President’s Message
Merry Christmas and Happy New Year to
you all!
This is my last newsletter, as my term is
over. Our newly elected president is
Dennis Serpa. He was our president when
I first joined this unit. He went on to
become the BCHC state president. Dennis
is very active with our parade group and is
one of our youth directors. He was
instrumental in organizing the BCHA
National meeting at Jerry Tindell’s last
April. I asked Dennis to lead our unit, as
he is well respected amongst all of our
members and a great leader. He graciously
accepted and I am very excited about our
2016 year.
We are building a fantastic relationship
with the Forest Service as the head ranger
of Summit District, Molly Fuller, attended
our last meeting. She was accompanied by
Forest Supervisor Miguel Macias. Molly
spoke to the unit for a short time and
answered some questions. The unit
applauded Molly and Miguel for their
presence and interest in keeping trails
open. The one concern the unit had was
why so many trees are dying. Molly
explained that when dead trees are cut
down, they are analyzed for the cause of
death. Not to our surprise, her answer was
that most of the trees are drought stricken.
I know all farmers and agriculture people
in the valley are praying for a super winter.
All of the meteorologists are talking El
Nino, but I will believe it when I see it!
All we can do is see what Mother Nature
has in store for us day by day. The storms
are hitting certain parts of the country
pretty hard and maybe we ought to be
careful of what we ask for. I was driving
down by a river yesterday and it looked
like people forgot what the rivers look like
when they overflow. I saw homes located
short distances from disaster. Just imagine
getting six inches of rain in an hour.
Regardless of the circumstances, I’m still
praying.
Calling all Dutch oven chefs! When I
joined this unit, it was the cobbler desserts
that impressed me and my sweet tooth the
most. Some of our members also knew
very well how to cook those great
casseroles, also which made for a perfect
and well balanced meal. We are going to
have a couple of DOG days each of the
next two months so we can practice, enjoy
company, meet new friends and have a
Mid Valley Unit Happy Meal.
The attendance at the Christmas party was
down this year and we have formed a
committee to research if we should have a
Christmas party in 2016 or have a different
type of gathering to replace it. I know this
party is very important because many of
you attend it every year. For some of you,
this is the only unit event you attend.
Please keep in mind that at our annual
Christmas party, we also elect our next
year’s new directors. If we decide to
cancel the Christmas party for 2016 and
substitute a different winter event, we have
to set the date in January, give or take a
month. If you have any ideas, concerns or
different places, call Katherine Reeves.
She is the committee chairperson.
I must say, it was my pleasure to serve my
fellow Mid Valley members as your
president the last two years, but I firmly
believe that change is healthy for any
organization. I hope that everyone
supports Backcountry Horsemen as they
have done in the past or even more in the
future!
Happy Trails.
Carl
Youth & Novice Packing Practice
Doug and Cathy Dollarhide will be hosting a “Packing
Practice” at their home in Escalon sometime in late
January or February, 2016. This event will be geared
toward those youth members who would like to get in
some practice, with possible plans for competing at the
BCHC Rendezvous in March. For our novices, this is a
chance to get more hands-on practice before the summer
packing season arrives.
Maybe you are already packing, but would just like some
additional practice before the contests at Rendezvous?
Once we nail down an exact date, we will have it in the
next newsletter, and we will notify members with an
email blast. If you are interested in this event, please
contact Doug Dollarhide or Karen Lopes for details.

Hello everyone. I sent several cards this
month. We were sorry to learn of the passing of Manuel
DeOliveria. Manuel and his wife Carla, have been members of
Mid Valley Unit since the ‘90s and Manuel served very capably
in his term as unit secretary. Carla, we are sorry for your loss.
Sadly, Roger Rummerfield’s father was diagnosed with cancer
and Sandee Watts’ cancer has returned. Dora Rocha was injured
in a horse accident. Julie Perry is still dealing with her knee
problems.
Please keep each of these unit members in your thoughts and
prayers. If you know of someone needing some sunshine, please
let me know. My phone number is 209-402-7252 or you may
email me at [email protected]. Happy New Year!

Mid Valley Monthly is the official monthly newsletter of
Circulation is approximately 360 copies per issue.
In order to get things going for the 2016 Rendezvous, we are
going to push the Dutch oven gatherings! Of course, we have
the New Year’s Day Ride/Potluck/Dutch Oven Gathering at Red
Hills, January 1. Plan to eat at 1 p.m. Then, January 9, we will
be at Carl Perry’s place at 22682 Williams in Hilmar. Plan to
arrive by noon and eat at 2 p.m. January 30 we will be at Tina
MacLauchlan’s , at 237 Church Hill Rd, San Andreas. Tina said
GPS devices get it wrong, so for precise directions, email Tina
at [email protected]. February 6 we will be at Mary Beth
Baglione’s and February 20 at Jim Westmoreland’s. March 5
we will be at Joan Lewis’s and then the Rendezvous, March 18
to 20. All of this is in order to get some practice in with the
Dutch ovens and to try new recipes. Hopefully, it will lead to
more entries in the Dutch Oven Cook-Off competition at
Rendezvous. We need at least five entries
per category (entries consist of one to four
people) and there are two categories –
amateur and pro. Check the BCHC
website for entry fees and forms.

I want to give Debra Mason a big thank you for pushing the trail
clearing at Gateway Park. Modesto has always had golf courses.
Now it has quite a few bike lanes. And, finally, Modesto has
some place for horsemen to ride. We can ride from Beard Brook
Park (that is where Gateway Park starts) all the way to Carpenter
Road. To get there, take 9th Street to B, turn east and take 10th
Street to Morton Blvd. Park there, to the right, where Morton
dead ends. There is room for at least four rigs. Ride toward
Beard Brook Park and follow the trails along the river. You can
ride for a couple of hours up and down and around, as the trail
divides and comes back to where you started. There is a dirt
road but the trails are so much nicer. The road is great for
driving carts – just ask Marlene Fultz and John Marshall. You
can meander a long ways. The main trail is wide enough for an
ATV so that the game warden can quickly check on things, if
needed. We need to ride these trails in order to get them more
established. Otherwise, with these fabulous recent rains, the
grasses will soon cover all of our hard work. If you want to park
under the bridges, you might try the entry on the west side of the
7th Street Bridge. That gate is usually open. And, since it is
always good to not just head straight back to the trailer, ride
along the river all the way to Dry Creek and then back to the
trailer. Remember, always ride with someone, no matter where
you are!
Reluctant to ride Gateway Park? Contact me at 209-577-1594 or
[email protected] and we’ll arrange riding together.
I’ve ridden down there four or five times and worked there on
the trail clearing project about the same number of times so I am
very familiar with the area.

Columbia’s
All Equestrian
Christmas Parade
A big thank you to Tim Fraser and Quartz
Mountain Stage for loaning the surrey and
horses for Santa and Mrs. Claus and to
Bob Anderson for driving them safely
along the parade route. Riding along with
Santa was Gary Neubert, president of the
Columbia Chamber of Commerce.
By Kathy Zumbrunn
We all know that having a parade in the
middle of winter has its problems,
and this year had a few. Mother
Nature decided to tease us with
gorgeous weather all the way up to
Saturday night, then threw in a big
storm! Did that throw us into a
tailspin? Of course not…we are
Backcountry Horsemen! A little
damp weather doesn’t stop us from
doing what we planned. The rains
held off until around 10 a.m., then
they came down. Thankfully, it
didn’t pour and the winds didn’t
howl through the parade route.
Although cold and wet, the
contestants were troopers: smiling,
waving and even going around the
parade route twice, giving the
undaunted spectators a good show!
Although several entries dropped
out due to the weather, 13 entries
chose to participate. They were:
JANUARY 2016
Dennis Serpa, Joan Lewis, Ric Tilbury,
Dennise Davis, Dan and Logan Prine,
Johnny Leal, Cathy and Doug Dollarhide,
Ernie Warzyca, David and Jody Rumsey,
Joe Pimentel, Darla Coelho, Claudia
Parrish, Christine Kaplan, Lee Owning,
Kayla Ogden, Corky Fellingham,
Katherine Reeves,
and John Marshall.
(If I missed
anyone, I
apologize. I didn’t
get around too
much to get
everyone’s photo!)
So another year
has passed and we
pulled off yet
another successful
parade. I want to
thank everyone
who participated,
helped, or just
showed up to
watch the parade.

Mid Valley Youth Day Report
November 21, 2015
Saletta’s Lazy S Ranch
By Karen Lopes
Photos by Donna Rummerfield
We had beautiful weather and a great turnout at our most recent MV
Youth Day event. Eleven youth showed up, including two new
members, to Saletta’s Lazy S Ranch in Oakdale. The day started with
some warm-up exercises and horseback games. (muleback, too!)
Valerie Perry and I helped the riders with some basic horsemanship
skills as we have done in the past. Doug Dollarhide and Rudy
Dezzani set up the iron mule and Doug’s real mule, Abby, for packing
practice. Parents, grandparents and friends of the youth seemed to
game, the “Water and Cup” contest. Mounted riders were handed a
little cup full of water and then had to walk, jog and trot around the
arena for a little while. We then gathered everyone back to the center
and had them compare the water left in their cups. Most of them had
lost nearly all of their water! By an overwhelming request, the youth
then practiced their loping skills. One at a time, they each had an
opportunity to lope circles with their mounts - some mounts were
willing and able, others not so much. This is an area we will
definitely spend some more time on in the future.
enjoy themselves, sitting and watching their kids riding and having
fun. After some warm-up exercises, including “Follow the Leader,”
we played “Egg and Spoon Race.” We only had to get to the trot and
most of the riders lost their eggs! After that, we did the “TP Race,”
where riders partnered up and each had to hold the end of a short
stretch of toilet paper. We rode around the arena until the TP ripped
or someone dropped their end! Some of the horses weren’t real fond
of that white, flowing paper getting too close, so we had a little
“desensitizing” to do before we got the game underway. After that,
we tied up and gathered around the iron mule. Doug and Rudy helped
with the Box Hitch, and some of the kids are just about ready for the
competition at the BCHC Rendezvous! David Rumsey had
volunteered to fix lunch, so after some practice on the iron mule, we
were treated to a fantastic lunch of hot dogs, chips, cookies and drinks
from David. After that nice lunch break, we headed back for a little
more packing practice. Some of the parents got involved as well, and
so we might just have us some new packers ready to go by next
summer! Soon we headed back to the arena, and we played one more
I would like to send a BIG thank you to the Saletta’s for donating the
use of their beautiful facility for this youth activity. We hope to have
some future events there as well. Another BIG thank you goes to
David Rumsey for volunteering to fix lunch for all of the participants
and spectators. Thank you also to Claudia Parrish for coming out and
handling the paperwork for new members who joined that day, and I
believe there was a boarder who was considering joining MV BCHC
as well. Thank you to Doug Dollarhide and Rudy Dezzani for setting
up the iron mule, as well as having the live mule there for packing
practice. That was enjoyed by just about everyone in attendance!
Thank you to the parents, grandparents and family friends who hauled
these kids and their stock to the event. And lastly, thank you to the
great kids who showed up: Nathan Rummerfield, Kaitlyn, Makayla
and Kaci Rumsey, Sarah VanHoogmoed, Anya Lewis, Jordan
Pestana, Barbara Baglione, Sidney Saunders, and Janet and Ivan
Gomez (new members!) Valerie and I enjoyed working with all of
you!
We don’t have a date set for our next event, but we are looking at
getting together at the Dollarhides’ place in Escalon, maybe in
February, for packing practice. We would like to see some of our
youth get involved with the various packing contests at the
Rendezvous. I will send an email out to all of the youth who are on
my list. If you haven’t received any of those emails from me, please
send me an email at [email protected] so I can add you to my list.
