Festival Choir
The choir did a wonderful job at the
Festival theatre as part of the combined
public school choirs. It was a lively and
entertaining programme that showcased
the effort and dedication of our choir
students and their choir trainer and
Music Teacher, Bronny Cottle. We are so
very proud of them and congratulate
them on a wonderful performance. Tori
Lane also sang a solo part and did a
wonderful job. Photos Page 2.
French Day
French day was just magnificent and the effort everyone
made with costumes was fantastic. We had heaps of help
from parents on the day with various activities including
cooking pancakes and other French delights. Family and
friends also helped staff with preparing the croissant lunch
for everyone. Enjoy the photos in this newsletter.
This day was the culmination of planning by Kate Langdon,
supported so well by all staff. The effort to make this day
special is testimony to just how highly regarded Kate and her
French programme are at Balaklava Primary School.
We are thrilled to announce that Kate Langdon has been
appointed permanently to BPS. In this fulltime teacher
position, Kate will teach French Rec– Year 7 and have another
teaching role too.

Camp Quality Puppets
This week we have been treated to a
performance by the Camp Quality Primary School
Education Program puppets,
that provided
students with a message about support for
students with serious illness.
This was a gold coin donation performance
and we think that maybe several families
may have forgotten. It is not to late to
send it in so maximise the donation we will
be sending through to this valuable group.

GROWTH MINDSET
SAPSASA Athletics
Students took part in the SAPSASA Athletics
District competition at Burra last week.
Congratulations to Brody Boxer who broke the
10 Year old Boys discus record by throwing
23.09m, which broke the recent record by 84cm.
Well done, Brody.
Bus roadway
Bus drivers have asked me to remind all students
and their families that pedestrians must use the
pedestrian gateway exits on Gwy Tce and
Wallace St during before and after school times
and not the bus roadway entrances. Using the
bus roadway to walk into or out of the school is
dangerous.
Welcome to the BAM
(Balaklava’s Ambassadors of
Mindset) column.
We have already introduced you to Growth
Mindset. If you would like some tips to help you
improve your child’s growth mindset, here are
some things you can say to your kids after
school.
-“What did you learn today?”
-“What mistake did you make that taught
you something?”
-“What did you try hard at today?”
Keep an eye out for our column for more
information and useful tips!
Regards
Tricia & Annette
Also we will be having a kids raffle next term’s
newsletter so make sure to be a part of that!

PASTORAL SUPPORT WORKER
Over the past few weeks I have been involved in
SAPSASA sports in a couple of ways. I took the
SAPSASA basketball group (Year 6/7) to
Jamestown and also the SAPSASA athletics team
to Burra. SAPSASA involves competition
between local schools, and normally results in
winning teams or individuals taking the next
step to compete in Adelaide against other State
regions and schools.
Sport is a way, for many young people, to use
the gifts and talents with which they have been
blessed, and for the majority of SAPSASA, it also
involves the development of sportsmanship and
encouragement.
Competitors are
encouraged not
only to do their
best,
but
to
recognise
umpires
and
coaches for their
roles, and also to
acknowledge
positively
the
strength
and
skills of other
competitors. Losing gracefully is not easy when
you are young and have a competitive spirit, but
SAPSASA reminds the students that they will not
always win, and that needs to be treated
positively by all concerned.
Aside from sport, there was last weekend,
another way for our students to show their
talents…..this time in music. On Sunday night
there was a choir performance at the Festival
Theatre in Adelaide involving some 450 students
state-wide. Balaklava Primary School had 28
representatives in this choir, which performed
for 2 hours to a packed audience.
Whilst this sounds impressive, I was also told
that overall there is 12 such concerts, involving
up to 10000 students. Now that I did not know!
Can you imagine the sound that would create if
all those students could perform at the same
time. Parents attended Sunday night, and, from
all reports, a great night of entertainment was
had by all. Music is yet another way for our
students to express their gifts and talents.
None of this comes about easily. All events
(sport or music) need teachers and parental
support to happen efficiently. Time is given,
kilometres are travelled, and sometimes limited
recognition is received. But all this is necessary
for our school to provide these opportunities for
our students to be able to “compete” in their
chosen fields…be it sport, music or whatever
else comes up.
So thanks to all
those
involved.
Thanks to the
parents for their
time given, the
teachers for their
commitment with
practices and days of
competition, and the students for their
willingness and keenness to represent both their
school and themselves.
It is a time of your life that you will never
forget, and the school needs to be recognised
for its commitment to furthering the gifts and
talents of its students in both areas.
Well done everyone!

Bonjour from Mademoiselle
Langdon!
The last few weeks, our classes have
been focussing on describing words:
Drôle – Funny
Petit(e) – Small
Grand(e) – Tall
Gentil(le) – Kind
Mignon(ne) – Cute
Timide - Shy
Intelligent(e) – Smart
Sportif/Sportive – Sporty
The students have had a go at writing full
sentences in French, describing themselves,
friends, family members and pets!
See if you can translate these sentences:
•
Je suis petite et timide.
•
J’ai un frère. Il est sportif.
•
J’ai une sœur. Elle est gentille.
•
J’ai un chien. Il est mignon.

(BER 4) YEAR 4/5 SMARTIES NEWS
On Friday 29th July our class planted 2 Banksia
plants for National Tree day. We planted
“Honeypot” groundcover and a “Blechnifolia”.
During week 8 we got involved in Enviroweek.
We planted seedlings into our edible garden
that we grew from seeds. We have Kale,
Nasturtiums and Sunflowers. We are making 2
murals using recycled plastic bottle tops.
We are now selling Wormy Squirmy on
Thursday and Fridays after school. It is 1 dollar
for 2 litres.
We are giving away some of our “Mitchell’s
Hopping mice” to families at our school. If you

OCCASIONAL BUS TRAVELLERS
If a student, who is not a regular bus traveller or
a student requesting travel on a bus other than
their own, that student MUST:
•
bring signed parental consent to travel on
requested bus, which includes an
emergency contact number, to the Front
Office, preferably the day before the travel.
If there is a seat
available, the student
will
be
given
permission and a tag
number (if required).
There may not always be a seat available.
LOST WINDCHEATERS
PLEASE name your child’s windcheaters as we
are ‘finding’ a large number of un-named
windcheaters being brought to the lost property.
We cannot return un-named windcheaters to
their owners.

SAPSASA ATHLETICS
On the 12th of September 47 students went to
Burra to compete in SAPSASA athletics events.
We were required to meet at school to leave at
8am. There we were met by the many parents
who drove us to Burra. Once we arrived at Burra
we set up our BPS gazebo. As soon as that was
done Mr Woody spoke to us about our events and
schedule.
My first event I was in was 100m. I was versing
many girls such as Zoe Hendry, Holly Brown and
more who I didn’t really talk to.
BRAIN and LEARNING
THEORY IN ROOM 14
Julie Wickham’s class have been learning about
the way in which the brain works. On
Wednesday they dissected sheep’s brains,
locating the significant areas of the brain
involved in emotion, thought and memory.
Thank you to Balaklava Quality Meats for the
donation of the lamb brains (no sheep were
killed specifically for this purpose).
Cassandra getting
right into the activity
and Kaye Ashley
waiting her turn.
I had several events during the day such as shotput, long jump, 200 m and relay. Unfortunately I
didn’t get any placing’s during these events but I
did get 5th in 200m out of eight people.
I enjoyed watching other people doing there
events and seeing their positions. When I was
lining up to do the 100m there was a girl that fell
over.
We all packed up and got ready to go back to
school and that was the day.
Thank you to the teachers and many parents who
helped out on the day.

FRENCH DAY
Friday 9th September
Balaklava Primary School celebrated French
Day by dressing up in ‘French– influenced’
attire, cooking and eating French food (no
snails or frogs’ legs!) and celebrating all
things French.
Costumes were amazing—a Can-Can dancer,
Pierrot dolls, mime artists, a gendarme, a
flag, artists, Madeline, one or two
Musketeers, Marie Antoinette, lots of berets
and striped t-shirts, moustaches, chefs,
elegant French ladies in haute couture and a
sea of red, white and blue.
Students participated in French – based
activities and then enjoyed our French
inspired and delicious ham and cheese
croissants, prepared by parents.
The day was completed by a French Day
assembly where both the Australian and the
French, National Anthems were featured.
