George Fenwick, our longtime Coordinator
of Office and Library, left us over the summer
to move on to other projects, his composer
commissions and professional writing
commitments among them.
I recall clearly when he dropped by the office
about ten years ago after moving back to Calgary
to be close to his aging mother following
several years of living on the West Coast. He
expressed an interest in the CMC and agreed
to come in occasionally as a volunteer. As we
were occasionally short-staffed at the time, he
then began to work for us on a paid, part-time
basis, and this gradually evolved into his working
full-time for our organization. Our patrons,
composers, and Voting Members all know
George as an affable, competent, and (as I like
to say) fearless individual! George, we will
miss you, but we wish you all the best in your
coming activities. God bless, and we will be
seeing you soon.

Malcolm Forsyth in his
Seventieth Year
Malcolm Forsyth
The Symphony Nova Scotia
celebrated the music of Malcolm
Forsyth during their Malcolm
Forsyth Festival at the end
of their 2006/2007 season.
This festival consisted of three
performances with the first
concert featuring his work
Valley of a Thousand Hills: for
Orchestra on February 27, 2007.
The second performance in this
festival on March 20th included
his Trumpet Concerto performed
by Richard Simoneau. The final
performance on May 1st featured
his Electra Rising: Concerto
for Violoncello and Chamber
Orchestra with his daughter
Amanda Forsyth as soloist.
Recently, Forsyth has
also been busy working on
numerous commissions; he was
commissioned by the CBC,
along with nine other Canadian
composers, to write a Prelude and
Fugue for piano to commemorate
Glenn Gould. In addition,
Forsyth’s solo piano piece,
entitled Preludio e Fuga Sul Nome
di Glenn Gould, was premiered
live-to-air by Peter Tiefenbach
on September 25th at the Glenn
Gould studio in Toronto. Forsyth
was also recently commissioned
by the Ritchie Trombone Choir
to write the piece Arcadian
Panoply for trombone choir and
soloist, which will be premiered
in Edmonton featuring Darren
George on trombone.
Currently, Forsyth is in the
process of writing a piece for
oboe, bassoon and piano for
the International Double Reed
Society for their conference in
Salt Lake City in April of 2008.
He is also in the process of
writing a piece entitled Trickster
Coyote, Lightening Elk for violin
and orchestra for the Canadian
violinist of Mohawk heritage,
Tara-Louise Montour of the
Virginia Symphony Orchestra.
Forsyth remains active as
a conductor with his position
as resident conductor of the
Mill Creek Colliery Band; they
will release their first CD in
November of 2007. Forsyth
has also been involved with
Edmonton’s Opera Nuova as a
conductor.
Calgary Opera Announces
New Opera Commission
Following the enormous
success of Filumena (2003) and
Frobisher (2007), Calgary Opera
announced the commission
of the company’s third fulllength opera, The Inventor, by
Juno Award winning composer
Bramwell Tovey, with a libretto
by John Murrell. The Inventor
tells the story of Sandy Keith,
nephew of famous Nova Scotian
brewer Alexander Keith, who
was a brewer, politician, good
samaritan, conman, husband
to two different women and a
possible terrorist. The Inventor
explores these mysteries of Sandy
Keith’s life, relating the story of a
quintessential conman in words
and music as lively and
intriguing as Keith and the times
in which he lived. The first of five
workshops for The Inventor begin
in Calgary in December 2007.
The Inventor will receive its world
premiere in Calgary in January
2011.
Five of a (New) Kind
Launches a New Direction
for the ECCS (excerpt from
an article written by Jerry A.
Ozipko)
July 31, 2007 was a very
special day in the twenty-two
year history of the Edmonton
Composers’ Concert Society. This
was only the third time that the
society has produced a concert
of orchestral works, and in this
particular instance, a series of
works for organ and strings, with
its own ensemble of musicians
under the direction of Jacek
Rogala. This was made possible
largely due to a special project
grant from the Canada Council
for the Arts, along with various
other donors and sponsors.
The concert was co-presented
under the auspices of the Royal
Canadian College of Organists
as part of the “Windspiration
Edmonton Organ Festival” held
at various venues across the city
between July 30 and August
3. In addition, the Canadian
Broadcasting Corporation
recorded the concert for future
national broadcasts of the
individual works on its FM
Radio programme “The Signal.”
The concert opened with
Piotr Grella-Mozejko
brought real life in four
dimensions to the oftenephemeral music. Songs of the
Seven Strings by Siaw Kin Lee
performed by organist Wendy
Markosky and Charles Stolte’s
Blumen for Organ and String
Orchestra featuring organist
Robert Zylstra were also included
on the program. The final work
on the program was In memoriam
Edward Boguslawski: Concerto per
organo ed archi by Piotr GrellaMozejko with organist Stillman

In Memoriam | Oscar Morawetz
Associate Composer Oskar Morawetz passed away on
Wednesday, June 13th at his retirement residence in
Toronto. Composer, pianist and teacher Oskar Morawetz
(b. Svetla nad Sazavou, Czechoslovakia, January 17,
1917) was a highly regarded and acclaimed music creator,
credited with an enviable career that spanned over 50
years. His music has been admired by prominent artists
such as Glenn Gould, Yo-Yo Ma, Maureen Forrester, and
Ben Heppner, who interpreted his works in numerous
performances across five continents.
With over 100 compositions to his credit, Morawetz’s
ouevre extends over a wide range, although the core of
his work was written for orchestra. In addition to being
one of Canada’s most performed composers, numerous
recordings of Morawetz’s music exist on such labels as
Columbia, RCA Victor, EMI, Centrediscs, and CBC. The
CBC issued a seven-disc anthology of his music in 1984,
and Centrediscs issued a Composer Portraits double CD
in 2002, containing representative pieces and an audio
documentary. A recording of Morawetz chamber works for violin with Canadian violinist Jasper Wood
is set for future release on the Centrediscs label.
Oskar Morawetz was often recognized for his outstanding achievements. In 1960, 1967, and 1974
he was awarded the Canada Council Senior Arts Fellowship for his contributions to Canadian music.
In 1987 Morawetz became the first composer to receive the Order of Ontario and in 1989 he received
the Order of Canada. SOCAN honoured him with the Jan V. Matejcek Concert Music Award in 1994
and the William Harold Moon Award in 1999.
Morawetz taught music theory and composition from 1946 until his retirement in 1982 as
professor emeritus at the University of Toronto.
A memorial service and reception in Oskar’s memory was held on June 28th in Walter Hall,
University of Toronto Faculty of Music. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the
Oskar Morawetz Entrance Scholarship in Music (University of Toronto, (416) 946-3580), to the
Parkinson’s Society of Canada (416) 227-9700) or the Regent Park School of Music (416) 364-8900).

Calgary organist James
Picken chose instruments for
the recording to suit each piece.
The Carthy Organ at the Jack
Singer Concert Hall allows vast
choices of timbre and contrast.

The Carthy Organ in Wyatt
Hall at Mount Royal College is
clear and enables the listener to
pick out the inner voices in Four
Short Hymn Settings by Gerald
Bales and Six Preludes on ShapeNote Tunes by Arthur Ward.
The organ at the Cathedral
Church of the Redeemer has
a rich acoustic with a woolly
hollow pedal. It is used to good
effect in Palestriniana by Piotr
Grella-Mozejko, David L.
McIntyre’s liturgical dance, The
Way of the Cross, and pieces by
Richard Eaton, Hugh Bancroft,
and Arthur Ward. A piece for
organ and percussion written by
Dwayne Engh and James Picken,
Primal Trinity, provides yet
another dimension.
In Memoriam | Gerhard Josef Wuensch
Associate Composer Dr. Gerhard Josef Wuensch passed away on Friday, June 8th at age
82. Composer, musicologist and pianist Gerhard Josef Wuensch completed a Doctor of
Philosophy from the University of Vienna in 1950 and a diploma in composition and
piano from the State Academy of Music in Vienna in 1952. Dr. Wuensch went on to
an extensive teaching career that started at Butler University in Indianapolis (1956-63).
Immigrating to Canada in 1964, Dr. Wuensch continued teaching at the University
of Toronto (1964-69), the University of Calgary (1969-73) and the University of
Western Ontario (1973-76), of which he was chairman of the theory and composition
departments. He resumed teaching at Western in 1991 and remained there as professor
emeritus until his passing.
A memorial service was held in London, Ontario on Tuesday, June 19th at First-St.
Andrew’s United Church. Memorial contributions to the Alzheimer Society would be
gratefully acknowledged.

David R. Scott
Winnipeg composer David R. Scott finished a
large-scale education project for the Winnipeg
Youth Symphony Orchestra and the Manitoba
Chamber Orchestra. The idea behind the project
was to compose a new piece for the combined
orchestras but have members of the Youth
Symphony help create it. Between November and
February, Scott worked with the young musicians
to conceive of and try out musical ideas. The
fruit of these musical brainstorming sessions was
a three-movement work entitled Dwarf Planets.
This work received its premier on April 18th
in Winnipeg with additional presentations in
Gretna, Manitoba on April 19th and 20th.
Scott recently completed his String Quartet #2
David Scott with an excerpt of the graphic score for his new work Dwarf Planets
which was commissioned by the Agassiz Music
