T
he 7th Annual Cathedral Golf Open was held on
Friday, September 17, 2010 at The Elkridge Club in
Baltimore. Cathedral Open Co-Chairs, John Boote
‘81 and Pat Franklin, joined with other Cathedral parents and
friends to enjoy a day of camaraderie and healthy competition
on the links.
The school community is grateful to the McGeady Family,
our Major Sponsor, for their continued generous support.
Before a sold out crowd of golfers, our Rector, Monsignor J. Bruce
Jarboe, gave a blessing to start the day’s round of golf.
Sr. Josephann Wagoner, SSND was also on hand to wish the
golfers well. Players purchased raffles and mulligans, enjoyed
lunch, and headed to their designated starting position for the
shotgun start at 12:30 pm.
Throughout the day, golfers enjoyed blue skies and pleasant
temperatures of a perfect late summer day. Golfers tried their
luck on a hole in one for a car, but unfortunately there were

no lucky winners that day! Afterward, golfers gathered on the
outside patio to enjoy hearty hors d’oeuvres and cocktails.
Golfers dined on sliced beef, crab dip, chicken skewers, and
other delicious appetizers provided by the Elkridge Club.
Raffle winners were pleased to win a variety of fabulous prizes
during the dinner.
We appreciate the support of our Event Sponsors: All Risks,
LLC (Beverage Sponsor) and DavCo Restaurants (Longest
Drive Sponsor). The School of the Cathedral also sincerely
appreciates the support of our Hole and Birdie Sponsors, and
for all of the contributions by the local establishments. With the
help of their generous donations, our outing was a success!
The Cathedral Open Golf Classic raised over $10,000 for
the school. Many thanks to John Boote ‘81 and Pat Franklin and
their committee: Mike McGeady, John Blaze, Mark Weigman,
and the Development Office. Thanks go out to our volunteers
Emily McGeady, Maria Boote, Michele Franklin, Paula Harmon, Julie
Halvorsen, Kristen Rudolph, Janet Stamas, and Kathleen Willis for
helping out the day of the event. This was a great communitybuilding event that generated funds for The School of the
Cathedral Endowment Fund and tuition assistance. ■

Congratulations goes to …
Winning First Place Gross Team
The Winning 1st Place Gross Team members were Dave Willis,
Tom O’Neil, Scott Rogers, and Andy Tucker. Each winner was
awarded a silver bowl engraved with Cathedral Open. The team
received a $300 credit voucher to use at Elkridge Pro Shop. Their
names are also engraved on the Cathedral Open Golf Classic
trophy, which is displayed in the school’s gym foyer.
The 2nd Place Gross Team members were Jeff Harris, Doug Smith,
Jim Barry, and Sean Darby. The team received a $200 Pro Shop
credit voucher.

Closest to the Pin
Our “Closest to the Pin” major contest winner, Hugh Mohler,
received $500 cash on hole #13. Three other golfers won $50
Pro Shop credit for coming closest to the pin on hole #4 – Jamie
Pezzulla, hole #8 – Jeff Dobrzykowski, and hole #17 – Mark
Mobley. ■

n Friday September 10, 2010, the sixth grade
students were welcomed into Middle School by
the seventh and eighth grade students. Together
they attended a prayer service led by Fr. Silvester
Kim and Mrs. Jennifer Keller, 6B Teacher. The theme for the
prayer service was “Being a Light.”
Afterward, they enjoyed
breakfast in the cafeteria where
the new sixth graders learned if
they were on the Stars or Stripes
team. This year, the team
captain for the Stars is Maddy
Perry (8A); the team captain for
the Stripes is Bridget Lavelle (8A).

he School of the Cathedral gathered on a beautiful afternoon in
mid-September to celebrate the induction of a new Commissioner
General of the Student Council and its officers. Jack Scaletta ’10, former
Commissioner General, presently a freshman at Loyola, handed the
gavel over to Owen Melia (8A) to assume his new role. As Commissioner General,
Owen will lead the school this year and act on suggestions and ideas of the student
body for the enhancement of the school community. ■

for a presentation by Mrs. Carol
Haislip , from the International
School of Protocol. Students were
instructed on how to improve
their communication skills in daily
life. Eighth grade students also
learned appropriate interviewing
techniques, as they prepare for
their high school interviews.
Mrs. Haislip used role-playing to
illustrate ways students should
communicate with adults and
their peers, as well as proper
behavior to interact with those
within and outside our Cathedral
community. ■

“I Am
Special”
Pet Blessing
Celebrated by
the First Grade
O
n Friday, October 15, 2010, the
First Graders enjoyed “I Am
Special” with a presentation in
the Parish Center. They created
self-portraits on the computer that were
printed onto t-shirts! They also worked very
hard creating their own “I Am Special”
books. They shared these books with their
parents during a wonderful breakfast in
the cafeteria immediately following the
presentation. It was a memorable day for
our special first graders! We thank our 1st
grade teachers, Mrs. Debbie Wagner, Mrs.
Kate English, and Ms. Stephanie Bechtel and
their assistants: Mrs. Peggy Ilardo, Ms. Megan
Bergin, and Mrs. Julie Mainello, for their
direction with this ceremony. ■
“I Celebrated
Am Me”
by
the Second Grade
T
he second grade classes celebrated
“I Am Me” with a para-liturgy
on Friday, October 22nd. They
presented self-portraits they had
created in art class and read descriptions
of themselves completed in English class.
They also sang four terrific songs directed
by our music teacher, Mr. Jon Mathis.
Their parents were quite proud of their
accomplishments. We thank our 2nd grade
teachers, Mrs. Jennifer Harrington and
Mrs. Tara Macia, for their work in
coordinating the event. ■

Meet & Greet
T
he last Monday of each month, a parishioner family hosts a
meet and greet at their home to have an opportunity to meet
with the clergy staff, Monsignor J. Bruce Jarboe and
Fr. Pete Literal, in a more relaxed setting. We thank the Knotts,
Frankes, Bairds, Goldsboroughs and the Merwins for their generosity in
opening their homes for these small gatherings. ■
Office of
Development,
Parish and
School
I
n the summer of 2010, the parish
and school development offices
combined under one department
to handle all aspects of school and
parish development. The office consists
of a Director of Parish and School, Mary
Miller, who oversees both areas, with an
Associate Director of Parish, Maureen
Costello, and an Associate
Director of School, Haley Franklin.
The Development Advisory Board and
Stewardship Committee provide
support and meet regularly throughout
the year to aid development efforts. The Development Office manages
the Planned Giving efforts for the
parish and the school, which provides
income for the Preservation Trust for
the church and for the School Endowment Fund. The department handles
the Annual Parish Stewardship
Campaign, the parish-wide Capital
Campaign, coordinates the school’s
Annual Fund Campaign, and produces
the Annual Report.
Several events that are sponsored
through the office are the 50th
Anniversary Bull and Oyster Roast
2010, Cathedral Golf Open, Parish
Ministry Day/Fall Fest, the School of
the Cathedral Open House, Grandparents and Special Friends Day,
Class Masses, Annual Phone-a-thon,
Meet and Greets, Christmas Tree
Lighting and Caroling Night, and the
Welcome Summer Picnic in June.
Since its inception in 1991, the
school’s development office has
sponsored several “All-Class” and “50+
Year” alumni reunions. It publishes a
newsletter (3 times a year), The Report
Card and maintains all alumni relations.
Other activities include advertising; public relations; grant writing;
and, planning, developing, and
marketing all fundraising activities.
The Development Office strives to
maintain a high profile for the parish
and school throughout the immediate
and surrounding communities. ■
Plans for the 2011 Cathedral Ball are well
underway! The Blue Jean Ball will be held
on April 16, 2011 at the Evergreen House.
Wear your favorite denim and join us for an
evening of dinner and cocktails, dancing,
live and silent auctions, and FUN while
supporting the School of the Cathedral.

Welcome New Staff
Mrs. Haley Franklin – Associate Director of Development
Haley Franklin comes to the Development Office at Cathedral
after having worked for several years in education and
the non-profit sector. After receiving her master’s degree
in nonprofit management, Haley left New York City for
Massachusetts to work as an Assistant Director of
Admissions, coach and dorm parent at Lawrence Academy.
Most recently, Haley was a Teen & Young Adult Program Specialist for the
Immune Deficiency Foundation in Towson. Having attended the School of the Cathedral in the 5th grade before
her family moved to Texas, Haley is very excited to be back on Charles Street!
She is a parishioner at Corpus Christi and enjoys running, trips to the beach, and
spending time with her husband, Charles, and their golden retriever, Dempsey. Mrs. Maureen Costello –
Associate Director of Development, Parish
Maureen has been employed in the Development Office
at the Cathedral since February of 2008. Her job began as
Administrative Assistant to the Director, and as of August
of this year she has been promoted to Associate Director of
Parish Development. Previous to her employment here, she
held a position as Store Manager at Greetings and Readings for nine years.
Along with her family, Maureen was a member of the Cathedral Parish and was
married here in the mid-70’s. She returned as a parishioner last year. Maureen has
four children and one granddaughter. She enjoys her time with her family and is
loving being back in the Cathedral community not only through her work here, but
also as a parishioner. ■
Mrs. Peggy Ilardo – 1A Assistant
Mrs. Ilardo is most grateful to be working at the School of
the Cathedral after being at home raising her 5 children. She
previously taught second grade Religious Education and has
been a substitute teacher. Peggy and her husband, Harry, are
parishioners of the Cathedral and along with their children greatly
enjoy being a part of the Cathedral community!

Congratulations to Susie Watson,
Custodian, 20 years
M
rs. Susie Watson celebrates 20 years of service
to our school this year. “Miss Susie” began
working at the School of the Cathedral in 1990
cleaning throughout the school building. When
Susie began, Sr. Eileen Weisman was Principal and Mrs. Muriel
Bradley was the Asst. Principal. You can always see Susie in the
hallways cleaning with her co-worker and good friend
Mr. Gerard Britton.
Susie says, “I love my job
because it’s nice being around all
the kids and the friendly staff and
faculty each day while I do my work!
I am kept busy so my day goes by
quickly. I also enjoy working with
Gerard — we enjoy a good laugh
together!”
When Susie is not busy at
Cathedral, she enjoys bingo,
shopping, and getting a good sale
at Kohl’s, and spending time with
her great-grandchildren: D-Asia, 11 yrs. old, Justin, 3 yrs. old
and Kayla, 2 yrs. old. Susie has three grown children, Linda,
Jacqueline, and Anthony. She has five grandchildren: Andre,
Crystal, Tavon, Shantel, and Breyon.
Susie says her favorite season is fall and her favorite holiday
is Christmas! She especially enjoys seeing the students who
come back after they graduate. The school holds a special place
in her heart after so many years.
Thank you, Miss Susie, for all of your years of service to the
School of the Cathedral. ■

he students, faculty and staff of the School of the
Cathedral celebrated the school’s 50th anniversary
with a week of festivities beginning on Monday,
October 4th. A prayer service was led by the Student
Council in the gym at the start of their day. Student Council
leaders then handed out 50th anniversary ribbons and green
and gold shoelaces to school students and faculty to wear in
celebration of this special time.

On Tuesday, October 5th, students collected at least
50 items per grade level to donate to Our Daily Bread. Dr. T.L.
Llewellyn and his wife Megan collected and dropped off the
casseroles, along with donations of sugar, teabags, sandwich
bags, sugar, paper towels, salt/pepper, napkins, ketchup, mayo,
mustard, and cooking spray from the students.
On Wednesday, October 6th at a special Wednesday
Assembly presentation, each grade level contributed an item to
be put in the time capsule/chest, donated by Courtney Miller ’01,
which will be opened again 25 years from now in the year 2035.
The capsule is stored in a special place in the school, known to
Sr. Josephann and a few select members of the faculty.

the school first opened its doors on Charles Street.
On Thursday, October 7th, we celebrated Legacy Day for
current school parents, alumni, and faculty who were able to
view classic pictures in the school foyer of days gone by on
Mulberry Street and Amberly Way.
On Friday, October 8th the School of the Cathedral
celebrated Spirit Day! The Mustang Mascot visited the school,
students wore green and gold, and in the afternoon the students
and teachers had their own special class activity. Students also
enjoyed popsicles as a treat, while volunteers set up the huge
bull roast tent!
On Saturday, October 9th, the school community joined
together with anticipation and excitement as they celebrated
50 years at a Mass held at the Cathedral, celebrated by
Bishop Denis Madden and concelebrated by our Rector, Msgr.

evening! In the foyer,
school memorabilia
was displayed, along
with the completed time capsule and alumni pictures.
CASPA President Julie Halvorsen worked closely with Coyle
Studios to enlarge and reproduce original school photos,
which are now displayed in the school foyer. Upon entering
the cafeteria, guests could have their picture taken with an
actual SSND sister and former teacher in the 1960s by posing
in a life-size cut-out of a student seated at her desk with the
Sister leaning over the desk teaching a lesson. Rector Emeritus,

P.A. Our Honorary Chairperson for the event was The Most
Reverend Archbishop Edwin F. O’Brien, S.T.D., D.D.
Sheehan Stanwick Burch ’93 helped coordinate the participants
for the Mass. A bagpipe player played before Mass and was
stationed outside the school as over 700 guests were welcomed to
enjoy the Bull and Oyster Roast. Guests mingled with one another
from 6-10pm under the spacious tent, provided by Loane Bros. on
Newman Field.
A delicious deluxe menu fare was offered by Bear Bros.
Caterers of pit beef and ham, a raw oyster bar, oyster stew,
Maryland crab soup, Italian sausages with green peppers/
onions, fried chicken, a Mexican station, salads, and desserts.
Herman’s Bakery provided two celebratory cakes, one for the
School of the Cathedral’s 50th anniversary at the Charles
Street location and one for the original school on Mulberry
Street, founded in 1871.
Peggy Castle, of IDJ4FUN, provided fantastic music for
the crowd who spent time on the dance floor when they weren’t

evening and had a chance at a big win! Pickett Riehl ’48 and Phil
Brady ’48 handled the under-over dice game while the Knights
of Columbus manned the Big 6 wheel. Guests also enjoyed
spirited games of cornhole in the cafeteria. We thank parent
and current staff member Jane Blusiewicz and committee
member Will Macsherry ’84 for taking care of the race, raffle,
and basket finances during the event.
Alumni and friends of the School of the Cathedral enjoyed
a presentation created by Patrick Gormley ’85. The presentation
featured photographs from the old school on Mulberry Street
up until today here at our Charles Street location, and included
trivia questions throughout the presentation. At each table,
guests noticed the unique and special centerpieces created
by Helen Kopits Hiser ’73 that were constructed from paperback
and Sister Josephann Wagoner shared a few words to kick off
the evening and welcome guests.
Kristen Rudolph and Mary Francioli, Class Basket Chairs,
did a fabulous job in creating rather unique and charming
K-8 class baskets from the donated items and money from
each class, which were raffled through a silent auction. Our
guests could bid on the Maryland, My Maryland basket with
gift certificates to local
seafood restaurants, crab
pillow, spices, wines
and traditional “hey
hon” bouffant hairdo
earrings, and MD shore
pictures to the Let’s Go
Preppy Basket that had a

robe, purse, an Etcetera
scarf, and Vera Bradley back sack. Of course, there were also a
Ravens theme and a Spa basket which were very popular!
There were plenty of games throughout the evening.

which offered a variety of live action horse races projected on

Suarez-Murias Miller ’73 says,
“I am thrilled to have so many alumni, parents, and friends
of the School of the Cathedral gathered under the tent to
celebrate this special 50th Anniversary milestone for the
school. This event was made possible through the combined
efforts of the Bull and Oyster Roast planning committee,
consisting of both alumni and parents who met monthly
for the past year and a half. Many thanks go out to these
dedicated volunteers for donation of their time, talent, and
treasure. Through the overall efforts of all our volunteers
and supporters of the School of the Cathedral, who took the
time to work together to bring the evening to fruition, we are
pleased to share we have generated over $18,300 for the School
of the Cathedral Endowment Fund.”
Sr. Josephann Wagoner, Principal and Rector Monsignor J. Bruce
Jarboe shared, “The interest and enthusiasm in this event are a
tribute not only to our alumni, but also to the parishioners and
friends of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen and the School
of the Cathedral of Mary Our Queen. The church and school
have stood as the centerpiece of this community for over
