PRESS RELEASE
AMCHAM VIETNAM’S GRANT ALLOCATION 2011
Ho Chi Minh City, 8 July 2011, The American Chamber of Commerce (AmCham Vietnam) will hold Grants Award
Ceremony of “AmCham’s Grant Allocation” for 8 organizations whose projects approved in 2011.
Initiated since 2004, this program is part of AmCham’s annual community activities, which aims to support various
organizations such as: NGOs, Private Volunteer Organizations, social clubs, libraries, and schools… in Ho Chi
Minh City and nearby provinces, whose projects is to support education, improve health and wellness, develop
living skills and working capabilities.
This year, the total fund of AmCham Vietnam’s Grant Allocation for 8 projects is up to 640.912.000 VND (30.520
USD). Especially, in line with “Year of children” according to the instruction No. 09/CT-UBND by Ho Chi Minh City
People’s Committee, the program this year had 5/8 projects aimed to poor and impaired children, including 2
educational and 3 healthcare for children projects. With this program, AmCham hopes to contribute to a positive
transformation of younger generation. Besides, the program also funded projects aimed to support poor and rural
women’s vocational training. This encourages organizations to maintain and develop their operations, especially to
those located in remote areas, where access to sponsors is still limited.
Since 2004, “AmCham’s Grant Allocation” has supported approximately 50 projects with total budget up to 180,000
USD. The program’s highlight is the focus of project’s sustainment as well as its targets and beneficiaries. All
projects were reviewed rigorously by Allocation Team, including application form screening and site-checking.
One year since project conducted, AmCham continues to assess efficiency of using budget by the evaluation of
Audit Team. With working experiences earned from Audit Department of prestigious companies, Intel for example,
or audit companies like Ernst&Young, KPMG, the team members will help to review projects after conducting to
ensure efficiency of granted budgets. Allocation Team’s members consist of staffs from AmCham member’s companies: Citibank, Avery Dennison, Pepsi Co, VCCI, GE, TRG, Russin&Vecchi…etc. Furthermore, there are voluntary
participation from members of AmCham Scholars Alumni (ASA). All Allocation Team members contribute to ensure
projects’ quality.
Mr. Herb Cochran, AmCham’s Executive Director said: “The AmCham Grants Allocation Team is part of CSR
Working Group, consisted of more than 15 Vietnamese volunteers from AmCham companies’ staff and AmCham
Scholars Alumni/ae. We are all working under the mission “of Vietnamese people, by Vietnamese people, and for
Vietnamese people.” Our Committee supports smaller Local Organizations in Ho Chi Minh City area and southern
Vietnam that may not have easy access to large grants from international foundations. Simultaneously, the program
also provides a bridge for entrepreneurs and students from AmCham Scholars Alumni/ae (ASA) to give back to the
community.”

I. PRESS RELEASE
Being one of organizations whose projects were funded in 2010, Mr. Nguyen Van Phuc, Vice President of Tuong
Lai children impaired school (District 5), shared his idea: “With the fund 69,102,000 dongs from AmCham, the
project “Upgrading facilities and providing computers for Tuong Lai school” allowed us to raise classroom roof for
preventing heat and leaking, build a new restroom, expand a classroom with aluminum-glass classroom door; playground was lifted and brick-paved, students were provided computers… The project helped to create a ventilated
and hygeinic learning environment for students, which efficiently and practically facilitated in rehabilitating impaired
children’s functions.”
NOTES FOR EDITOR:
I.
AmCham Vietnam’s CSR activities:
Besides the program “AmCham Vietnam’s Grants Allocation”, AmCham also has other community activities:
1.
June 14 is a special annual day dedicated to celebrate voluntary, non-remunerated blood donors world-
wide. In 2011, for the first time in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), the American Chamber of Commerce in Vietnam
(AmCham Vietnam) held the World Blood Donor Day. Targeting employees of the FDI sector and other enterprises
in HCMC, the AmCham’s World Blood Donor Day aims to:
2.
• Create wider awareness of the vital role of blood transfusion in saving lives and improving the health of Vietnamese people.
• Motivate more employees of the business sector to become regular voluntary unpaid blood donors to ensure sufficient stocks of blood to meet national requirements, even in emergency situations.
• Recognize regular voluntary unpaid donors as public health role models; it is because they lead healthy lifestyles and are regularly screened that they are able to donate blood regularly.
• Receive blood in order to overcome blood deprivation in the summer 2011. At the event, 422 volunteers donated 454 blood units, (equivalent to 114,750 ml blood).
International Coastal Cleanup:Tentative date of this year program is on September 17. With Vietnam’s long
coastline, we are all connected to the ocean. Trash that falls from our hands is one of the most pervasive pollution
problems facing our world’s ocean. But it doesn’t have to be. Keeping our ocean free from trash is one of the easiest things we can do to help protect it.
3.
AmCham Scholarship: The annual AmCham Scholarships granted by American Chamber of Commerce
at HCM City (AmCham) are awarded to students who are dynamic, ambitious, active participation in school/social
activities and holders of excellent academic performance. The AmCham Scholarship Program is part of the business group’s efforts to contribute to community development in Vietnam. It involves the AmCham Human Resources Committee members, all of whom are managers in AmCham member companies, helping to prepare senior
students at some of the most famous universities in HCMC to enter the world of employment with local and international companies.
