Proclaim, Praise and Love
“Discipleship is not an achieved status. It is an ongoing relationship with the Lord and his Church.
The gift of faith, or curiosity about Christ, is planted by God. A disciple is a learner in a process that
changes how one perceives the object of faith…” ~ Bishop Timothy Doherty
As I read these words, I recalled that we’re all saints in the
making. No matter if we’ve been ordained, are married,
or if we’re single, every single day we’re given the opportunity to surrender our will more fully to God’s plan for
our lives. Together we are the Body of Christ, that is the
Church (1 Corinthians 12:27), and together we help one
another to grow in holiness ( Ephesians 4:11-16). While
we acknowledge we are all sinners, we encourage one
another as disciples of Christ.
As our parish mission statement reminds us; “The mission
of the faith family of St. Charles Borromeo Parish is to proclaim the Kingdom of God, to praise the name of Jesus and
follow Him by loving God and our neighbor.” Hopefully
this mission guides us not only in our ministries, but also
in our daily activities, together with our families.
I’ve discovered an easy way to keep our mission statement ever in mind, by focusing on three key words: to
proclaim, praise and love. These three words should
guide us as individuals and as a community.
As you’ll see inside, beyond the bricks and mortar of our church, there are some wonderful opportunities to grow in our faith, while loving God and neighbor, here at St. Charles Borromeo
Catholic Church. Rita and Luke have outlined their summer and fall events, including religious
education, parish missions, and our youth ministry programs. Please note that we are also hoping to rejuvenate our relationship with our sister parish in Haiti and have established tentative
dates for our mission trip (December 28, 2016 through January 3, 2017).
Exciting progress has also been made on our interior renovation project, and it will inspire generations of Christians to praise God in and through the liturgy. While we hope to move back into
the newly renovated church in September, please mark your calendars for Thursday, December
8, 2016 when our church will formally be rededicated by Bishop Timothy Doherty at 7:00 pm.

me in your own as we strive to proclaim, praise and love. ~ Fr. Adam Mauman
FRANK RUNYEON, ACTOR AND BIBLICAL STORYTELLER, COMING TO ST. CHARLES!
This fall (September 18, 19, 20), actor and Biblical storyteller, Frank Runyeon, will be doing a three evening presentation
on the Acts of Mercy. Frank has won national acclaim for his work as a translator and performer of Biblical texts over the
past 20 years. He is perhaps still best known, however, for his many roles on television. He starred for seven years as
Steve Andropoulos on As the World Turns opposite Meg Ryan, a storyline that garnered the second highest ratings in
the history of daytime television. He next appeared for four years as Father Michael Donnelly on the Emmy awardwinning Santa Barbara, and as tycoon Simon Romero on General Hospital, opposite Emma Samms. Frank has also
guest-starred in recurring roles on Falcon Crest as chess genius Jovan Dmytryk, on Melrose Place as Father Tom, on
All My Children as Forrest Williams, and on L.A. LAW as talk-show host Brooks Tapman. He was recently nominated
(2016) for a Daytime Emmy for his guest-starring role as Angel on The Young & the Restless. Frank has also appeared
on the wide screen and has hosted his own comedy talk show on the top-rated L.A. radio station, KFI.
Frank has degrees in both theatre and religious studies. Using both his acting experience and education, he has now
translated and adapted seven Biblical texts for performance as one-man dramas. While at St. Charles he will be doing a
three night series on Mercy:
John: Signs of Mercy on Sunday, September 18, 2016 at 7:00 pm
Luke: Stories of Mercy on Monday, September 19, 2016 at 7:00 pm
James: Works of Mercy on Tuesday, September 20, 2016 at 7:00 pm
Frank is busy writing an autobiographical book: ESCAPE FROM HOLLYWOOD: An Actor's Unlikely Journey to Faith,
due out next year. This promises to be an exciting three day mission! Join us on the 18th, 19th, and 20 th of September
at 7:00 p.m. Hopefully we will be back in the church, but if not, Frank will perform in the gym. Plan to arrive early because seats will be on a first come basis. There is no charge to attend, but a free-will donation will be taken up.
Inquiry/RCIA
If you know of anyone asking questions about the Catholic faith, Inquiry sessions begin the first Tuesday of
every month. For those who have already made the
decision to become Catholic, the Rite of Christian Initiation of Adults (RCIA) will begin on Tuesday, September
27, 2016 at 7:00 p.m. in room 8 at the school.
Anyone who would like more information can contact
Rita Cook at 765-473-5543.
Catholics Come Home
St. Charles Borromeo Church will offer a six-week series
entitled “Catholics Come Home” beginning September 26
at 7:00 p.m. in the gym. The sessions are for non-practicing
Catholics who are seeking answers to questions about returning to the Church. If you know someone who has left
the Church, please invite them to join us.

Prayer, Community, Simplicity, and Service
For those not in the know, Bethlehem Farm is a Catholic
community based in Appalachia that provides low-income
home repair for disadvantaged individuals in the surrounding area. The Farm is centered around the four cornerstones of Prayer, Simplicity, Service, and Community. Volunteers travel to this farm on top of a hill to live in a home
with approximately 40 other people for a week, centering
their days around prayer, and devoting the majority of their
time to service either for the immediate community of the
Farm, or the larger community of the surrounding towns
and homes.
During the month of June of this year, I have been participating in the Farm’s summer servant program. Instead of
participating in the Farm’s mission for one week as a volunteer, I will be spending four weeks helping to lead work
groups, instruct others in prayer, and overall serve the
community in a very direct way. The schedule of a summer
servant is more rigorous than that of a standard volunteer,
as they effectively become an employee of the Farm for
their tenure. This is something that I have been desiring to
do for many years, but have previously been unable to do.
Thankfully, Fr. Adam has been gracious enough to grant
me this “sabbatical” to use as spiritual development that
will flow back into my job leading our teens and young
adults closer to Christ. I am also thankful that our youth
programs have been blessed with wonderful volunteers
that have stepped up to keep the wheels spinning while I
am gone. Know of my prayers and pray for me!

community, you can visit them online at

Want to be Confirmed?
Any student that will be a sophomore or junior in high school this
year has the wonderful opportunity
to receive the Sacrament of Confirmation in 2017.
This year, instead of a callout, I (Luke Hoefer) will be
scheduling individual meetings with each candidate
and their parents to go over individually the requirements and preparation needed for this sacrament.
If you are hoping to complete the Sacraments of Initiation, please contact Luke Hoefer in the parish office at
765-473-5543 or by e-mail [email protected]

OUR LASTING HERITAGE
Since we began “Our Lasting Heritage” we’ve been posting information about the progress we’ve made towards the cost estimate we received to complete our interior renovation project.
Here is a snapshot from the balcony,
taken in February as work began
on our historic church…
Construction Cost Estimate (Fall 2015)
$2,300,000 Cost Estimate
As you can imagine, there are unforeseen costs when renovating a church that is 150 years old. Below are the actual costs for
completing our historic project. Some of these costs were anticipated and extra funds were designated to cover these costs (i.e.
we had “allowances” for plaster and structural repairs). Others
were outside the original plan (i.e. alternates approved by our
Interior Renovation Committee).
Actual Construction Costs (Feb - May 2016)
$2,374,641 Actual Contract Costs
$84,972 Contract Changes
$2,459,613 Construction Costs
To date we have received over 400 pledges towards “Our Lasting Heritage”! Thank you all for your generosity towards our interior renovation project.
Capital Campaign & Fundraising (to date)
$2,085,879 Pledged
Unfortunately, around 190 individuals and/or families still have
not made a pledge towards a community project that will effect
each one of our lives. While we anticipate some additional savings ($126,768 allowances, or “contingency” remain), additional
funds need to be raised to complete our endeavor.
Updated Fundraising Goal (June 2016)
$373,734 Costs – Pledges Needed
100% participation of all parishioners is our goal. Volunteers
from our parish have begun contacting individuals who have not
made a pledge. If the remaining individuals/families each
pledged $175/month for the next year, we would quickly surpass
our goal. We understand that not every family can give that
much, but we ask that those of you who can give that or more,
please do. No gift is too small. Your payments can be made
anytime before April, 2017.
If you have not completed your pledge, please contact the parish
office at 765-473-5543. If you already made a commitment to
“Our Lasting Heritage”, please consider increasing your initial
pledge by 15%. Or, if you previously made a donation in 2015,
please consider making another donation in 2016. Please note
that contributions may be made in memory of deceased loved
ones, or in honor of a family member.
And below is a picture of the progress
that has been made through the first
four months (February-May 2016)
of our interior renovation project...
CHRISTLIFE 2016
Would you want great food, to make new friends, and to grow deeper in love with Christ? Does this sound too
good? It’s not. Here are some quotes from our first ever ChristLife Program at St Charles Borromeo:
How have you been personally or spiritually impacted by this program?
Words cannot describe!
Helped me make a good confession which it had been a long time
Made me a stronger better person
Group discussions were wonderful
Opened my mind and deepened my faith
Wow, where do I begin. I have calm within me and it feels good.
What did you like the most?
Fellowship and sharing ideas
Learning, listening and feeling the spirit. The feeling is truly amazing.
It felt so good to be able to talk with others. It made me feel closer to Christ and the Holy Spirit.
I felt both a personal and spiritual togetherness with the group I was in.
Everyone was giving and sharing.
It’s just what I needed at this time in my life.
The food.
In 2015 the St. Charles Evangelization Committee decided to pursue a program that would help parishioners
have a personal encounter with Christ. After reviewing several programs, “ChristLife” was chosen and implemented in January 2016. The program is broken into three sessions, each seven weeks long. The first is Discovering Christ where participants are invited into a personal relationship with Jesus. Next is Following Christ
which provides the tools participants need to follow Christ as a disciple. Lastly, Sharing Christ which equips
Catholics with the practical skills to proclaim the Gospel and their faith.
The first round of ChristLife began with 25 participants and 13 leaders (who were learning alongside the participants). The result of the program: community of believers strong in the faith, fellowship, and to top it off a
deeper sustained relationship with the Lord. The next session of ChristLife will be offered to parents during
Sunday Formation classes starting in the fall 2016. Another parish-wide session will begin January 2017.
Sign up today. For more information call Wendy Langer (765-327-1372) or the Parish Office (765-473-5543).
We are all called to be holy and this is your chance to live it out in your home parish.
