Oh, really? That big?
It’s a common question we hear. We’re
big enough to be urban, in a landscape
big enough to let us be country. More
than 64,000 of us call Wagga Wagga
home – yep, that’s why you always run
into one of us.
Wagga Wagga is the place where paths
cross and people meet. It was that
way with the Wiradjuri people as they
travelled the region following the cycle
of ceremonies and seasons. With major
transport routes, easy access to large
metropolitan areas, plenty of industry and
a large education sector it remains that
way today.
Perhaps Wagga’s most famous attribute
is its name, like having the Bono, Cher
and Madonna version of a place name.

It’s fun to say, because you say it twice
– harking back to the Wiradjuri language
custom, until you’re on friendly terms,
and then you can just say ‘Wagga’.
Visit us in high summer, and you’ll
be looking for a refreshing dip in the
Murrumbidgee River or to escape the
heat with some retail therapy.
In autumn you’ll think it’s paradise –
clear, cool mornings and crisp days will
follow you through piles of coloured,
crunchy leaves and turn every vista into a
photograph.
In winter, you can bring out your best
winter woolies and witness some
amazing frosts that turn everything white
and spiderwebs into tiny, tiny works of
art.
Spring is a celebration of life, food and
love – punctuated by outdoor events
and spectacular yellow, purple and green
landscapes.

HERE
Wagga Wagga is made for road trips. Or
plane trips. Or…you get the picture.
In Wagga Wagga, we play rugby
league and Australian rules. Why is
that significant when we’re discussing
geography? Because it means we’re
about the same distance from
Melbourne and Sydney. So not only are
kids in Wagga busy on winter weekends,
you can see both codes on telly – win!
By road
Whether you are driving on the Hume
Freeway in a northerly direction from
Melbourne or south from Sydney, you’ll
be in Wagga Wagga in around five hours.
Canberra’s a mere two-and-a-half hours
up the road.
By air

Place, a place to reflect, it contains a
totem hand carved by Wiradjuri elders to
represent the long journey of Australia’s
Indigenous people.

Keeping kids active won’t ever be a
problem when visiting Wagga Wagga.
The Oasis Regional Aquatic Centre has
you covered for a fast lap, slow float and
some pool time fun all year round.
To get outside and amongst it, the
Botanic Gardens is home to a zoo and
free flight aviary, as well as the Willans Hill
Miniature Railway. After getting up close
to some native wildlife, you can ride the
miniature railway as it weaves through
a garden setting, through woodlands, a
tunnel and over a bridge on the first and
third Sunday of every month.
Give yourself permission
to wander around one of
the many markets, walk
the tree-lined streets,
or pack some great
local produce and sit by
the Murrumbidgee and
watch it idly flow by –
it’s all part of giving in
to the Wagga Wonder.
The large, free barbecue area and
playground areas for both big and little
kids means it is a great way to spend a
day.

Each year Baylis Street is taken over by a
parade of mortarboards, floating down
the street on the heads of current and
past graduates of the university in the
Town & Gown Parade.
Wagga Wagga is a university town, you
can see it in the wave of new faces
each February, the energy around art,
culture, innovation and the traditional
Wednesday night uni night at local pubs.
For Saba Nabi, her move to Wagga
Wagga from Delhi, India with her
husband Syed Haris Omar and young
daughter Ariba Omar was an academic
decision, literally and figuratively.
Her husband received a full scholarship
to Charles Sturt University to study for
his PhD in Bio-medical Sciences. After
considering offers from universities in
Sydney and America, it was Wagga’s
space and friendliness that won them
over.
“It was so different to Delhi on so many
levels, and we loved that,” said Saba,
who is also completing her PhD in
Bio-medical Sciences at Charles Sturt
University.
“When I first arrived in Wagga with my
two-year-old daughter, I threw myself
into the community – I’d go out every
day, meet and talk to people – they were
so friendly!
“I signed up to every newsletter I could
from Council, the library, art gallery
and actively created local groups and
connections on social media – I wanted
to be part of the community, absorb it
all and meet people from here to really
have an authentic Wagga experience.
“I have so many local friends, I found
so many beautiful people who were
so approachable and willing to help –
even civic leaders, if I have an idea or
a question, I just contact the Federal
Member or the Councillors direct, it’s just
how it’s done in Wagga.”
Saba says her friends in Delhi and others
in Sydney and Melbourne sometimes
wonder if she is busy enough in her new,
smaller hometown.
“I laugh – we have the same shops, but
they’re easier to get to, we have great
free events like FUSION and Little Big
Day Out, and in school holidays there
are so many activities for my daughter – I
don’t have enough time to take her to all
the things!
“The library and theatre have provided
so many avenues for entertainment and
making local connections for us as a
family. My daughter was so in love with
The Wiggles, and when we could see
them here in Wagga, I really did think –
this is a wonderful place for us.”

SHOCK OF THE NEW
JOY OF THE OLD
Regional centres like Wagga love the
new. Surprised? We’re not.
You will see it in our buildings, like the
striking Civic Centre building in the
centre of town, beside the Wollundry
Lagoon. Bookended by the first ever
Council Chambers built in 1881 (now a
site of the Museum of the Riverina) and
the glorious 1963 Civic Theatre, it shows
Wagga never shies away from celebrating
the new.
All glass and strong lines and not at all
the shy, retiring type, it’s no surprise
that the Civic Centre is the result of an
international architecture competition.
Opened in 1999 as the administrative
home for the internal mechanisms of
the Council, it also houses the Wagga
Wagga Art Gallery and National Art Glass
Collection, and the Wagga City Library.
This convenient cluster of cultural
collections means you can wander
through the building, view the latest art
exhibitions in the gallery, discover more
about Wagga’s history in the museum
or sit with a cuppa and catch up on the
latest newspapers, magazines or books
in the sun-filled library.
Whether you’ve got a couple of hours or
a few days, explore with ease and at your
own pace.

and overseas in the art gallery.

Since 1975 the Wagga Wagga Art Gallery
has been quietly accumulating more
than 1400 original prints by some of
Australia’s foremost artists for its Margaret
Carnegie Print Collection, and building
a world class, nationally significant
collection of contemporary art glass
housed in a standalone gallery.
A golden Chiko Roll, an international
fraudster and a bullet from a bushranger
- these are some of the local stories
you will discover in one of the two sites
of the Museum of the Riverina. You
may also encounter thought-provoking
exhibitions on faith, war, immigration, or
love that give you pause for thought.
There’s always something on at the
Civic Theatre. High profile acts, travelling
shows, comedy festivals, children’s
plays or community productions – the
theatre will show you a good time. While
waiting for an evening show, relax on
the balcony overlooking the lagoon and
watch the sun go down with a cold drink
in hand.
You don’t have to go inside to get a
view of Wagga’s artistic side, though.
Wandering through the CBD and along
the Wiradjuri Walking Track, you’ll see
evidence of Wagga’s longstanding
commitment to supporting the
development of public art pieces that
welcome, connect and create a sense of

PETER COX
Producer, Director, Writer + Teacher
“Everything I have ever wanted to do in theatre
and film I can do in Wagga Wagga”.
Acclaimed producer, director, writer and
teacher Peter Cox knew all about Wagga
Wagga’s thriving theatre scene well
before he moved here in 1986, and long
before he co-wrote and co-produced
the feature film Backyard Ashes here.
Originally from Newcastle, the drama
teacher took his first teaching post at
Finley, just under three hours south-west
of Wagga Wagga, and used to regularly
travel to Wagga to attend shows at the
Civic Theatre, bring his own shows to
perform, and visit friends.
His wife, Wendy had attended teachers
college in Wagga, so the connections
started to pile up, until it was the logical
next move.
“Everything I have ever wanted to do
in theatre and film I can do in Wagga
Wagga,” Peter said.
“I have the space to write, the ability to
test out new shows and then, because
we are so central, send them to regional
and metropolitan stages.

Filming Backyard Ashes, where the game
of backyard cricket is celebrated as
much as the Aussie/Pom rivalry, was only
ever going to happen in Wagga Wagga,
and it became integral to the story.
“Wagga may be known for sporting
greats, but the community love and
support art and culture just as much,
which was evident when making the
film,” Peter said. “I think all of Wagga
Wagga ended up in the credit listing
thanks to all the support!”
The circle of Wagga Wagga connections
is large and sometimes feels all
encompassing, says Peter.
“People I know and meet up with in
another city, or even another country,
will say, ‘Oh, so and so said to say hi!’,
and I think, how is there possibly a
connection there? And the connection
will be Wagga.
“Maybe it is hard to escape it, so it’s lucky
I don’t want to.”

Wagga Wagga’s landscape is an
astounding collection of colour, shape
and form. When talking about Wagga
life, some words are often repeated.
Space. Light. Colour. When you’re part of
it, these elements seep into your world

Much of Wagga’s draw for locals and
visitors alike comes not from the built
infrastructure, but the natural forms.
If watersports and fishing are more
your thing, Lake Albert on the southern
edge of the city is for you. Surrounded
by a walking track and serviced by two
playgrounds and barbecue shelters,
with a golf club and the Boat Club as
neighbours, it is a great family-friendly
area.
From farmland vistas to rugged bushland,
getting out and amongst it is a rewarding
exercise – physically and mentally.
Wagga Wagga has often been tagged
the Garden City of the South, due to a
fastidious commitment to its parklands.
An ideal guide for exploring the
landscape around Wagga Wagga is the
Wiradjuri Walking Track. A 42km loop of
the city, you can attack it whole, in bits,
or just tackle the 12km Wollundry Loop
through the city.
The track provides viewing points
from Pomingalarna Reserve, covers
floodplains and farming land, follows
the Murrumbidgee River, taking in the
Marrambidya Wetland.
The Murrumbidgee River winds through
Wagga Wagga, choosing to remind the
city of its power once every so often
during periods of flood. Wagga Beach
has been a bathing beach for many,
many years – it even had its own Surf
Lifesaving Club in its heyday.
Close to the centre of town and part of
the new Riverside precinct, the beach is
where you can take a refreshing dip as
well as have a barbecue, attend an event

or market, or simply lie on the grass by
the bend in the river and stare at the sky.

DAN BERESFORD
Hardcore Riding Nut + Instagrammer
“I can ride solidly for four hours in the morning,
direct from the City through to the most breathtaking
scenery in the surrounding countryside”.
Nope. Never. No way. Why would you?
That was Dan Beresford’s thoughts about
moving from Sydney to Wagga Wagga.
But then he did. Five years on, he can’t
imagine what took him so long.
Dan grew up in Engadine, spent time on
the cycling road racing circuit in Europe,
and moved to Albion Park after getting
married.
Wagga Wagga just kept on popping up
though, when remarkably, all three of his
wife’s sisters married and moved to the
Wagga region.
After commuting two-and-a-half hours
to work most days, and seeing his
cycling training come to a halt as result,
Dan knew something had to change.
“I was sitting stuck in traffic on the
Tom Ugly Bridge in southern Sydney,
calculating that my drive to work that
day was going to take three hours, when
I looked across the road and saw a café,”
said Dan. “People were there, having a
coffee, reading the paper and I thought –
there’s got to be a better way.
“So I pulled off the road, went to the
café, and quit my job then and there.”
Dan’s wife and three kids made the move
to Wagga, where Dan now traverses the
local countryside on his mountain bike
six days a week before going to work.
They have a new home overlooking the
city, and the kids are eagerly anticipating
the new backyard pool. All things they
once thought impossible.
“The countryside around Wagga is
brilliant,” said Dan.
And he should know. Most days see
him getting up at 4am and covering
hundreds of kilometres on his bike, it’s
no surprise that Dan’s Instagram account
is littered with phenomenal sunrise and
landscape shots or that he’s in better
shape at 40 than he was at 21.
“I can train better, faster and safer here in
Wagga than I ever could in Sydney. I took
up cycling again when I came to Wagga
just to meet people, but the sense of
community in the sport and space for
training has allowed me to get back into
racing and chase new goals.
“I can ride solidly for four hours in the
morning, direct from the city through
to the most breathtaking scenery in the
surrounding countryside where I won’t
see another car, which was a welcome
relief after many close shaves in Sydney,”
said Dan.
“When I’m training off-road now, the
closest I might get to a collision on my
bike is with a kangaroo at Pomingarlarna
Reserve – they’re the biggest hazard
now, not cars, and I can cope with that.”

Lake Albert is one of Wagga’s most
popular recreational facilities. It caters
for boating, fishing, swimming and its
5.5km track is commonly used by walkers,

Eight fitness stations have been installed
in four locations on the eastern side of
Lake Albert. Set over 800m, the fitness
stations are very popular with users of the
lake.

LIVINGSTONE NATIONAL PARK
Great for camping, mountain bike riding,
horse riding, picnicking, 4WD touring and
birdwatching.
The park includes a multi-use track
perfect for enjoying some of the loveliest
parts of Livingstone National Park which
is full of tall cypress pines, scribbly gums
and spectacular flowers.

POMINGALARNA RESERVE
Pomingalarna Reserve forms part of the
Wiradjuri Walking Track and is popular
with bushwalkers, runners, bike riders and

abounds with plenty of kangaroos,
wallabies, lizards and bird life to enjoy.
A fun, flowing 13km mountain bike course
is clearly marked.

centre. The wetland features a Healing

Wollundry Grove Olives
“The property absolutely ticked all our boxes,
and we fell in love with the location,
the view and the possibilities,”
Joo-Yee Lieu had a pretty strong list
for the farming property she wanted in
Wagga Wagga in 2010.
Lovely house, four bedrooms, great view,
on the school bus run and close to town.
She got all that, what she didn’t realise
was that it wouldn’t be farming grain like
her and husband Bruce Spinks were used
to – but olives.
Wollundry Grove Olives is less than 15
kilometres north of Wagga Wagga, and
is home to more than 2000 olive trees
that produce around 5000-6000 litres of
extra virgin olive oil and a range of olive
products each year.
“The property absolutely ticked all our
boxes, and we fell in love with the
location, the view and the possibilities,”
Joo Yee said. “We probably fell so much
in love that we didn’t really investigate
the work side of it too closely, I just said
– ‘we can do it!’.”
“Hard work!” Joo Yee said. “Bruce and
I threw ourselves into it, turning our
farming knowledge in a new direction,
and whenever it got a bit hard Bruce
would remind me that I said we could
do it.”
Wollundry Grove is also a key tourist
attraction in the region, offering farm
tours and the opportunity to learn more
about growing olives and producing oil.
“I get a great deal of joy educating and
meeting people from all over the world
about our operation,” Joo Yee said. “We
respect the surrounding landscape and
seasons of Wagga to bring out the best
of the fruit’s natural flavours.
“We have come a long way from that
first year when we took over just before
harvest and struggled with the unknown,
but winning awards and continuing to
produce nationally recognised oil that is
used in restaurants across Australia gives
us a real sense of satisfaction.”

Thirsty Crow Brewing Company in 2010
alongside his family and supported by
friends.
The Wagga brewpub well and truly made
a grand entrance into the craft brew
scene when a month after opening the
Vanilla Milk Stout took out the Champion
Hybrid Trophy at the Australian
International Beer Awards.
The awards just keep rolling in and the
family-owned establishment continues
to welcome locals, visitors and a growing
number of craft beer enthusiasts through
their doors every day.
When asked why he chose to start his
business in Wagga after brewing on the
Sunshine Coast and Hunter Valley, the
answer was pretty straightforward.
“I like Wagga, I like the feel of the
place,” Craig said. “It gave me the best
opportunity to open a brewpub that
made great beers and served local food
that challenged people’s expectations of
a pub meal.”
But not only that, Craig says Wagga’s
location also gives him a leg up when
selling his beers into the metropolitan
market.
“Our reputation extends beyond Wagga
and our beers are really well known in
Sydney and Melbourne. The way I look at
it, over 10 million people are a short drive
away and they get it delivered direct
from the brewer!”
Even after travelling, working and
studying elsewhere, Craig says he can’t
beat the fact that his closest friends
continue to be those he made growing
up in Wagga.
“I met my best mate at pre-school, and
he now works with me here at the Crow.
“To me, Wagga is a place where you
can make connections that really count,
whether it’s lifelong friendships or a chat
about good beer and food across the
bar, that part of the Wagga personality
has soaked into our business.”
It is fitting that the expanded brewpub
backs onto the Murrumbidgee River,
a feature of Wagga’s landscape that
features heavily in Craig’s life.
“There’s nothing better than taking
my dogs to beat the summer heat at
Wiradjuri Reserve or watching the world
go by from a tinnie catching cod and
yellowbelly, all just minutes away from
the CBD.”

From the early 1900s the Up-to-Date
Store provided anything from pianos
to fresh seafood for the people of

experience from well before the advent
of malls and online shopping in the
heritage listed building, still resplendent
with original fittings and one-of-a-kind
historical artifacts like the Lamson Cash
Railway system, the PayWave of its time.
The Coolamon Fire Museum and
Visitor Information Centre is home to
thousands of firefighting items from all
over Australia and the world. Track the
changes in firefighting through more
than 100 fire helmets and uniforms, as
well as breathing apparatus from the

COOTAMUNDRA
Cootamundra, about an hour away from
Wagga Wagga, is surrounded by classic
undulating agricultural land and villages
rich in heritage. If you are after a trip to
find good old fashioned country values,
a community with a sense of warmth
and belonging, head to Coota, as it is
affectionately known, to soak it all up.
Given “the greatest batsman the
world has ever known” was born in
Cootamundra, it is no surprise that there
is a special interest in cricket in the town.
Visit the birthplace of Don Bradman and

The spectacular Milestone Sculptures

of green and gold can be seen as they
simulate the growth cycle and the subtle
movement of a dense crop of wheat.
In July and August, Cootamundra turns a
vivid yellow, as countless Cootamundra
Wattle trees bloom.
The Wiradjuri Windows in Cootamundra
Town Hall tell the dreamtime story of
Mirriyuula, recreated in seven stained
glass windows. The stained glass
windows are a Wiradjuri tribute to
Melinda Bell for keeping the old stories
alive and to those children of the stolen
generations who endured their years
at the Cootamundra Aboriginal Girls
Training Home.

GUNDAGAI
You’ve heard the song, right? On the
road to Gundagaaaaaiiii… so get to it!
Only an hour from Wagga Wagga,
Gundagai is so iconic it not only has a
song but a poem written about it. Get
your picture taken next to the iconic Dog
on the Tuckerbox memorial, that has sat
beside the Hume Highway as a tribute
to Australia’s pioneers since 1932. The
statue was inspired by a bullock drover’s
poem, Bullocky Bill, which celebrates the
life of a drover’s dog that loyally guarded
the man’s tuckerbox until death.
Frank Rusconi was a master crafstman
who in addition to creating the marble
base for the Dog on the Tuckerbox
statue, crafted The Marble Masterpiece
over 28 years. The work, constructed
entirely of NSW marble was finished in
1938 and consists of 20,948 hand cut
and polished pieces. It must be seen to
be believed.

JUNEE
Only 30 minutes north of Wagga, Junee
offers visitors the eclectic combination of
chocolate, ghosts and trains.
Founded in the glory days of the NSW
Government Railways and now home to
some of the state’s most fitting tributes to
those grand old locos, Junee combines
old world charm with its modern lifestyle
and culture.
You can make a giant chocolate

The legendary Monte Cristo Homestead,

Great Southern Railway opening in 1874,

Junee is home to the largest working
railway roundhouse in the Southern
Hemisphere. Opened in 1947, it is still in

time and features steam and diesel
locomotives, a 1940s accident crane,
quadracycles, trikes and a mail car.

Lockhart is set between the mountains
and the outback, the wineries and the

of the century architecture. Walk wide

is surrounded by impressive natural
attractions with well maintained walking

The unique Doris Golder Gallery within
Green’s Gunyah Museum contains over
30 portraits created by renowned local
artist Doris Golder whose rural paintbox
is one of Lockhart Shire’s most historical
and important resources - wool. Washed,
combed and undyed, Doris has been
using naturally coloured wool to create
an amazing array of landscapes and
portraits since the early 1980s.

Museums, excellent sporting and

hour from Wagga to explore beautifully

Aviation Museum has arguably the

Australian treasures at the Temora Rural
Museum. Regularly changing exhibitions

Get your flapper on and step back in time
by taking a journey 25 minutes west of
Temora to discover Ariah Park, a village
that has changed little since the roaring
1920s. Famed for bowsers, wowsers
and peppercorn trees, this charming
community hosts a range of regular
country events and is home to the first
bulk grain haulage with a bronze statue
commemorating it.
Lake Centenary is a popular venue
for water skiing, swimming, sailing,
paddleboats and fishing. The grassy

Wiradjuri man and Wagga Wagga local,
Joe Williams says it doesn’t matter where
in the world his sporting career and role
as mental health advocate takes him,
Wagga Wagga keeps calling him home.
“It’s a hard thing to describe – it’s
more than feeling homesick, it is a pull
from your country calling you home,
calling you back to reconnect, to be
comfortable and be with family,” said
Joe.
And when he is home, Joe likes nothing
better than stretching out on the sand of
the beach at Wiradjuri Reserve alongside
the Murrumbidgee River.
“I can lay in the sand for hours, taking in
the sounds around me, connecting with
the land and my own thoughts,” he said.
Joe is one of the many well-known and
successful sporting personalities that
hail from Wagga Wagga, having played
NRL for South Sydney Rabbitohs, Penrith
Panthers and Canterbury Bulldogs before
switching to become a world boxing
champion.
Wagga’s reputation as a sporting
incubator preceded him wherever he
went, and he often heard people wonder
what must be in the water in the city to
have produced so many sporting greats.
Joe thinks it is a combination of
opportunity, natural environment and
supportive community.
“I call Wagga home, I say I’m from
Wagga, but I actually moved here when
I was 10,” said Joe. “My family moved
here for the opportunity that Wagga
provided for the kids – sport, schools,
university – we moved here to have
those opportunities available to us.
“The parks, river and sporting fields
connected us with the natural
environment and kept us active – it was
nothing to have 10 to 15 kids playing
footy in the local park, just because.
“It didn’t matter what your background
was, you were accepted,” said Joe.
Joe was named the Wagga Wagga
Citizen of the Year in 2016 for his
work to prevent suicide and inspire
youth through motivational speaking
workshops through his work as founder
of The Enemy Within suicide prevention
charity.
“Wagga is full of beautiful people, who
