bam bam
bam reload change position bam bam bam bam bam bam
reload change position bam bam bam bam bam bam
unload finished meanwhile the old hands are just moving
to the second or third position.
Remember Service Pistol is about hitting the target and
getting the points there are no bonus points for speed,
now score and patch after this series then move to the 25
yard line.
At 25 yards the first series fired comprises 6 rounds in
15 seconds on the right hand side of the barricade, in
the next series repeat this but with the left hand, then
combine both in the 3rd series for 12 shots in 35 seconds
6 right hand and 6 left handed….time to score and patch.
How did you go?
After scoring the first 24 rounds at 25 yards its time to
step away from the barricade and display your ability to
shoot unsupported at 25 yards, this time with a bit more
emphasis on speed, you will shoot 6 rounds, 3 on each
of 2 targets, in a total of 6 seconds. Repeat this with 6
rounds again in 6 seconds but this time 2 rounds on each
of 3 targets… lots of 10’s to be had here, we are getting
warmed up time to patch and move on down to the 10
yard line.
At the 10yard line we are at the “gimmie” stage of the
match that 10 ring is looking pretty big now, first series is 6
shots on target in 4 seconds, but this is not spray and pray
they had better all be 10’s or you’re giving the game away.
Then we are ready for the next 6 rounds, this time in 8
seconds but with a twist, 3 rounds left hand only and
3 rounds right hand only (who practiced weak hand
shooting?) then the final string at 10 yards is again 6
rounds in 4 seconds this time 3 on each of 2 targets and
that’s it for using the sights.
Now we are at the Signature Series of Service Pistol
Shooting, 7 yards, 12 rounds, 15 seconds with a reload in
the middle all from the “unsighted” or “crouch” position
(as long as the gun is below the shoulder here you are
good to go) but again you need to get your points about
110 out of 120 is where you want to be at.
So that’s it for the match, its 90 rounds in about 35 minutes
and if you want to have another run and you have the
time and the ammunition you can.
Next time I will have a look at what you need to be
competitive and give you some indications of what guns
are competitive and where you can best spend your
money for the greatest return.
Mark your competition calendar for the North Islands
held in November at New Plymouth go and give Grif and
the boys a run for their money and enjoy their yummy
food.

2016 Australian
40th Anniversary IPSC
Handgun Nationals
By Craig Clark
Lets start with WE WON the TRANS
TASMAN TROPHY. yes we did it!
Now thats out of the way I’ll start at the beginning....
21 stages 380 round count. 439 Competitors. It was good
to see so many New Zealanders make the trip over.
The Aussie Nationals was at the Southern Vales Practical
Shooting League, Long Gully Road, McLaren Vale, South
Australia This was always going to be a big match, with
this being the 40th anniversary and being Southern Vales
where the very first Australian IPSC Nationals was held.
Thank you to the RO committee and especially Arthur M
and Peter B our Range Master.
An RO at an Australian National we get well treated. We
from New Zealand were put up in houses just across the
road from Maslin Beach. We also had the use of a rental
car.
The Australians put on a very good show. Steve Brown
and his team did a fantastic job, especially Darrell the
Quarter-Master who was staying in the same house as us
Kiwis. Who after falling down the stairs still managed to
get up at Sparrows Fart to be at the Range to keep it all
running.
The Range is not far out of Adelaide, some 42 minutes
from the centre of Adelaide. (Well thats what Google
maps put it as. With Adelaide traffic it’s probably a wee
bit longer.) With ranges spread over two levels. 5 down
in what they called the hole. This is where Jim, Steve and I
were, Cyrus was up the top. Bit of favouritism I think was
going on there.
All stages had their own unique challenges. Two that stood
out for me was Stage 6. Using your feet to hold down
pedals that stand up the 3 separate Target arrays and
Stage 15 where you were seated on a Trolley using your
feet to push yourself backwards down the train tracks.
4 of us from New Zealand Cyrus, Jim, Steve and I were
lucky enough to get picked as Range Officers for this
match.
The Pre-match was on the 23rd and 24th and Main match
25th to the 27th. Easter weekend. The main event started
for us Range Officers at 5.30am with Cyrus our chauffeur
taking us the scenic root to the Range............ after that
we used my Navman!
Once at the Range, straight to our designated Ranges to
target up and get ready for the start. We had 45 minutes to
put each squad through the stage, so no messing around.
So, other than when we had lunch I didn’t get much time
to to catch up with anyone to see how they were going.
The days just flew past and before we knew it we where
off to the Presentation Dinner, lots of medals and trophies.

Did I mention that we, Steve W, Eugene, Cyrus and yours
truly (me) WON THE TRANS TASMAN TROPHY! 7 years in
the making but we did it.
Unfortunately the Aussies wouldn’t let us bring it home,
something about we wouldn’t give it back. Poor sports,
it’s not as if it’s the Rugby World Cup.

Heretaunga Level 2 IPSC Shoot
Australian Nationals Photos - by C Clark
17 souls braved the intermittent rain showers and blustery
winds to participate in the HPC invitational IPSC shoot on
Saturday, 30th July 2016. An excellent 4 stage event and a
lot of fun was had by all, with some swearing mixed in at
the Strong Hand only swinger stage.
Match Director, Jordon, said that he personally learnt the
lesson of making sure he did his stage walk-throughs, as
he remembered about a target, yet to be engaged, after
removing his magazine to show clear. Safe to say he lost a
few seconds on that stage!
The Club will be looking to host more matches like this in
the coming months - keep your eyes peeled for notification
of a September event J Moss and M Brown (Photos by M Brown)
You know the one they just don’t seem to be able manage
to get their hands on. Some of us did manage to get off
with the odd stage banner and one or two glass AKs.
Well that one is over, I have already entered for next
years in West Australia at Pine Valley Pistol Club. For those
wanting to go we need to apply for our WA visitor licences
as a group as the organisers have managed to talk the WA
police to do free Licences for group applications. if you
apply separately there is a hefty cost. Thats all Folks.
Now to get ready for The Australasians in Surabaya
Indonesia. Yes I’m a RO at that one too!

UPDATE
By ISSF Section Director Maria Jefferis
Olympic and Commonwealth Games
shooting shot at 10 to 50 meters
Hi all ISSF shooters........
thanking them for their support.
The app is all about creating a connection between New
Zealanders at home and on the field of play in Rio.
Oceania 2017
At best NZSF believe there will be an event but it could be
sometime before we get confirmation. It appears that the
event, once confirmed, will be around November 2017.
There is a need to have a criteria and ranking list to cover
this.
Websites of interest
http://www.targettalk.org/ Specifically dealing with
ISSF topics and hosted by Pilkinsguns.co
Due to timing of the event the ranking list will start
in August this year and finish at each disciplines 2017
Nationals. Both the venue and dates of this shoot will be
advised as soon as they become available.
General interest topics
Selection will be taken from the scores posted in the NZSF
Ranking List and should include:

official website
http://www.shootingaustralia.org/ Shooting Australia
http://www.pistol.org.au/ Pistol Australia
2016 ISSF General Assembly Moscow
NZ Shooting Federation President Ewan Pirie was
the official NZ representative at this meeting. From
this meeting some rule changes that some have seen
previously have been adopted effective January 2017.
Key ones are: strengthening the rule prohibiting phones
and communication devices to be used while shooting, no
side blinkers for those few who still like to use them and
a tidy up of the women’s finals which makes them much
more efficient.
Full details of the changes will be made available before
the new Rule Book is published in January 2017.
2016 Rio Olympics App
The NZ Olympic Commitee has released an Apple Store and
Google play app that connects to our athletes competing
in Rio. The free app is available for New Zealand residents
from Apple Store and Google play. A great way to keep
up with the three NZ target shooters Natalie Ryan, Chloe
Tipple and Ryan Taylor.
We do not have any Pistol Shooters attending but let’s
support our fellow Rifle and Shot Gunners!
The official NZ Olympic Team app includes athlete profiles,
medal notifications, schedules and results, daily updates
and behind the scenes content from Rio. It is a quick
method to keep up with the three Shotgun Shooters:
Natalie, Chloe and Ryan. Any support their fellow shooters
here in NZ can give them is always appreciated.
We would appreciate any support you can give us by
encouraging New Zealanders to download the app - via
passing on this email, putting in newsletters and or social
media.
Supporters can send messages to the stars and the
athletes can use their phone to scan the night sky to see
that New Zealanders are right there with them.
In return, athletes can connect with New Zealanders

Commonwealth Games Gold Coast 4-15
April 2018
There are still a lot of unknowns regarding the upcoming
Games. We continue to wait on updates from the Games
organisers. Rumors abound but they are just that until
confirmed by the NZ Olympic Committee.
The NZSF continues to work with the NZOC regarding their
requirements for team selection.
The selection process will run through the 2017 year and
will include seven NZ Matches and several Australian
competitions and a number of World Cups.
As soon as full official details are available they will be
widely distributed.
ISSF Match Guidelines
These are now available in printable form on the PNZ
website for clubs and individuals to download.
The guidelines give the sequence of fire, range commands
and malfunction procedures.
If you are running a club day these are a great guide to
doing things right and will help give confidence to fellow
club members to run these matches at the range.

Pistol, Rifle,Shotgun Matches shot to IPSC and Multigun Rules
by Dean Albiston- Section Director
HI all
Well its been a slow month this time. Winter has come in
and not a lot of shooting has been done.
When you read this our first Multigun match would have
come and gone.
Things have been shaping up for 10 of us to go and shoot
in Russia for the IPSC world rifle shoot. We are getting
teams together for standard and open now with a couple
that just want to go and shoot which is cool.
This I hope will be the start of New Zealand sending more
teams to these types of events.
Dean
Warkworth came to the party and offered to run the first
Multi gun match at their club on the 6-7 August. The plan
was to shoot 5 stages for this match with an ROs training
half day on the Saturday morning. All 3 guns were to be
used.
The new rules would have been used to get this up and
running. The divisions used were the same as the 3 Gun
Nation divisions. More details on how this event went will
be posted in the next issue of Bullshooter.
The North Islands 3 gun will be held at Hamilton on the
3-4 September. 15 stages 5 each gun as per normal. Entry
forms etc will be coming out as soon as I can get it sorted.

CAS Section news by Tuscon
End of Trail 2016
All of Team Kiwi are now home and getting
used to the cold again and saving up for
next time.
Rooster, Dusty Barrels along with Daisy Rae & Laredo Kid,
Miss Kitty, Bobby Steele, Witch Doctor, Lindis Ranger,
Nightshooter, Lightning Jack and Tuscon all made their
way to New Mexico for the World Championship of
Cowboy Action Shooting, End of Trail.
About 640 shooters would be competing for glory or fun,
or both. A few of us would shoot at other venues as warmup matches leading up to EOT. This helps in acclimatizing
to both the heat and the altitude. EOT is always exciting.
The top guns are out in force.
Some young up-coming shooters will dazzle everyone with
their speed. There are always lots of vendors selling all the
cowboy stuff we don’t see at home. And the gunsmiths
are on hand to fix that gun that has worked flawlessly for
the last four years and just decided to play up at EOT.
Or for a very special price, can fit the new beaut accessory
that will allow you to shoot your gun at 100 miles per
hour. Or if you like bling, maybe some gun engraving or
clothing accessories are more your thing.
The stages were a mix of close targets with straightforward target order, to moving rifle targets and more
challenging target set-ups. One set of pistol targets were
at 3.3 meters, but were angled such that there was zero
splatter.
Miss Kitty and Witch Doctor both shot Wild Bunch well
enough to get into WB Master Gunfighter. Miss Kitty
reckons if her pistol hadn’t jammed she would have got
through to the next round. They were both presented with
EOT Winners Buckles. Lightning Jack shot well enough to
get into the Top 16 Cowboy Action Master Gunfighter.
His first round was against Cobra Cat (EOT overall winner
2014) that he won.
For his second round he was up against Missouri Lefty
(EOT overall winner 2016) and came second by about 10th
of a second. So that was the end of shooting at EOT ‘16 for
Team Kiwi. Our team would be presented with another
three buckles during the awards ceremony.

There were big smiles for Lightning Jack, Rooster and
Lindis Ranger. Nightshooter, Bobby Steele and Witch
Doctor all won buffaloes for shooting a clean match.
Congratulations to all.

Lefty and SASS Kicker.

Territorial Governors Meeting at EOT
I attended the TG meeting at EOT.
1. One of the topics discussed was the operation of
the loading table. They would like those checking the
rifle and shotgun to make an effort to actually see the
magazine follower instead of just watching the shooter
rack the action.
2. There was also a clarification on starting position – if
the shooter starts a stage in a faulted position then the
shooter has just earned a procedural.
3. The Henry Big Boy is now legal in Wild Bunch. You will
probable see more on these subjects in the next Cowboy
Chronicle.
South of the Border
The New Zealand Wild Bunch Championship, ‘South of
the Border’ is coming up from 23rd – 25th Sept so I hope
you have your entry in. Get that 1911 out and fire a few
magazines through it. Talk to Rustler for more information
and entry forms on the PNZ website
North Island Champs
Entry forms also on PNZ website. It will be a great shoot
from 8th – 11th Sept. Get your entry in today.
High Noon
The New Zealand CAS Champs / SASS NZ Regional ‘High
Noon’ is being hosted by the Golden Downs Rangers from
3rd – 6th Nov. Weather will be great, food will be great
and the stages exciting. So send that entry away today.
RIP
We hear with sadness the passing of young Tommy
Hawke, son and cowboy shooting mate of the late Dirty
Harry. Condolences to the family.
Lindis Ranger and Nightshooter were joining up with
Lightning Jack and Tuscon for a month long trip, taking
in wild west history, local culture and three shooting
matches. Travelling by RV, we would travel over 2,000
miles and the country would change from snow-covered
passes at 12,000 feet in the Rockies to the 42c of the
parched Nevada desert.
Spirits were high as we arrived in Denver then into the RV
and onto Cheyenne to stay with our good friends Deputy
Cuny & Doris. Next morning it was down to Briggsdale to
a one-day match. ‘Begin early and finish before it gets too
hot’ seemed to be the plan.
The range area was dead flat with berms made out of
large square bales of maize. It seemed to work really well
but offered no shade from the hot hot sun. Nightshooter
shot a clean match thus winning a buffalo and Lightning
Jack won overall. Next day we spent time at a gun show in
Cheyenne as well as the local shooting range.
What a great facility, built by the city for sporting shooters.
Users are charged for using the range, but what an asset.
Our next port of call was to Buffalo Bills gravesite just
outside Denver. This wild-west showman brought a
romantic version of the American west to people around
the world. And onward we travelled stopping off at Mesa
Verde and then out to Monument Valley.
The film director John Ford used this valley as a backdrop
to many John Wayne movies. But since then ‘Back to the
Future’, ‘Forrest Gump’, ‘The Lone Ranger’ and many
more have had scenes filmed there. Horses were saddled
up. We ‘cowboyed up’ and with our Navajo guide rode
off into the sunset. It was a great experience in such a
remarkable place.
The next shoot was the Revenge of Montezuma at Cortez.
This fun shoot hosted by The Windygap Regulators has
always been known as a good warm-up match before EOT.
After setting up camp and partaking in a cold adult
beverage, along comes another RV holding the rest
of Team Kiwi shooting this match. Rooster and Dusty
Barrels, along with Daisy Rae and Laredo Kid were keen
on catching up with our adventures so far. Ten stages over
two days with some great cowboy action shooters was a
recipe for a great time. All of Team Kiwi commented on
how close the targets were. My reply ‘you haven’t seen
anything yet. Just wait till EOT’.
Lightning Jack ended up winning the match with
Nightshooter shooting a clean match and 4th Duelist,
Lindis Ranger 3rd Duelist, Rooster 1st Young Gun (and a
girlfriend), Dusty Barrels 2nd Wrangler, and Tuscon 3rd
Senior Gunfighter. As soon as we had said our goodbyes,
the two RV’s began the five-hour run down to End of Trail.
‘Yeah, we’re coming too’.
Those were the few words that got us to work organizing
our USA road trip to End Of Trail ’16.
20 www.pistolnz.org.nz
The first thing any newcomer says when they first see
the shooting grounds at ‘Founders Ranch’ is ‘Wow it’s
big, look at all the RV’s. Look at all the ranges and the
buildings’. The rest of Team Kiwi, Miss Kitty Russell, Bobby
Steele and Witch Doctor, rolled into camp shortly after as
they had been out to a party. They had all been shooting
Wild Bunch for the last four days with one more day to go.
Team Kiwi was now complete.
Bullshooter #242
Our first two days were practice days (shooting with Tex)
with some gun-smithing thrown in. You’ve just got to
jump at the chance of getting all the new gadgets fitted
to your guns with all those gun experts there, and the gun
engraver was also looking for work. “Oh, and that’s a nice
leather rig, how much?” I think there was quite a bit of
pocket money spent!
Then came side match day. We shot some speed matches
but the competition was FAST. Deuce Stevens and SASS
Kicker seemed to dominate here. The opening ceremony
that evening was the official start to EOT ’16. The colours
were paraded with Lightning Jack our standard bearer.
‘The Star Spangled Banner’ and the ‘Pledge of Allegiance
to The Flag’ was followed by a couple of speeches, then
drinks.
Thursday was the beginning of main match. Four stages
were shot each day but the nerves were highly strung and
on edge for the first couple. Front sight, front sight! Matt
Black, last year’s winner, was shooting on the same posse
as Lightning Jack & Tuscon. He wasn’t going as fast as
usual but was steady and calculating. A tactic that would
eventually see him into 2nd place overall. Our posse
would actually end up having five shooters in the top fifty
overall for the match so the shooting was fast and furious.
With shooting only taking up three hours of the day there
was plenty of time to catch up with old friends and ‘chew
the fat’, do some more shopping (SASS = Single Action
Shopping Society?) or go back to the RV and relax and
clean guns until the evenings entertainment. It’s at about
this time you know you’re not going to fit everything into
your large suitcase for the trip home and start working
out ‘plan B’. Lindis Ranger’s rifle was working well and
Roosters pistols still needed some fine-tuning. Rooster’s
communication skills were unquestionably superb
as shown with the harem of young cowgirls he was
associating with.
It rained a few times at the match, but not enough to
disrupt the shooting. The type of red soil just turns to red
mud, but if left to drain away and dry out, just turns back
to red concrete. Miss Kitty’s golf cart seemed to get plenty
of use. The RV park is about 300 metres from the ‘main
street’ and the stages and seems to be uphill both ways.
Any hint of exhaustion after shooting was finished for the
day and Rooster would sprint up to Miss Kitty’s RV, pick up
the golf cart and help us back to our RV with all our gear,
our shopping and our gun carts.

EOT Buckles
The following came home with EOT Buckles – Kiwi Witch
Doctor, Miss Kitty Russell, White Lightning Jack, Kiwi
Rooster, Lindis Ranger.
Well done to Team Kiwi, this is the most buckles we’ve
won during an EOT.
Your next step is to win the big shiny ones – no pressure.
Good luck next time.
Miss Kitty, Bobby Steele and Witch Doctor made a fast
getaway for their long trip back to Houston for their
flight home. Meantime it was with a hint of sadness, a
sigh of exhaustion, the elation of winning buckles and
an expectation of new adventures that we left Founders
Ranch and headed south to Tombstone.
This old west town, the place of legends and gunfights,
would keep us amused for a couple of days. Although
popular with tourists, we could still rat around and find
historic gems like the Birdcage Theatre and Wyatt’s house.
A big night out cowboyed up at Big Nose Kate’s Saloon had
Rooster and his brother Laredo Kid getting their photos
taken in the coffin, while one of two of the older cowboys
had to make do with photos of them cuddling up to the
pretty waitress.
It’s amazing the wealth that was here back in the towns
early days. This was due to the mining of silver, gold
and copper. In the days of Wyatt Earp, they feasted on
delicacies like canned peaches and oysters. Fire ravaged
the town on at least three occasions so it was rebuilt using
stone and adobe brick. Wealth in Tombstone finally dried
up due to the silver mines flooding, caused by the pumps
unable to work because of dirty diesel.
We were now onto the final leg of our road trip heading
for Las Vegas via the Dillon factory in Scottsdale/Phoenix
and then Wickenburg while Dusty Barrels and family
headed for the Grand Canyon. Wickenburg is another
town with a rich history of mining and ranching and has
a museum with a wonderful collection of western art.
Team Kiwi minus Miss Kitty, Bobby Steele & Witch Doctor who were on the way to their flight home.

Bullshooter #242
Travelling through the Joshua Tree National Park, past the
Hoover Dam, we then entered the city of sin.
Las Vegas seems to only exist for the guilty pleasures
of life – gambling, eating, drinking, partying and flesh. I
could see it was going to be a pretty big job keeping my
three travelling companions on the straight and narrow!
A Garth Brooks concert was one of two shows we saw as
well as going to the racetrack to watch Nascars with Dusty
Barrels, Rooster and family.
But we did have time to also go to a gun show and also
to Battlefield Vegas for a ‘play’. Tuscon shot the mini gun
(4000rpm) while Nightshooter and Lightning Jack shot
the Saw .223, M2 30 carbine, MP40 and Sten gun. There
is nothing like shooting a belt fed machine gun to put
a ‘smile on your dial’! And after a night on the loose in
Fremont Street, all we had to look forward to was about
18 hours of flying in ‘cattle class’ to get home.
What we didn’t realize was the shock of going from 40c
down to -4c. We froze our butts off for the first week we
were home.
It was a great trip.
End of Trail is an experience that is always remembered
fondly. ‘Come for the shooting, stay for the people’ is a
phrase SASS uses, and it’s true.
Cowboy action shooters were always coming up and
saying ‘I shot with you guys here in two thousand and
whatever. It’s great to see you again. Anything you need?’.
So if you can, make the trip...............
You won’t be disappointed!

Gear Review Corner
A trip through the
H&K Factory
By John Herbert
I always liked H&K’s catch phrase.......
“In a world of compromise some don’t”, for some reason
that seemed a perfect fit for the two H&K firearms I
owned at the time. An ex Bundeswehr G3 rifle and P7
Pistol; both performed perfectly, no malfunctions, very
good accuracy and even though the G3 was utilitarian in
its design it was solid and the roller locked action always
struck me as being a very clever solution. The P7 with its
gas delayed locking and squeeze cocking action was pretty
left field at the time but like the G3 it just plain worked
and with a fixed barrel it was the most accurate 9mm I
have ever owned.
When the opportunity to visit the H&K factory in Oberndorf
came up I jumped at the chance; I spent 2 days looking
at the factory and shooting H&K Pistols, Rifles and submachineguns. The visit is an article all in itself but if there
was one overriding thing I took from the visit it was H&K’s
commitment to quality. The factory as you would expect
was high tech and filled with the latest CNC mills but what
surprised me most was the amount of hand finishing and
inspection I saw. CNC mills can make just about anything
but the H&K people were adamant that hand finishing
and inspection is essential if you want a first class firearm.
For the purpose of this article I will focus on the H&K SFP9
pistol as it H&K’s newest pistol and it is a real option for
Production class.
The SFP9 or as it’s known in the USA the VP9 is a
conventional 9mm duty type pistol with a modified
Browning tilt barrel locking system; to be honest it looks
similar to a number of other modern striker fired pistols,
but don’t let appearances fool you the SFP9 has a number
of clever features that set it apart from its competition.

Pistol NZ 23
The frame is polymer and like all modern duty pistols it
has a Picatinny rail moulded into the front of the frame.
The pistol is completely ambidextrous, with dual paddle
magazine releases and a right hand side slide release that
mirrors the position of the left hand one.
does my personal SP01 Shadow but I was impressed at
just how fast I could achieve a clear sight picture. When
I started shooting the SFP9 I immediately liked it, striker
fired guns are always nicer to take the first shot on as
there is no double action pull to overcome.
The front of the grip has an angle that seems about the
same as a 1911 and the front has 3 shallow grooves
for your fingers. The crackle type finish on the grips is
comfortable and feels very adhesive.
The trigger wasn’t as crisp as the single action pull on my
SP01 but it was better than any striker fired gun I had used
before. The reason it felt good is that it’s fully single action
and does not partially cock the striker when pulling like a
Glock does.
The trigger guard has an undercut and this combined
with the beavertail style tang allows you to get a very
high grip on the pistol. In fact the first time I picked it up
I immediately noticed how close my hand seemed to the
bore axis.
The SFP9 is offered with 3 replaceable back straps and
six interchangeable side plates; this gives the shooter 27
different options to configure the grip and as I found out
getting it perfect is easy and very worthwhile.
It’s hard to measure how much quicker a perfect grip
makes you but with a grip configured SFP9 I ran a club
IPSC course quicker than I did with my SP01 Shadow.
I was surprised how much more control I had when I set
the grips and back strap up to suit my hand. I guess it’s not
surprising that a better grip leads to better results.
There is a bit of take-up but it transitions into a clear
release point and the 5.5 pound break is easy to control
and the reset is quite short and very clearly felt and heard.
The decent trigger combined with the high grip made it a
very comfortable pistol to shoot. I shot the pistol over two
sessions and let a number of other shooters try it out as
well.
As you would expect there were no malfunctions
whatsoever. During my visit to H&K in Germany I was
given a demonstration of the reliability that included limp
wristing and firing the pistol upside down, there were no
malfunctions.
Accuracy wise at 15 yards off hand using two loads, my
plated 125gn and some Norma 115gn factory I was able
to keep shots into a 60mm group. At 20m off a rest in
Germany using a well worn SFP9 I could get the groups
down to 50mm using Ruag and Sellior & Bellot 115 grain
loads Police ammunition.
I suspect if I had some 124gn loads the groups may have
been even tighter as the SFP9 I shot in New Zealand liked
that projectile weight best.
I really liked the SFP9, it points so nicely and the ability to
set the grip up perfectly for your hand is a major advantage.
Accuracy was very good, fit and finish excellent and having
seen how they are made I have total confidence in the
build quality.
John Herbert
The slide is a typical of the breed with a blocky appearance
with serrations both at the front and rear for ease of
cocking but H&K goes one step further and adds two
ears to the back of the slide. H&K calls them “charging
supports” and they are in the perfect place for quickly
racking the slide. They are removable should the shooter
prefer a cleaner slide and the replacements parts fit flush.
The sights on the SFP9 are steel and of the low profile
combat type. The rear sight has two white luminescent
dots while the front has a single dot. The sights are a lot
better than the plastic sights that adorn similar pistols and
while the layout of sights is a personal preference I had no
problems obtaining a quick and clear sight picture. As a
bonus the SFP9 shot point of aim straight out of the box.
As mentioned when I first handled the pistol I was surprised
at just how well it pointed, the H&K P30 which looks like
a hammer operated version of the SFP9 points nicely as
