Our Mission
The Mission of the Durham Nativity School is to provide a tuition-free, enriched learning environment and
an eleven-year support system for middle school boys. Our students have the ability and commitment to
achieve, but not the resources for a quality, independent school education. We promote a rigorous academic
program and nurture the whole child to reach his potential through knowledge, moral values, learning skills,
discipline, and character development. We instill the value of service for others as we build tomorrow’s role
models and community leaders.
“I will inspire
and encourage our
students to become
intelligent leaders.”
Mary Anderson,
Science Teacher

ANNUAL REPORT 2013-2014
Letter from the Chairman
RASHAD PERRY: Alumni Spotlight
WHEN RASHAD PERRY ARRIVED
at Durham Nativity School in 2004,
it was totally against his will. He was
going through a rebellious phase, and
he was convinced that everyone was
out to get him. He wanted to attend
the local public school with the rest
of his friends, but his grandmother
had other plans. Rashad had never
met his father, and his mother was
not a real part of his life. His
grandmother was raising him and his
little sister, and she felt that Durham
Nativity School would provide him
the best chance at a positive future.
I am often reminded of the old saying “It’s hard to be what you can not see” when I think about the dreams and
aspirations of the young men at Durham Nativity School. The young men have people in their lives who are
making a tremendous commitment to their education. Success at Durham Nativity School requires dedication
from both the students and their families. Our students are able to see that their entire family is committed to their
success at Durham Nativity School.
We talk a lot about citizenship and what it means to be a good and productive citizen. A good and productive
citizen is more than “an inhabitant of a particular town or city;” he is an active participant in helping all of his fellow
citizens enjoy a better and more productive life. This past spring, Durham Nativity School honored Dan Hill at the
Dare to Dream Event as he is the embodiment of a good and productive citizen. The young men and their families
have witnessed Dan Hill’s unyielding devotion to their success over the past 12 years.
This past summer, thanks to the generousity of Alston Gardner and Barb Lee, Durham Nativity School’s young men
attended The Institute for Responsible Citizenship (www.theinstitute.net) in Washington D.C. This opportunity
provided the young men the chance to meet “their future selves,” as they interacted with some of America’s best
and brightest African American male college students. Now, each young man at Durham Nativity School has a
mentor from The Institute to help them see what is truly possible.
On behalf of the young men and their families, I am grateful for your continued support of the young men and
your participation in their lives. I hope you will have a chance to see the young men in action this year whether
in the classroom, on the sports field, doing community service, or just being good citizens.
Best,
Brendan J Moylan
Rashad struggled through his first
couple of years at Durham Nativity
School. The culture was strict and
the curriculum was much more
difficult than the public school that
he attended in fifth grade. In addition
to the day to day rigors of DNS life,
Rashad faced the additional challenge
of having to catch the city bus to and
from school every day. This meant that he would have
to leave home by 6:30am each morning and would not
return until 8:00pm to begin his homework. By his
eighth grade year, Rashad was facing the possibility of
not graduating. His advisor, Dr. Vannelle, explained that
the faculty at DNS was there to help, but he had to apply
himself and commit to his studies. When Rashad
realized that he was in danger of the rest of his class
leaving him behind, he decided that he wanted
to make a change. He did not want to let his
grandmother down, and he did not want to let himself
down. He committed himself to doing his best in school
and brought up his grades. Rashad worked so hard that
he received a full scholarship to Trinity high school. He
was very excited to be accepted to this brand new school,
but his enthusiasm was soon met with challenges.
Rashad struggled at Trinity in the beginning. He
recognized that he was very different from his peers,
not just physically, but economically. It was difficult
at times to fit in, but he eventually found sports,
including basketball and soccer, as a way to relieve
stress. Rashad did okay throughout his first three years
in high school, but when it was time
to begin senior college applications, he
did not think that he was good enough
to attend. His advisors and teachers
were extremely supportive and
convinced him to apply to college and
even paid the college application fees.
To his surprise, Rashad was accepted to
several colleges and universities. It
occurred to him that he would be the
first one in his family to attend
college.
HE HAD A NEW MISSION: TO
ATTEND COLLEGE, GRADUATE,
GET A GOOD JOB, AND MAKE
SURE THAT HIS GRANDMOTHER
WOULD NEVER AGAIN HAVE TO
WORRY ABOUT MONEY.
His goal was to be able to help his
grandmother and his little sister.
He graduated from Trinity’s inaugural
senior class in 2010.
Rashad found that college life at North Carolina
Agricultural and Technical State University suited him
well. His grades continued to improve every year. He
served as the manager of the basketball team, and even
received a ring when the team won their conference title.
Rashad also chose to be an Orientation Student Leader.
He wanted to help other students throughout the
college transition process as so many others had helped
him throughout his educational career. Rashad saw all
of his dreams come true as he graduated in June of 2014
Magnum Cum Laude, with a degree in Sports Medicine
When Rashad was asked what helped him most
throughout his educational career, he said it was the love
and support of his grandmother, as well as a skill that
he learned while attending DNS: perseverance. Rashad
would like to motivate the next generation of young men
that may be struggling with some of the same issues that
he experienced.
HE CONTINUES TO LIVE BY THE DNS MAN
CREED EVERY DAY: DARE TO DREAM BIG, NEVER
GIVE UP, AND STRIVE TO EXCEL.

Where Are
They Now?

attend the following schools:
BOARDING HIGH SCHOOLS:
Daring to dream big… it’s in our DNA. Birthed as the dream of Dr. Joseph and
Mrs. Ann Carole Moylan thirteen years ago, Durham Nativity School now stands
as a cornerstone for the fulfillment of dreams. I have heard it said that the first
ingredient of success-the earliest spark in the dreaming youth is this: dream a
great dream. John Alan Appleman.
Our young men are reminded daily of the importance of dreaming big. We
start each morning reciting the Durham Nativity School Man Creed. The Creed
begins, “As DNS men, we will dare to dream big!” Our students are encouraged
to identify their life’s mission, to believe in themselves, to believe in each other
and to believe they have the grit, determination and perseverance to realize
their dreams.
When recently asked to share their dreams and aspirations, our current eighth
graders painted a fairly vivid picture. Their class composite included graduating
from Durham Nativity School, with honors; attending and graduating from a
private high school like Woodberry Forest or Durham Academy, with honors;
earning degrees from Duke and Johns Hopkins; traveling the world; playing
soccer professionally; marrying and living happily with a beautiful wife and two
kids; driving a lime green Lamborghini; donating to Durham Nativity School;
finding cures for many diseases; and building the world’s tallest building.
Now that’s daring to dream big!
Our mission is to lay a foundation that inspires our young men to dream and
live out their dreams. You and I believe in them, encourage them, and prepare
them for the challenges, roadblocks, opportunities and successes that lie
ahead. Partners, thank you for your investment in the lives of our young men
including all their journeys and dreams. We invite you to continue sharing in
our success as we witness and celebrate dream after dream fulfilled.
Thank you,
Dr. Dan Vannelle

The Development Team’s goal is to continue the legacy of Dr. Joseph
Moylan, and to assist Durham Nativity School and its leaders as we strive
to reach the next level of excellence for the school. However, we are very
aware that our successes are due to our supporters and the trust that
they have given us to be judicious with the funds they invest. We
consider the cost and necessity of every purchase and we are
consistently mindful of our budget. Our promise to you is that we will
continue to be attentive to our funding and ensure that your money
will always be used in the best way possible. We realize that our
students’ and school’s needs far outweigh our capacity to completely
fill those needs. However, we pledge to you that we are determined to
succeed because our mission is a noble one. We seek a partnership with
you in that quest.
