I. Description
CSPM3002
CSPM3002 is a highly integrated PMIC with power management support for multi core processors, battery
charging and system power functions. It is targeted for power management for tablet and other portable
equipment. It has 5 high efficiency DCDC converters for the processor core and IO rails, High PSRR LDO’s for
sensor and other system peripherals, a high efficiency battery charger, a backlight LED driver with PWM
dimming inbuilt, a 5V DCDC boost converter for the OTG and HDMI applications, and a Coulomb counter for
battery monitoring and Fuel Gauge.
The high efficiency DCDC converters are designed keeping the power requirements of the latest System on
Chips (SoCs) available in the market.
The device supports a programmable Power up sequencing which can be customized to fit the SoC power
sequence requirement. The device supports an easy to use I2C interface for communication. More details

Apps Board Description
The Applications board has a USB 2.0 interface which along with a easy to use GUI (windows based) enables
the user to control the parameters of CSPM3002 and configure it for the end user application.

II. Features





Five programmable step down switch mode DC-DC converters, which support dynamic voltage
scaling.
o SMPS1: supports output voltage of 0.4 – 1.7V and max load current of 5A.
o SMPS2A: Supports output voltage range of 0.4 – 1.7V and max load of 1.5A.
o SMPS2B: Supports output voltage range of 0.4 – 1.7V and max load of 1.5A.
o SMPS3: Supports output voltage range of 0.4 – 1.7V and max load of 4.5A.
o SMPS4: Supports output voltage range of 1.2 – 1.85V/ 2.5/ 3.3V and max load of 1.5A.
Programmable LDOs:
o Supports 2.7 – 5.5V input
o Very good accuracy and transient performance
o Very high PSRR
o One low noise LDOs:
 One 1.2 – 3.3V output, 350 mA

III. Quick Setup Guide
Many of the components of CSPM3002 Applications board are susceptible to damage by electrostatic
discharge (ESD).Customers are advised to observe proper ESD handling precautions when unpacking and
handling the board, including the use of a grounded wrist strap at an approved ESD workstation.

Installing the Device Drivers
Device Drivers for CSPM3002- EVB can be found in the CD and alternatively on our website.
To install the drivers, please go to the driver folder in the CD or the location on your hard disk where the
drivers are downloaded. Right click and select install to the file named CSPM3002-EVB_vista.inf as shown in
the figure below. A windows message prompt will be shown asking the permission to install the drivers,
please provide the necessary permissions by choosing the “Install this driver software anyway” option

Connecting the CSPM3002 - EVB
Connect the board to you PC using the mini-USB cable to port J7 on the right hand top corner of the
applications board. The Add or remove hardware wizard will try to automatically install the software from
Windows update; please select “skip obtaining drivers from windows update”.

Now windows would be able to detect the drivers installed in the previous step and install the CSPM3002EVB on the computer.

Installing the Software
CSPM3002 software is easy to use GUI-Graphical user interface, which enables the user to access all its
features and get a better understanding of the chip interface. The software communicates through the USB
port of the PC and the minimum requirements for the software are:


A PC running windows XP or higher
A USB 2.0 Compatible port
The software is provided in the CD along with the Applications board, alternatively it is available for
download in our website https://www.cirelsystems.com. Download the installer zip file to your local hard
drive and run the setup.exe , this will open an interactive installer which will install the software into your
local machine(please make sure you have administrator privileges before running setup.exe). Once the
installation is complete you can launch the software from your desktop shortcut named CSPM3002.exe
When you launch your software, it automatically checks for any Cirel Systems Applications Board , and you
will receive an error message if the board is not properly installed or if the board is not connected to your PC,
Figure III-6 shows the Board not connected error message.

If the board is connected to your PC, the software will detect it and display a board connected message on the
status bar present in the bottom left corner of the GUI, along with the device status.

Once you get the board connected message, you are ready to power up the device.
Note: The mini-USB cable connection is mandatory during the operation of the device. Do not remove this cable
when the PMIC is powered up.
Recommended test equipment
The CSPM3002 applications board has an inbuilt current and voltage sense which works with the GUI to show
the current and voltages of all the blocks in CSPM3002, this enables the user to use the applications board
with only


A 5V 2A adapter/ mobile charger with a micro-USB cable
A 4.2V Li-ion/Poly battery preferably over 1500mAh
If a user intents to use the board for characterization of CSPM3002 then it is recommended to use following
Instruments:



A 6.5 Digit DMM
A Digital Oscilloscope
A 0-6V 3A power supply
Board settings
For the proper initialization of the board, please ensure the following jumper connections are present on the
board.






Powering up the board
There are two ways to power up the CSPM3002 EVB

The 5V 2A micro USB cable will dock to the J1 connector in the applications board, please refer the
applications board reference to find the connector.
The 4.2V Li-ion/Poly battery (which comes with a 5pin relimate connector) docks to the connector
J25, which also has a silk screen marking VBAT_p on it. Pin 1,2 is the positive end of the battery, Pin
4,5 is the negative end of the battery, Pin 3 can be connected to a thermistor on the battery if it is
used, it can be No-Connect also. After connecting the power supplies the user will notice the green
LED’s on the left side of the board glowing to indicate the power rails, alternatively the user can use
the Device Status? , Button under the General tab to read the device status which will be displayed in
status bar of the GUI. The status will be ACTIVE ON if the PMIC has completed its boot up sequence

Note: If all LED’s are flickering with a period of 1second, please go to the controls tab and toggle the ENABLE
signal to get the device in ACTIVE ON state.

IV. Using the GUI
The Applications board comes with voltage and current sense for all its power rails, the EVB also provides user with
an option to load different PM blocks using on-board resistive loads. Load can be turned ON/OFF using GUI. Various
feature of the GUI are explained in the forthcoming subsections. All information from the device will be shown in the
status bar, which is located in the bottom left corner of the GUI.
General tab
The General tab provides the overview of the PMIC, its device status, the applications board status information is
available through the General tab
Device Status
This button enables the user to read the device status of the PMIC. Various device states of the device are
RTC state

Adapter current
The on board ADC is used to measure the current and voltage of the VIN_ADP pin of the PMIC. This feature can be
used by clicking on the measure button in the general tab.
Controls
The controls tab can be used to control the digital Input pins of the PMIC.



ENABLE – PMIC Enable
SLEEP – Sleep mode enable
USB SUSPEND – Suspend mode enable
Please refer the datasheet for the detailed description of the input pins in CSPM3002.
Bucks
This page enables the measurement, load and output programmability of CSPM3002’s DC-DC converters.
Voltage and current measurements
All the voltages can be measured using the measure button in the tab; this will update the output voltages and load
current of the DCDC converters.
The user can load the DCDC converters using the Load button in the same window. To see the load current after load
click the measure button.

Output programmability
All Step down DCDC converters in CSPM3002 supports Dynamic Voltage scaling, the desired output voltage can be
selected from the interactive dropdown menu in the window, and then clicking on the SET BUCK x DVS (where x
stands for the Converter name) will change the output voltage of the corresponding DCDC converter.

LDOs
CSPM3002 has 7 programmable LDO’s all of which can be measured using the on board ADC, using the measure
button on the LDO tab.
The LDO’s can also be loaded using on board resistors using the Load button beside the corresponding LDO names.

Fuel Gauge
CSPM3002 has an inbuilt Coulomb counter and ADC to measure Battery Voltage and temperature. Cirel Systems has
developed an algorithm for predicting remaining capacity/ Depth of Discharge of the battery. This algorithm can
reside in System/Apps processor. In CSPM3002-EVB this algorithm is residing in a microcontroller
To enable the use of Fuel Gauge, the user has to click the INITIALIZE FUEL GAUGE button. This initializes the fuel
gauge algorithm which is implemented in the microcontroller on the Applications board. To keep running the fuel
gauge algorithm, click on the UPDATE FG button.
The algorithm has flexibility to update the battery capacity on the fly.

Note: Do not disconnect the applications board with the fuel gauge running to avoid run time errors.
Backlight (WLED) and USB Boost
CSPM3002 sports two DCDC Boost converters, one for the Backlight white LED and one for the USB OTG and HDMI
power rail requirements.
WLED Boost
CSPM3002 has an integrated backlight driver with PWM dimming, current matching and supports a wide range of
output voltages up-to 24V (6 LEDs in series). It supports various fault detection features. The backlight is mimicked
by the use of 90 angle mounted LED’s on the leading edge of the applications board. These can be turned on using
the Green button under the WLED heading. The dimming can be controlled by the WLED Current drop down menu.

Important: It is always mandatory to connected Battery (VBAT-p) supply before the use of Backlight since the power
supply for the backlight is taken directly from battery.
Note: It is recommended to set the WLED Current to lower values to prevent visual discomfort while turn on.
USB Boost
The USB Boost is a fixed 5V boost converter which uses Battery supply which varies between 3.0V-4.2V to a fixed
5.0V output that can support loads of up to 700mA. The USB Boost can be turned on using the Green button under
the USB Boost heading. The measured output of USB Boost can be seen in the Bucks tab using the measure function
of the GUI.
Important: It is always mandatory to connected Battery (VBAT-p) supply before the use of Backlight since the
power supply for the backlight is taken directly from battery.
Note: It is recommended to power down both Backlight and USB Boost before the removal of battery supply from the
board.

The load drawn from the above mentioned connectors will be measured by the measure feature of the GUI in
the corresponding tab’s.
USB Device Enumeration
The USB Boost of CSPM3002 is tried and tested on standard USB 2.0 devices, to demonstrate this feature on the
CSPM3002 applications board connect you USB 2.0 device to the USB A Female connector on the board- J4.
Connect a mini USB cable at J2 and connect it to PC.
When the USB Boost is OFF, you will not see any USB 2.0 device enumerated on your PC.
When the USB Boost is ON, a new device will enumerate on your PC. The voltage and current drawn from the
USB Boost in this condition can also be measured using the measure button in the Bucks tab of the GUI.

IX. Troubleshoot
The commonly faced issues are stated below, if the issue is not seen in this section please contact us.
1.
GUI prompting “APPS BOARD NOT DETECTED”
GUI prompting Board not detected is when the device drivers are not installed correctly on the system.
Please refer Chapter III. for detailed steps on how to install the drivers.
2.
Device state reads boot up and LEDs are blinking at a low frequency
Please go to the Controls tab, turn on the ENABLE button, if it is already on, please turn off and turn on
again.
3.
Device manager shows an unknown device
Unknown device is shown because device drivers are not installed, please unplug the board and follow the
steps given in Chapter III. to correctly install the driver. Try connecting the EVB to an alternative port.
Also there should be a RED indicator LED which glows once the board is connected to the computer. If the
RED LED does not glow please check the “Board settings section” in Chapter III. to ascertain if the board
setting are correct.
4.
GUI Looks staggered or unarranged
The GUI looking staggered or unarranged is due to the text size being bigger on windows, to rectify this
right click on your desktop(Win7/8/8.1) and select Screen Resolution, in the Screen Resolution window
click on the Make text and other items larger or smaller link and select Smaller-100% option.
