Delaware Water Gap,
Pennsylvania, USA
Competitors who are traveling from far afield may want
to prepare for NAOC 2012 by visiting world-famous
Surebridge Mountain and the other maps and terrain of
the 1993 World Orienteering Championships—the only
World Orienteering Championships ever held in North
America. This fantastic terrain is located just 100 km by
car from the event center. Also just 100 km away is a
completely different experience. Manhattan, the center
of New York City, beckons with its bright lights and
unrivaled dynamism.

COMPETITION AND CLASSES
Standard Orienteering USA courses,
classes, and rules will be in place for the
entire event, with the exception of the
relay and any exceptions required by the
IOF for the WRE competitors. (http://
orienteeringusa.org/rules)
The relay competition will be limited to a
small number of 3-person national elite
and elite junior teams. But, with this race
sharing the same arena as the Sunday
sprints, all competitors will be able to easily
transition from running to spectating as the
Björn Kjellström Cup completion is decided
at high noon on the last day.
Start draws for the WRE courses will be
done in accordance with IOF rules with
an eye towards providing an exciting
conclusion to each day’s racing. The top
elites will generally be last on the start list.

THE NORTH AMERICAN CHAMPIONSHIPS AND THE BJÖRN KJELLSTRÖM CUP
The NAOCs have been contested every two years since the early 1970s. Most of
those years have featured a competition between the elite athletes from the US
and Canada. Named for orienteering luminary and co-founder of the United States
Orienteering Federation, Björn Kjellström, this competition had generally been
dominated by Canada, until the US broke the Canadian streak in 2010. The athletes
from north of the border will be out to avenge this loss when teams reconvene.
The competition will be even more furious at NAOC 2012 with the debut of a
fourth event. After the last individual race on Sunday—the sprint—participants will
gather to watch as the top North American orienteering athletes in the junior and
adult elite categories race head-to-head in a relay, with a total winning time of
under one hour.
TIMING

All days competitions will use
SPORTident epunching.
special focus on
event production
One of North America’s most
knowledgeable competitors and
arena announcers will lead the
announcing crew, aided by radio
controls and spectator controls, with
live results at the arena each day.
We also want to allow off-site
audiences to tune in. For those
watching from home, timely results
on www.NAOC2012.org will allow
fans to keep in touch with the action
as it unfolds.
COMPETITION AREAS
MAPS
Each day will revolve around a carefully
selected arena, offering refreshments,
announcing, media, and sponsor and
club tents. Competitors will be bused
to Friday’s and Saturday’s events from
the event center or off-site parking. On
Sunday, with many competitors staying
onsite at PEEC, the sprint and relay arena
will be a short walk away.
Respected mappers for NAOC 2012
include Mark Dominie, Alexey Zuev,
Vladimir Zherdev, and Bob Burg. Each
have extensive mapping experience and
have produced maps for premier national
or international events. Existing maps
of similar terrain at the Delaware Water
Gap (produced by Mark Dominie) will be
available to purchase in advance of the
competition.

THE DELAWARE WATER GAP
LONG AT EGYPT MILLS
SPRINT AND RELAY AT PEEC
The glaciated Delaware Water Gap
uplands are bisected by the Delaware
River, which flows several hundreds of
meters below the mapped plateau. Shale
may be found through the area, especially
in stream beds and some barrens, and
sandstone and conglomerate are visible
in areas of small to moderate height
cliff faces that can follow ridgelines
for some hundreds of meters. A few
discrete boulders will be found through
the forest. Vegetation is mixed: the
competition areas are covered by at least
50% conifer forest, with the remainder
mature deciduous forest where oak
predominates. The conifer forest—oldgrowth hemlocks—is dramatically open
and incredibly fast.
The long area is covered by many parallel
ridges, occasionally punctuated by deep
ravines. It has a moderate trail network,
and numerous watercourses, marshes,
and ponds, and some beaver activity.
It is a decidedly dramatic location. The
Egypt Mills map contains portions of
the existing Stuckey Pond map. Male
and female elite classes will use 1:15,000
ISOM maps.
Sunday is all about PEEC. While this
area is entirely contained on the existing
Spackman Creek map, substantial
new building and improvements have
transformed the campus. Also, as the
sprint map will be mapped to ISSOM
standards, rather than 1:15,000 ISOM
standards, it will present a completely
different experience to competitors. The
forest area is generally open, but will offer
a greater density of contour features than
found in the other stages. The relay map
will be mapped to 1:10,000 scale.
MIDDLE AT ADAM’S CREEK
Some of the forest in the middle area
is younger and denser than in other
areas. Unlike other days, competitors will
traverse areas of reclaimed farmland,
with mixed rough open punctuated by a
number of stone walls. The middle area
has few substantial water features and
limited trails. This is entirely new terrain.
