Colorimetric Methods
These tests are generally simple and easy to run—the basic concept is
one of adding a specific reagent which reacts with the analyte being
tested to create a color. The intensity of this color is then measured.
You can visually compare the intensity of the color developed against
a known standard with our Aqua Comparator or Comparator 705.
Or—for even better accuracy, you can measure the color using a colorimeter (see our SC400, 942 or MC500) or our SP600 Spectrophotometer. As you will see, Orbeco-Hellige has a full line of
colorimetric water quality tests.
Titrations
Titrations are simple chemical tests in which a solution or tablet of
a known concentration is added slowly to a sample of unknown
concentration. At a given point, (called the end point) the color of
the sample will rapidly change, such as from red to blue. An easy
calculation will then allow determination of the concentration of
the analyte. Orbeco’s “MiniKits” (Page 8) are convenient, innovative
titration kits that use tablets as the titrant.
Electrochemical Methods
Some parameters in water such as pH, ORP and Conductivity can
be measured using an electrochemical meter. These are precise instruments which (in effect) measure the flow of electricity through
a water sample. In addition, other electrochemical instruments
can measure Dissolved Oxygen in the sample using membrane
technology. Orbeco’s line of Electrochemical Instruments can be
found starting on Page 76 of this catalog.

Respirometric Methods
BOD is a measurement of the oxygen update (or demand) of
microbiological organisms in a wastewater sample. OrbecoHellige offers an innovative product called the Oxi700™ which
allows precise BOD measurement without error prone sample dilutions. In addition, it can start providing BOD data within 1
day of initiating the test. The Oxi700™ can be found on Page 72 of
this catalog and is the perfect tool for process control purposes.
Turbidimetric Methods
Turbidity is basically a measurement of the “cloudiness” of the
water. Sources of water cloudiness may include dissolved organic and inorganic materials. To meet US EPA guidelines, turbidity detection has to be done by measuring the diffraction
of a white light source at a 90 degree angle. Orbeco offers several different turbidimeters, starting on Page 68.

The MINIKITS are designed for rapid water testing. Most of
the MINIKITS are based on titrimetric methods.
Tablet Count Method:
In the tablet count method, the liquid titration solution and
indicator are replaced by Orbeco-Hellige tablet reagents. A
specified number of tablets are added to a defined sample
volume until a chemically induced color change takes place.
The concentration of the parameter being measured is calculated from the number of tablets required. The measuring range can be expanded by varying the sample
volume.
Arsenic Test Kit
The Arsenic Test Kit is able to accurately
detect very low ranges of arsenic, and can be
used to determine the presence of arsenic in
drinking water.
The kit includes enough materials to perform
100 tests.

Speed Test:
The speed test is based on reverse titration. After adding
a reagent tablet to a calibrated test tube, the water sample
is added slowly until the color of the solution changes (i.e.
from red to blue). The user can then read the result of the
liquid level.
Yes/No Test:
A Yes/No test can determine if a specific ingredient is present in the water and/or if its concentration is higher or
lower than a defined level.

Meets WHO requirements for drinking
water. This Test Kit is able to detect levels
as low as 0.005 mg/L Arsenic.
To minimize the potential danger to the
user, the Test Kit does not use a highly
toxic lead acetate for sulfide removal.
Instead, the removal of interfering sulfide
ions is integrated into the test procedure.
To avoid irritation of the skin, the acid
substance is in the form of a solid.
The unbreakable plastic reaction bottle
is safe and convenient for on-site testing
purposes.
During the test procedure, the developing arsine gas is tightly sealed
inside the reaction bottle. Unable to
escape, it cannot harm the user.

Turbidity Method:
A two-section calibrated tube is filled with sample and a reagent tablet is added. The reagent creates a level of turbidity
that is proportional to the concentration of the parameter
being measured. The inner tube, which has a black dot on
its base, is lowered until the dot is obscured by the turbidity.
The result is read from the water level in the inner tube.

The SC400 is Orbeco-Hellige‘s new series of rugged,
waterproof, single parameter colorimeters for laboratory or field testing. Available in a wide range of
parameters, the SC400 mainly uses powder pack and
tablet chemistries, ensuring accurate doses of reagents.
The instrument features a large, backlit display for
easy viewing of results, as well as a real time clock,
datalogging capabilities, and a user calibration mode
which allows the user to calibrate against prepared
standards.
Every SC400 comes complete with a battery, 3 sample

SC400 COD Set
The Orbeco-Hellige SC400 COD Set comes complete with everything you need
for COD analysis.
Simply add sample to the Orbeco-Hellige COD tube test vial, heat it in the
TR-125 Thermoreactor, and then analyze the sample using the SC400 Single
Parameter Colorimeter for COD.
The COD Set comes with the SC400 COD Colorimeter, 16 mm adapter, 25 tube
tests for both Low (0-150 mg/L) and Mid (0-1500 mg/L) Range COD analysis,

The MC500 is the Muti-Parameter Colorimeter from Orbeco-Hellige. This versatile instrument tests for a wide
range of water quality parameters from Alkalinity to Zinc, and its compact size makes it perfect for use in
either the field or laboratory.
Using Orbeco-Hellige‘s “Open Reagent System“ (which uses Powder PackTM, tablets, liquid, and ampoule
reagents), the MC500 features an industry-leading 6 LED photodetector array that allows the instrument to
conduct over 70 pre-programmed test methods and over 20 user defined methods.
Up to 1,000 data sets can be stored in the instrument‘s internal memory and transfered to a computer using

IRiM:
Data Transfer Module
The IRiM uses state-of-the-art infrared technology to transmit data from the MC500 Multi-Parameter Colorimeter to one of 3 optional interfaces. Users can choose to connect to a Computer, a USB printer or a
serial printer. The interface can be easily selected, and the choice is displayed by an LED function indicator.
The user can switch between the interfaces using a "Select" button.
The IRiM comes with the software necessary to begin quickly and easily transfering data to your computer.
As an option the data can be saved as an Excel spreadsheet or a .txt file. Measurement data can quickly be
printed out, using a specified USB or serial printer connected to the IRiM.

The SP600 is a single-beam spectrophotometer. The instrument performs a self-test as soon as it is turned
on, confirming proper operation and performance of all key components.
Using an innovative tungsten halogen lamp with flash function, the lamp is on only momentarily during the
measurement process, eliminating a warm-up period. An integrated Didymium-filter confirms the instrument
is working properly and assures data integrity.
Using a unique holographically-produced monochromator, the light is split into special ranges, where a
moveable mirror ensures that light of the desired proper wavelength is focused automatically as it passes
through the water sample.
The light not absorbed by the sample travels to the silicon photodiode detector. The signal is then evaluated
by a microprocessor and shown as a direct-read result in the display.

An innovative, multifunctional, sample chamber eliminates
the need for most adapters. Round vials measuring 16 mm
and 24 mm in diameter and rectangle cells with pathlengths
from 10 to 50 mm do not require any adapter.

Wavelength Scanning and User Calibrations. A wavelength
scan can be performed over a user-defined interval between
330 and 900 nm. With this function, an operator can measure
standards of different concentrations to create user calibrations of up to 10 order polynominal. New Methods. New test methods are always being added.
Users can easily add new methods to their instrument by
downloading free software from our website.

Data Logging and Handling. An RS-232 connection allows
for the instrument to be connected with a PC or printer. Each
data point is recorded with the date, time, operator number,
measuring range, and method number. The instrument is
able to store up to 1,000 data points in its internal memory.
Low Maintenance. The only required maintenance is the
eventual replacement of the halogen bulb. Users will find this
to be quick and easy, as the bulb is conveniently located at the
back of the SP600 -- no tools required!

Measurement Methods. The user chooses the desired method either from the alphabetical method list or by entering a numerical code. The SP600 can easily provide additional information such as the required vial, reagent type,
and measuring range by using the function keys. The date
and time are shown in the display by pressing the “clock“ button. The SP600 automatically selects the correct wavelength.
•
Zero Test. The zero test is performed with the water sample
by pressing the ZERO key.
•
Countdown Function. Some tests require a waiting period after a reagent is added to the sample. The SP600‘s countdown function keeps the time for you by continuously displaying the remaining time. With ten seconds left, an alarm
alerts the user, and measurment begins automatically. The result is then shown on the display. The user can turn off the
countdown function to allow rapid completion of a series of
samples.

AC or Battery Powered. The SP600 can be run on battery power with an available battery pack.

Each tablet is hermetically sealed within an individual
aluminum foil pocket, protecting against environmental conditions. This packaging keeps each
tablet in perfect condition, right up until the time it is
needed by the user.
Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) for all reagents are also

Test tablets remain the most consistent and reliable reagent format available, routinely outperforming other

All of our DPD reagents are produced on the basis of
international standard methods and the ISO standard method.
The chemicals are of crystalline white nature.
If a reagent (tablets or powder) is not white but has turned
a grey/brown or purple color, it has deteriorated. DPD liquid reagents should be colorless when fresh and may turn a brownish color if the reagent has deteriorated. The use of
deteriorated products must be avoided as they will give false
results.

Each tablet is contained within an individually formed
foil cup, lined with the latest aluminum composite material, and guaranteeing product performance.
As a result of improved sealing efficiency, the blister pack
has been reduced in size to 91 x 34 mm making them
even more convenient for storage and shipping.
‘BT’ is added to the end of the part number to identify the
new style of packaging. (For example – RT106-0BT).
There are no safety risks if the tablets are used in line with
the instructions supplied.

Orbeco-Hellige‘s tube tests enable
the user to easily perform highly sensitive and precise water testing.
As a rule, liquid reagents are
comprised of several components that need to be added to the sample in a certain
order. As both the size and the
number of drops have a decisive
effect on the color complex result,
the reagents need to be added
with a high degree of precision.
The shelf life of liquid reagents
is reduced by temporary contact
with oxygen when the bottle is
opened, as well as by improper
storage environments (presence
of sunlight or high temperatures).
Provided that the bottles are stored within the temperature
range 43°F to 50°F, the OrbecoHellige DPD and Phenol Red solutions can be used for a period
of one year from the production
date.
The fast and easy use of Powder
Packs has made them extremely popular for water testing applications in many countries throughout the world.
The Orbeco-Hellige Powder Packs
provide users with a real alternative to existing measurement systems.
The Powder Packs are produced
with the same high quality standards as our tablet reagents.
Parameters from aluminum and
chlorine to sulphate are just some
of the well-known tests that are
included in the Powder Pack range.
Their chemical properties are suitable for use with Hach-Colorimeter-Systems.
Using tube tests measurements
are considerably faster and easier,
particularly in the case of standard
and serial tests.
Tube tests contain a precisely measured amount of reagent, thereby
avoiding the presence of extra chemicals and optimising test safety.
Up to six different measuring ranges
are available for the various tests.
The tubes are made of special optical
glass with a 16 mm diameter. They are
supplied in a storage and dispatch
box together with the digestion or auxiliary reagents. This packaging unit
contains 24 or 25 reaction vials and up
to 2 zero vials for photometer system
calibration.

The TR125 Thermoreactor is for chemical digestion of samples that require it, such as in the determination of COD,
TOC, Total Phosphate and Total Nitrogen.
The required temperatures and reaction times are pre-programmed, and easy to select by using the keypad. Users
can pre-select reaction times of 30, 60 and 120 minutes or can set it to operate continuously. When digestion is
complete, the reactor automatically turns off and will sounds an alarm.
The Chemical Oxygen Demand (COD) test is widely used as a measure of organic contamination by determing
the quantity of oxygen required for oxidation of reduced species including organic matter, in a water sample
using a specific oxidizing agent, temperature and time reduction. COD testing is more reliable and is preferred
to BOD testing as test results are more reproducible and are ready in two hours (or less) rather than 5 days. In
addition, COD testing is a better indicator of organic pollutants in industrial wastewater containing cyanides
and heavy metals. COD testing affords rapid response to changing conditions before critical problems develop.
The TR125 COD reactor is fitted with 24 holes for 16 mm diameter vials.

The TB200TM Portable Turbidimeter from Orbeco-Hellige, Inc. This instrument allows fast and easy turbidity measurement in both the field and in the laboratory.
Using a “white light” source and 90o detection, the TB200 meets the USEPA specifications for turbidity measurement

The Orbeco-Hellige sensor system is
a 6 sample system that allows precise
measurements of BOD based on the
manometric principle. Manometric
respirometers relate oxygen uptake
to the change in pressure caused
by oxygen consumption while
maintaining a constant volume. The
integral pressure sensors,make it
unnecessary to use mercury for
pressure measurements.
Waster Water
Measuring ranges and sample volumes
The result is a pressure drop in the
system, which is directly proportional
to the BOD value and is measured by
the Orbeco-Hellige BOD sensor. The
BOD level is then displayed directly in
mg/l.
The BOD values are stored in the
sensor memory and can be viewed
on the large-format display at any
time without the need for time
consuming conversion using
factors. This means that
test series that end on a
weeknd can be evaluated
during the following week.
The measurement period is userselectable between 1 and 28
days to suit the application. While
short measurement periods are
useful for scientific applications,
standard BOD measurements
typically extend over a period of 5 days – and manometric
determination of OECD, for example,
generally takes place over a period of
28 days.
Oxi700 BOD System
The system includes:

environment in a closed vessel
under conditions of constant
temperature and agitation. Carbon
dioxide produced metabolically by
the bacteria is chemically bound by
the potassium hydroxide solution
contained in the seal cup in the bottle.
The BOD level of a sample depends on the quantity of organic
matter present, which can vary considerably. The OrbecoHellige Oxi700 is calibrated for the various sample volumes and
the corresponding measuring ranges listed in the table below.
The overall measuring range of the system is 0 – 4000 mg/l.

BOD System
Temperature equalization is essential prior to
biological testing, as temperature has a major effect on
biological activity. BOD measurements, for example, are
always performed in a thermostatically controlled cabinet at
a temperature of 20°C.
Automatic start function
Variations in sample temperature prior to testing result in pressure variations within the measuring system
during the temperature equalization period in the
thermostatically controlled cabinet (if BOD measurement
is to take place at 20°C, for example). Such variations would
normally cause errors during manometric measurement. In
order to prevent such errors, the OXi700 BOD meter is equipped with an automatic start feature: measurement does not
start until the temperature in the samples is the same as
that in the thermostatically controlled cabinet. This rules
out the possibility of temperature (and pressure) fluctuations
that are not related to the manometric measurement.

measuring system records a measurement once every hour.
With a measuring period of 48 hours, the unit measures
and stores a BOD value once every 2 hours. If the measuring
period is between 3 and 28 days, one value is measured and
stored each day.
Current values and stored values may be called up at any time.

development of BOD over a period of 5 days is easily seen.

Tests with a glucose-glutamic acid solution having a known theoretical BOD have shown that the
variation is approximately 5% in the range of 50 to
100 mg/l BOD, and 3% for higher range. Minimum

Series 200 Electrochemistry Instruments
The Series 200 Electrochemistry instruments are
rugged, high performance handheld meters that are
specifically designed for use in both the laboratory
and the field.
pH combination electrodes made of glass and plastic, with a gel or liquid
electrolyte, as well as various temperature sensors (NTC 30kOhm, Pt1000) are
considered standard for pH meters.
Redox electrodes made of plastic with gel electrolyte and platinum tip have a
long life and are easy to use.
The galvanic, membrane-covered oxygen sensor with built-in temperature
sensor allows instant measurement without the need for time-consuming
polarization.
The sturdy, dirt-insensitive 4-pole conductivity measuring cell with graphite
electrodes is ideal for use in industrial process and waste water analysis. The
temperature range from 0 to 80 °C (32 to 176 oF) , for a short period up to 100°C,

The ScubaTM is an electronic, state-of-the-art pool tester. A sample of the
water is examined using colorimetric methods and the results are shown
in the high-precision digital display. The unit has a rugged housing
designed to be easy to hold (even with wet hands!) and is, of course, fully
waterproof.
The Scuba is available in two different versions, Scuba and Scuba+. Both
instruments test for Free and Total Chlorine, pH, and Cyanuric Acid. The
Scuba+ has the capability of also testing Alkalinity and Bromine.
The Scuba is supplied complete with specially formulated,
quick-dissolving reagent tablets identified by their white foil packaging.
It also has a convenient strap, so it can be safely hung in a storage area.
Easy 6-Step Operation:
Pool and Spa Products
1. Insert the 9V battery into the
Scuba and turn it on.
2. Push the “Mode“ button to
select the required test.
3. Open the cover on the left
hand side of the instrument,
and swing the Scuba
through the water until the
sample chamber is full.
4. Close the cover and press
the “Zero / Test“ button to
set the zero.
5. Open the cover, add the
appropriate tablet, close the
cover and gently shake the
instrument to dissolve the
tablet.
6. Press the “Zero / Test“ button
once more, and the display
will digitally show the results
in mg/L or as pH units.
