Andy’s doing
okay thanks
THE Otorohanga community is without its
well-respected police sergeant Andy Connors
who was seriously injured in a freak quad bike
accident last month.
On ANZAC Day afternoon – April 25 – Mr
Connors was attempting to rescue a calf from a
2m deep drain on his Trooper’s Rd farm when
he lost control of the bike and it crashed on
top of him.
In seconds the 54-year-old
was crushed against a rock
at the bottom of the drain
and left helpless in shallow running water.
“I made the mistake
of manoeuvring the
bike above the calf
without getting onto
the bike and doing it
properly,” Mr Connors
says from his Waikato
Hospital bed.
“I had released the handbrake and was moving it two or
three feet to my left when it shot back on
me. So I hit the accelerator to take it away from
me, but as soon as I did that I could no longer
reach the accelerator or the handbrake.
“Then once the bike had stopped going forward it came back and collected me, knocked me
into the drain and landed on top of me.
“It was my own fault and I have no-one else
to blame but myself.”
His wife Val, who was there when the accident
happened, immediately ran back to the couple’s
home and dialled 111.
dependency unit, a general ward and finally the
orthopaedics unit where he is currently.
INJURIES
Due to heavy sedation, it wasn’t until a day or
two later that Mr Connors learned the full extent
of his injuries.
He had major pelvic injuries, nearly completely severed his right leg, fractured
vertebrae, broken ribs and a dislocated left elbow.
“They’ve pinned me all
back together and the good
news is I still have movement in my toes,” says Mr
Connors.
“They’ve also had me
up standing in a special
rig which was quite painful so it’s a long road to
recovery from here, but at
least I’ve started it.”
Mr Connors can’t speak highly
enough of the emergency response
personnel who came to his rescue that fateful afternoon.
“I was in a pretty horrible position in the drain
and needed plenty of help, but they did a bloody
good job,” he says.
“My blood pressure was something ridiculous
like 41 over 29 so I was in a bad way.
“My core temperature had also dropped because I was lying in the stream but staying cool
might have been a blessing with all my injuries.
But I’m not sure.”
As of May 4, Mr Connors has served 29 years
with the New Zealand Police.
Two weeks on from the accident, he says the
support from all sections of the community has
been “phenomenal”.
“The prognosis is good so my main goal now
is simply to get walking again. It’s not going to
be easy, but it’s just something that I have to do.”
Waikato Police are currently looking at options to cover Mr Connor’s position.
“My main
goal now is
simply to
get walking
again.”
RESCUE SERVICES
Emergency services arrived within 45 minutes
including St John and volunteer firefighters who
carefully lifted Mr Connors out of the drain and
into the waiting rescue helicopter.
He was flown to Waikato Hospital to undergo extensive surgery before being admitted
to the intensive care unit, followed by the high

Today’s
change
MAY
CLASSIFED
SPECIALS
THEY say a change is as good as a
rest. But given that we have some 65
papers or so to go until the end of
2016, a rest is out of the question.
So we’ve decided on a fresh approach to our regular paper as well
as the North King Country Farmer
inside this issue.
Good things take time though, so
bear with us while we tweak here
and there in forthcoming issues.
Our regular advertisers were aware
a change was on the horizon as their
ads have been altered to suit our
new modular design.
‘New’ is a bit misleading. Most other
newspapers made a switch to modular design some years ago. But we’re
a little old fashioned here – a case of
“If it ain’t broke, why fix it?”
Still ... our former column sizing did
not sit well with those companies and
agencies that supply (camera ready)
modular designed ads.
Plus we were tired of the ol’ look
that’s been in place since 2010. No
doubt you were too. So... we’ve
made the shift. We hope you like it.

LOVELY LOBELIA: Tidy Gardens owner Katrina Christison and volunteers have re-hung 215
flowering baskets from Otorohanga’s shop verandahs for the winter season.
Getting the hang
of a new display
OTOROHANGA is assured of another blooming gorgeous display of main street hanging
baskets this winter.
For the 20th consecutive year Tidy Gardens’
owner Katrina Christison and a team of volunteers have hung 215 baskets from shop verandahs
in Maniapoto St.
The baskets are refreshed twice a year and are
presently planted with blue, purple, mauve, pink
and white lobelia which will burst into bloom in
a few weeks and flower for months.
“Visitors and residents love the baskets,” says
Mrs Christison.
“You see people taking photos every day of
the week and whenever you tell people you
come from Otorohanga, they’ll say ‘oh that’s
the town with the pretty hanging baskets in the
main street’.”
The hanging baskets are an Otorohanga Business Association initiative.
Mrs Christison favours impatiens for the
summer planting.
“They are very hardy and put on a great show,
like the lobelia,” she says.
“We give the baskets a good feed before they
go up which keeps them going through the season and they’re irrigated twice a day, especially
in summer.”
Mrs Christison says retailers enjoy having the
flowering baskets outside their shops.
“The baskets are a delightful add-on to our
town which make visitors stop.”

TORN UP: Waitomo District Council staff are frustrated at the level of damage vandals have caused at Centennial Park (above) and Brook Park (below) in Te Kuiti. PHOTOS SUPPLIED
Vandals hit park grounds again
VANDALISM of Te Kuiti’s Centennial Park
sports field during ANZAC Weekend has closed
the popular community facility for a month.
And, it’s not the first time Centennial Park
has been ripped up.
A similar level of destruction,
caused by cars doing ‘donuts’,
occurred at the park and
the Ward St Reserve in
August 2015.
That damage cost
more than $5500 to
repair.
This time however,
it’s going to cost $9390
which will come out of

damage to public property is significant and
should not be overlooked.
“The people who choose to carry out vandalism acts are behaving in an anti-social,
destructive way that is degrading the
quality of local living,” she says.
“People expect good quality, safe local living.
“That is a basic expectation for any community and what encourages
people to view Te Kuiti
positively as a place to
live, work and visit.”

OTHER VANDALISM
During the same week as the Centennial Park
vandalism, two other public areas in Te Kuiti –
the Mangaokewa Reserve (Viaduct) and Brook
Park – were similarly damaged.
A section of bollards pulled out at the Viaduct
have been replaced and council staff believe that
the affected grass areas at Brook Park will return
to normal over time.

FRUSTRATING
WDC group manager
Kobus du Toit says the vandalism is “very frustrating” for
the council and the community.
“It impacts on our delivery of services such
as mowing and maintenance, but it also affects
the community,” he says.
“The local winter sports season begins on
Saturday and the pitch damage impacts on the
teams using the field.
“At this stage we estimate that the field will be
unusable for about 4-6 weeks.

A Te Kuiti Police spokeswoman says investigations into the recent vandalism are ongoing.
“If anyone does see anything it is crucial to

vehicles,” she says.
“That is the best way for us to catch these offenders rather than being called after the fact.”

Handful of nominees
for citizens awards
TOP RECIPIENT
Piopio resident Sheryl Johnson fought hard to
keep the small rural community’s pool open, and
her efforts have been rewarded with the district’s
Citizen of the Year title.
In nominating her the Piopio Community
Swimming Pools Charitable Trust stated Mrs
Johnson took up the challenge to keep the Piopio
community’s pool facilities open when closure
was possible due to rising costs.
Initiating a trust to oversee the pool’s management she set about a management programme
to put the pool on a sound financial path, with
all users contributing on a more equitable pro
rata basis.
She has undertaken training in pool management and her enthusiasm and commitment
inspired tradesmen and swimming supervisors
to contribute their time voluntarily.
Mrs Johnson’s efforts securing the swimming
pool as a valuable asset for the community are
acknowledged in her nomination.
LIFETIME ACHIEVERS
Volunteer duties for lifetime achiever recipient
Graeme Plenderleith can be measured in decades
according to his nominee Te Kuiti High School
principal Bruce Stephens.
Mr Plenderleith (aka Plendy), a teacher at the
school for 28 years retired the first time in 2001,
only to return part-time for a further four years.
His nomination describes him as a generous
man with his time, not just with students, but
also with the community at large where he has
enhanced the lives of so many in the district.
He has served the community with skill sets
through band, music, ballroom dancing, sports
across the spectrum, advice and guidance to
sports and holiday programmes.
PASSIONATE VOLUNTEER
In keeping with Te Kuiti’s ‘legends’ branding,
Sarah Ashby’s passion for voluntary work in the
community has been described as ‘legendary” by
one of two people who nominated her – Alison
Taylor.
CITIZENS AWARDS: Sheryl Johnson’s efforts to keep Piopio’s community swimming pool
open have been recognised with the Waitomo district’s 2016 Citizen of the Year, while retired
teacher Graeme Plenderleith who has given countless hours voluntarily to the community in
sport, music and dance will receive a Lifetime Achievement award. FILE PICS
Described as a person concerned for the wellbeing of others has seen Mrs Ashby involved with
organisations such as Victim Support, Te Kuiti
Foodbank, distributing gifts from the Waitomo
district’s Christmas Children’s Toy Appeal and
running the op shop to raise funds for the Home
of Compassion nuns.
She was also an instigator of the Waitomo
Support Centre which has been instrumental
in assisting other groups such as Women’s Refuge, Victim Support, NKC Family Support and
foodbank.
ORGANISER
Lifetime achiever Edith McIndoe, a woman
who had a passion for the ‘big shows’ also worked
tirelessly in the health sector in the Waitomo
district.

and a friend had organised to travel to Hamilton
to see Dame Malvina Major perform in the Johan

After suggesting she had room in her car for
anyone else wanting to go, before long her car

The demand for locals to see musicals and

She recently retired from this role after her

ORGANISERS have received only a handful of
nominations for this month’s Waitomo District
Citizens Awards.
Awards organiser Waitomo District Council
community development co-ordinator Donna
Macdonald says she is unsure why there is a
shortage of nominations compared to previous
years.
“We have many worthy people in our community and over the past five years there have
been many recognised. But there is still many
more to come.
“Lots of people enquired but when it comes
to biting the bullet and completing the form it
seems to be in the too hard basket although it is
a very simple process.”
Hosted by the council, the awards recognise
the outstanding achievements of individuals, who
through their exceptional community spirit and
dedication have made a significant contribution
within the Waitomo district.

Access issue
meeting draws
great response
SIXTEEN people concerned about access issues for the disabled voiced the problems they
face at a meeting in Te Kuiti on Saturday.
Paraplegic Rodney Bell, whose own problems
were highlighted in a front page story last week
(Waitomo News, May 3), organised the meeting
to gauge how widespread the issue is for local
people living with disabilities.
“The attendees’ disabilities ranged from the
sight impaired to the elderly,” says Mr Bell.
“Mobility scooter riders talked about the
problem of the slope from the footpaths to the
road and vice versa.”
the road.”
Mr Bell is documenting the concerns raised
before meeting with a staff member of the Waitomo District Council in June.
“I want to work alongside the council in order
to come up with a constructive solution which
will work for everyone,” he says.
Spokesperson for CCS Disability Action Geri
Pomeroy also attended the meeting.
“It’s not until you are in a situation like those
who attended Saturday’s meeting do you see all
a disabled person’s difficulties.”
VISBILITY
He says a lack of visibility at the corner of King
St East and Taupiri St was also identified because
plants in the raised wooden planter boxes were
too high for mobility scooter users to see down
the street without standing up.
“The lack of disability parks and also the slope
at the entrance to Te Kuiti Hospital were other
discussion points,” says Mr Bell.
“Able-bodied caregivers also attended the
meeting and were concerned with narrow footpaths when assisting clients who use walking
frames.
“They either have to walk behind them or on

Measles sweeping
the Waikato area
THE 15th new measles case has been confirmed in Hamilton, and North King Country
health officials are advising people who do not
have immunity to be vaccinated immediately.
A further 12 cases are being investigated and
there is concern the outbreak is spreading.
Of those infected one had attended a kapa
haka event also attended by someone in the
infectious stage.
No cases have yet been reported by Oto Med or
Te Kuiti Medical Centre but health officials warn
anyone who has been in contact with measles
should not attend group gatherings unless their
vaccinations are up to date.
The illness normally starts with a fever, cough,
runny nose and sore eyes 10-14 days after exposure.
From day three to seven blotchiness will appear, usually starting on the face before spreading over the body and the rash can last for up to
a week.
Measles is easily spread by breathing, coughing
and sneezing.
People with measles are infectious for five days
before, and five days after the rash appears, and in
10% of cases it can be life threatening.

may need to be isolated from others in the waiting room.
They also advise anyone who suspects they
have measles to stay away from work, school or
public places.
This also applies if you or a family member
aren’t fully immunised and may have been in
contact with someone with measles.
Check with your doctor whether you and your
family have been fully immunised against measles
– especially if you are travelling overseas or were
born after 1968.

Things you need to
know about measles
• Measles is highly contagious – and easily
preventable.
• It affects both children and adults.
• Two doses of the measles vaccine (MMR)
is all that’s needed to protect yourself, your
family and your community.
• Vaccination is particularly important if
you are planning to travel overseas.
People who are regarded as not immune
to measles are those born after January1,
1969 who have not had two doses of the
measles-mumps-rubella (MMR) vaccine
or have not had a laboratory result showing immunity; children over four years old
who have not received their second dose of
MMR vaccine and infants under the age of
15 months who have not received their first
routine dose of MMR vaccine.

Complications from measles include ear infections and permanent hearing loss, diarrhoea,

Complications are more likely in children

Measles during pregnancy increases the risk
of miscarriage, premature labour and low birthweight babies.
Oto Med practice manager Michelle McKenzie

Guilford shines at
2016 Halberg games
OTOROHANGA South School year 8 student
Brayden Guilford blitzed the field in two sprint
races at the national Halberg Junior Disability
Games last month.
And, he did it with very little training.
Athletics is just a sideline interest for the
severely visually impaired 12-year-old whose
real passion is cricket (Waitomo News, April 19).
‘Blind cricket’ is played with a ball that has
bells inside it, with Brayden equally skilled as a
batsman and bowler.
He had practiced with his school mates leading up to the games which were held at St Peter’s
School in Cambridge from April 22-24.
And that practice paid off at the Halbergs
when he took several wickets and scored a good

opposition, crossing the line first in his 50m
and 100m sprints for 12-13 year-old boys able
to walk. He also competed in discus, shot put
and long jump.
“Brayden had such a great time and he especially loved the cricket,” says his mother Paula.
“It was the highlight of his whole weekend.”
He competed at last year’s Halberg Games and
takes a “go with it and enjoy yourself ” attitude
to competing.
The games for physically disabled and visuallyimpaired eight to 21 year olds are funded by the
Halberg Disability Sport Foundation founded by
Sir Murray Halberg in 1963 on the belief that all
Kiwis should have access to sport and recreation

OUR TERMS & CONDITIONS
All advertisements are subject to approval by the company. Advertisements of
a fraudulent or objectionable nature will not be accepted. All advertisements,
even though they may have been accepted by an EMPLOYEE or AGENT
are subject to the approval of the company and the style of the newspaper.
In the event of fire emergency interfering with normal publication, the
publishers have the right to vary the space and/or frequency of the insertion
of advertisements. The company does not hold itself responsible for noninsertion of any advertisement through accident or any other cause, or from
error in the publication of any advertisement. Sub-letting space: Advertisers
are not permitted to sub-let their contract space in any form. Breach of these
conditions may result in a charge at full casual rates. Contract space is
available only for the sale of the advertiser’s own goods or services. Space
bookings cannot be cancelled after deadline. Contract rates for display
advertising are calculated on a 12-month basis. Should an advertiser not
fulfil an order, a surcharge based on total centimetres used at the applicable
rate will be made. Should, during the term of a contract, a rate increase
be affected the new rate will apply immediately. All advertising orders are
subject to variation in material and wage cost. This paper therefore reserves
the right to alter rates at any time. Advertisements written in any non-English
language must be accompanied by an English translation (translation to be
held by the Waitomo News, but not published unless requested).
All editorial and advertising content in this publication is copyright
and approval must be sought from the Managing Editor before its
reproduction in any form.
This paper is printed on elemental chlorine free (ECF)
newsprint produced using predominately renewable
and non-fossil fuel energy sources. Wood used to
make this 42gsm newsprint is mostly waste from the
production of sawn timber, thinings and low value
wood from forestry operations in the central North
Island. The Waitomo News is printed by Beacon Print
Ltd (Whakatane) – an environmentally friendly plant
where all waste is recycled, which operates a largely
chemical-free plate production process.

The final report from this project will be released at the symposium. We warmly welcome all Mäori land block owners,
Iwi members, key stakeholders and the wider community to
come along and engage with presenters and celebrate
this exciting milestone.
A further notice will be released closer to the event showing
the agenda for the day.

All toned up
A PASSION for singing will see two women
from Otorohanga perform on stage in the ‘Entertainment Capital of the World’ – Las Vegas
next year.
For Rika Cowan and Julie Mansell – members
of the 75-strong Hamilton based singing acapella
group The Waikato Rivertones Chorus – it’s a
once in a lifetime opportunity.
After winning the right to represent New
Zealand following the Acapella Capital Sweet
Adelines competition on May 7, the group now
has its sights on the world contest in Las Vegas
in November 2017.
Held at the Michael Fowler Centre in Wellington, the group won the most improved and
mid-sized choir and were then crowned overall
winners.
Mrs Cowan, a seasoned performer with the
group for the past 20 years, has always been passionate about singing since childhood.
She performed with the Te Kuiti-based King
Country Chorus for five years in the 1990s, until
it disbanded and then joined the Rivertones as
a bass singer.
Having had a taste of international competition in Nashville, San Antonio and Denver, she
is confident the group is well voiced to make an
impact.
“Currently we are ranked seventh in the world
but we’re confident we can improve on that, and
that is our overall goal,” she says.
But travelling to an international singing
event will be a first for West Yorkshire-born Julie
Mansell, who along with husband Grant, farms
alpacas on Honikiwi Rd. Mrs Mansell joined the
Rivertones late last year after hearing a lyceum
choir Mrs Cowan was singing in.
She says being a newcomer to singing in a
large group didn’t faze her “as they were all very
friendly.”
“Having someone listen to you sing can be
quite scary but I felt confident at my first audition.”
Having passed that audition, she then took
part in a six-week training course before another
audition along with three others, all singing different harmonies. Mrs Mansell became one of
14 new Rivertones members ranging in age from
16-70 for the group’s 2015 intake.

Wellington earlier this month, Otorohanga members Julie Mansell (left) and Rika Cowan are
now looking towards competing in Las Vegas in November.
was a requirement to dance as well.
Both women say the dancing part of performing doesn’t come naturally for them.
“We are lucky being placed on staged on the
risers so most of what we do is facial expression, so no-one can really see our feet,” says Mrs
Mansell.
Singing in a choir can also present other challenges she says.
“You might be a lead singer like I am, but when

What followed was more coaching, a lot of a different set of notes and you have to be quite
practice and then the need for her to take a step strong to stay on track.
“And because acapella is an American art form
out of her comfort zone when she realised there
you have to learn to sing the vowels in a different
way to the way we pronounce them.”
Both know they have a lot of fundraising to
do to raise the $5000 needed to get them to Las
Vegas.
Group members will all be involved with
assisting each other whether it be singing as a
quartet, catering, or at a local cake sale.
Executive members of the Rivertones are
organising fundraising shows.
In Las Vegas the group will perform for six
minutes in front of a theatre audience of 8000
with the event being televised to an audience of
thousands in the United States.
